This project was made by Aparna Agnihotri, Soumya Badola and Simran Nagar. It presents a brief introduction to flow charting, and goes on to show how creating a flow chart of a college's admission process can help in identifying and addressing problem areas in the process.
2. A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an
algorithm, workflow or process, showing the steps as boxes
of various kinds, and their order by connecting them with
arrows. This diagrammatic representation illustrates a
solution model to a given problem. Flowcharts are used in
analyzing, designing, documenting or managing a process
or program in various fields.

4. The symbols that are commonly used in Flowcharts have
specific meanings and are connected by arrows indicating
the flow from one step to another:
Oval: Ovals indicate both the starting point and the ending point of
the process steps.
Box: A box represents an individual step or activity in the process.
Diamond: A diamond shows a decision point, such as yes/no or
go/no-go. Each path emerging from the diamond must be labelled
with one of the possible answers.
Circle: A circle indicates that a particular step is connected to
another page or part of the Flowchart. A letter placed in the circle
clarifies the continuation.
Triangle: A triangle shows where an in-process measurement
occurs.

6. There are three major form of Flowcharts. These are:
Macro: High Level Overview; Entire Process; Links
with other Processes (the Big Picture)
Micro: Operational Level; Practical Links between
Inputs & Outputs; Operational Measurements
& Controls
Hyper-Micro: Design Level; Details into Operator
Methods; Material or Information (Input)
Specification (Accuracy & Precision);
System Functionality
7. Shows only the major steps of the process
Includes only 6-8 steps
Used to understand or communicate a big-picture view of the major
steps in a process
Used before drawing a more detailed flow chart
Decisions, delays, and recycle loops are usually not shown on macro
flow charts
Only symbols needed are rectangles & arrows
The micro-level, or ground level, view provides a very detailed picture
of a specific portion of the process by documenting every action and
decision.
It is commonly used to chart how a particular task is performed.

11. No provision of Online Application: The whole
application booklet has to be filled by hand and then mailed
by post. This leads to delays in application submission and,
also filling the application is cumbersome.
Clustered structure of Admission Process: A lot of
departments are involved in admission process. The
students have to move about a lot, leading to confusion and
unnecessary wastage of time.
Branch not allotted prior to reporting at college:
Students get to know their branch only after reporting to
college. So they cannot decide beforehand whether they
want admission or not.
12. Applications should be made online.
Branch Allocation should be done along with seat
allotment.
The fee payment should be done before calling
students for document verification.
Complete Admission process should be in a
centralised building from medical verification to
hostel allocation.
13. The effectiveness of flowchart was understood by
the team.
The differences between macro and micro
flowcharts was made clear.
We understood the various symbols used in
making a flowcharts.
How to isolate problem areas by flowcharting was
understood.
An insight was gained into the admission process
of the college.
