2. The main function of a magazine front cover
is too sell the magazine. It is the producers
deliberate intention to make it as eye
catching, interesting and visually pleasing as
possible.
3. The main/central image featured on the front
cover is usually the main feature article of the
magazine or the topic of discussion.
The photograph is usually from a studio
enhancing the quality of it overall. The image is
also generally either a close-up or a mid-shot but
on some occasions more of the model’s body
can be seen.
The model always directly addresses the viewer
appearing to have contact with them creating a
more welcoming feel and creating a bond
between the magazine and the viewer.
4. The feature article cover line is always
dominant on the cover page and is often
displayed much larger. This is purposely done
to highlight the key feature of the magazine
and inform the viewer what it is about. This is
the most important title in which the
producers will use to try to sell the magazine.
5. The mast head is always at the top of the
page. This logo/header creates the ‘brand
image’ of the magazine and makes it
instantly recognisable to the viewer.
The mast head usually consists of one or two
words. It either fills the width of the cover or
is positioned in the top left corner.
6. Many magazines use a slogan to explain the
magazine content or to make it stand out
from rival magazines. It is usually positioned
closely to the mast head.
7. The cover/tag lines are lines of text displayed
on the front cover designed to attract the
audiences attention. They also advertise
articles within the magazine enticing the
reader.
8. Most front pages will have a colour palette- a
defined choice of colours to create a
recognisable and distinctive style. A simple
colour scheme looks more effective and
becomes less distracting to the viewer.
9. A variety of fonts can be displayed on the
cover page to make it more appealing to the
viewer. Different sizing of the text suggests
it’s importance.
10. A date and barcode is essential and is always
applied to the magazine cover. They are
usually positioned in the bottom right hand
corner or along the right side. This is also
where the price, issue number and possibly
website will appear.
