The Interconnectedness Of Cultural Anthropology And Folk...
The chief concern of this paper is to explore the interconnectedness of cultural anthropology and folk literature. There are many essays that have already
shown the interrelationship between folklore and anthropology1. Both these umbrella terms have many things in common but when it comes to folk
literature and cultural anthropology, some distinctions become apparent. To say, hence, this paper is different in a sense that instead of dealing with the
broad areas of folklore and anthropology, it looks at their branches and explores interconnectedness between them. Before moving further, one needs to
understand the area of folklore and folk literature. American Folklore Society (AFS) defines folklore as "the traditional art, literature, knowledge, and
practice that is disseminated largely through oral communication and behavioral example". It clearly hints that folklore is a broad term which includes
all the types of expressions whether oral, written, visual, or performative. This leads to an inference that folk literature is one of the branches of
folklore which deals with verbal and written expressions. Similarly, anthropology is a jacket term which means a study of humanity including the
prehistoric to contemporary, whereas the cultural anthropology is one of its four branches which aims to understand and define why a certain group
behaves differently from the other group. These clarifications lead to another inference that though both anthropology and folklore study human

Middle Eastern Legends Myths
Middle Eastern Legends are stories that have been made up, they are about people and their actions or deeds. These people have lived in more
recent times and have been mentioned in history. Some other characteristics of legends include exaggerated characters and events, focuses on
individuals and their accomplishments, and were once believed to be true. Myths answer questions about how the natural world works and how we
should treat each other. These stories are usually set a long time ago, before history as we know was written. They also often use magic or break
natural law and provide the symbols by which cultures are organized. Fairy tales have been around for a long time starting with oral tradition and have
elements that were once believed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

events happened people would always see little creature roaming around and these creatures would only come out after these big events. People
around the area began to blame the Peri for everything that took place due to them only being seen after the disasters. Another fairy tale was the

Pepe The Frog: The Reaction Image
Pepe the Frog, The Reaction Image One of the easiest ways to describe digital folklore is to look at different examples of it. Personally, my favorite
example of digital folklore is memes. Memes are one of the most common and enjoyable forms of digital folklore. Memes are great because they
have the ability to express feeling and emotion, spread information on current events, and to make people laugh. From a digital folklorist aspect
memes are an ideal piece of folklore as they are spread globally, instantly and have many purposes and unwritten rules. One of my favorite memes,
which works best as a reaction, is "Pepe the Frog". Pepe is one of the most comical way to express your feeling towards something as he has so many
different emotions and variations. "Pepe the Frog" is not only a good folklore piece but also has an origin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the comic, "Pepe the Frog" is captioned with, "feels good man" (Figure 1) which is later used to create the first Pepe meme. In this meme, he
has a happy smile and was used as a great reaction to things that feel good. Later on, Pepe was then altered to have a frown captioned with "feels
bad man" which started the alteration and development into all the different facial expressions of Pepe today. "Pepe the Frog" has been used by many
to show a facial expression even better than words with so many different varieties. Currently "Pepe the Frog" is considered a hate symbol by the
Anti–Defamation league (ADL). Reasons why "Pepe the Frog" is considered a hate symbol by the ADL is because of its use from "alt right" groups in
anti–Semitic settings. Due to having so many different versions, there has even begun a trend of finding "Rare Pepes" which are "Pepe the Frog"
memes that are so unique that they are not found on the internet. With the wide spread popularity of "Pepe the Frog", there is bound to be specific rules

Sedna and The Great Father are both on a journey into the sea. The Great Father cares for animals and Sedna's fingers become them. These myths
reflect the Canadian culture by expressing the need to protect your children.
However, in the end, the protectors affect them in a negative way.
The value of family is evident in each. In "Sedna, Goddess of the Seas," Sedna's father comes to save her from a man he does not approve of.
However, he ends up killing her. In "Talk No More," The Great Father is protecting his animals because it is his duty. In the end, he takes away their
ability to talk.
To this day, Canadian Inuit Hunters believe in Sedna and pray for her to release the animals that were born to her in hopes that they may eat. They
believe that if men are swept away at sea, they are taken down to comb Sedna's hair and if they do it well, she releases a whale, walrus, or seal.
There is no other religious information on the story "Talk No More." It is only stated that it is retold by Dez

African Oral Literature: The Contributions Of African Oral...
The desire of writers of African oral literature to preserve, assert and showcase their rich cultural heritage to the outside world informed the transfer of
oral traditions into the written form. From the colonial era till date, African writers in all genres have taken this as a great challenge to promote this
literary tradition. In view of this, writers such as Amos Tutuola, Chinua Achebe, John Pepper Clark–Bekederemo, Wole Soyinka, NgugiWaThiog'o,
Ferdinand Oyono, MugoBeti, and a host of others, skillfully infused one form of oral tradition or the other into their literary works.Like the foremost

According to Chukwuma (2002), oral literature is of great significance in the African context, mainly because it is the traditional form of literary
expression bearing in mind the oracular nature of African societies. As discussed earlier, modern African writers incorporate oral products into their
writings to garnish them and show their cultural identity to outside the world. While the fusion of oral resources into modern literature is
commendable, the utilitarian functions of these materials are not ignored. This is because oral tradition, orature or folklore help to teach young members
of the community adherence to social norms, validates social institutions and religious rituals, which all safeguard the sustainability of the best of
African traditions and culture (Sone and Toko, 2007). In the same vein, Okafor (2004) commented on the importance of folklore by positing that
parents tell their children stories and family history, talk about right and wrong, their children vocabulary, explain how to show respect, and countless
other values, attitudes and skills. The lifestyle and beliefs system of any ethnic grouping depicts the culture of the people and to promote their cultural
identity, their oral tradition should be transfer from their oral form into print and writing. It is at this background that we shall examine the oral materials
that characteriseHabila'sMeasuring

