Film distribution is a process that an audience is available to watch by a film
distributor.
A film distributor is a company or it can be an individual and there job in the
media industry is they help the film production company and the film
exhibitor to be able to secure the placement of the producers film in cinemas
as they help the marketing and circulation within the showcases and for
home viewing.
There are many examples of company's such as Film4, DNA Films, Pathe etc.
3. What Does The Film Distributor Do?
The distributor arranges the exhibitor to rent/book each film. This can be
something like screening the film and/or using other marketing techniques to
make sure that they are able to financially profit when showing the film.
When this has been arranged, there is then a contract that is by the
distributor, which is about the amount of gross ticket sales. This can be paid
to the distributor. The ticket sales is to ensure to be reported accurately to
the exhibitor. Also the distributors have there fair share and the rest gets
transmitted to the production company.
They also sort out the showing times of the film and how many seats will be
in the theatre at that certain time. They also sort out the prints and making
sure that the copy of the film is there at the showcase when the coming out
date is near. If there is a film that has foreign language they are responsible
that the film has subtitles. Also securing the censorship for them film to be
approved in the country.
4. DNA Films
This is an independent film production company that was made in 1997. this
was created by Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew MacDonald. They had 2
successful films in 2007, they are 28 weeks later and sunshine while having
there first successful film at showcases in 2002 called 28 days later and
another successful film in 2006 called The Last King of Scotland.
a synergy happened when the DNA Films paired up with Fox Searchlight
which is part of the 20th Century Fox one time and this specifies in producing
British films and being independent. By doing this, both company's will be
able to gain benefits, for the DNA films, they are able to benefit to access
funds and a worldwide distribution network. While the Fox Searchlight gains
by the cultural and artistic kudos.
