Social Cognitive Model Of Teenage Suicide
In the United States, suicide is the third leading cause of death among persons between the ages of
10–24 [1]. In addition, a large percentage of adolescents consider committing suicide. The Centers
for Disease Control found that 16% of students in high schools nationwide reported seriously
considering suicide, while 8 percent reported trying to take their own life [1]. One of the difficulties
in addressing the issue of suicide is the stigma attached to it. People are unwilling to discuss it
publically. [1]
Suicide is complex and has many varied risked factors. Attempts are most common between the
ages of 16–18 [2]. Females are more likely to attempt and contemplate suicide, but males are more
likely to complete suicide attempts [2]. Native Americans suffer from the highest rates of suicide
[2]. Besides the secular characteristics of suicide, there are some ... Show more content on

The relationships between hopelessness, significant personal loss, and suicide ideation and attempt
can be viewed through the lens of the social cognitive theory of behavior. The social cognitive
theory explains human behavior by contextualizing the individual's characteristics, their
environment, and the behavior itself as a "dynamic, reciprocal model" [4]. In the context of the
social cognitive model, it is possible to understand how hopelessness, a serious sense of personal
loss, and suicidality can be seen as interrelated and reciprocal components of suicidal behavior. A
sense of hopelessness is a personal characteristic that an individual possesses. A severe sense of loss,
an environmental factor, may act as a catalyst for a sense of hopelessness. Finally, the ideation of
suicide or attempting suicide can both result from feelings of hopelessness and loss or may further
exacerbate the feelings of hopelessness and

Teenage Suicide On The Rise Essay
Teenage Suicide on the Rise:
In 2011, James Rodemeyer, a 14 year old junior high school student from Buffalo revealed his
bisexuality via the World Wide Web. The weeks following Rodemeyer experienced taunting, name
calling, assault and isolation from his peers. Even his close friends refused to sit with him at lunch.
Later that year, James Rodemeyer committed suicide. This case is just one of many where an
adolescent feels that their is no other solution than to end their life. It is estimated that, 42% of
LGBT of youth have experienced bullying, and they are two to three times more likely to attempt
suicide than other teens (BullyingStatistics.org, 2016).
It's very hard in this day and age to be young, and let alone to be young and identify as lesbian, gay,
bi or transgender. In Los Angeles County, researchers estimate that 70.6% of teens have seen
bullying occur in their schools, and 30% admit to doing it themselves (Juvonen, 2012). Whereas, in
Orange county between the years 2011–2013, there were 6.4 suicides for every 100,000 students due
to some type of bullying (Childtrends.org, 2015).
Regretfully, suicide is the leading cause of death among gay and lesbian youth, and 30% of gay
youth attempt suicide near the age of 15 (Speakforthem.org). It is estimated in 2010, the national
average suicide costs $1,164,499.00 and $44.6 billion a year in combined medical work loss costs.
This estimation factors in medical expenses, productivity loss corporate family that included

Erikson's Theory Of Teenage Suicide
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (2015). Approximately 5000 young people take their lives and 157,000
people are admitted to the hospital for self–injury each year (CDC, 2015). Major physical and
psychological changes occur during teenage years (Butler, 2010). They tend to have intense
emotions and unpredictable behavior at different times (Butler, 2010). Most importantly, adolescents
are searching for identity according to Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development (Butler,
2010). Adolescent's identity development is associated with their response towards family, peers,
and school, which shapes their own perceptions of belonging (Butler, 2010). ... Show more content

However, suicide can be prevented with early diagnosis, intervention, and treatment. Since suicide
ideators and attempters often experience hopelessness, maintaining positive relationships among
families, peers, and communities will enhance youth's health and well–being. Interventions such as
school–based suicide prevention program and family–oriented therapy may help adolescents
overcome their suicidal behavior and ideation. Nurses must know the signs and symptoms of

Preventing Teenage Suicide In The United States
Did you know that there are more deaths by suicide than homicide in the United States? There are
ninety–four people that die everyday from suicide, and another one million people attempt suicide in
the United States everyday ("Suicide in..."). In the 1980s and the 1990s, the amount of suicides were
heading in the right direction––they were decreasing. "It had been decreasing steadily since 1986,
and then what happened is there was a turnaround," says Sally Curtin (Bichell). In order to prevent
teenage suicide, individuals should be aware of the reasons why teenagers commit suicide as well as
how to identify the warning signs, and they should understand the affects of suicide on others and
how to cope with depression and stress.

First of all, people that tend to go through depression do not receive enough sleep or enough rest.
The amount of sleep that a person that is going through depression should sleep eight hours every
night. Also, people that go through depression do not really do anything much. Depressed people
can better cope if they pick up a hobby or sport they like to do. Participating in a hobby or sport may
help them stay connected with other people. Staying connected with people that make individuals
happy and make that individual laugh and smile makes a big difference in battling with depression
and an individual's outlook. In other words, for someone who is going through depression, social
support is a big factor in dealing with depression and stress (Smith). In particular, one way to
prevent depression is to meet with a group of friends and talk about what is happening in life, good
or bad, which may cause tears or laughter, but either way will help (Blumenstein 118). When all is
said and done, it is never too late to start a new friendship or improving relationships with friends
and family (Smith). In order to help teenagers through the depressing times, those around them need
to make sure they receive enough rest, and are involved in a hobby, and help them stay connected

Decrease Teenage Suicide
If I wanted to help decrease the rate of teenage suicide, I would interview suicide survivors and
people who had tried to commit suicide but didn't. I would interview them about what led them to
the decision that they wanted to commit suicide, but then ask about all the good things that have
happened to them since they decided not to or were not able to complete it. I would want them to
spend a lot of time describing their hardships and how they felt that the pain was inescapable and
how they felt like everyone might be better off without them, and then I would want them to spend a
longer time describing the happiness that they have experienced and all the little things that make
them happy now. For example, maybe one of the survivors talks