Every episode of the show may elucidate different myths and tales from different provinces to have variations in order for children to learn other
cultural treasures. Every episode of the children's television show will be given to a specific province or region and their local myths or and tales. Also,
airing the episodes on the most appropriate time can be a great help. The most appropriate time may be when children are all awake, done with their
homework and at their full interest in learning. This appropriate time would give the children's television show the satisfaction that children are
watching intently and attentively with their parents. Likewise, variation on the episodes will interest the children to watch out for more local myths

Being Greedy Trickster
Question 4
In folklore, tricksters are a main character. They deceive other in order to make advances on their own plans and they also cause trouble for other.
Thought we do not want to encounter tricksters, tales about tricksters appeal to us and keep the character alive. The reason why the trickster is still
alive is because he will never win and can be easily outsmarted.
In "Being Greedy Chokes Anansi", Anansi tries to kill other by trying to make them say the word five. This word was banned in the kingdom and
anybody who said it would instantly die. When Anansi asks someone what number comes after 4 they say "...One I'm sitting on". Anansi tells them
they are wrong and eventually says 5, causing his death. In this story, the trickster appeals to us because he is outsmarted and doesn't win. This
makes the reader feel happy because good will always triumph over evil (the trickster). This is also the reason why the trickster is still alive in our
own lore. Another reason why the trickster is still alive in our lore is because every story has a different way in which the trickster tries to deceive
others, making every story unique to its culture.

Eastern Variations Of Cinderella
Folk tale is a valuable fortune of human beings, giving readers a closer exposure to cultures all over the world. One of the most popular folk tale is
Cinderella – a story about a good girl facing persecution of her cruel stepmother and sister. Almost all Cinderella versions in the world share the same
themes and motifs but the function of plots and motifs might perform differently in distinctive local cultural contexts. Two Eastern variations of
Cinderella – Tam Cam and Neang Angkat in Vietnam and Cambodia respectively are typical examples. The two stories are similar in terms of theme,
motif of magical help and presence of Buddhist beliefs. However, regarding the specific reincarnation, supernatural power and endings, they do not

First of all, though both having been influenced by Buddhism, the reincarnations of main characters in the two stories are somehow different because
they are also affected by other ideologies and cultures. In Vietnamese Tam Cam, Tam undergo four times of reincarnation (a nightingale, a white cedar
tree, a wooden loom and a persimmon fruit) whereas in Neang Angkat, the girl reborns two times. The reincarnation process of Tam is linked with
Confucian ideology of female virtues and behaviour. For instance, her transformation from a persimmon fruit into a human shape to do the housework
and cook for the old woman represents the virtue of skillful of work, which is one of four Confucian virtues that Vietnamese women need to obtain
(Bui, 2009). Differently, two forms of reincarnation in Cambodian Cinderella – a banana tree and a grove of bamboo only describe two symbolic
images of this eastern country. Another difference is the supernatural power. Whereas the "Bб»
Ґt" in Tam Cam stands for the Buddha, the Spirit of
Virtue in Cambodia's Neang Angkat is said to be stand–in for her dead mother (Bettelheim, 1974). The Bụt is a religious image, appearing in many
other folk lores in Vietnam and willing to help whoever encounter difficulties while the Spirit of Virtue in Neang Angkat is just a symbol of
motherhood. It is the strong and eternal love of the dead mother that helps Angkat

Is Shanghai A City For Shopping?
I was born and I was raised in Shanghai, China, so I should have known Shanghai very well. But when some of my friends came to Shanghai and
asked me that where they should visit in Shanghai besides those famous places, and I can hardly answer these questions. In most people's mind,
Shanghai is a city for shopping, not for sightseeing, because the history of Shanghai is not very long, and most of the tourist attractions in Shanghai are
quite new.
Lately there are a few supernatural stories about some architectures in Shanghai. Although we can not define the truth of them, they have already made
those buildings covered by a mysterious veil. These stories included the appearances, histories, origins, which were not mentioned before. Now more
citizens and tourists pay attention to these places. These stories made this city much more magical, and they attracted more visitors at the same time.
Recently there are many TV programmes such as 'The Amazing Race', 'Running Man', 'Dad, Where Are We Going ' on the screen. While these
programmes were using little tasks to have competitions, they also made propaganda for those local tourism and they helped players and audiences
understand the local culture at the same time. Not only the TV programmes, some new methods also offer small tasks to let tourists learn more about a
city, a country, such asgeocaching, a treasure hunt.

Folklore In Fairy Tales
Folklore by definition is: "traditional customs, tales, sayings, dances or art forms preserved among a people. 2) an often unsupported notion, story or
saying that is widely circulated" (Merriam Webster Dictionary www.merriamwebster.com/dictionary/folklore). We use folklore in our daily lives
without much thought. Every time we tell a joke, pass long an urban legend, repeat a saying or proverb you've heard, as well as every time you read a
fairy tale to a child you are using verbal folklore.
Oral traditions and oral lore is passed down through generations, in poetry, tales, jokes, legends, proverbs and songs. In addition, verbal folklore
has repetitive patterns that quickly identify the type of lore you are about to hear. For example: "a man walks into a bar" you immediately know
you are about to hear a joke, additionally "Once upon a time" identifies a fairy tale. "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" a child's song is folklore in action,
it teaches the different types of farm animals and the sounds they make.

