Packaged sewage treatment (with de-nitrification)
AHET’s packaged sewage treatment
plant (STP) is a virtually self contained system
for sewage treatment that is 'plug & play'
It comprises of one outer tank constructed from
non-corrosive FRP that includes adequate
primary and two stage secondary treatment
(for de-nitrification)
For each model of the packaged STP, tertiary
treatment is available in the form of skid-
mounted sand and carbon filter or a membrane
bio-reactor (MBR) as an optional add-on
Treatment of sewage is mandatory for all
industries in industrial zones and also for
housing societies with an area over 20,000 m2

Residual nutrients in treated sewage – especially nitrogen – makes it conducive for
algal growth in the presence of sunlight
Sewage contains biodegradable organics (BOD) as well as nutrients like nitrogen and
phosphorus
Why de-nitrification is important
The algae makes the treated sewage unsuitable for reuse. Algal growth gives rise to
a foul smell, clogs pipes and fittings and also increases the toxicity of the water
National Green Tribunal’s norms for treated sewage specify BOD < 10 mg/l, suspended
solids < 10 mg/l, total nitrogen (TN) < 10 mg/l and fecal coliform (MPN 100 ml) < 230
Conventional STPs treat BOD but cannot reduce nutrients like nitrogen or
phosphorus

Packaged STP process
Sedimentation and separation chamber:
Separation chamber separates larger matter (like plastic pieces, sachets etc.)
Heavier particles settle in the 1st chamber due to higher density
Anaerobic chamber:
The first stage of the biological process; consists of media on which the anaerobic bacteria grow
Anaerobic bacteria decompose the organic matter (BOD & COD) – almost 50 to 60% degradation
Anaerobic bacteria do not require oxygen for their survival and growth (hence, no blower required)
Aerobic chamber:
The second stage of the biological process; consists of media on which the aerobic bacteria grow
Aerobic bacteria decompose the residual BOD & COD
Aerobic bacteria require oxygen (blower is provided)
Air is supplied to the chamber by a diffuser for efficient oxygen transfer
Treated water chamber:
NaOCl dosing system is provided for disinfection of the treated water

Tertiary treatment process (add-on)
Option 1: Skid mounted sand carbon filtration
Comprises of sand and carbon filters along with feed and
backwash pump and control panel
Mounted on a compact skid
Sand and carbon filters are housed in a non-corrosive FRP
construction
Option 2: MBR
Compact MBR module placed in the final chamber of the
packaged STP
MBR membranes are robust, flat sheet back-washable type
Membrane porosity 0.04 micron (ultrafiltration membrane)
Membrane material of construction is Polyether Sulfone (PES)
Membranes also have unique self healing property; small pin
holes (if any) are blocked during running