Teenage Suicide Is A Leading Cause Of Teen Suicide
A sixteen year old girl gave into all the things she struggled on. The depression. The anxiety. The
stress. One day she decided it was all too much for her, so she killed herself. Many teens around the
United States have committed suicide without thinking first. "According to the University of Texas,
75 percent of those who commit suicide are depressed. In teenagers, depression is considered a
leading cause of teen suicide. There are many factors that can cause depression in teenagers" ("Teen
Suicide Causes and Issues"). Teen suicide is mostly caused by depression. One reason teenage
suicide is mostly caused by depression is the symptoms. The changes in teen behaviors are
outrageous. They can go from happy to sad in a matter of a moment. This can be because of their
parent relationships or school related. The article "Teenage Suicide Causes and Issues" defines that
"Dramatic changes or problems at home can be a cause of teen suicide. Sometimes teenagers can't
handle the upheaval created by divorce. This can be a very depressing time for many teens.
Sometimes, teenagers may feel as though the divorce is in some way their fault. This can lead to
feelings of guilt and shame" (1). They could also be worried about their grades in school because
they are only getting worse. They may be pressured because they need college scholarships. But,
sometimes this can be normal to teens. According to "Teen Depression", another symptom of teen
depression is "hallucinations or unusual

The Third Leading Cause Of Teenage Suicide In The United...
When a young person starts to feel overwhelmingly hopeless, useless, alone, and unwanted many
turn to suicide. This can become very devastating to family, friends, and people who knew the
victim. Teenage suicide occurs due to many different factors. In today's society people uphold this
certain expectation of how someone should look like. And for those who don't follow these
standards or expectations one is seen as an outsider and worse they are seen as "ugly." According to
the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 15 to
19 years old and the number of adolescent deaths from suicide in the United States has increased
dramatically during the past few decades. Some of the leading causes for suicides among
adolescents is bullying, parents divorce, loneliness, and abuse. But doctors don't know the definitive
cause or explanation for why kids decide to take their own lives. Having time alone is great and can
help many people escape from everyone and everything around them but when young people spend
a long time alone it can also be harmful. Kids who struggle with emotional problems are more likely
to commit suicide, due to their mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teenagers experiencing such thoughts believe there is no future for them and have no way of being
able to imagine themselves having a positive future. Apathy eventually transforms into depression,
which eventually leads to suicidal thoughts. Friends play a vital role in a young person's life. Young
men and women growing up rarely develop the level of independence needed to confront life alone.
Teenagers without friends are far more likely to experience thoughts of suicide than those with a
strong support system. Someone who isn't independent needs a support system or they'll start feeling
lonely and abandoned. Not having any friends to lean on gives them the free time they need to
indulge in dark thoughts of

How Is Teenage Suicide Linked To Lack Of Sleep
I choose to write an essay on topic number two. Teenage suicide being linked to lack of sleep. The
article gave good stastics and made it easy for the reader to understand where they were coming
from. She used one study to help readers see and understand that there are links of lack of sleep and
teenage suicide. The writer of the Laura Zuckerman was particularly interested in a study done by
Maria Wong. Maria Wong was a psychology professor at Idaho state university. Wong partnered
with people whom she worked with at the University of Michigan.
The article caught my attention because of my prior learning experiences and prior working
experiences. It caught my attention in regards of remembering what it was like for myself to be a
teenager. I do remember several of my friends who were not sleeping well and having nightmares of
themselves being attacked or being severely hurt. So, to now know that people are finding links that
could prove to help teens from hurting themselves. It always amazes me when I get to put what I
read to real life experiences. Overall I felt the article hit home on a various number of things. Such
as what pushes teens to commit suicide. This could be the beginning of saving more teens. ... Show

I would go more in depth on the study itself. I would do this so that I was hitting on the important
information that is needed. For the most people skim things they are reading. So, by hitting the
important parts the writer can get information that would be helpful in stopping or bring down the
number of teenage suicide. In America, we feel we are short on time so we do really want to go deep
into an article even if were interested. So, I felt the writer needed to have a really attention getting

Problems At Home Many teens always consider suicide when they have trouble at home. Whether
it's because of parents splitting up, grades dropping, or even feeling accepted, teens have a very hard
time dealing. Divorce is usually the main cause of problems in the household. Some teens blame
themselves and think it's their fault their parents didn't stay together. It's always the same. If a teen's
grade drops, one might be scolded, and feel worthless. Acceptance is another big factor. Many teens
that decide they are homosexual might be afraid of being accepted by

Teenage Suicide Is Becoming Increasingly More Common
A young person dying for any reason is a tragedy, so when a teenager takes his or her own life due
to frustrations, hopelessness, or loss of self–worth, it is completely devastating. Young people today
are having to grow up in a world with high stress levels, confusion, discouragement, and pain;
sometimes it is just too hard for them to handle. Perhaps it is not surprising that teenage suicide is
becoming increasingly more common. Suicide has become the third leading causing of death in
adolescents today. All around the world teenagers are attempting to take, or successfully taking,
their own lives for many reasons, including forms of content on the Internet. A story published in
The Ledger written by Stephanie Allie demonstrates how this, unfortunately, happened to be true for
12 year old, Rebecca Sedwick. On the morning of September 9th, 2013, instead of getting on the
school bus, Rebecca walked to an abandoned cement plant. The 12 year old climbed to the top of a
silo and jumped off, killing herself instantly. Later, Rebecca's mother, Traci, told police that her
daughter had been bullied by a group of middle school girls. Further investigation showed that for
over a year, Rebecca received hateful text messages and Facebook posts from these girls, harassing,
taunting, and humiliating her. Some of the messages went as far as telling Rebecca to endure bodily
harm, and that she did not deserve to live. The girls treated Rebecca horribly all because she started

disturbing is that suicide among a young people nation wide have increased dramatically in recent
years. In fact thousands of teenagers each year commit suicide. It is the third leading cause of death
among young adults aged 15–24. With the first two leading causes being unintentional injury and
homicide. There are many reasons why teenagers feel the need to take their own life. They are at a

Violence in the home itself is worse. The home to adolescents is a place of comfort, if something is
wrong at school, then home is where they can forget about it. But if there is violence occurring at the
home, then children will not want to go there. This is the start of the buildup of pressure. Teenagers
feel the pressure of maintaining good grades during school. If the adolescent is doing poorly in
school, then he or she will feel the pressure to succeed and to do better in school work.
Stress is a basis for most of the problems teenagers will encounter during high school and college.
School work can be overwhelming especially for young adults. Schools are now issuing more
assignments than usual to prepare students for the real world. Some teachers and Professors,
however, do not realize the extremity of some of these assignments and projects. Most students,
especially highschool students, have a full schedule. These students are in school from about eight in
the morning to three in the afternoon. College can be just as bad. Even though most of the students
are now in class for about a third of the time, the school work is probably more than doubled to that
of a high school student. Many problems begin to occur at this stage in the life of the student. Since
the pressure is on more then ever, many adolescents take comfort in the company of their friends.
Friends during this time are extremely crucial for many reasons. The best being that

