Text Messaging Affecting Literacy
Outline
Introduction
Text messaging has become a very popular way to communicate for teenagers and it seems to be
altering the literacy of teens and also affecting the way they speak.
Text messaging has lead to many teenagers to become iliterate. With more teens resorting to texts
and emails to communicate with others the literacy is changing over time.
The impact that text messaging has on literacy of teens is important because the generations will
slowly become more reliant on the texting slang. As the literacy decreases due to the texts and
emails each generation will slowly create a new view of what literacy is.
Literacy is affected by different aspects of texting. The things that effect it include the access texting
gives you to autocorrect, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teenagers use texting as their main way to communicate which forces away face to face talking and
the requirement of using the correct way to read write and speak.
The way teenagers speak such as saying acronyms in conversations and abbreviations for words out
loud is proof that the grammar used to text is affecting the words we use for communication.
Speaking to people of importance or even just a family friend would require you to have literacy
skills so that they can understand what you are saying but the generations to come may form a new
thought of the requirements of what literacy is.
Conclusion
It is becoming evident that the way teenagers read write and speak is being impacted by the
percentages rising of the numbers of text messages that are being sent by teens daily.
The use of autocorrect that allows teens to not have to know how to correctly spell, cyber slang, and
also the way texting creates a barrier from how they speak are all affecting the literacy that is needed

Text Messaging’s Effects on Our Society Essays
While text messaging has enabled us to have instant communication, it has impaired our society's
ability to communicate verbally, can potentially put users at risk, and allows users to exploit
themselves and others in the touch of a button. Text messaging is "a form of wireless
communication where users send or receive short, digital messages electronically" (Galloway–
Shoemaker). Over the years, texting has developed into an exceedingly popular trend that the
majority of Americans owning cellular phones use today. Text messaging has definitely made a
tremendous impact on our society, both positively and negatively.
Text messaging began in the early 1990s, beginning with the first text message being sent from Neil
Papworth to Richard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is expected that on average, teens send fifty texts a day as compared to ten for adults (Gross). In
years to come, the percentage of adults who text will equal that percentage of teens, having risen in
the past year from sixty–five percent to seventy–two percent (Text Message Marketing Service).
One positive effect that text messaging has on our society is the ability to communicate with others
instantly. It allows parents and teens to contact each other more efficiently without the fear of
interrupting or disturbing the recipient if they are at a place where they cannot accept a phone call.
Accepting a phone call can be time consuming and requires an environment that enables the receiver
to talk, whereas texting is usually short and to the point and can be done anywhere (Galloway–
Shoemaker). Text messaging, therefore, allows the recipient to respond to the sender at their
convenience (Gray). Also, text messaging helps people stay in constant, immediate touch with one
another, regardless of location and whether the text is important business or simply social. In an
article, Amanda Knowles mentioned, "The ability to send text messages gives teens and parents the
convenience of simple communication. Teens can easily text message a change of plans, arrange for
rides, or ask a simple question, while parents are able to keep up to date of their teen's activities and
whereabouts." This is extremely useful

The Message Of Text Messaging Essay
Text messaging turns out to be most prevalent path for youngsters to stay in touch with today and is
also destroying the way we are communicating. Presently we can utilize online networking to get
our messages out to thousands or millions of individuals uncensored. Everything is always showing
signs of change; especially technology. Since change is unavoidable, rather than opposing it,
individuals should figure out how to grasp and adjust to it. With each new innovation comes the
obligation of taking care of it. All technological innovations must be utilized with social and moral
obligation. This paper will clarify the Christian Worldview on the utilization text messaging and
how technological innovation is supposed to be consumed properly.
Text messaging is now the most popular form of daily communication between adults, new figures
show. Text messaging has overtaken speaking on a cellphone and up close and personal contact as
the most–utilized strategy for every day correspondence in the middle of loved ones (Grant &
Meadows 2014). The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 by Neil Papworth, a 22 year
old engineer from his personal computer. The text message read "Merry Christmas." Omnipoint
Communications, the principal GSM transporter in America, set up the first text messaging service
in the United States. Omnipoint not long after offered the primary messaging between the US and
whatever remains of the world, beginning a 160 character smaller scale

The Is A Mobile Messaging App For Sending Text, Voice, And...
Known in Chinese as Weixin, "micro message," WeChat is a mobile messaging app for sending text,
voice, and photos to friends and family. It was launched just 4 years ago by Chinese investment
holding company Tencent, one of the largest internet companies in the world. As of earlier this year,
WeChat had more than 500 million monthly active users among over one billion registered users,
almost all of them in Asia.
WeChat quickly gains popularity due to its features and appearance. It allows users to easily connect
with family and friends by providing text messaging, video call, hold–to–talk voice messaging,
group messaging, sharing of photographs and videos, and location sharing. Compared to some other
duplicate apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat has more features that allow users get to know more
friends via "Drift Bottle," "Shake", and "Look Around." This app is free and is available on many
phones, and it requires user to have it installed on a phone in order to use it.
Below, we highlight nine of WeChat 's features that keep the user base strong.
1. Video Call. It allows users to make face–to–face video calls. The process is just like dialing your
contact in your cell phone's contact book.
2. Voice Message. It can simplify your chat messages. If you are spending hours drafting a long text
message, think about sending a WeChat voice message instead. You just need to hold to talk. In such
way, WeChat turns your smartphone into a walkie–talkie. You can use that feature under the

Text Messaging: Interpersonal Communication Analysis
Over the last decade, text messaging has evolved from a new way to communicate, to a primary
form of communication, specifically among teens and young adults (Reardon, 2008). The popularity
of texting has shown overtime, that certain people may even have a preference for non–verbal
communication. Although text messaging is convenient in many ways, it can have negative impacts
on communication and the people using it. These impacts can be minor, such as a small
miscommunication, or major, by effecting the way we socialize as humans, with emotion and tone
(Chaney, 2014). Interpersonal communication is where I believe text messaging has the largest
potential for negative impact, with all nine subjects involving the sender and receiver, to cause ...

