Strength in Restraint There’s something about strength that holds great allure. From the garden to the present, strength has been continually sought and desired by humanity. Whether it is in fitness or in intellect, strength is ever pursued and draws people towards the few who have it in spades. But is strength always as it is perceived to be? We perceive that those who work out are physically strong. And those who have great mental intelligence are mentally strong. But what about those who can vindicate themselves, justify themselves, defend themselves, avenge themselves, magnify themselves, and yet…do not? Do they display strength, or just weakness – maybe cowardice? How does the world respond to strength that is restrained? “What’s wrong with you?!” “Why did you let him walk all over you?!” “Speak up for yourself!” “Defend yourself!” “Until you stand up for yourself, you will not be respected!” Is strength that is restrained nothing more than weakness or foolishness? Or is there strength in restraint? God by definition is all-powerfue and is the source of all strength. In the past, because of the rampant evil and corruption of mankind, God desired to eliminate the human race (Gen. 6:7). God certainly had more than enough strength to carry out this plan. And yet…he didn’t. Why? Compassion and hope. God restrained complete judgment because He had compassion on humanity’s future (2 Pet. 3:9; Ps. 78:38). God also had hope for humanity because of Noah (Gen. 6:8-9). Is showing mercy to the living weakness? To save lives, is that foolishness? Though far from objective in this matter, most of mankind would concur that restrained judgment is not weakness – it is love. So often, when people are wronged whether by word or deed, they desire to respond in kind as a display of their strength. But truly, what requires more strength? Responding in kind or restraint? It is easy to respond in anger and ill-will – to do as has been done to you. To restrain one’s self from selfish impulse for the sake of withholding evil takes far greater strength. How easy it is to be selfish and push others aside, or to respond to wrong by doing wrong! But we know that showing restraint instead takes far greater strength. We know by our own experience that restraint is harder. Jesus served as the ultimate example of showing strength in restraint. He taught us that turning the other cheek and holding ourselves back from evil is the highest display of strength that we can achieve (Mat. 5:39; Rom. 12:17). Jesus proved this to all humanity when he willingly sacrificed his life on the cross (1 Pet. 2:23-24). In this, He showed the strength of restraint for the sake of love. 1 Cor. 13:5 tells us that love is not easily provoked. When provoked, it is all too easy for us to be unloving. But to love takes great strength. To love takes restraint. So let us consider that the next time we are tempted to display our strength through selfishness, payback, or by responding to unkind words with the like, let us instead show the world and our fellow Christians that true love is found in meekness, and real strength is found in restraint. ~Jeffrey Howell