One major sign of a suicidal teen is a change in habits (Suicide 1). Each summer that Lucy returns to
camp she has a new hobby. Lois thinks of these changes exciting but in reality, Lucy cannot find
anything to make her happy. Another indicator of suicide is more or less sleeping (Schleiter 42).
Lois comments on the fact that Lucy is harder to wake up in the mornings. She is also quieter and
more pensive. Another indicator is a high stress level; teens who commit suicide are often
overwhelmed by stress from the beginning. A "trigger" event then becomes the final catalyst
(Frankel 34). In Lucy's case this trigger event could very well be the divorce of her parents. Lucy
says she does not like her new stepfather and her father has also remarried. She mentions running
away from home. Another possible trigger is the move away from home. Research shows that
depression seems to mark teens who have recently moved away. They are more or less uprooted
from the place where they have grown up and started their own lives.
There are myths surrounding suicide, such as, people take their own lives on gloomy days (Frankel
38). In reality, people suffering from depression feel worse on sunny days because the people around
them seem to be more cheerful. Lucy jumps of the cliff on a beautiful summer day. She is on the
much anticipated canoe trip but none of that seems to matter. Another myth is when people mention
suicide it is for attention (Frankel 38). Lucy

The Cause Of Teenage Suicides
Have you ever wondered what the cause of most teenage suicides was? Most social mediums on the
internet can be a major cause of depression fits, and our perception of depression is clouded by how
people use the word so often. Another major cause could be seeing people with "perfect bodies", and
wanting to imitate that, causing eating disorders. Most importantly, our view on how we are
supposed to act around others is blinded by the videos, movies, and shows we view. Overall, many
American teenagers are physically, socially, and emotionally affected by smartphone technology
leading to depression, anxiety, and others. Although new technology is great, it still can have a
negative, physical effect on teenagers. Smartphones are not the thing kids are doing to themselves,
but it is what is making them physically hurt themselves. People that see models compare
themselves to them and the odds are that you aren't as skinny as they. Teens see this and think that
they need to lose weight so some develop eating disorders. Some teenagers take it to the next level
and kill themselves. We need to find some ways to stop this. For instance, maybe the models come
out and explain the sacrifices it takes to have a body like them. That could help the kids that, look at
that as a reason to harm themselves. Another idea is maybe parents restrict what they do on their
phones and they monitor it. In addition, if people cyberbully, that causes kids to physically harm
themselves. When parents

Speech On Teenage Suicide
It is heartbreaking news that teenage suicides are on the rise. With the kind of stress today's
youngsters undergo in a fast paced and ever changing environment, it is not surprising that they
succumb to the pressure and become self destructive. The astonishing fact is that most of the
suicides occur in educated and affluent families. Why do these youngsters who are blessed with
comfortable homes, well to do parents, access to the best schools and colleges in town and a
promise of better things to come, end their lives? It definitely cannot be material insecurity. They
already have enough opulence, but unfortunately the lavish life they lead offers no challenges. They
are deprived of the need to go out and fight for things. More adolescents die of suicide than AIDS,
cancer, heart disease, obesity, birth defects and lung disease. The medical journal named Lancet

Risk Factors of Teenage Suicide
Teenage suicide is a major national public health concern facing America today. Thousands of
teenagers commit suicide each year. Many experts believe that teenage suicide is often due to
unpredictable circumstances and can be contributed to hormonal impulses. However, recent case
findings and statistics prove that this is not necessarily true. Although some teenage suicides may be
the result of youthful and impulsive actions, certain risk factors, signs, and symptoms can contribute
to self–inflicted death in adolescents. For instance, the gender of a teenager plays a role in their
overall risk of self–inflicted death. A recent study shows the suicide rates of teenage boys as being
fifty–seven out of a million, but the teenage girl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cleaning their room and giving away belongings is also a common sign of thoughts of suicide in
youth (2).
Teenagers under large amounts of stress are also prone to suicidal behavior. Personal life events
involving conflict in relationships or traumatic loss often lead to suicidal thoughts. The feelings that
teenagers experience during the time of the separation and divorce of their parents can be
overwhelming, and break–ups and other relationship losses can be devastating to teens as well.
Adolescents are often incapable of coping with setbacks such as failing a grade, dropping out of
school, or being suspended from school. Even something as simple as having to relocate can be
overwhelming for some youth (Cornette 4).
Victims of child abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, often feel shame and guilt
associated with these experiences. These emotions can also increase the likelihood of suicidal
ideation. Many victims of ill–treatment feel that they are worthless or perceive themselves to be
failures which lead to feelings of hopelessness and suicidal tendencies. Some researchers even
suggest that feelings of hopelessness rather than depression are a better indicator of a potential
suicide involving a teenager. Feeling hopeless, therefore, is an important risk factor when dealing
with teenage suicide (Cornette 3).
Teenagers who become alcohol dependent are at an increased risk of premature death. Many teens
who have committed

boy drove to a spot in North Carolina where his dad had committed suicide just a few years ago. In
that same exact place where his dad committed suicide, he decided to take his own life. According
to World Suicide Facts' statement of years 1991–1993, the United States recorded 2,190,000 men
and 380,000 women committed suicide varying in ages from 15 to 24 (Crook 17). No one wants to
hear that an adolescent has made a reckless decision to end his or her life. People need to become
aware of what is going on around them in order to help these young, confused, individuals. In
today's society, teenage suicide is on the rise with contributing factors like family dynamics, social
media, firearms, and abuse of drugs and alcohol. People need to be aware of teenage suicide, and
learn to be proactive in this struggle over life and death since it is occurring more and more every
day. Family dynamics are said to be a major cause of increasing teenage suicide rates. Adolescents
look up to their parents in numerous ways. Parents are the people teenagers turn to for their state of
emotional well–being. Young adults ten to be emotionally fragile and need a strong parental
foundation to rely upon.

