Nonverbal communication (NVC) between people is communication through sending and receiving wordless clues. It includes the use of visual cues such as body language (kinesics), distance (proxemics) and physical environments/appearance, of voice (paralanguage) and of touch (haptics).
2. DEFINITION :-
Behaviour and elements of speech aside from the words
themselves that transmit meaning.
It includes pitch, speed, tone and volume of voice,
gesture and facial expressions, body posture, stance, and
proximity to the listener, eye movements and contact and
dress and appearance.
3. It involves conscious and unconscious processes of
encoding and decoding.
Transmission of messages by a medium other than
speech or writing.

4. FACTS :-
Nonverbal communication accounts for 80-90%
voice accounts for 20% and specific words only
about 10%.

culture.

5. CATEGORIES :-
Kinesics :-
It is simplistically called body language.
The study of the way in which certain body movement
and gesture serve as a form of nonverbal communication.
It deals with physical movement, sum time called
affective displays.
It includes use of smiling, frowning, giggling and so on. It
differs by culture.
6. Occulesics :-
It is closely related to kinesics.
It is the study of eye movement, eye behaviour,
gaze, and eye related communication.
Occulesics is a technical term for eye contact.
7. Proxemics :-
It involves a social use of space in communication
situation.
It varies depending on culture.
Intimate space (0-18 inches).
Personal space or informal distance (18 inches-4 feet).
Social space or formal distance (4-12 feet).
Public space or distance (>12 feet.)
8. Chronemics :-
It is study of the role of time in communication.
Formal time is measured in minutes, hours, day
and so on.
It is measured in relative to seasons, social
customs, lunar, etc.
9. Vocalics :-
It is also called paralanguage.
It is study of the voice as a code of nonverbal
communication.
More accurately referred to as the no phonetic
qualities of language.
These includes accent, loudness, tempo, pitch, rate
of speech, nasality and tone, insofar as these convey
meaning.
10. USES OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION:-
To create impressions beyond the verbal element of
communication.
To repeat and reinforce what is said verbally.
To manage and regulate the interaction among
participants in the communication exchange.
To express emotion beyond the verbal element .
11. To convey relational messages of affection,
power, dominance, respect, and so on.
To promote honest communication by detecting
deception or conveying suspicion.
To provide group or social leadership by sending
messages of power and persuasion.
