1. Masthead – The codes and conventions of magazine design mean that most magazines present their masthead at the top of the page. Although, this is not a bold font is can be clearly identified as the name of the magazine, as it indicates its genre/sub-genre. Also, this magazine is clearly branded as it is partially concealed by the main image; yet, it is still recognisable for the reader to identify it.
Left-third – Often the magazine designers will arrange key information in the left-third, as this is what is shown when magazines are displayed on a shop shelf. In this case, the left-third incorporates various cover-lines and smaller images, which will provide an insight into the magazine and indicate which magazine genre this is.
Main image – It is not often that the main image will include more than one person. Even so, it relates to the main cover line ‘All Angels’, which denotes a group rather than an individual. Each person in the group is directly addressing the target audience, which engages the reader. Also, their facial expressions and stance demonstrate a positive persona in association with the magazine. Thus, if they are happy to represent the magazine, readers will be happy to purchase it.
Header – The header incorporates a cover- mount as this will encourage more readers to purchase the product. Often it is the header that the reader notice first; thus by highlighting the word ‘favourite’, it makes it more appealing to the target audience, as like the cover mount, it acts as a persuasive device, to encourage the reader to buy the magazine.
Main cover line – Although the colour of the cover line does not correspond with the colour scheme, it connotes this idea of value and purity, which relates to the idea of ‘Angels’. This supports the main image of the group of girls, dressed in white, which also represents innocence. Towards the end of the cover line, the font decreases in size, as it refers to the smaller image of ‘The Choirboys’, which suggest these are not as significant as the ‘angels’.
Barcode/Date/Issue/Price – These are important features that must be included when selling a magazine. Usually it is small, as it does not relate to the main image or cover line, but it must be big enough for it to be easily identified.