Teenage Suicide : A Challenging Period Of Life
Adolescence is a challenging period of life, when individuals undergo major physical and
psychological changes between the ages of 10 and 19. This period is accompanied by many needs,
all of which contribute to increased risk–taking in youth, such as suicidal behaviors. Suicide is the
third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24 in the United States (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014). Among this same age group, suicide accounts for
20% of all deaths annually. In a 2011 nationally representative sample of high school students,
15.8% of students reported that they had seriously considered attempting suicide during the last
year, 12.8% reported that they made a plan about how they would attempt suicide, 7.8% reported
that they had attempted suicide at least once, and 2.4% of students reported that they made a suicide
attempt that required medical attention (CDC, 2012a). For every completed suicide among youth
between the ages of 15 and 24, there are about 100–200 suicide attempts (Goldsmith et al., 2002).
Suicide among adolescents also contributes to social and economic burden through a loss of
productivity. Specifically, Yang and Lester (2007) estimated the costs of each youth between the
ages of 15 and 24 who completed suicide as $1,022,950 from lost lifetime earnings in 2005. The
CDC (2012b) Cost of Injury Module indicates that, in 2005, death by suicide for youth ages 10–19
resulted in approximately $8,482,000 in medical costs

Teenage Suicide Is A Big Problem
What started as a missing person, ended in tragedy.
At the beginning of my freshman year at Hanover High, a student named John Smith*,(he was a
year older than me) was missing. I knew who he was because his mom used to work with me in the
learning center at Marion Cross, the elementary school in Norwich. He went missing sometime in
October. Weeks went by, then months and then finally they found him. When they found him it was
early March so the snow had melted and he was hanging from a tree in his backyard. When I came
to school that day you could hear people talking about it.
Teen suicide is a BIG problem. "Adolescent suicide continues to be a major cause of death of our
youth. The National Center for Health Statistics (1996) has found suicide to be the 3rd leading cause
of death for 15–24 year olds, behind only accidents and homicide and the tenth leading cause of
death in children under the age of fifteen (Ellis & Lane, qtd in "Do Increasing Adolescent". As stated
by these facts, even though they are out of date, suicide is on the rise. Suicide is an important topic
in my life; I lost a great uncle to suicide when I was little. He had COPD and didn't want to go
through the suffering that comes with that particular disease. It was tragic when my 80 year old
great uncle committed suicide but it seems more tragic when teens at the beginning of their life
commit suicide. In his article called "Teens Are Particularly at Risk for Suicide", Michael Jellinek,

Teenage Suicide : The Breaking Point
Teenage Suicide: The Breaking Point The majority of society knows a loved one suffering from
depression, identity crisis, or low self–esteem. Self–injury and suicide have become a large topic of
discussion in today's world. In order to comprehend the factors that contribute to the act of self–
inflicted death, one must understand the history, victim profile, forms of suicide, causes, symptoms
and signs, and prevention. Understanding this information can help individuals understand a loved
one's struggle with suicide, as well as spread knowledge to others dealing with depressive thoughts.
Media, technology, and entertainment have rapidly progressed in our world, which has established a
new self–image. Social media has indirectly generated a new standard of life everywhere
advertisements allow, while celebrities set the bar for body image. As people are confronted with,
and compare themselves to this new standard, their self–image becomes distorted and their self–
esteem begins to diminish. The causes of self–inflicting death seem to be quite broad, yet are mainly
centered around the mood disorders such as depression. Although detecting this mental disorder is
sometimes difficult, there are symptoms such as withdrawal, change of mood, feelings of
helplessness, loss of interest or suicide, that indicate its presence.
History of Suicide There are two forms of suicide. The first type is individual suicide in which a
person takes his or her life for personal reasons. These

Over the past few years' teenage depression has drastically increased due to multiple factors such as
peer pressure and bullying. According to Linda Lamb's article Young People Can Suffer From

from the Health and Human Services Department and National Institute of Mental Health stated," in
the last 25 years, the rate of suicide among teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically."

Linda Lamb's article stated that certain situations can cause depression such as," stress or division in

Along with these events, teenagers go through "body changes, changes in thoughts, and changes in

A lot of people don't understand why teenage depression is more serious than adult depression.
According to Newsweek," depressed teenagers are more reactive to the environment than depressed
adults. In addition, they act irritable." With this, parents usually should not deal with their kid's
depression alone. Most of the time, the teenager will blame the parents if not get irritated with them.

Teens Suicide : The Consequences Of Teenage Suicide
"I don't know why everyone hates me so much, maybe I do because now I hate me to." Suicide
among teenagers is an important issue faced today and is something that should not be ignored.
Before a teenager commits suicide, often, they do not think about the consequences or how it will
affect the wider community. Why would a teenager take there own life? What could make them
want to see it as the only option? Often there are a number of contributing factors to a teenagers
suicide many of which they don't tell anyone. Many people do not know how to help someone
feeling like this and will simply ignore the issue; however this is not the right thing to do.
Many teenagers do not think about the consequences of their actions on a community after they kill
themselves. They think even if they do commit suicide nobody would care about them anyway so it
won't affect anyone or it won't matter. Many suicidal people think things like, "they say every life
(is) precious but nobody care about mine." Sometimes when people think this way their mind is shut
to others opinions including believing people care for them. In the movie cyberbully, the main
character Taylor tries to kill herself however fails in her attempt. After this happens the amount of
support by family, friends and also people from the hospital, counsellors and people from support
groups she attends, shows what effect it would have had on the community and the people around
her if she did kill herself. At the end of the movie Taylor stands up to her bully and people around
her stand with her as they have also been bullied. She does this because she doesn't want anyone
else to go through what she has been through and it works as the bully stops bullying people. Many
teenagers do not think about what will happen to the people left once they are dead.
Many wonder why a young person would take there life as they have so much life still ahead of
them. There are many driving forces that cause a teenager to feel this way about life. Teenagers with
a mental illness, such as depression and anxiety, are at a higher risk of suicide as well as people with
drug or alcohol abuse problems. Teenagers also often feel as if they are the only one facing