It's a situation that represents a pattern of a human nature. The hero's journey are stages of different adventures that the hero's take. "The journey

creature in it. Then in fairy tales their adventures can be 100% false and have talking creatures that guide them. However legends have the
strongest connection to the archetypal hero's journey. Robin Hood for example had a normal life, he found a problem about the poor, he began to

Characteristics Of Folk Tales
Part l: Lecher states that several factors account for the difficulty the Grimm's and other nineteenth century folklorists encountered in collecting and
retelling folktales in the authentic voice of the folk. Three of these are as follows: 1. The purpose of the collectors and retellers, 2. The judgments of
the collectors and retellers as to what constitutes a good story, 3. The value the retellers place on translating the stories from what is effective in the
oral format into what is effective in the written format (42). I can see why these factors are so important in folk literature, because these stories had to
passes by mouth and those can easily be misunderstood or switched around to make the story sound different. Also, Lecher states that frequently, these
collectors either had preconceived ideas of which stories represented a culture or were not told all the types of stories that members of the culture told
each other (Okpewho, 1983; Berry, 1991) (42). This is an example of how there would be issues in telling folk stories. It happens still today,
sometime hears a story and goes to tell it again but changes it just a little bit, then the next person goes to tell the story and changes it again just a
little bit, and so on and so forth. Also, some people may tell stories that are bias to their culture as said in the quote. Another problem/ misconception
of folk literature is that anyone who has tires to find new stories to retell for young audiences quickly becomes aware

The Oral Tradition Of Khasi
Introduction
In the early days of civilization, before written records were made, oral traditions were necessarily important. Such pre–literate societies relied on oral
transmission to propagate their customs and traditions. A conscious choice has been made in the choice of words for the title of this paper regarding
the use of oral tradition as opposed to oral transmission, the reason being that the language in focus is Khasi. Khasi belongs to the Austroasiatic
language family, a large language family of continental Southeast Asia, also scattered throughout India, Bangladesh, Nepal and the southern border of
China. The name Austroasiatic comes from the Latin words for "south" and "Asia", hence "South Asia". Although most of the 865,000... Show more

The Khasi man travels with a man of the plains. The description of the travel companion clues the listener/ reader into the fact that he is a Brahmin.
The marker of this fact, the Sikha (tuft of hair) is an important part of the narrative. The Brahmin is accustomed to the terrain of the journey, unlike
the Khasi man, who is used to the hills. Nevertheless, they reach God's abode, succeed in gaining retribution and are each given a manuscript that
contains the answer to questions and, most importantly, the script of their languages. As fate would have it, tragedy befalls them in the form of a
massive flood that submerges the plains they were walking. The Brahmin afixes his manuscript to his Sikha and swims away to land, leaving the
desolate Khasi man without a single thought. The Khasi man tries to swim too, but is unable to since the people of the hills would never have
encountered floods of this magnitude. In the course of trying to reach land, the manuscript is lost. Now, the Khasi man must go back to God and
confess his mistake, in the hope of being given another manuscript. Instead of doing so, God decides to teach him whatever was contained in the
manuscript orally. The Khasi man memorizes it all and is told to instruct his people on his safe return home, through the power of spoken

A myth is characterised as being based upon a legend but achieves some symbolic meaning. The story is more fictional and uses supernatural accounts

Urban legends would more accurately be described as contemporary legends, since these legends tend to reflect upon the current time period and deal
with real social issues.
The origins of urban legends are unknown and most are believed to have developed by rumours/ storytelling among a group of individuals. Some
many have actually been sparked by a real event and been altered by personal interpretation to create the urban legends we know of today.
Urban legends tend to have a darkness to them used to give a warning or tell a moral. The study of this type of folklore is important since it is
responsible for revealing the morals, beliefs and fears of the group of people or culture the story circulates within. The elements and storylines
observed helps to give insight of the history and subconscious of the people.
Dr. Jan Harold Brunvand was one of the first people to study urban legends and was the one who coined the term "urban legend". Before when they
didn't have very great significance and were referred to as mentioned, friend–of–a–friend stories or urban belief tales.
He began studying folklore and went to study urban legends further in–depth, in the 1950's and collected research by interaction with people of all
social circles, since internet hadn't been invented yet. Though, he believes the internet plays a significant role today in spreading urban legends but he

First, Death Comes to Daulat Ram is steeped in the elements of folklore and supernatural elements. Ranga, the son of old Daulat Ram always
takes tea in the same restaurant. One day, the barman receives the phone and searches out Ranga. Ranga then gets the news of his father's illness.
The barman tells Ranga about the call without asking him whether he is Ranga. It is also noticeable that Ranga thinks that it may be a bad news.
Then follows the description of the supernatural atmosphere and happenings. Daulat Ram fell sick for several times. But this time, Ranga
experienced many different things. The sun is seen fighting hard with the big black clouds. The trees in the garden had drooped in despair. There
was no blowing wind. The house looked 'widowed'. The creeper on the walls had fallen down at many places. /there was uneasy stillness and no
one was seen around the house. This was unusual. Usually, the lawns of the house were littered with children and maids. The chaprasi was not at his
place and the telephone had been taken away. Strangely enough, none was there except an old beggar sitting near the entrance. Usually, Moti did not
allow any beggar near the house. Moti was seen near the beggar with puzzle in his eyes. The old beggar was not disturbed by the arrival of Ranga or