In this example, there were no issues with the sender, since the only people involved in the
conversation were my mother and I and we were the only senders and recipients of any text
messages (Hahn, 2014). The first important issue that led to the miscommunication would be
encoding (Hahn, 2014). My mother took the lack of response and felt that I intended to ignore her
because I was possibly mad. I was really just busy at the time and did not have a spare moment to
respond back. To avoid this, my response could have been sooner in order to relieve my mother's
worry. The message is the second area where there could have been an issue (Hahn, 2014). The
message itself could have been too short and may have ended too abruptly for my mom to realize
that there were no underlying meanings behind the one I actually had sent. It would have been a
better choice to explain that I was about to get my daughter ready for bed, so she would know why I
wouldn't be responding right

Text Messaging Enhances Language Essay
Text Messaging Enhances Language
My younger brother sits as his computer everyday after work to "talk" to his friends through
America Online (AOL) Instant Messaging (IM). They use terms like BRB (be right back) and LOL
(laugh out loud) that seem a little confusing to the "out–dated" older sibling. It amazes me that he
can carry on a conversation using abbreviations for virtually every word or phrase. It doesn't even
bother him anymore that I peek over his shoulder to see what they're "talking" about, because he
knows it's foreign to me and I can't understand it anyway. As I watch my younger brother on the
computer at night, I realize that our habits of reading and writing are changing through modern
computer technology like instant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On CNN's website, American University professor Naomi Baron suggests "American society has
become sloppy about the mechanics of writing. Problems arise when people use the casual language
in other forms of written communication... when the reader may not be familiar with the casual
language." This type of written language strays from the traditional academia writing we are used to
reading. Just like with any new language, if you're not familiar with the words, it will be difficult to
understand.
Sven Birkerts suggests in his essay "Into the Electronic Millennium" that "our students are less and
less able to read, analyze, and write with clarity and purpose... Everything they meet within the
world around them gives the signal: That was then, and electronic communications are now" (63).
Terms like BRB and LOL were not covered in the style manuals (William Strunk and E.B. White's
Elements of Style or Joseph Williams' Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace) that we read for class,
but for the new generation of students, clarity and purpose in writing involves these short
abbreviated words and sentences. That's what teenagers today grow up with. For example, I was
asking a high school sophomore if she could call one of her teammates, and her response was "she'll
be online tonight, I'll just IM her." The use of the standard telephone (with a cord, not a cell phone)
is outdated. IM and its'

2b And We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem With Text Messaging
Today, from toddler to senior citizen uses phone. The most used applicable applications in phone are
the text or SMS. I wonder how many people even know what does SMS stands for. We use the short
message service to communicate easily because it's short and quick. The two articles "2b or not 2b"
by David Crystal and "We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging" by Jeffrey
Kluger both talks about communicating through texting and our use of language. Crystal is in favor
for texting and Kluger is against texting. I agree with Kluger when it comes to this topic, I feel
learning how to have a conversation face to face is very important. "I talk to kids and they describe
their fear of conversation," says Turkle. "An 18–year–old I interviewed

Reality Is Broken By Steven Spielberg: Article Analysis
Steven Spielberg, who is an famous American director, producer, and screenwriter, said
"Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our
lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine
something wonderful, because we're too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office
on the cell phone" (Brainyquote.com). The lifestyle for today's world is totally different from our
parents world. As the days go on it's a big gap between us, as in education methods, social media,
and all the advanced technology in our lives. Untimely, there are many forms of technology in
today's world that is different from our parents world. One type of technology that is different in
today's world is text messaging. For starters, parents like to spell everything out, use ... Show more

my little brother come home and play video games on the computer instead of going outside doing
different activities. My mom get so upset when he runs in the house and hop on the computer to play
games. Another example, is in the article "Reality Is Broken" the article explains that today's kids
play video games all day and get no excise (McGonigal 198). Kids should really do half and half,
spend some time outside and some time playing games. It will be better for the kids health.
Ultimately, there are many different types of technology that have a huge affect on a person's life.
Technology made life so much easier, some older people think it makes a person "dumb" but I do
not agree with that. Some of the technology in today's world will still be here, some will not. Newer
and better things will come along the way. Everyone should enjoy the new technology as much as

Adolescents Text Messaging: Article Analysis
Article 1 The Blackberry Project: Capturing the Content of Adolescents' Text Messaging The
authors examines different communication techniques which leads to cyberbullying through their
methods by using different applications to help them understand why is cyberbullying still taking
place. The authors' purpose of this study is to determine the relations between adolescent's electronic
communication (text messaging) and their social life and how there is a strong connection between
adolescent's behaviour and traits on and offline. Researchers pick one–seventy–five 15–year–old
adolescents, 81 girls and 94 boys from various cultures: African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.

The author's main focus is to navigate if there is a link between cyberbullying (mostly caused by cell
phones and computers) affecting victims or the bully's self–esteem in a negative or positive way.
The author pays particular attention if there are external factors which leads to cyberbullying such as
beliefs, personal values and interpersonal conflicts. The author uses an effective method to find a
correlation between the two factors. A survey is given out to a random sample of 1963 students from
30 middle schools in the United States to adolescents between grade 6 to grade 8 which included
their age, gender and race. The students had to fill out a survey of 10 questions which would
determine youth's self–esteem levels. Moreover, after finding out the results of self–esteem levels
among the youth, two other surveys were given out which would help the authors get a clear view of
the link between cyberbullying and self esteem. First survey is about prevalence and type of
cyberbullying victimisation which would address about the youth's experience as a victim. The next
survey is about prevalence and type of cyberbullying offending which would give the results for
being a bully. I believe this was an effective method used by the authors because it asked various
questions and covered various topics in its survey, the authors also used software such as SPSS and
alpha level of 0.5 to get a better understanding of the data. The article is objective because the
methods and the results are based on the statistics that were collected and not on personal opinions.
This is an useful source because it relates back to my own topic which is cyberbullying platforms
and effects on social relationships. The results of the article would help me build on my own topic
by giving me a clear view on how cyberbullying affects youth's self–esteem and affect

Advantages Of Two Way SMS Texting
What is 2 way SMS?
Two way SMS uses short codes and keywords to send text messages to mobile users. Not like
traditional SMS texting, 2 way SMS requires end users to send a keyword to a known short code to
receive an automatic reply.
What is two way SMS text messaging?
Two way SMS is what you can receive and send a text message to have a conversation with the
recipient. This let a contact center agent carry on a text–based chat with people reschedule
appointments via text. Customers expect communication to be two–way regardless of how complex