Teenage Suicide
Suicide is intentional self–inflicted acts that end in death("Suicide,"
Compton's). After a series of traumatic events, normal coping abilities can be pushed over the edge;
the result may be suicide. In each year, an average of
30,000 suicide deaths occur in the United States. It is estimated that 5,000 of those suicides are
committed by teenagers(SAVE, 2). One major reason that the suicide rate among teenagers is so
high, is that the teenage years are a period of commotion. New social roles are being learned, new
relationships are being developed, bodily changes are occurring, and decisions about the future are
being made during the teenage years. Teenagers tend to commit suicide after large changes, ... Show

The statistics of considered and completed suicide are shocking.
Ten percent of teenage boys admit that they have attempted suicide. Girls in their teens have a much
higher percentage(eighteen percent), which will admit that they unsuccessfully tried to commit
suicide. A teenager in 1990 was twice as likely to die from suicide than a teenager growing up in
1960. One of the most startling teenage suicide facts is that since 1961, there has been a tripling of
completed teenage suicide("The Real World [Suicide: Facts]," 1–3). When a teenager is able to
successfully commit suicide, they leave behind family and friends. In a normal death situation,
people usually feel grief. When a teenager performs suicide, family and friends left behind
experience many feelings. A feeling of confusion and great distress over unresolved issues is very
common. Family members and friends often feel anger and resentment after a suicide. These
emotions can cause friends and family to become very isolated feeling. A friend or family member
may find that it is difficult to relate to other people after a suicide. These people may decide that
other people view them as a failure because they were unable to stop someone close to them from
committing suicide. A fear of forming new relationships after a person has completed suicide is
common. People feel that by creating new relationships, they might be hurt and experience the same
pain they are going through. In order to

These conditions may even go unnoticed as peers and family members may think "Oh, he or she is
so happy all of the time, there is no way they are struggling with anything". If not given proper help
for these conditions, a teen may end their life in an attempt to get rid of everything going on inside
of their mind.
However, adults have speculated that when teenagers or youth in general seek help for a mental
illness and then therefore receive antidepressants or a similar drug to take, the medication is what
actually causes the suicide attempt. On any antidepressant, there is a warning on the label that states
"May cause suicidal thoughts" (Bichell). There are many different types of medication under the
antidepressant category, and I speak from experience when I say that one type of antidepressant
medication may affect you differently than another person. A doctor may speak with the recipient of
the medication and warn them to notify someone close to them that they are on the medication to
watch for changes in activity, personality, etc. that show signs of possible suicidal activity. Through
monitoring and the person on the medication making their thoughts know, this risk of suicide from
anti–depressants or other medication should disperse. A major component of keeping control of

January 6 2015 The factors and effects of teenage suicide as the result of bullying
There has been an unfortunate increase in the news about teenagers killing themselves as a result of
being bullied. With the increase of social media bullying is now easier and faster to do. Even if
someone doesn't live in the same area as their bully they can still be bullied and taunted. One of the
reasons why teenage suicide has gone up with the increase of social media use is because bullying is
not as hard to track because someone can delete their harmful comments like they never happened.
Instead of posting on a public forum like their "wall" a bully can send them a private message and
later delete it when questioned about it. Since the internet is a newer invention there aren't as many
regulations on it which means people who bully others on the internet can hide away behind their
computers and get away with the hateful comments they posted. It would take a long time to figure
out how to deal with the hateful comments that appear. Most Social media sites include features
such as reporting a post or person, blocking, or just removing that person from your "friend" group.

this study are as follow: Cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogens, heroin,
inhalants, methamphetamines, and steroids. Individuals who used heroin at least once within the
past twelve months reported that 46.2% of them attempted suicide at least one. This group was
compared to a group that had not used heroin. In the non–heroin group, 6.7% of the individuals
attempted suicide within the past twelve months. Compared to the other nine substances, heroin was
shown to have the highest odds of a user attempting suicide, having suicide ideation, or completing
a suicide plan within the past twelve months. Next, alcohol use had a considerable association with
suicide ideation and plans but not suicide attempts. Other risk factors such as feelings of
hopelessness, fasting for weight loss, vomiting or laxative for weight loss, and sexual intercourse
were also considered along side substance use and abuse. Depression, or feelings of hopelessness,

Teenage Suicide
Adolescence is a stage where the youth face various issues. For instance, their bodies are changing
rapidly, and they have an urgent desire to explore. Teenage experiences differ across individuals
whereby some enjoy admiration while others feel rejected. The adverse behaviors result in
significant concerns among the adolescents as some commit suicide while others just consider it.
Crepeau–Hobson states that suicide has been listed as the third cause of death among youths
between the ages of 10–24 (810). He further adds that a large percentage of the adolescents have
also been reported to have contemplated or attempted to take their own lives. In the United States,
addressing the issue of suicide has been made an urgent priority by the national government because
besides it raising the mortality rate in the country, it contributes to increased hospitalization (Pena et
al. 29). Teenage suicide should be prevented by substance abuse treatment and violence prevention,
parental involvement, and implementation of suicide risk assessment procedures in educational
institutions.
One of the common behaviors among the adolescents is their desire to try out new things. The
young adults who are already involved in drug abuse mislead the young generation that such
practices are considered cool. The innocent children end up indulging in various substances such as
alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and with time they graduate to hard drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Teenage Suicide : The Cause And Causes Of Teen Suicide
As we all know, teenage suicide is a major and still a growing health concern within the united
states of America. "It is the leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24, surpassed only by
accidents, according to the U.S. Center for disease control prevention" (American Psychological
Association). Andover mentions that, in the united states, suicide not only does it affect adolescents,
but it is the 17th leading cause of death for children between the ages of 5 to 9 years and in
adolescents/young adults it is the 3rd leading cause of death (1). Now, if view it from an enhanced
perspective, in the year 2008, "30,000 people in the United States and approximately 1 million
people worldwide die by suicide" (Nock 133). What is it exactly that is affecting these adolescents
to have to end their lives at such a high rate? What are we not doing correctly? What needs to be
improved? We do not just automatically think of suicide and it just ensues, but there are actual
causes of why teens become suicidal. According to the American Psychological Association, the
main causes of suicidal distress involve all of the above: psychological, environmental, and social
factors. Some examples involve, interpersonal losses, family violence, victim of bullying,
physical/sexual abuse, sexual orientation confusion, and disciplinary problems. Other factors
include depressive symptoms, more stressful life events, exposure to suicide attempt, suicidal
ideation, anxious symptoms, substance use, major depressive disorder (MDD), post–traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), and fewer family relationships (Andover 4). Plus, with the risk factors we must be
aware of the warning signs and with any adolescent it may seem that there may be nothing wrong
with them, but honestly there could be. Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a very popular suicide

sleeping to little or too much, extreme mood swings, increasing use of alcohol/drugs, talking about
hopelessness/having no reason to live, talking about being a burden to others, withdrawing/isolating