Meaning Of Folklore Tales
INTRODUCTION
In each country there are lots of folklore stories or also known as folktales that have been told by generation to the younger generations. For
example, in America there are famous folklore stories such as Bloody Mary, Heroes, Villains and so on. In Malaysia, there are also folklore stories that
are famous such as Lady White Snake, Hikayat 1001 Malam, Pak Kaduk, Si Luncai, and so on. Before we discover more about the other side of folklore
, we need to know the meaning of the it.
Folklore is the body of expressive culture, including tales, music, dance, legends, oral history, proverbs, superstitions and so forth common to a
particular population that comprises the traditions of that culture, subculture or group (New World Encyclopedia , 2013). The meaning of folklore
according to Oxford Student Dictionary means the traditional stories and beliefs. The other meaning of folklore is the traditional beliefs, customs and

George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin Essay
George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin
Like many other renowned novels aimed at children, George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin draws extensively from the folk tradition in his
telling of the tale. Many of the figures presented, such as the nurse and Curdie, have precedent in the tradition, but the grandmother in particular stands
out. Archetypally, she is a variant on the Old Man, though she bears the undeniable touch of the supernatural as seen in common folklore– at times she
is otherworldly and some of her actions and abilities are of the sort frequently associated with witches.
The archetype of the Old Man – or, in this case, Old Woman– is one of the most frequently encountered in folk tales, and slips ... Show more content on

At times, she displays more characteristics common to an apparition than any being of the corporeal world. Foremost, she is perceptible for the most
part only to Irene – when Curdie is brought to the attic room he sees nothing more than a musty, abandoned room and hears no more than the cooing of
doves to answer Princess Irene's half of the conversation. The only exception is when Curdie is injured and the grandmother tends him, and he falls
asleep immediately after, therefore perhaps only having seen her due to a receptive, half–conscious state. In addition, she claims to be Irene's
great–great–grandmother, yet no–one the princess asks has heard of anyone, let alone an aged queen, living in the attic. The grandmother is in
remarkably good health for a woman of her advanced years, living alone on nothing more than pigeon's eggs. Apparitions, though, are still bound by
the physical laws of this world in any tale.
Witches, however, regularly have the fantastic attributed to them. The grandmother has a predominating number of qualities and abilities associated
with folklore's view of witchery, though without the taint of associations with a demonic source of power. Magic is apparent in the grandmother's
every interaction with Irene. Although she is five generations removed from the princess, her "face [is] that of a woman of three–and–twenty" and she
tells Irene outright that she is likely to live to see two

The Science Of Folklore By Richard Chase Essay
Just as considering Richard Chase's version of the history of The American MГ¤rchen Jack Tales is naively one–dimensional, so is accepting the
premise that every tale has a single, if meandering, path back to a single culture. The noted folklorist Dr. Alexander Krappe discusses the diffusion of
tales in his book, The Science of Folklore. Dr. Krappe outlines that tales had two different dispersal modes depending on their method of diffusion;
whether by land or sea. If a tale was diffused by land, the story spread in all directions similar to the ripples when an object is thrown into water. As
the ripples move away from the origin, the tale may be modified, changed, and diluted as it progresses until it bears minimal similarities to the
original version. His specific example concerns the tales of the East Europeans, where an original central character is a vampire, but becomes more
'neutral' and 'washed out' as the tale progresses westward until the character of the vampire is replaced with the character of an indifferent robber.
Krappe proposes that tales which were transferred by sea are more likely to remain close to their original version. Krappe illustrates this opinion by
pointing out that the Kirke episode of the Odyssey was carried to India via sea and therefore the Ceylonese variant is more closely aligned to the
Homeric original than any of the other known versions (Krappe 39–40).. The term folk–lore was devised in 1846 by the William John Thomas to

These clarifications lead to another inference that though both anthropology and folklore study human

type of unseelie (bad) fairy. Dullahan are headless beings, although the Dullahan has no head on its shoulders, it carries its head with it. Either on the
saddle–brow of his horse or upraised in his right hand. The flesh of the head is said to have the color and consistency of "moldy cheese". The head's
eyes are black, and constantly dart around; a hideous grin splits the face from ear to ear. The head is also said to glow, acting as a lantern and guide
for its horse, lighting the way. The Dullahan possesses supernatural sight, by holding its severed head aloft, it can see for vast distances across

The Interdependence Of Folklore
Folklore is never 'just' folklore. Folklore is the sharing of the experiences and occurrences that are part of our everyday lives. Whether intentional or not,
everyone is involved in the creation, transmission, performance and assimilation of folklore. Folklore is perhaps the oldest mode of disseminating
human knowledge and information through attitudes, habits, social customs, traditions, and consciously, through the arts of music, poetry, drama,
visual arts, literature and film.
Folklore contextualizes culture. It is the symbiont, which contributes to and borrows from both language and culture. The interdependence of these
three is epitomized by the relationship of the expression of folkore through language and the moulding of language ... Show more content on

Likewise the Folklore Films are made and their existence is a protean one, adapting to time and place–tales that embody artistic and moral energies that
direct the trajectory of change. In the tales we can perceive the people's motivations and sources of psychology renewal, which lead to new ways of
living.
Folk literature also known as verbal art or expressive literature is a broad genre of folklore which is always concerned with the literary traditions
handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. Folk literature is still popular among the Khasis and is treated as an important piece of
their tradition. Folk literature includes both narrative and non–narrative forms, where narrative is found both in prose and in verse forms.
In Meghalaya, there are a few folklore narratives, which have been adapted and reconstructed into films. The first folklore film to be made in
Khasi was 'Manik Raitong' or "Manik the Wretched". The story of "U Manik Raitong" is found in several renditions in prose, poetry and drama.
This film is based on a popular legend which can be found in Nongkynrih (2007), Esther Syiem Nehu Journal (2003) , Bijoya Sawian in the "Muse