Text Messaging Is A Problem At School
Since the rise of the internet in the 1990s, and the sending of the first text message in 1992,
technology has rapidly become essential to our lives in the 21st century. Our generation relies on
phones to communicate instead of just talking in person or writing a letter. People are so connected
to the internet that we forget all the little things that matter around us. Some say that it does have an
impact on literacy, and others believe that it does not and that it is simply just another form of the
English language. The biggest problem is that text messaging is a problem at school. Slang is
damaging students' writing and teachers are worried that children will bring slang words into the
classroom and their writing. Text messaging has become detrimental to academic literacy.
Cellphones have become one of the necessities in todays modern lifestyle for every teenager and
adult. People depend on cell phones for accomplishing their day to day activities in their
professional and personal lives. Everyday over 5 billion text messages are sent. People are so
engaged in sending things to their friends at a rapid speed. People walk around with their fingers
glued to their phones and not caring about anything else in the world. Phones are causing this fear
that "text messaging language" will soon replace the standard English language and young people
will become unable to use the language properly. Most Americans (adults and students) cannot go

Text Messaging : The Enemy Or No Big Deal?
TXTNG – NME or NBD?
"IYO TXTNG = NME or NBD?" Translation: "In your opinion, is text messaging the enemy or no
big deal?" As more and more students immerse themselves in a new language that they use over
their cell phones and Blackberries, a number of educators worry that the writing skills of their
students are suffering (Ring, 2006). However, other educators see little evidence that the language of
texting is having a negative impact on students ' schoolwork. Is the prevalence of text messaging
something to worry about? Should educators fear the use of texting in their classrooms? WDYT?
For you old–timers, that means: what do you think? This paper will discuss the negative aspects
associated with text messaging or texting as it is commonly known, the scope of this practice in
current schools, and how this seemingly negative phenomenon can be used in a positive manner.
Texting, a modern scourge?
Texting refers to the use of abbreviations and other techniques to craft short–messaging service
(SMS) and instant messages. Texting seldom follows the standard rules of English grammar or usual
word spellings. Short–message format routinely sacrifices grammar, syntax, and punctuation for the
sake of slang and brevity (Baggott, 2006). According to Vosloo (2009), texting is so pervasive that
some regard it as an emerging language in its own right. This is largely due to the proliferation of
mobile phones as well as internet–based instant messaging (IM). As a result of their

How Is Text Messaging Affecting Teen Literacy and...
Almost a generation of teens have access to a phone with text messages. They spend so much time
shorting words, they lose the ability to be literate. Teenagers today are more worried about their
phones, in school or out of school, causing them to drop their grades and get them in lots of trouble.
The telephone was invented in 1870 by Gray and Bell, who then battled over the true inventor of the
telephone, which Bell won. Bell then began experimenting with electrical signs, which brought the
telegraph to be an established means of communication (Bellis). In 1876, Bell made his first call to
Thomas A. Watson in March. People thought Bell's invention was a toy, but later people wanted a
phone installed in their homes, towns, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teenagers interact socially with text messaging, that has increased frequency. With more
communication, negative effects can now take place. Teens now talk less face–to–face with texting
communication (Welton). In 2000, fourteen billion text were sent out monthly. In 2010, 188 billion
were being sent out over the United States (Kluger). Among the young, not all of the growth has yet
to come out of old fashioned phoning (Kluger). Parents these days are going out buying kids nine
years old smart phones. Not telling them what and what not to do, little kids are starting out to
young with a telephone. Decreasing their ability to learn in school, parents need to start taking the
kids phone away at a reasonable time so they can get a good nights rest. Also not letting them take
their phone to school, to having an advantage of getting on the internet looking up violent stuff. Text
messaging took a big turn around when people started taking advantage of it and started sending
rude, hateful, naughty stuff. Texting while driving, sexting, and bullying gave modern society a
number of new challenges. Explicit photos were being sent out by mobile phones, where that led to
be the biggest problem with texting. Teenagers began to think that it was okay to send nudes out,
little did they know people started forwarding them to their friends. One in five teenage girls have
admitted taking nudes of themselves (Cooke). Teenagers that take pictures can end up threatened or
even humiliated,

Need for study
With general overview of today's society, cell phones are becoming a modern day necessity among
teenagers. The reason why they are in so much demand is because of text messaging which is the
most popular mode of communication these days. The need to study this particular topic is to find
out the impact of this mode of communication on teenagers, both positive and negative. And also to
see whether it is actually a necessity or just a trend which is followed because of its popularity. In
this research we are also going analyse the future impacts of text messaging on teenagers. How
mobile companies are using the increased use of text messaging to their advantage is also discussed
in this research project.
Statement of problem There have been many ill effects on education pattern of students, because of
these text messaging phenomena. The institutions are finding it hard to cope with this habit of
teenagers as it is leading to a lot of distraction and also parents are worried because of falling grades
of their kids. The biggest issue of all is that student are not ready to detach themselves from their
mobile phone. That's why even if institutes and parents come up with a solution to the problem, it is
next to impossible to implement it.

C: Conclusion about this detail: It is very important to first acknowledge the dangerous impact of
this distraction's alarming statistics that shows about the safety of driving while texting. Many
people don't see and think about the consequences that can occur in this situation. More and more
companies are implementing new strategies, for instance, signing a pledge not to use the phone
while on the road, and these new changes are adding more responsible drivers. But it is still not
enough to say that we have gained control over the problem. V: Conclusion: Therefore according to
the facts and statistics that were shown previously, people that are still texting while driving might
think that they can juggle these big frames of steel they drive every day, with devices like their cell
phones without paying the price, are greatly mistaken! First off, no one can say that texting while
driving is not one if not the most dangerous action one can do behind a motorized vehicle. What can
refute that problem that seems all around us whether commuting or not. Consequently due to the
nature of the cell phone use while behind the wheel drivers should not have permission under any
circumstance to text while driving. Regardless of the stance every individual takes on this matter,
people need to realize the importance of this issue and implement the good driving behaviors. As

Cell phones have been engineered over the past years to accommodate the demand of texting, such
as offering a full 1QWERTY keyboard (QWERTY is the acronym that commonly describes today's
standard keyboard layout on English–language computers), and many cell phone carriers offer plans
that contain unlimited texting. An example of one of this cellphones/smartphone would be the ever
popular IPhone, which holds functions that enables the users to be able to call/text/email and even
use special apps that give direct access to the internet or a social networking site. According to
Lenhart, 77% of adults and 71% of teenagers owned a cell phone and 38% of those teenagers (12–
17 years old) used their phones to text daily (30). A year later, the same survey was administered
with results increasing to 54% who text daily (30). The same survey was again administered from
the Pew Research Center by Lenhart in 2012 with the results increasing to 84% of Americans ages
12 and up owning a cell phone and 63% of teenagers saying they exchange text messages daily (2).
The problem is texting is giving teenagers the option to avoid face–to–face interactions and causing
teens to lose important social skills. Fraser J.M. Reid, (Associate Head at the Centre for Thinking