Unfortunately, people and the news do not pay as much attention to teen suicide in comparison to

past three years; each week twenty–eight teens kill themselves in America. Nearly one in seven
teens have said they have had suicidal thoughts or tendencies and one in fourteen admit to actually

There is a lot of stress, rumors, relationships, negativity, fears, hormones, and depression flowing

High lost four students by suicide in the past years, a series of tragedies which caused a lot of
uncomfortableness around students. One student, Jeff Nelson, gave no obvious warning signs or

Violent behavior and suicide may be directly related to altered brain chemistry according to Marie
Asberg, a Swedish psychiatrist. She has found that there are lower levels of the cerebrospinal
chemical 5–HIAA in suicidal subjects, when compared to "normal" subjects. This chemical is a by
product of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, which may regulate mood and aggression (Long
25). According to Dr. Michael
Stanley, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, "the serotonin data [is] the most
potentially promising development in the suicide prevention field." According to Stanley, it may be
possible to test whether or not a person may be suicidal (qtd. in
Long 25).
Some say that the incrteased rate of completed suicicdes may be atributed to the use of more leathal
means during attempts.
Another major factor that relates to adolescent suicide is the use of drugs and alcohol. Experts
estimated that an amazing three out of four youths that commit suicide have abused drugs at one
time or another. Alcohol has also been found in the blood of at least half of all adolescents at the
time of there suicide (Long 23). There are many reasons why drugs and alcohol create a higher risk
of suicide. For example, first, drugs are commonly used as an escape; they help in coping with stress

"A dark brooding cloud was slowly casting a shadow across my mind." "I felt weighed down,
oppressed by the burden of having to face a new day." "A crushing sense of hopelessness that was
unlike anything I had ever experienced before" "It was as if something else had seized control of my
mind." "The darkness was spreading inside me like a cancer." – These descriptions are how Cait
Irwin, who suffered from depression as a teenager, described it. Teenage depression is a common
but serious illness that can ultimately send some on a downward spiral towards suicide that can be
averted if recognized and given the proper treatment. Countless teenagers experience some type of
depression in their lifetime, but what exactly is depression and just ... Show more content on

Two main types of psychotherapies–cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy
(IPT)–are effective in treating depression. The goal of CBT is to change habitual patterns of thinking
and acting that may be contributing to a person's problems. In IPT, a person learns to help identify
the problem that triggered a bout of depression, then learns the necessary social and communication
skills to resolve that problem successfully. While both medication and psychotherapy are proved to
help depression, a combination of the two appears to be the best method. In a recent study of 439
depressed adolescents, 71% improved by the combination treatment of medication and
psychotherapy, better than the 61% who responded to medication alone and 43% for psychotherapy
alone. (Irwin, Evans, and Wasmer 80). Somehow or other, treatment for depression seems to work at
least partly by correcting imbalances in brain chemicals. However, many people with a depressive
disorder never seek treatment even though the majority, even those with the most severe depression,
can get better with treatment ("National Institute of Mental Health"). According to the NDSUH,
only 34.7% of teens who had major depression this past year received treatment. This means nearly
2/3 of the teens who had major depression did not receive any treatment ("Major Depressive
Episode and Treatment Among Adolescents: 2009"). It is crucial that teens suffering from
depression receive treatment before they