How Urban Myths Reveal Society's Fear Summary
In "How Urban Myths Reveal Society's Fears" Neal Gabler discusses the cause and effects of urban myths on society and how they can cause fear
in people. In the first myth, a groom publicly embarrasses his bride by putting a picture of her having a affair with the best man under each of his
reception guests plates. But is it true? There have been numerous accounts of the same story from different locations. Several news papers have tried
to get to the bottom of this tall tale, but to only come up empty handed. This story only appears to be another myth; a story to catch the eye of the
public. These stories have come and gone like the wind, here one minute and gone the next. Often, these stories are fake. In a society like ours today,
stories like these come from Hollywood and are the closest thing we have to modern day folklore. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No, none of these legends are real in any way, shape or form, that's why anything can happen in these stories. Unlike in folktales where the world is
perfect, this world we live in is scary and full of unexpected surprises. "Nothing is reliable and no laws of morality govern."– Neal Gabler. As for
"wedding revenge" it has the greatest fear of all that love is fake and friendship has no meaning to each person. Folklore and fairytale have always
subsisted on terror and fear. Even the cartoons of Walt Disney are really just different stories of fear.Urban legends differ from fairy tales because there
are no obstacles for the main character, and the same with folktales because they can not be taken as cautionary, there is no getting away from
consequences in these stories. In one urban legend, a rat is deep fried and a woman not knowing its a rat eats it. These stories only serve one purpose,

Folklore And The Akan Culture
Folklore in the Akan Culture
Folklore in the lives of the Akans of Ghana comprise of popular oral traditional beliefs, tales, myths, , and practices of the people's customs which has
been disseminated in an informal manner from one generation to the other over and over again in the community. Folklore can also be considered the
roots of expressive genres such as a myth, cultural activity, music, riddles, dance, legends, proverbs, and "wise sayings" which are shared within the
Akan culture. The Akans and the Dagombas of Ghana are two distinct cultures that integrate and embrace the folklore aspects into their traditional lives
and activities.
The Dagombas believe it to be the means by which the unseen or the spiritual world communicates with the living. In view of this, folklores are
endowed in the hands of the elders and the "wise" men in the community to lead ceremonies whenever it is being practiced. The Akans on the other
hand, believe that it is the traditional birthrights of every tribesman to know the norm which defines them as who they really are and their identity.
They integrate a complex system of symbolism in their everyday, ritual, and ceremonial life. Their exquisite intricately woven kente cloth, complexly
stamped Adinkra cloths, carved wooden figures, and the handworks of the gold smiths, exemplifies the resonance of the folk life.

How Celtic Folkore has Influenced My Family Essay
Every family has a unique background that influences the way they live and interact with other people. My parents, who emigrated from Ireland to the
States with my three brothers in 1989, brought over their own Celtic folklore and traditions that have helped shaped the way our family operates and
lives. One aspect of folklore that has helped shape my family dynamic is the Celtic cross–both its background and what role it has played in our lives.
The Celtic cross has an extensive history in relation to Ireland, but it has a simplistic meaning in my family. The Legend of Finn MacCoul is another
piece of folklore that has a different– but no less important– meaning in my family than its origins in Ireland. Although this story has been around...

With the help of other immigrants and traditions that have been passed on, this piece of folklore has become a symbol of both Christianity and
womanhood in my family. As is tradition, my mother would give each of my sisters a Celtic cross when she made her communion. This ritual
extends beyond my immediate family due to our unusually large numbers: while my grandmother is one of eight children, both my mother and I are
one of nine. While these strange familial patterns have never been properly explained, they have created a great way for the bond of the women in
each family to go much further. Since almost all of my extended family still lives in Ireland, the cross is a consoling connection to my aunts and
grandmother who have upheld the tradition. It is also a powerful example of how folklore changed and adapted from Ireland to the United States
(particularly to my family). Both this and the giving of the Celtic cross have created a significant tradition that we were able to maintain when we
came to the United States. Although "the Celtic cross became fashionable as a cemetery marker in Victorian Dublin around the 1860s," it is still an
important part of my religious and familial life (Thuente, 56). It has become an unspoken bond between the women in my family–a bond that is much

sacred whereby it was seen as some type of guardian to the people and provided them with protection and natural needs like rain. The book also
tells of people, who had negative beliefs against the dragons; these were mostly Christians who to some extent even fought with the dragons. The
belief that dragons were strong and mighty was seen as true since people who defeated dragons, mostly armies, were remembered as very great men.
The popular belief that dragons guard great treasures in their caves is seen in this novel whereby the author states that people in those days tried to

Perrault's Red Riding Hood
Red Riding Hood (RHH) is arguably one of the most famous fairy–tales. Told throughout Europe, this tale is folklore–a tradition perpetrated orally,
representing a shared culture or way of life for a group or population – at its finest. Fairy–tales are harder to define –the most commonly accepted being
a subcategory of folklore, intended for children, featuring unnatural creatures and/or requiring use of magic to resolve the situation (Harries, 2003).
Any fairy–tale exists in multiple forms with a number of variations, but with certain traits making it recognizable. In the simplest version of RRH, a