Introduction
The primary purpose of the present research was to gain a better understanding of how text
messaging has affected adolescent (teenagers) communication skills. This study focuses on some of
the effects and likely problems arising out of the use of these text messaging. Texting is the
preferred mode of contact for nearly all social and communication activities, socialization and self–
expression of the adolescents. They are also the quickest to adopt text messaging. In today's world
everyone in and around us are using mobile phones every day. Children today are receiving cell
phones at an age as young as eight years old; more than 35 percent of children in second and third
grade have their own mobile phone. Because of this, the texting language is integrated into the way
that students think from an earlier age than ever before. They shorten words by using symbols to
represent the word or symbols whose name sounds like a syllable of the word such as 2day or b4.
This is commonly used in other languages as well.
This study will examine that whether texting SMS will impact on language and writing skills of the
teenagers and their social lives, and other related issues. The evolution of technology over the last
decade or so has happened at rapid speed. Not only innovative gadgets have been introduced but

Difference between Text Messaging and Abbreviations
Social media sites such as Twitter only allow a limit of 140 character per tweet. This limits the
amount of words you can use in a tweet. This forces the users to get their ideas across in the shortest
way possible. For many, this results in the use of text talk. This is a type of shorthand and it creates a
whole new language consisting of abbreviations. LOL, BRB, SMH and TTYL are a few examples of
the abbreviations from this text talk language, theses terms are used every day amongst teens. These
text terms add more to a sentence and in text more then just a simple abbreviation for a word or
phrase. Abbreviations as short has three letters can add a whole new tone to what is said over a text
massage. LOL (laugh out loud) for example is used to add a joking or playful tone to a messages
"almost like a type of punctuation" and in some cases it replaces a punctuation. This abbreviation

Hipaa Compliance And Technology Use Essay
HIPAA compliance and technology use: In 1996 when Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted HIPAA compliance and the use of technology was not
given that much importance as it is today. Only small percentage of people owned mobile phones
twenty years ago which didn 't have a lot of capabilities of communicating except the basic text
messaging. Twenty years later the mobile device technology is much advanced and has much more
capabilities and much faster than imagined. Advanced capabilities include messaging, internet
access, e–mails and ability to take pictures and be able to send using the mobile device.
The problems with medical organizations staying HIPAA compliant with modern technology: The
faster and more functional mobile devices with Multi capabilities raised concerns regarding the use
of the technology and HIPAA compliance. Concerns relating to patients privacy and
ePHI(electronically protected health information) security. Due to these concerns regulations within
HIPAA were enacted in 2013 to address these concerns.
Legislation related to use of technology to comply with HIPAA requires insurance companies,
health care providers, employers insurance, to implement administrative, physical and technical
safeguards for protecting the confidentiality of patients information which prevents a breach of
ePHI. If a breach of ePHI occurs, Healthcare providers, employers, third party service providers and
insurance companies are liable for

Text Messaging: Article Analysis
Mobile communication such as the use of cell phones have created an age of instant accessibility,
with the main source of communication being via text messaging. Text messaging is a growing trend
with young adults. College students use texting more than any other form of telecommunication and
consider it to be an essential part of their social lives. (Murdock, 2013) The rise of text messaging
has come about so quickly that few have stopped to ask how is this always available status and high

Murdock chose first year college students as a sample group considering the first year of college
comes with its own stressors that can affect levels of cell phone use. I feel that this may have
unintended consequences in the results found by Murdock, showing higher than anticipated negative
impact on wellbeing. A longitudinal study of college students would be helpful in weeding out
anomalies that might skew results. As the students adjust to college life it would be useful to see
how texting helps or hinders the wellbeing of the students. The results from a longitudinal study
could help new college students in regulating stressors in their life and having healthy texting habits.

Youngster DRIVING
The most essential thing that the parent of a high school driver can do is to be straightforward with

Communication Technology And Its Effects On Society
What form of communication technology is forcing people to engage with each other in less face to
face situations? According to CNN in August of 2012, "The number of text messages sent monthly
in the U.S. exploded from 14 billion in 2000 to 188 billion in 2010". Texting with the use of
technology is what started fewer phone calls that some people still remember doing. Text messaging
is ruining us in multiple ways, loss in entertainment, less social activity and loss of interpersonal
skills. The point at hand is due to the use of technology, people are losing the ability to be able to
communicate effectively in face to face situations thanks to the convenience of sending a text
message.
When I was younger entertainment came at the expense of my imagination. The issue these days is
that kids are glued to the phone for social media, texting, or for some that still send emails.
Exercising the mind is something everyone does whether they know it or not, but what is the real
problem. Our generation now will paint you a different view on their perspective of conversation,
compared to my generation. As of today technology has taken over our lives and will continue to do
so if we do not put a stop to the excessive use of smartphones when people are standing in front of
us. Not to mention it is also rude to be staring down at the screen while someone is talking to you.

Text Messaging
Text messaging is a very controversial subject in our society, possibly even in other cultures. Some
complain that texting is overused and abused while others praise the most recent developments and
upgrades of texting. The pervasive use of text messaging in today's society has many facets;
however, the bad is said to outweigh the good. Any individual's perspective on the issue will most
likely depend on their age group or social class. For example, a fifteen year old would appreciate the
convenience and speed of text messaging but a fifty year old would most likely not need the texting
function on their cell phone; therefore, the speed and convenience of text messaging would become
irrelevant. Mobile–based coordination, as Ling calls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scarcity of understanding among the groups can cause tension, fighting, and even resentment.
The majority of text message conversations are built on forming a response as soon as you can. No
one really notices that the hidden idea behind this general statement can actually lead to a need for
instant gratification. Not only does this "necessity" cause severe impatience, it also causes an
absence of attention to many things such as school or one's communal life. When I text during a
math or science class where something has to be explained in steps, I lose all of my focus and do not
understand what the teacher is explaining. This most likely occurs in other types of situations such
as business meetings or even dinner dates. Texting while driving has become the most prevalent
cause of traffic accidents in America today. "The general finding here is that the mobile telephone
increases reaction time and that it demands that better could be afforded driving" (Ling 49). Those
who take the risk of texting and driving have a subconscious belief that they can avoid a car accident
even though they are more focused on the cell phone rather than driving. This belief has killed
approximately 2,600 people a year and caused six percent of all traffic accidents

