1. Mast Head: The magazine logo is the largest
piece of text on the cover and positioned at
the top third of the page within the ‘Z’ lines
(the first place the reader looks when scanning
the page with their eyes). This follows the
conventions of a magazine cover and makes it
clearthat the logo is the most significant
feature of the magazine.
Barcode and price: This is a key
convention of a magazine front
cover. Although it is a minor
detail, it is very important to
have on the magazine as it is
informative to the reader and
allows us to buy the magazine.
Cover Star: this is the main image. It
dominates the page and covers some of
the magazine’s logo – assuming you know
what it’s called or can make out from
only covering a small area of the letters.
The cover star looks straight into the
camera to give the effect that she is
looking at the audience. This is called
direct mode of address. The medium
close up shot allows us to see enough of
her face but still be able to see her dress
code which is also very important as ELLE
is a fashion magazine so will be what its
target audience may be most interested
in.