Case Study Of Folklore, Myths And Fantasy
Fairytale, Folklore, Myths and Fantasy: A Case Study based on JK Rowling's Harry Potter series
Abstract
Fantasy is a genre of literature which gives flexibility and scope to the writers to explore their thoughts. Fantasy depends upon the imagination and
creativity of the writer. We can definefantasy as a genre of literature that is far removed from reality, set in a world beyond our thinking such as house
on moon or any other planet, a place in the middle of ocean etc. The characters of fantasy are often uncanny means these are non human creatures such
as elfs, werewolves, giants, trolls, dragons. Many fantasy stories include the elements of folklore and based upon the ancient or cultural myths of the
particular age or dynasty. This article... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can say that myth plays an important role in constructing the plot of the fantasy work. Myth means ideas, thoughts, and images that have the
relationship with folklores, fairy tales, spiritual stories, stories of Gods and legends. Donna Rosenberg has expressed her thoughts on myths in her
introduction to the World Mythology, " Myths symbolize human experience and embody the spiritual values of a culture....Some explain origins,
natural phenomenon, and death; others describe the nature and function of divinities; while still others provide models of virtuous behaviour by
relating the adventures of the heroes or the misfortunes of arrogant humans.(xv) Myths and folklores have a broad range of functions in fantasy
literature. In his article ' Folklore and Fantastic Literature,' C.W. Sullivan III mentions the functions of myth that is particularly important to second
world, or high fantasy. J.R.R. Tolkien has made a great use of fantasy in his On Fairy–Stories. It is not easy for one to think fantasy literature without
taking into consideration the fairytale. Max Luthi states that "The fairytale is a universe in miniature."(25) Fantasy is a very creative art which
requires skills and perfection otherwise it would convey adverse effect. Tolkien thinks that "fantasy is not a lower but a higher form of art, indeed
nearly the most pure form, and so (when achieved) the most potent."(On Fairy–Stories 45) When creating a fantasy, writer uses it as an art and takes
the fantasy very seriously. Fantasy must not to be made fun of, in doing so it loses its power and

Dracula
Modernity and Folklore
Dracula, is not just a story of good versus evil, but a story of complex parallels. Count Dracula is not just a living being, but also dead. Dracula is a
man, but he is also an animal. Furthermore, Dracula is both beautiful and repulsive. It is these parallels about Dracula that create a sense of anxiety and
uncertainty throughout the reading.
Stoker 's use of parallels throughout the novel creates discontent throughout the whole novel. This discontent, not only revolves around Dracula, but
many characters throughout the novel. The uses of the novel 's settings helps to create a unique parallel between modernity and folklore. The parallel
between modernity and folklore taps into the fears of the novel 's earliest Victorian readers and how folklore relates to modern technologies.
The parallel between modernity and folklore is accomplished by the hunting of Dracula and the use of both folklore and modern technologies to defeat

The Interconnectedness Of Cultural Anthropology And Folk...

