  2. 2. What is Matter? <ul><li>Everything in the universe that takes up space is classified as matter . </li></ul><ul><li>Mass is the amount of matter something contains. One way to measure the mass of an object is to weigh it. </li></ul>
  3. 3. What is matter made of? <ul><li>All matter is made up of tiny particles that can only be seen with microscopes. These particles are always moving even though we can’t see them. </li></ul><ul><li>How particles are arranged give matter properties. </li></ul><ul><li>Each arrangement is called a state of matter. </li></ul><ul><li>3 states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Solid <ul><li>Has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. </li></ul><ul><li>The particles are close together and move around one point. </li></ul><ul><li>These neat and even stacks of particles give the solid its definite shape. </li></ul><ul><li>video </li></ul>
  5. 5. Liquid <ul><li>Takes the shape of its container. </li></ul><ul><li>Takes up a definite amount of space. </li></ul><ul><li>The particles slip and slide around each other, bumping into container walls. This gives the liquid the shape of the container. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Gas <ul><li>Has no definite shape. Particles move fast. </li></ul><ul><li>Takes up no definite space because a gas will always fill its container. If container is opened the particles move out. </li></ul><ul><li>Particles don’t stay close together. </li></ul>