Text Messaging : An Integral Part Of Society
Remember the days when people only used their cell phones in case of emergency? Those days are
long gone now, as many people can't seem to go a second without their phones. This is, in part, due
to the invention of text messaging and its continued increase in usage over the past decade or so.
The creation of all these different texting apps, such as WhatsApp, Viber, etc., has made texting very
easily accessible, even to those who can't afford cell phones. For instance, some of these apps, such
as iMessage and textPlus, are free and can be downloaded through any Apple device, including
iPads and iPods. Text messaging is now an integral part of society, as it has become one of the main
forms of communication over the last few years, being used even more frequently than calling. In
spite of popular belief, the increase in the use of text messaging has led to a socially ruined society,
in which people seem to almost have forgotten how to properly communicate and how to interact
with one another. One way in which the increase in text messaging has ruined society is with the
change in the type of language people use when they are texting. This has, in turn, lowered many
people's IQ, by causing everyone's spelling and grammar skills to decline substantially. Shortening
words such as "you" to "u", skipping commas and periods, and using abbreviations such as "smh" or
"lol" (even when they're not actually laughing) are just some examples of the ways texting language
has evolved.

"Our generation doesn't ring the doorbell. They text or call to say they're outside," this line is from
one of the well–known social networks, Tweeter, which shows how the way of communication has

smartphone owners aged 18 to 24 send 2,022 texts per month on average – 67 texts on a daily basis

The result verified that there is evidence of a decline in grammar scores based on the number of
abbreviations in their sent and received text messages (Swayne and Messer). In other words, the
word abbreviations and punctuation short–cuts that famously used in text messaging can alter
individuals' ability to recognize and apply proper spelling, grammar and punctuation techniques in
writing and daily life communication. If the uses of abbreviations are not controlled from the
beginning, both sender and receiver of text messaging will be associated with how poorly they will
perform on the test based on the level of standard literacy they have.
Nevertheless, not all researchers think alike, some of them will probably dispute the contradict claim
such as what Dr. Clare Wood; Reader in Developmental Psychology at Coventry University has said

between two people or even for business interactions. She celebrate the fact that, "A person is able

The term cost behavior is used to describe whether a cost changes as output changes. In this case the
costs are tightly shielded. In order to describe the cost behavior of the industry, we have to study the
process that results in cost incurrence. Based on the information in the AT&T case, the industry
features a high proportion of fixed costs in relation to acquiring spectrum and building a network.

How strong a relationship should exist between the prices charged to a customer for a good or
service and the cost of providing that good or service?
We think that companies should calculate their break–even point for their goods and services and to
charge the prices according to that figure. This way, they can make sure that their price covers their
expenses. In case of AT&T's text messaging they are charging much more than the cost. But because
there are only four national carriers in United States and they control 90 percent of the market, and
text messaging had become widely popular, they can afford high prices. They are considering the
demand of the service and pricing the product according to demand and supply.
5. Why is the price that AT&T charges to transmit a kilobyte of data via text message so much
higher than the price charged to transmit a kilobyte of data via a Smartphone?
The fastest growing wireless industry is text messaging. This also reflects the earlier comment that
demand for messaging far exceeds supply, therefore driving prices up. Even though it costs less to
transmit a text message than data, it is still seen as a very low cost to the average customer. The
customer feels like they are getting a good deal because they are using the text messaging more than

Teenagers and Short Text Messaging
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Text messaging is the most widely used data appliance in the world,
with 2.4 billion users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers (Tedeschi, 2008). Market analysis
reveals that consumers purchase phone applications readily because it is effortless to download an
application onto their mobile phone and also since cash out of pocket is not required, it simply gets
added to their phone bill. Teenagers represent the largest spectrum of these consumers, who are
eager to show off the stunning features of their new phone to their peers. Parents typically pay the
cost of their cell phone plans and typically are unaware of small charges made on the account. Most
phone application downloads range from free demos to $9.99 pricing. As this venture is maintained
via the internet and cell phone, little to no overhead is required. Most of the costs of goods sold are
represented in the marketing of the product. With grant backing from the National Science
Foundation, Venture Capital investors and built–in licensing fees paid direct; TravellingWave can

The Pros And Cons Of Smoking Cessation
Based on the combined data provided by two surveys suggest that cell phones and smartphones are
not just a practical alternative tool suitable to be used in smoking cessation program. Mobile phones
are freely accessible and thus can be a functional source that could provide those who want quite a
discrete avenue to do so. The same can be said for the opposite as mobile phones can also provide a
public forum for those who want to intervene and force someone they know to quit smoking
cigarettes.
Text Messaging As A Smoking Cessation Method
Over the past decade, text messaging has become one of the most affordable and easily accessible
form of communication. Along with the earlier mentioned growing number of young adults using
tobacco products. These can go hand in hand due to the fact that text messaging can be used to
promote healthy behavior to a huge amount of the U. S. population. Around 98% of the population
has text messaging on their phones. thus a text based smoking cessation program can not only be
cost effective, but can also provide interactive personalized counseling to a young college student.
Text messaging smoking cessation programs can make this one–on–one counseling much easier
since of the 70% of smokers that want to quit, only 51% actually meet with a physician to seek that
type of help to attempt to quit.
Most of these text messaging smoking cessation programs consist of motivational messages three to
five times a day, that usually has a personalized goal with a timeline. These programs keep you
consciously aware of these goals throughout your day to hold the participant accountable.
Methods for Text Messaging based Smoking Cessation
These programs usually start with a baseline assessment to give the participant a target goal and
amount of time expected for the intervention. Usually these intervention last for 12 weeks and are
separated into three stages (pre intentional, intentional, action), which is based on the status and
intent to quit smoking:
The pre intentional stage receives text messages based on their risk, the amount of money they are

burdens of maternal deaths and preterm births. This type of communication has also been explored

