2. What is a film distributer and what
do they do?
In the film industry ‘distribution’ refers to the marketing and
circulation of movies in theatres and for home entertainment e.g.
DVD.
The main objective for a film distributer or distribution company e.g.
Revolver Entertainment is to get a film exhibitor(e.g. showcase
cinemas) to book or rent a film and have it shown on one of their
screens. Fundamentally their job is to get exhibitors interested in the
film and get it the biggest cinema and dvd releases possible in order
to generate the most revenue from the film. They also organise film
advertising material to drum up the most interest in the film and
allow exhibitors to make maximum ticket sales. All advertising is
aimed at the target audience!!
4. Distribution in the UK and who
would distribute my film??
My film will be a low budget independent English film.
This means that my film would be limited in terms of
distribution companies available.
Companies that would potentially distribute a film like mine
would be:
DNA Films
Film 4
Vertigo films
These are all distribution companies in the UK that have dealt
with low budget films such as mine.
5. Example: DNA Films
This distribution company was set up in 1997 and is independent. It has produced
a relatively small number of films that have been very successful:
28 Days Later (2002)
28 Weeks Later (2007)
The Last King of Scotland (2006)
Sunshine (2007)
DNA films have a distribution agreement with Fox Searchlight, a subsidiary of 20th
Century Fox which specialises in independent and British films this works in mutual
benefit as Fox gets kudos for working on more edgy productions and DNA
benefits from Fox’s funds and world wide distribution channels an example of
SNERGY!
This would be good for distribution of my film as it would allow it to be distributed
worldwide and the distribution company would have more funds and means to
distribute my film.
