1. Summary of findings into music magazines
- Music magazines reflect the current music scene from around the world so they
must change with this to survive and succeed.
- You must give the audience what they want so that they continually buy the
magazine over and over. This can be found out by target audience research such as a
focus group.
- There must be good articles which reflect the magazines genre, these must be good
enough to drawn in an audience away from other magazines using such things as
exclusives.
- Your own magazine must have an unique style that makes it stand out from
competitors
- Most importantly, they must be aware of AIDA:
A – Attract audience, use of bright colours, image and text
I – Interest, articles and sell lines should entice the audience.
D – Desire, lure the reader by adding competitions, posters or give freebies
A – Act – people to buy your product, motivate them into purchasing, for example, creating
a sense of urgency with a limited-time offer or limited supply.
Research:
- Front covers; Masthead, barcode/price/date, striking image,
- Contents; The word ‘contents’, date/issue number, images, mention the features,
title of magazine,
- Double page; Image dominated, article is dramatic and short, 2 – 3 paragraphs of
text,
All 3 should be connected by the use of certain elements:
- Same font
- Same colour scheme
- Magazine title
- Info on front is used throughout
- Contents is consistent with the magazine features
- Same style of language throughout
Summary of research into genre:
My chosen genre is indie rock and I have found that:
2. - Type of alternative rock that started in the UK and USA in the 1980s
- Bands include Arctic Monkeys, and The Wombats.
- Often associated with alcohol, cigarettes, skinny jeans, and long hair.

Example double page spread:
3. I have also found out that bright colours, the latest news, gig guides, exclusive interviews
and variating pictures are all features I want in my magazine.
Types of images found in NME
ALTERNATIVE, FUN, DARK, MODERN, SOME FRIENDLY, STRANGE POSES, BANDS, ARTISTS,
AND A GOOD VIBE.
Overall conclusion of my target audience research using questionnaires. (NB the points
below are just examples. You must change these to reflect what you found out from your
target audience research)
I can conclude the following and will summarise how this will affect the making of my
magazine:
1. THE COVER SHOULD BE:
• bright but moody
• feature images of top indie bands (the most popular artists were muse and the
killers so i will base my fictional band on them
• offer freebies such as posters/band merchandise (will look at kerrang and see how it
incorporates freebies
• have gossipy sell-lines as well as indie –rock related cover-lines
• have a header summarising main contents
• attractive with unusual images/shots etc
2. THE CONTENTS SHOULD INCLUDE:
4. • band info
• lots of variety of rock images and info
• be rebellious/with attitude
• minimum of 50 pages
• gig guides
• interviews with bands such as…
3. THE ARTICLE SHOULD BE:
• informal and chatty
• include questions and answers
• have lots of images
• use sub-headings to break up writing
• be about the music but interesting-possibly with fashion and/or politics
4. GENERAL INFO
• None of my potential target audience have ever bought a music mag, but would
consider it if the price were right and was more focused to them. The majority thought
around £2.00 was ok and most felt the current magazines were targeted more to Males who
were in their twenties and thirties
• I also have to work on attracting the audience in the first place as there is a real gap
in the market for my magazine which targets males and females (aged 15-19) and interested
in indie rock music. I will analyse my target audience questionnaires and focus groups in
more detail so I can work hard on giving the audience what they want and therefore attract
them to buy the magazine.
Having summarized these results I am now ready to complete my formal proposal and start
planning my own music magazine.