  • 1. The Interconnectedness Of Cultural Anthropology And Folk... The chief concern of this paper is to explore the interconnectedness of cultural anthropology and folk literature. There are many essays that have already shown the interrelationship between folklore and anthropology1. Both these umbrella terms have many things in common but when it comes to folk literature and cultural anthropology, some distinctions become apparent. To say, hence, this paper is different in a sense that instead of dealing with the broad areas of folklore and anthropology, it looks at their branches and explores interconnectedness between them. Before moving further, one needs to understand the area of folklore and folk literature. American Folklore Society (AFS) defines folklore as "the traditional art, literature, knowledge, and practice that is disseminated largely through oral communication and behavioral example". It clearly hints that folklore is a broad term which includes all the types of expressions whether oral, written, visual, or performative. This leads to an inference that folk literature is one of the branches of folklore which deals with verbal and written expressions. Similarly, anthropology is a jacket term which means a study of humanity including the prehistoric to contemporary, whereas the cultural anthropology is one of its four branches which aims to understand and define why a certain group behaves differently from the other group. These clarifications lead to another inference that though both anthropology and folklore study human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Pepe The Frog: The Reaction Image Pepe the Frog, The Reaction Image One of the easiest ways to describe digital folklore is to look at different examples of it. Personally, my favorite example of digital folklore is memes. Memes are one of the most common and enjoyable forms of digital folklore. Memes are great because they have the ability to express feeling and emotion, spread information on current events, and to make people laugh. From a digital folklorist aspect memes are an ideal piece of folklore as they are spread globally, instantly and have many purposes and unwritten rules. One of my favorite memes, which works best as a reaction, is "Pepe the Frog". Pepe is one of the most comical way to express your feeling towards something as he has so many different emotions and variations. "Pepe the Frog" is not only a good folklore piece but also has an origin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this meme, he has a happy smile and was used as a great reaction to things that feel good. Later on, Pepe was then altered to have a frown captioned with "feels bad man" which started the alteration and development into all the different facial expressions of Pepe today. "Pepe the Frog" has been used by many to show a facial expression even better than words with so many different varieties. Currently "Pepe the Frog" is considered a hate symbol by the Anti–Defamation league (ADL). Reasons why "Pepe the Frog" is considered a hate symbol by the ADL is because of its use from "alt right" groups in anti–Semitic settings. Due to having so many different versions, there has even begun a trend of finding "Rare Pepes" which are "Pepe the Frog" memes that are so unique that they are not found on the internet. With the wide spread popularity of "Pepe the Frog", there is bound to be specific rules to make a particular image a "Pepe the Frog" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These myths reflect the Canadian culture by expressing the need to protect your children. In the end, he takes away their ability to talk. To this day, Canadian Inuit Hunters believe in Sedna and pray for her to release the animals that were born to her in hopes that they may eat. They believe that if men are swept away at sea, they are taken down to comb Sedna's hair and if they do it well, she releases a whale, walrus, or seal. The desire of writers of African oral literature to preserve, assert and showcase their rich cultural heritage to the outside world informed the transfer of oral traditions into the written form. From the colonial era till date, African writers in all genres have taken this as a great challenge to promote this literary tradition. In view of this, writers such as Amos Tutuola, Chinua Achebe, John Pepper Clark–Bekederemo, Wole Soyinka, NgugiWaThiog'o, Ferdinand Oyono, MugoBeti, and a host of others, skillfully infused one form of oral tradition or the other into their literary works.Like the foremost Nigerian writers and most authors of the subsequent generations, Habila visibly weave a handful of African oral resources into his fictional work... According to Chukwuma (2002), oral literature is of great significance in the African context, mainly because it is the traditional form of literary expression bearing in mind the oracular nature of African societies. As discussed earlier, modern African writers incorporate oral products into their writings to garnish them and show their cultural identity to outside the world. While the fusion of oral resources into modern literature is commendable, the utilitarian functions of these materials are not ignored. This is because oral tradition, orature or folklore help to teach young members of the community adherence to social norms, validates social institutions and religious rituals, which all safeguard the sustainability of the best of African traditions and culture (Sone and Toko, 2007). In the same vein, Okafor (2004) commented on the importance of folklore by positing that parents tell their children stories and family history, talk about right and wrong, their children vocabulary, explain how to show respect, and countless other values, attitudes and skills. • 8. Being Greedy Trickster Question 4 In folklore, tricksters are a main character. They deceive other in order to make advances on their own plans and they also cause trouble for other. Thought we do not want to encounter tricksters, tales about tricksters appeal to us and keep the character alive. The reason why the trickster is still alive is because he will never win and can be easily outsmarted. In "Being Greedy Chokes Anansi", Anansi tries to kill other by trying to make them say the word five. This word was banned in the kingdom and anybody who said it would instantly die. When Anansi asks someone what number comes after 4 they say "...One I'm sitting on". Anansi tells them they are wrong and eventually says 5, causing his death. In this story, the trickster appeals to us because he is outsmarted and doesn't win. This makes the reader feel happy because good will always triumph over evil (the trickster). This is also the reason why the trickster is still alive in our own lore. Another reason why the trickster is still alive in our lore is because every story has a different way in which the trickster tries to deceive others, making every story unique to its culture. First of all, though both having been influenced by Buddhism, the reincarnations of main characters in the two stories are somehow different because they are also affected by other ideologies and cultures. In Vietnamese Tam Cam, Tam undergo four times of reincarnation (a nightingale, a white cedar tree, a wooden loom and a persimmon fruit) whereas in Neang Angkat, the girl reborns two times. The reincarnation process of Tam is linked with Confucian ideology of female virtues and behaviour. For instance, her transformation from a persimmon fruit into a human shape to do the housework and cook for the old woman represents the virtue of skillful of work, which is one of four Confucian virtues that Vietnamese women need to obtain (Bui, 2009). Differently, two forms of reincarnation in Cambodian Cinderella – a banana tree and a grove of bamboo only describe two symbolic images of this eastern country. Another difference is the supernatural power. Whereas the "Bб» Ґt" in Tam Cam stands for the Buddha, the Spirit of Virtue in Cambodia's Neang Angkat is said to be stand–in for her dead mother (Bettelheim, 1974). But when some of my friends came to Shanghai and asked me that where they should visit in Shanghai besides those famous places, and I can hardly answer these questions. In most people's mind, Shanghai is a city for shopping, not for sightseeing, because the history of Shanghai is not very long, and most of the tourist attractions in Shanghai are quite new. Lately there are a few supernatural stories about some architectures in Shanghai. Although we can not define the truth of them, they have already made those buildings covered by a mysterious veil. These stories included the appearances, histories, origins, which were not mentioned before. Now more citizens and tourists pay attention to these places. These stories made this city much more magical, and they attracted more visitors at the same time. Folklore In Fairy Tales Folklore by definition is: "traditional customs, tales, sayings, dances or art forms preserved among a people. 