Linguists Mixed On Effects Of Text Messaging On Students
Smartphones are influencing the behaviors and the way of thinking of users worldwide. Language,
for example, is affected by smartphones due to text messaging. A user's writing and speech can be
changed because of the usage of abbreviated words and shortcuts. Specifically, text messaging
impacts students in the classroom because it establishes a trend, enforces disorganized thoughts in
written communication, and the use of word abbreviations and shortcuts are used in a daily basis.
Text messaging creates a craze in a specific way of using communication in writing and in speech. It
establishes lingos that should not be used in one's academic life. As stated by Naomi Baron in

have become more and more ways for people to use written communication to express their
thoughts. Where there was once snail mail and emails, now things have become as instantaneous as
a text message or Tweet. Since people seem to write with such haste and almost carelessness today,
it is important for students to be provided with slower paced writing exploration in the classroom. In
"Writing for the Instant Messaging and Text Messaging Generation: Using New Literacies to
Support Writing Instruction," Sheelah M. Sweeney states, "Teachers may be concerned about the
way some students write [...] imagining the potential negative impact on their students' academic
writing, but this interest can be an instructional advantage" (Sweeney, 2010, p. 121). While naturally
there may be cause for concern with the way students can erroneously communicate so quickly
through the written word, the unease teachers may have will actually be a good thing for students if
these educators move forward with awareness instead of ignorance. Technology is one aspect of
society that will not be regressing in the future, and the best way educators can adapt to this is by
incorporating these advancements into the education of students in years to come.
This article states that instead of shunning