Social Cognitive Model Of Teenage Suicide

  • 1. Social Cognitive Model Of Teenage Suicide In the United States, suicide is the third leading cause of death among persons between the ages of 10–24 [1]. In addition, a large percentage of adolescents consider committing suicide. The Centers for Disease Control found that 16% of students in high schools nationwide reported seriously considering suicide, while 8 percent reported trying to take their own life [1]. One of the difficulties in addressing the issue of suicide is the stigma attached to it. People are unwilling to discuss it publically. [1] Suicide is complex and has many varied risked factors. Attempts are most common between the ages of 16–18 [2]. Females are more likely to attempt and contemplate suicide, but males are more likely to complete suicide attempts [2]. Native Americans suffer from the highest rates of suicide [2]. Besides the secular characteristics of suicide, there are some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The relationships between hopelessness, significant personal loss, and suicide ideation and attempt can be viewed through the lens of the social cognitive theory of behavior. The social cognitive theory explains human behavior by contextualizing the individual's characteristics, their environment, and the behavior itself as a "dynamic, reciprocal model" [4]. In the context of the social cognitive model, it is possible to understand how hopelessness, a serious sense of personal loss, and suicidality can be seen as interrelated and reciprocal components of suicidal behavior. A sense of hopelessness is a personal characteristic that an individual possesses. A severe sense of loss, an environmental factor, may act as a catalyst for a sense of hopelessness. Finally, the ideation of suicide or attempting suicide can both result from feelings of hopelessness and loss or may further exacerbate the feelings of hopelessness and ... • 3. Teenage Suicide On The Rise Essay Teenage Suicide on the Rise: In 2011, James Rodemeyer, a 14 year old junior high school student from Buffalo revealed his bisexuality via the World Wide Web. The weeks following Rodemeyer experienced taunting, name calling, assault and isolation from his peers. Even his close friends refused to sit with him at lunch. Later that year, James Rodemeyer committed suicide. This case is just one of many where an adolescent feels that their is no other solution than to end their life. It is estimated that, 42% of LGBT of youth have experienced bullying, and they are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide than other teens (BullyingStatistics.org, 2016). It's very hard in this day and age to be young, and let alone to be young and identify as lesbian, gay, bi or transgender. In Los Angeles County, researchers estimate that 70.6% of teens have seen bullying occur in their schools, and 30% admit to doing it themselves (Juvonen, 2012). Whereas, in Orange county between the years 2011–2013, there were 6.4 suicides for every 100,000 students due to some type of bullying (Childtrends.org, 2015). Regretfully, suicide is the leading cause of death among gay and lesbian youth, and 30% of gay youth attempt suicide near the age of 15 (Speakforthem.org). It is estimated in 2010, the national average suicide costs $1,164,499.00 and $44.6 billion a year in combined medical work loss costs. • 5. Erikson's Theory Of Teenage Suicide Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015). Approximately 5000 young people take their lives and 157,000 people are admitted to the hospital for self–injury each year (CDC, 2015). Major physical and psychological changes occur during teenage years (Butler, 2010). They tend to have intense emotions and unpredictable behavior at different times (Butler, 2010). Most importantly, adolescents are searching for identity according to Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development (Butler, 2010). Adolescent's identity development is associated with their response towards family, peers, and school, which shapes their own perceptions of belonging (Butler, 2010). ... Since suicide ideators and attempters often experience hopelessness, maintaining positive relationships among families, peers, and communities will enhance youth's health and well–being. There are ninety–four people that die everyday from suicide, and another one million people attempt suicide in the United States everyday ("Suicide in..."). In the 1980s and the 1990s, the amount of suicides were heading in the right direction––they were decreasing. "It had been decreasing steadily since 1986, and then what happened is there was a turnaround," says Sally Curtin (Bichell). In order to prevent teenage suicide, individuals should be aware of the reasons why teenagers commit suicide as well as how to identify the warning signs, and they should understand the affects of suicide on others and how to cope with depression and stress. The amount of sleep that a person that is going through depression should sleep eight hours every night. Also, people that go through depression do not really do anything much. Depressed people can better cope if they pick up a hobby or sport they like to do. Participating in a hobby or sport may help them stay connected with other people. Staying connected with people that make individuals happy and make that individual laugh and smile makes a big difference in battling with depression and an individual's outlook. In other words, for someone who is going through depression, social support is a big factor in dealing with depression and stress (Smith). In particular, one way to prevent depression is to meet with a group of friends and talk about what is happening in life, good or bad, which may cause tears or laughter, but either way will help (Blumenstein 118). When all is said and done, it is never too late to start a new friendship or improving relationships with friends and family (Smith). I would interview them about what led them to the decision that they wanted to commit suicide, but then ask about all the good things that have happened to them since they decided not to or were not able to complete it. I would want them to spend a lot of time describing their hardships and how they felt that the pain was inescapable and how they felt like everyone might be better off without them, and then I would want them to spend a longer time describing the happiness that they have experienced and all the little things that make them happy now. • 11. Teenage Suicide Is A Leading Cause Of Teen Suicide A sixteen year old girl gave into all the things she struggled on. The depression. The anxiety. The stress. One day she decided it was all too much for her, so she killed herself. Many teens around the United States have committed suicide without thinking first. "According to the University of Texas, 75 percent of those who commit suicide are depressed. In teenagers, depression is considered a leading cause of teen suicide. There are many factors that can cause depression in teenagers" ("Teen Suicide Causes and Issues"). Teen suicide is mostly caused by depression. One reason teenage suicide is mostly caused by depression is the symptoms. The changes in teen behaviors are outrageous. They can go from happy to sad in a matter of a moment. This can be because of their parent relationships or school related. The article "Teenage Suicide Causes and Issues" defines that "Dramatic changes or problems at home can be a cause of teen suicide. Sometimes teenagers can't handle the upheaval created by divorce. This can be a very depressing time for many teens. Sometimes, teenagers may feel as though the divorce is in some way their fault. This can lead to feelings of guilt and shame" (1). They could also be worried about their grades in school because they are only getting worse. They may be pressured because they need college scholarships. But, sometimes this can be normal to teens. • 13. The Third Leading Cause Of Teenage Suicide In The United... When a young person starts to feel overwhelmingly hopeless, useless, alone, and unwanted many turn to suicide. This can become very devastating to family, friends, and people who knew the victim. Teenage suicide occurs due to many different factors. In today's society people uphold this certain expectation of how someone should look like. And for those who don't follow these standards or expectations one is seen as an outsider and worse they are seen as "ugly." According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 15 to 19 years old and the number of adolescent deaths from suicide in the United States has increased dramatically during the past few decades. Some of the leading causes for suicides among adolescents is bullying, parents divorce, loneliness, and abuse. But doctors don't know the definitive cause or explanation for why kids decide to take their own lives. Teenagers without friends are far more likely to experience thoughts of suicide than those with a strong support system. The article gave good stastics and made it easy for the reader to understand where they were coming from. She used one study to help readers see and understand that there are links of lack of sleep and teenage suicide. The writer of the Laura Zuckerman was particularly interested in a study done by Maria Wong. Maria Wong was a psychology professor at Idaho state university. Wong partnered with people whom she worked with at the University of Michigan. The article caught my attention because of my prior learning experiences and prior working experiences. It caught my attention in regards of remembering what it was like for myself to be a teenager. I do remember several of my friends who were not sleeping well and having nightmares of themselves being attacked or being severely hurt. So, to now know that people are finding links that could prove to help teens from hurting themselves. It always amazes me when I get to put what I read to real life experiences. In this paper we will analyze how lack of communication, depression, and undesirable life events or recent losses answers why teen