2) an often unsupported notion, story or saying that is widely circulated" (Merriam Webster Dictionary www.merriamwebster.com/dictionary/folklore). We use folklore in our daily lives without much thought. Every time we tell a joke, pass long an urban legend, repeat a saying or proverb you've heard, as well as every time you read a fairy tale to a child you are using verbal folklore. Oral traditions and oral lore is passed down through generations, in poetry, tales, jokes, legends, proverbs and songs. In addition, verbal folklore has repetitive patterns that quickly identify the type of lore you are about to hear. For example: "a man walks into a bar" you immediately know you are about to hear a joke, additionally "Once upon a time" identifies a fairy tale. • 15. Characteristics Of Folk Tales Part l: Lecher states that several factors account for the difficulty the Grimm's and other nineteenth century folklorists encountered in collecting and retelling folktales in the authentic voice of the folk. Three of these are as follows: 1. The purpose of the collectors and retellers, 2. The judgments of the collectors and retellers as to what constitutes a good story, 3. The value the retellers place on translating the stories from what is effective in the oral format into what is effective in the written format (42). I can see why these factors are so important in folk literature, because these stories had to passes by mouth and those can easily be misunderstood or switched around to make the story sound different. Also, Lecher states that frequently, these collectors either had preconceived ideas of which stories represented a culture or were not told all the types of stories that members of the culture told each other (Okpewho, 1983; Berry, 1991) (42). This is an example of how there would be issues in telling folk stories. It happens still today, sometime hears a story and goes to tell it again but changes it just a little bit, then the next person goes to tell the story and changes it again just a little bit, and so on and so forth. Also, some people may tell stories that are bias to their culture as said in the quote. The Science Of Folklore By Richard Chase Essay Just as considering Richard Chase's version of the history of The American MГ¤rchen Jack Tales is naively one–dimensional, so is accepting the premise that every tale has a single, if meandering, path back to a single culture. The noted folklorist Dr. Alexander Krappe discusses the diffusion of tales in his book, The Science of Folklore. Dr. Krappe outlines that tales had two different dispersal modes depending on their method of diffusion; whether by land or sea. If a tale was diffused by land, the story spread in all directions similar to the ripples when an object is thrown into water. As the ripples move away from the origin, the tale may be modified, changed, and diluted as it progresses until it bears minimal similarities to the original version. His specific example concerns the tales of the East Europeans, where an original central character is a vampire, but becomes more 'neutral' and 'washed out' as the tale progresses westward until the character of the vampire is replaced with the character of an indifferent robber. Krappe proposes that tales which were transferred by sea are more likely to remain close to their original version. Krappe illustrates this opinion by pointing out that the Kirke episode of the Odyssey was carried to India via sea and therefore the Ceylonese variant is more closely aligned to the Homeric original than any of the other known versions (Krappe 39–40).. As for "wedding revenge" it has the greatest fear of all that love is fake and friendship has no meaning to each person. Folklore and fairytale have always subsisted on terror and fear. Even the cartoons of Walt Disney are really just different stories of fear.Urban legends differ from fairy tales because there are no obstacles for the main character, and the same with folktales because they can not be taken as cautionary, there is no getting away from consequences in these stories. • 29. Folklore And The Akan Culture Folklore in the Akan Culture Folklore in the lives of the Akans of Ghana comprise of popular oral traditional beliefs, tales, myths, , and practices of the people's customs which has been disseminated in an informal manner from one generation to the other over and over again in the community. Folklore can also be considered the roots of expressive genres such as a myth, cultural activity, music, riddles, dance, legends, proverbs, and "wise sayings" which are shared within the Akan culture. The Akans and the Dagombas of Ghana are two distinct cultures that integrate and embrace the folklore aspects into their traditional lives and activities. The Dagombas believe it to be the means by which the unseen or the spiritual world communicates with the living. In view of this, folklores are endowed in the hands of the elders and the "wise" men in the community to lead ceremonies whenever it is being practiced. The Akans on the other hand, believe that it is the traditional birthrights of every tribesman to know the norm which defines them as who they really are and their identity. They integrate a complex system of symbolism in their everyday, ritual, and ceremonial life. Their exquisite intricately woven kente cloth, complexly stamped Adinkra cloths, carved wooden figures, and the handworks of the gold smiths, exemplifies the resonance of the folk life. • 32. How Celtic Folkore has Influenced My Family Essay Every family has a unique background that influences the way they live and interact with other people. My parents, who emigrated from Ireland to the States with my three brothers in 1989, brought over their own Celtic folklore and traditions that have helped shaped the way our family operates and lives. One aspect of folklore that has helped shape my family dynamic is the Celtic cross–both its background and what role it has played in our lives. The Celtic cross has an extensive history in relation to Ireland, but it has a simplistic meaning in my family. The Legend of Finn MacCoul is another piece of folklore that has a different– but no less important– meaning in my family than its origins in Ireland. Although this story has been around... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the help of other immigrants and traditions that have been passed on, this piece of folklore has become a symbol of both Christianity and womanhood in my family. As is tradition, my mother would give each of my sisters a Celtic cross when she made her communion. This ritual extends beyond my immediate family due to our unusually large numbers: while my grandmother is one of eight children, both my mother and I are one of nine. While these strange familial patterns have never been properly explained, they have created a great way for the bond of the women in each family to go much further. Since almost all of my extended family still lives in Ireland, the cross is a consoling connection to my aunts and grandmother who have upheld the tradition. It is also a powerful example of how folklore changed and adapted from Ireland to the United States (particularly to my family). Both this and the giving of the Celtic cross have created a significant tradition that we were able to maintain when we came to the United States. Although "the Celtic cross became fashionable as a cemetery marker in Victorian Dublin around the 1860s," it is still an important part of my religious and familial life (Thuente, 56). It has become an unspoken bond between the women in my family–a bond that is much appreciated with six brothers in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Told throughout Europe, this tale is folklore–a tradition perpetrated orally, representing a shared culture or way of life for a group or population – at its finest. Fairy–tales are harder to define –the most commonly accepted being a subcategory of folklore, intended for children, featuring unnatural creatures and/or requiring use of magic to resolve the situation (Harries, 2003). Any fairy–tale exists in multiple forms with a number of variations, but with certain traits making it recognizable. Myth means ideas, thoughts, and images that have the relationship with folklores, fairy tales, spiritual stories, stories of Gods and legends. Donna Rosenberg has expressed her thoughts on myths in her introduction to the World Mythology, " Myths symbolize human experience and embody the spiritual values of a culture....Some explain origins, natural phenomenon, and death; others describe the nature and function of divinities; while still others provide models of virtuous behaviour by relating the adventures of the heroes or the misfortunes of arrogant humans.(xv) Myths and folklores have a broad range of functions in fantasy literature.
