The gluteal region contains several important muscles. The gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus are the three large superficial muscles responsible for hip extension, abduction, and rotation. Deeper small muscles like the piriformis, gemelli, obturator internus, and quadratus femoris also rotate the hip. The gluteal region is supplied by the superior and inferior gluteal nerves and arteries.