suicides are a national issue. • 62. The Factors And Effects Of Teenage Suicide Alexis Kinson Mrs. Laframboise Contemporary fiction January 6 2015 The factors and effects of teenage suicide as the result of bullying There has been an unfortunate increase in the news about teenagers killing themselves as a result of being bullied. With the increase of social media bullying is now easier and faster to do. Even if someone doesn't live in the same area as their bully they can still be bullied and taunted. One of the reasons why teenage suicide has gone up with the increase of social media use is because bullying is not as hard to track because someone can delete their harmful comments like they never happened. Instead of posting on a public forum like their "wall" a bully can send them a private message and later delete it when questioned about it. Since the internet is a newer invention there aren't as many regulations on it which means people who bully others on the internet can hide away behind their computers and get away with the hateful comments they posted. It would take a long time to figure out how to deal with the hateful comments that appear. Most Social media sites include features such as reporting a post or person, blocking, or just removing that person from your "friend" group. Because of the first amendment harsh words are seen as freedom of speech and are allowed to be said and written. However there is a bold line between freedom of speech and slander which is not protected under certain circumstances. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First, Wong raises the question of how the association of substance abuse and suicide differs across different types and number of substances used. The substances considered for this study are as follow: Cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogens, heroin, inhalants, methamphetamines, and steroids. Individuals who used heroin at least once within the past twelve months reported that 46.2% of them attempted suicide at least one. This group was compared to a group that had not used heroin. In the non–heroin group, 6.7% of the individuals attempted suicide within the past twelve months. Compared to the other nine substances, heroin was shown to have the highest odds of a user attempting suicide, having suicide ideation, or completing a suicide plan within the past twelve months. Next, alcohol use had a considerable association with suicide ideation and plans but not suicide attempts. Other risk factors such as feelings of hopelessness, fasting for weight loss, vomiting or laxative for weight loss, and sexual intercourse were also considered along side substance use and abuse. • 68. Teenage Suicide Teenage Suicide Adolescence is a stage where the youth face various issues. For instance, their bodies are changing rapidly, and they have an urgent desire to explore. Teenage experiences differ across individuals whereby some enjoy admiration while others feel rejected. The adverse behaviors result in significant concerns among the adolescents as some commit suicide while others just consider it. Crepeau–Hobson states that suicide has been listed as the third cause of death among youths between the ages of 10–24 (810). He further adds that a large percentage of the adolescents have also been reported to have contemplated or attempted to take their own lives. In the United States, addressing the issue of suicide has been made an urgent priority by the national government because besides it raising the mortality rate in the country, it contributes to increased hospitalization (Pena et al. 29). Teenage suicide should be prevented by substance abuse treatment and violence prevention, parental involvement, and implementation of suicide risk assessment procedures in educational institutions. One of the common behaviors among the adolescents is their desire to try out new things. The young adults who are already involved in drug abuse mislead the young generation that such practices are considered cool. The innocent children end up indulging in various substances such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and with time they graduate to hard drugs like heroin and cocaine. According to ... • 70. Teenage Suicide : The Cause And Causes Of Teen Suicide As we all know, teenage suicide is a major and still a growing health concern within the united states of America. "It is the leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24, surpassed only by accidents, according to the U.S. Center for disease control prevention" (American Psychological Association). Andover mentions that, in the united states, suicide not only does it affect adolescents, but it is the 17th leading cause of death for children between the ages of 5 to 9 years and in adolescents/young adults it is the 3rd leading cause of death (1). Now, if view it from an enhanced perspective, in the year 2008, "30,000 people in the United States and approximately 1 million people worldwide die by suicide" (Nock 133). What is it exactly that is affecting these adolescents to have to end their lives at such a high rate? What are we not doing correctly? What needs to be improved? We do not just automatically think of suicide and it just ensues, but there are actual causes of why teens become suicidal. According to the American Psychological Association, the main causes of suicidal distress involve all of the above: psychological, environmental, and social factors. Some examples involve, interpersonal losses, family violence, victim of bullying, physical/sexual abuse, sexual orientation confusion, and disciplinary problems. Other factors include depressive symptoms, more stressful life events, exposure to suicide attempt, suicidal ideation, anxious symptoms, substance use, major depressive disorder (MDD), post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and fewer family relationships (Andover 4). Plus, with the risk factors we must be aware of the warning signs and with any adolescent it may seem that there may be nothing wrong with them, but honestly there could be. Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a very popular suicide prevention national network local crisis center that mention that warning signs could be from sleeping to little or too much, extreme mood swings, increasing use of alcohol/drugs, talking about hopelessness/having no reason to live, talking about being a burden to others, withdrawing/isolating themselves. Hamilton High lost four students by suicide in the past years, a series of tragedies which caused a lot of uncomfortableness around students. One student, Jeff Nelson, gave no obvious warning signs or indications of suicidal thoughts. In response to these incident, the school has created a new crisis team to help the students confront and deal with their emotional lives. Through an experiment called Character Day, the school leadership tried to get students to talk and share personal life to bring them together. From 1980 to 1992 the rate of suicides involving persons from the ages of 10–14 years old has increased by 120 percent, and has increased 28.3 percent when involving persons from the ages of 15–19 years old (Suicide 451). More recently in a poll of 3,210 high–school honor students, a stunning one–quarter have seriously considered suicide (Eaton 15). Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among teens, falling second only to accidents (Roberts 45). This data, however, may be inaccurate, being that deaths labeled accidental may have actually been teen suicides. Also, many families may not want to report suicides or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Violent behavior and suicide may be directly related to altered brain chemistry according to Marie Asberg, a Swedish psychiatrist. She has found that there are lower levels of the cerebrospinal chemical 5–HIAA in suicidal subjects, when compared to "normal" subjects. This chemical is a by product of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, which may regulate mood and aggression (Long 25). According to Dr. Michael Stanley, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, "the serotonin data [is] the most potentially promising development in the suicide prevention field." According to Stanley, it may be possible to test whether or not a person may be suicidal (qtd. in Long 25). Some say that the incrteased rate of completed suicicdes may be atributed to the use of more leathal means during attempts. Another major factor that relates to adolescent suicide is the use of drugs and alcohol. Experts estimated that an amazing three out of four youths that commit suicide have abused drugs at one time or another. Alcohol has also been found in the blood of at least half of all adolescents at the time of there suicide (Long 23). There are many reasons why drugs and alcohol create a higher risk of suicide. Two main types of psychotherapies–cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT)–are effective in treating depression. The goal of CBT is to change habitual patterns of thinking and acting that may be contributing to a person's problems. In IPT, a person learns to help identify the problem that triggered a bout of depression, then learns the necessary social and communication skills to resolve that problem successfully. While both medication and psychotherapy are proved to help depression, a combination of the two appears to be the best method. In a recent study of 439 depressed adolescents, 71% improved by the combination treatment of medication and psychotherapy, better than the 61% who responded to medication alone and 43% for psychotherapy alone. (Irwin, Evans, and Wasmer 80). Somehow or other, treatment for depression seems to work at least partly by correcting imbalances in brain chemicals. However, many people with a depressive disorder never seek treatment even though the majority, even those with the most severe depression, can get better with treatment ("National Institute of Mental Health"). According to the NDSUH, only 34.7% of teens who had major depression this past year received treatment.
