Gender and Sexualisation
My magazine is an indie/rock magazine so I decided to target both female and male (14-25
years old) this is because I don’t feel that this genre of magazine has a niche target audience
unlike a pop magazine- this genre of magazine would likely be targeted at young teenage girls
due to stereotypes.
I believe that my magazine is targeted at ‘real music lovers’ therefore I don’t think that an A
list celebrity would be that appreciated by my target audience of male and females. The cover
of my magazine is an image of a average looking young male man. Therefore there is not that
much of sexual connotations or attraction between my readers and the artists. This also
emphasises the genre of my magazine, because predominately on an indie/rock magazine you
would expect to see someone of similar characteristics.
Age
My magazine represents the age group of young adults, this is evident from the male on my
cover. I tried to target different social groups by taking into account the age of my target
audience. I decided to target teenagers/young adults because I feel that this demographic
would have a wider knowledge and interest in music/gigs and festivals as opposed to the
older generation.
I tried to make my magazine as versatile as possible, I did this by not using sexist colours, and
even though my model is male I still think this will appeal to both genders. This is because
the male is a casual looking artist so many male readers will not feel threatened by him and
many females may find that attractive.
My magazine doesn’t attract the younger age group (13years old and below) because I think
that they would appreciate more mainstream and new music for example pop and music that
is prominent in the charts. Therefore by producing a music magazine without a mainstream
approach will target a specific and niche target audience, where the age will vary. I think this
creates a unique industry product.
I have represented my target audience through the posture/positioning of the male artist on
my cover and through the clothing he chooses to wear. The male wears a casual demine top
adding to indie/rock vibe and is holding a microphone.
Class
My magazine relatively targets the middle class, this is because my magazine isn’t expensive
to purchase. However i didnt target my magazine at the lower class because i dont think that
this target audience will have excessive amounts of disposable income to purchase my
magazine, it is more likely to be spent on necessity items such as food and clothing. Whereas I
think the middle class will have the right balance.
Because my magazine is targeted at young adults/teenagers it would be more likely for their
parent/guardians to provide them with the income. When i handed out my questionnaire
£2.50 was the modal number which my target audience thought was a reasonable price,
therefore this is why i chose this price.
My contents page also represents the social group that i targeted this is because of the
subscription feature that i included. This offers a discounted price for my magazine which i
think would entice my target audience to purchase the magazine.
The young artist on my cover could also represent the middle class status as he is dressed in
reasonably good clothing, an not tracksuit bottom which would send the incorrect
connotations for my magazine. The clothing is not over extravagant targeting the rich.
However, the class is difficult to judge because the a not a representation of how much
money someone earns or what is trying to be potrayed. One thing that is clear is the music
that is being portrayed.
Ethnicity
• My magazine cover is based around a white artist, this is a
disadvantage to my magazine as it doesn’t represent the
cultural diversity around the world. I haven’t expressed ethnic
diversity. However the majority of artist in the music industry
tend to be predominately of a white origin, this shows that
many white artists are popular therefore the ethnicity of my
singer will still be able to attract a wider target audience.

  • 1. How does your product represent particular social groups?
  • 2. Gender and Sexualisation My magazine is an indie/rock magazine so I decided to target both female and male (14-25 years old) this is because I don’t feel that this genre of magazine has a niche target audience unlike a pop magazine- this genre of magazine would likely be targeted at young teenage girls due to stereotypes. I believe that my magazine is targeted at ‘real music lovers’ therefore I don’t think that an A list celebrity would be that appreciated by my target audience of male and females. The cover of my magazine is an image of a average looking young male man. Therefore there is not that much of sexual connotations or attraction between my readers and the artists. This also emphasises the genre of my magazine, because predominately on an indie/rock magazine you would expect to see someone of similar characteristics.
  • 3. Age My magazine represents the age group of young adults, this is evident from the male on my cover. I tried to target different social groups by taking into account the age of my target audience. I decided to target teenagers/young adults because I feel that this demographic would have a wider knowledge and interest in music/gigs and festivals as opposed to the older generation. I tried to make my magazine as versatile as possible, I did this by not using sexist colours, and even though my model is male I still think this will appeal to both genders. This is because the male is a casual looking artist so many male readers will not feel threatened by him and many females may find that attractive. My magazine doesn’t attract the younger age group (13years old and below) because I think that they would appreciate more mainstream and new music for example pop and music that is prominent in the charts. Therefore by producing a music magazine without a mainstream approach will target a specific and niche target audience, where the age will vary. I think this creates a unique industry product. I have represented my target audience through the posture/positioning of the male artist on my cover and through the clothing he chooses to wear. The male wears a casual demine top adding to indie/rock vibe and is holding a microphone.
  • 4. Class My magazine relatively targets the middle class, this is because my magazine isn’t expensive to purchase. However i didnt target my magazine at the lower class because i dont think that this target audience will have excessive amounts of disposable income to purchase my magazine, it is more likely to be spent on necessity items such as food and clothing. Whereas I think the middle class will have the right balance. Because my magazine is targeted at young adults/teenagers it would be more likely for their parent/guardians to provide them with the income. When i handed out my questionnaire £2.50 was the modal number which my target audience thought was a reasonable price, therefore this is why i chose this price. My contents page also represents the social group that i targeted this is because of the subscription feature that i included. This offers a discounted price for my magazine which i think would entice my target audience to purchase the magazine. The young artist on my cover could also represent the middle class status as he is dressed in reasonably good clothing, an not tracksuit bottom which would send the incorrect connotations for my magazine. The clothing is not over extravagant targeting the rich. However, the class is difficult to judge because the a not a representation of how much money someone earns or what is trying to be potrayed. One thing that is clear is the music that is being portrayed.
  • 5. Ethnicity • My magazine cover is based around a white artist, this is a disadvantage to my magazine as it doesn’t represent the cultural diversity around the world. I haven’t expressed ethnic diversity. However the majority of artist in the music industry tend to be predominately of a white origin, this shows that many white artists are popular therefore the ethnicity of my singer will still be able to attract a wider target audience.