Text Messaging Affecting Literacy

  • 1. Text Messaging Affecting Literacy Outline Introduction Text messaging has become a very popular way to communicate for teenagers and it seems to be altering the literacy of teens and also affecting the way they speak. Text messaging has lead to many teenagers to become iliterate. With more teens resorting to texts and emails to communicate with others the literacy is changing over time. The impact that text messaging has on literacy of teens is important because the generations will slowly become more reliant on the texting slang. As the literacy decreases due to the texts and emails each generation will slowly create a new view of what literacy is. Literacy is affected by different aspects of texting. The things that effect it include the access texting gives you to autocorrect, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Teenagers use texting as their main way to communicate which forces away face to face talking and the requirement of using the correct way to read write and speak. The way teenagers speak such as saying acronyms in conversations and abbreviations for words out loud is proof that the grammar used to text is affecting the words we use for communication. Speaking to people of importance or even just a family friend would require you to have literacy skills so that they can understand what you are saying but the generations to come may form a new thought of the requirements of what literacy is. Conclusion It is becoming evident that the way teenagers read write and speak is being impacted by the percentages rising of the numbers of text messages that are being sent by teens daily. The use of autocorrect that allows teens to not have to know how to correctly spell, cyber slang, and also the way texting creates a barrier from how they speak are all affecting the literacy that is needed for ... • 3. Text Messaging’s Effects on Our Society Essays While text messaging has enabled us to have instant communication, it has impaired our society's ability to communicate verbally, can potentially put users at risk, and allows users to exploit themselves and others in the touch of a button. Text messaging is "a form of wireless communication where users send or receive short, digital messages electronically" (Galloway– Shoemaker). Over the years, texting has developed into an exceedingly popular trend that the majority of Americans owning cellular phones use today. Text messaging has definitely made a tremendous impact on our society, both positively and negatively. Text messaging began in the early 1990s, beginning with the first text message being sent from Neil Papworth to Richard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is expected that on average, teens send fifty texts a day as compared to ten for adults (Gross). In years to come, the percentage of adults who text will equal that percentage of teens, having risen in the past year from sixty–five percent to seventy–two percent (Text Message Marketing Service). One positive effect that text messaging has on our society is the ability to communicate with others instantly. It allows parents and teens to contact each other more efficiently without the fear of interrupting or disturbing the recipient if they are at a place where they cannot accept a phone call. Accepting a phone call can be time consuming and requires an environment that enables the receiver to talk, whereas texting is usually short and to the point and can be done anywhere (Galloway– Shoemaker). Text messaging, therefore, allows the recipient to respond to the sender at their convenience (Gray). Also, text messaging helps people stay in constant, immediate touch with one another, regardless of location and whether the text is important business or simply social. In an article, Amanda Knowles mentioned, "The ability to send text messages gives teens and parents the convenience of simple communication. Teens can easily text message a change of plans, arrange for rides, or ask a simple question, while parents are able to keep up to date of their teen's activities and whereabouts." This is extremely useful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Message Of Text Messaging Essay Text messaging turns out to be most prevalent path for youngsters to stay in touch with today and is also destroying the way we are communicating. Presently we can utilize online networking to get our messages out to thousands or millions of individuals uncensored. Everything is always showing signs of change; especially technology. Since change is unavoidable, rather than opposing it, individuals should figure out how to grasp and adjust to it. With each new innovation comes the obligation of taking care of it. All technological innovations must be utilized with social and moral obligation. This paper will clarify the Christian Worldview on the utilization text messaging and how technological innovation is supposed to be consumed properly. Text messaging is now the most popular form of daily communication between adults, new figures show. Text messaging has overtaken speaking on a cellphone and up close and personal contact as the most–utilized strategy for every day correspondence in the middle of loved ones (Grant & Meadows 2014). The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 by Neil Papworth, a 22 year old engineer from his personal computer. The text message read "Merry Christmas." Omnipoint Communications, the principal GSM transporter in America, set up the first text messaging service in the United States. Known in Chinese as Weixin, "micro message," WeChat is a mobile messaging app for sending text, voice, and photos to friends and family. It was launched just 4 years ago by Chinese investment holding company Tencent, one of the largest internet companies in the world. As of earlier this year, WeChat had more than 500 million monthly active users among over one billion registered users, almost all of them in Asia. WeChat quickly gains popularity due to its features and appearance. It allows users to easily connect with family and friends by providing text messaging, video call, hold–to–talk voice messaging, group messaging, sharing of photographs and videos, and location sharing. Compared to some other duplicate apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat has more features that allow users get to know more friends via "Drift Bottle," "Shake", and "Look Around." This app is free and is available on many phones, and it requires user to have it installed on a phone in order to use it. Below, we highlight nine of WeChat 's features that keep the user base strong. 1. Video Call. It allows users to make face–to–face video calls. The process is just like dialing your contact in your cell phone's contact book. 2. Voice Message. It can simplify your chat messages. If you are spending hours drafting a long text message, think about sending a WeChat voice message instead. You just need to hold to talk. In such way, WeChat turns your smartphone into a walkie–talkie. You can use that feature under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Text Messaging: Interpersonal Communication Analysis Over the last decade, text messaging has evolved from a new way to communicate, to a primary form of communication, specifically among teens and young adults (Reardon, 2008). The popularity of texting has shown overtime, that certain people may even have a preference for non–verbal communication. Although text messaging is convenient in many ways, it can have negative impacts on communication and the people using it. These impacts can be minor, such as a small miscommunication, or major, by effecting the way we socialize as humans, with emotion and tone (Chaney, 2014). Interpersonal communication is where I believe text messaging has the largest potential for negative impact, with all nine subjects involving the sender and receiver, to cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this example, there were no issues with the sender, since the only people involved in the conversation were my mother and I and we were the only senders and recipients of any text messages (Hahn, 2014). The first important issue that led to the miscommunication would be encoding (Hahn, 2014). My mother took the lack of response and felt that I intended to ignore her because I was possibly mad. I was really just busy at the time and did not have a spare moment to respond back. To avoid this, my response could have been sooner in order to relieve my mother's worry. The message is the second area where there could have been an issue (Hahn, 2014). The message itself could have been too short and may have ended too abruptly for my mom to realize that there were no underlying meanings behind the one I actually had sent. It would have been a better choice to explain that I was about to get my daughter ready for bed, so she would know why I wouldn't be responding right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Text Messaging Enhances Language Essay Text Messaging Enhances Language My younger brother sits as his computer everyday after work to "talk" to his friends through America Online (AOL) Instant Messaging (IM). They use terms like BRB (be right back) and LOL (laugh out loud) that seem a little confusing to the "out–dated" older sibling. It amazes me that he can carry on a conversation using abbreviations for virtually every word or phrase. It doesn't even bother him anymore that I peek over his shoulder to see what they're "talking" about, because he knows it's foreign to me and I can't understand it anyway. As I watch my younger brother on the computer at night, I realize that our habits of reading and writing are changing through modern computer technology like instant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On CNN's website, American University professor Naomi Baron suggests "American society has become sloppy about the mechanics of writing. Problems arise when people use the casual language in other forms of written communication... when the reader may not be familiar with the casual language." This type of written language strays from the traditional academia writing we are used to reading. Just like with any new language, if you're not familiar with the words, it will be difficult to understand. Sven Birkerts suggests in his essay "Into the Electronic Millennium" that "our students are less and less able to read, analyze, and write with clarity and purpose... Everything they meet within the world around them gives the signal: That was then, and electronic communications are now" (63). Terms like BRB and LOL were not covered in the style manuals (William Strunk and E.B. White's Elements of Style or Joseph Williams' Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace) that we read for class, but for the new generation of students, clarity and purpose in writing involves these short abbreviated words and sentences. That's what teenagers today grow up with. For example, I was asking a high school sophomore if she could call one of her teammates, and her response was "she'll be online tonight, I'll just IM her." I wonder how many people even know what does SMS stands for. We use the short message service to communicate easily because it's short and quick. The two articles "2b or not 2b" by David Crystal and "We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging" by Jeffrey Kluger both talks about communicating through texting and our use of language. Crystal is in favor for texting and Kluger is against texting. I agree with Kluger when it comes to this topic, I feel learning how to have a conversation face to face is very important. Reality Is Broken By Steven Spielberg: Article Analysis Steven Spielberg, who is an famous American director, producer, and screenwriter, said "Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we're too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone" (Brainyquote.com). The lifestyle for today's world is totally different from our parents world. As the days go on it's a big gap between us, as in education methods, social media, and all the advanced technology in our lives. Untimely, there are many forms of technology in today's world that is different from our parents world. One type of technology that is different in today's world is text messaging. Kids should really do half and half, spend some time outside and some time playing games. It will be better for the kids health. Ultimately, there are many different types of technology that have a huge affect on a person's