2. CONVENTIONS…
Through the research I have found out many points about the conventions
that need to be found on a music magazine. In the pop magazine there
are different conventions such as the masthead, pictures of the artists
and the double page spread that we can discover more about.
3. FRONT PAGE
• The masthead is the title of the magazine and usually appear at the top
or the top left of the magazine.
• The masthead should have a lot of changes in every magazine so that
people can recognise the logo, also the design of the masthead must be
relate to it’s genre and target audience, so that the masthead can attract
into audience’s eyes
• The magazine that targeting the female audience are tend to have a
more colourful front cover than the magazine that aiming at male
audience as male audience do not like product which is too colourful.
• The masthead forms a core art of the House style. This has been used
in a lot of different magazine
4. IMAGES
• There are always a images of the artists on the front cover which usually
appear as a medium shot or medium close up, so that audience can know
which artists it is as the artists are the main selling point of the magazine.
• On the other hand a long shot or medium long shot is typically used for band.
• The images usually occupied a large space on the cover, and sometimes the
image will cover the masthead of the magazine as the artists is the main USP
of the product and the audience should recognise the logo/masthead of the
magazine.
• Usually the images of the artists is posing and looking toward the camera,
which creates a direct address to the audience.
• The artist must gives out ideologies to the audience or represent a certain
messages, for example some female artist represent the David Gaunlett’s
theory as they are in control their sexuality.
5. CONTENTS
• The content page of a pop magazine should be colourful with pictures
so that it can attract younger audience as they are unsophisticated
foxthinker
• In the content page there are a lot more of text and information about
the artists and the story within the magazine
• There are a variety of page number so that audience can find it easy to
find the story that they are looking for
• There is also sub-heading for the audience to know what is inside the
magazine
• The colour of the content page will normally keep the style as the front
page, but this might not always be the case
6. COVER LINE
• The cover line of the magazine should relate to the featured artists and
the story In the double spread page so that the cover line can attract the
audience’s attention
• Some of the magazine will have a big cover line ( usually known as a
Splash) with the artist’s name on it, which can introduce and tell the
audience who he/she is.
• There are usually few cover lines on the front cover which tell the
audience what is inside the magazine.
• The font of the cover line should be the same although some of them
might present in different colour.
7. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
The double page spread should relate to the artists on the front cover, also
the pages should based on the interview about the artist such as
lifestyle.
There should be a large image of the celebrity between the two page so that
audience can recognise he/she. The photographer usually uses the Rule
of third to get a better quality images of the artists.
The colour of the background of the double page spread is normally the
same as the background on the front cover
There might be some sub image or pull quote which uses another colour as
it can attract audience attention.
There are also form convention as the magazine might use certain colour to
represent the artist, for example using red colour to represent women
are empowered.
8. INSTITUTION CONVENTION
As I have research about different institution company for
different magazine, I have found out that the conglomerate are
more likely to produce more one type of media product, for
example Bauer Media have separate radio station for ‘Q’ music
magazine and ‘Kerrang!’, which shows that their institution can
do synergy marketing and horizontal integration as they have
more money. On the other hand institution such as Time Inc. UK
are less likely to produce than more than one type of media
product as they are independent and they have less budget
than the others institution such as Bauer Media.