life. Technology made life so much easier, some older people think it makes a person "dumb" but I do not agree with that. Some of the technology in today's world will still be here, some will not. The authors' purpose of this study is to determine the relations between adolescent's electronic communication (text messaging) and their social life and how there is a strong connection between adolescent's behaviour and traits on and offline. The author's main focus is to navigate if there is a link between cyberbullying (mostly caused by cell phones and computers) affecting victims or the bully's self–esteem in a negative or positive way. The author pays particular attention if there are external factors which leads to cyberbullying such as beliefs, personal values and interpersonal conflicts. The author uses an effective method to find a correlation between the two factors. A survey is given out to a random sample of 1963 students from 30 middle schools in the United States to adolescents between grade 6 to grade 8 which included their age, gender and race. The students had to fill out a survey of 10 questions which would determine youth's self–esteem levels. Moreover, after finding out the results of self–esteem levels among the youth, two other surveys were given out which would help the authors get a clear view of the link between cyberbullying and self esteem. First survey is about prevalence and type of cyberbullying victimisation which would address about the youth's experience as a victim. As more and more students immerse themselves in a new language that they use over their cell phones and Blackberries, a number of educators worry that the writing skills of their students are suffering (Ring, 2006). However, other educators see little evidence that the language of texting is having a negative impact on students ' schoolwork. Is the prevalence of text messaging something to worry about? Should educators fear the use of texting in their classrooms? WDYT? For you old–timers, that means: what do you think? This paper will discuss the negative aspects associated with text messaging or texting as it is commonly known, the scope of this practice in current schools, and how this seemingly negative phenomenon can be used in a positive manner. Texting, a modern scourge? Texting refers to the use of abbreviations and other techniques to craft short–messaging service (SMS) and instant messages. Texting seldom follows the standard rules of English grammar or usual word spellings. Short–message format routinely sacrifices grammar, syntax, and punctuation for the sake of slang and brevity (Baggott, 2006). According to Vosloo (2009), texting is so pervasive that some regard it as an emerging language in its own right. This is largely due to the proliferation of mobile phones as well as internet–based instant messaging (IM). As a result of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This forces the users to get their ideas across in the shortest way possible. For many, this results in the use of text talk. This is a type of shorthand and it creates a whole new language consisting of abbreviations. • 52. Text Messaging : An Integral Part Of Society Remember the days when people only used their cell phones in case of emergency? Those days are long gone now, as many people can't seem to go a second without their phones. This is, in part, due to the invention of text messaging and its continued increase in usage over the past decade or so. The creation of all these different texting apps, such as WhatsApp, Viber, etc., has made texting very easily accessible, even to those who can't afford cell phones. For instance, some of these apps, such as iMessage and textPlus, are free and can be downloaded through any Apple device, including iPads and iPods. Text messaging is now an integral part of society, as it has become one of the main forms of communication over the last few years, being used even more frequently than calling. In spite of popular belief, the increase in the use of text messaging has led to a socially ruined society, in which people seem to almost have forgotten how to properly communicate and how to interact with one another. One way in which the increase in text messaging has ruined society is with the change in the type of language people use when they are texting. This has, in turn, lowered many people's IQ, by causing everyone's spelling and grammar skills to decline substantially. Shortening words such as "you" to "u", skipping commas and periods, and using abbreviations such as "smh" or "lol" (even when they're not actually laughing) are just some examples of the ways texting language has evolved. ... Abbreviations were created to take place of words, making texting and communication easier and quicker. Although some believe that these abbreviations are being involved in formal writing. Cullington states, "[Jacquie Ream] blames the use of acronyms and shorthand in text messages for students' inability to spell and ultimately to write well" (Cullington 362). Michaela Cullington did some research of her own to figure out whether this is true or not. She questioned seven students, and two high school teachers, on their opinions about the impact of texting on writing as well as analyzing student writing samples. What are the implications of this cost behavior for cost–volume–profit (CVP) relationships? The term cost behavior is used to describe whether a cost changes as output changes. In this case the costs are tightly shielded. In order to describe the cost behavior of the industry, we have to study the process that results in cost incurrence. Based on the information in the AT&T case, the industry features a high proportion of fixed costs in relation to acquiring spectrum and building a network. Variable costs are relatively low and, in the case of text messages, are very low. The cost structure in the wireless industry is dominated by fixed costs, so the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How strong a relationship should exist between the prices charged to a customer for a good or service and the cost of providing that good or service? We think that companies should calculate their break–even point for their goods and services and to charge the prices according to that figure. This way, they can make sure that their price covers their expenses. In case of AT&T's text messaging they are charging much more than the cost. But because there are only four national carriers in United States and they control 90 percent of the market, and text messaging had become widely popular, they can afford high prices. They are considering the demand of the service and pricing the product according to demand and supply. 5. Why is the price that AT&T charges to transmit a kilobyte of data via text message so much higher than the price charged to transmit a kilobyte of data via a Smartphone? The fastest growing wireless industry is text messaging. This also reflects the earlier comment that demand for messaging far exceeds supply, therefore driving prices up. Even though it costs less to transmit a text message than data, it is still seen as a very low cost to the average customer. The customer feels like they are getting a good deal because they are using the text messaging more than the data ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Teenagers and Short Text Messaging EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Text messaging is the most widely used data appliance in the world, with 2.4 billion users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers (Tedeschi, 2008). Market analysis reveals that consumers purchase phone applications readily because it is effortless to download an application onto their mobile phone and also since cash out of pocket is not required, it simply gets added to their phone bill. Teenagers represent the largest spectrum of these consumers, who are eager to show off the stunning features of their new phone to their peers. Parents typically pay the cost of their cell phone plans and typically are unaware of small charges made on the account. Most phone application downloads range from free demos to $9.99 pricing. As this venture is maintained via the internet and cell phone, little to no overhead is required. Most of the costs of goods sold are represented in the marketing of the product. The Pros And Cons Of Smoking Cessation Based on the combined data provided by two surveys suggest that cell phones and smartphones are not just a practical alternative tool suitable to be used in smoking cessation program. Mobile phones are freely accessible and thus can be a functional source that could provide those who want quite a discrete avenue to do so. The same can be said for the opposite as mobile phones can also provide a public forum for those who want to intervene and force someone they know to quit smoking cigarettes. Text Messaging As A Smoking Cessation Method Over the past decade, text messaging has become one of the most affordable and easily accessible form of communication. Along with the earlier mentioned growing number of young adults using tobacco products. These can go hand in hand due to the fact that text messaging can be used to promote healthy behavior to a huge amount of the U. S. population. Around 98% of the population has text messaging on their phones. thus a text based smoking cessation program can not only be cost effective, but can also provide interactive personalized counseling to a young college student. Text messaging smoking cessation programs can make this one–on–one counseling much easier since of the 70% of smokers that want to quit, only 51% actually meet with a physician to seek that type of help to attempt to quit. The Effect Of Text Messaging And Mobile Applications Abstract Background Healthy behavior during women's pregnancies is an important factor in preventing maternal mortality, maternal morbidity, premature birth, stillbirth, perinatal death, neonatal death and low birth weight. As in the rest of the world, mobile phone applications and text messaging are widely used in low– and middle–income countries (LMIC) in Asia that have major burdens of maternal deaths and preterm births. This type of communication has also been explored in interventions to improve health outcomes for a variety of conditions, and it seems plausible that it could help to increase healthy behavior in pregnant women. Language, for example, is affected by smartphones due to text messaging. A user's writing and speech can be changed because of the usage of abbreviated words and shortcuts. Specifically, text messaging impacts students in the classroom because it establishes a trend, enforces disorganized thoughts in written communication, and the use of word abbreviations and shortcuts are used in a daily basis. Text messaging creates a craze in a specific way of using communication in writing and in speech. It establishes lingos that should not be used in one's academic life. • 78. Writing For The Instant Messaging And Text Messaging... Another reason it is essential to place an emphasis on creative writing in the classroom is because of today's rapidly developing society. As the world has become so technologically advanced, there have become more and more ways for people to use written communication to express their thoughts. Where there was once snail mail and emails, now things have become as instantaneous as a text message or Tweet. Since people seem to write with such haste and almost carelessness today, it is important for students to be provided with slower paced writing exploration in the classroom. In "Writing for the Instant Messaging and Text Messaging Generation: Using New Literacies to Support Writing Instruction," Sheelah M. Sweeney states, "Teachers may be concerned about the way some students write [...] imagining the potential negative impact on their students' academic writing, but this interest can be an instructional advantage" (Sweeney, 2010, p. 121). While naturally there may be cause for concern with the way students can erroneously communicate so quickly through the written word, the unease teachers may have will actually be a good thing for students if these educators move forward with awareness instead of ignorance. Technology is one aspect of society that will not be regressing in the future, and the best way educators can adapt to this is by incorporating these advancements into the education of students in years to come. This article states that instead of shunning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
