Green Mile Criminological Theory
An Innocent Walk "Usually death row is called the last mile, we called ours the green mile" (Darabont, 1999). That is how the story of Paul
Edgecomb and John Coffey begins in the film The Green Mile. Paul Edgecomb is a prison guard on death row. While on duty, they bring in a new
prisoner John Coffey. Mr. Coffey has been sent to the green mile for the murder of two young girls. However, throughout the film, Mr. Coffey seems
to be nothing but calm and helpful in any necessary situation. This is noticed by Mr. Edgecomb, who witnessed the miracles John could perform first
hand. Mr. Coffey was able to heal sicknesses and this made Mr. Edgecomb wonder how a person who was given this gift could kill two people. Mr.
Coffey, much like the other prisoners on the green mile, faced the ultimate punishment but not before he proved his innocence. He showed Mr.
Edgecomb and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rational choice theory was founded by Derek Cornish and Ronald Clarke (Lilly, 2012, p. 362). This theory explains "crime is not simply due to
underlying motivations or predispositions; it also involves a concrete choice" (Lilly, 2012, p. 362). People must make choices "if these motivations
are to result in an actual criminal act" (Lilly, 2012, p. 362). There is not just one factor motivating them. These people know the consequences of their
actions, and decide to act on them anyways. Cultural deviance theory explains that "criminal beliefs exist that define criminal acts as permissible or,
even more positively, as required" (Lilly, 2012). This theory relates to the rational choice theory in many ways. The people who are committing the
crimes believe that the crime is necessary, so they are making the choice to act upon that belief. Also, there are many different factors that are
incorporated into the belief that makes it acceptable to act in a criminal

What Is The Theme Of The Green Mile
Stephen King and his story, the green mile
Stephen King is a world known author who writes horror/psychological fiction. As a boy, he was interested in horror books. He wrote some stories
himself, just for fun, and he never stopped. In 1996 he published the green mile, (a movie was made later on).
The story is about the John Coffey and his execution in E–block at Cold–Mountain State Penitentiary. Hal Moores is the warden of the penitentiary, his
wife is very sick. Paul Edgecomb is the head of E–block and a friend of Moores. E–block is where they keep the death row prisoners and perform
capital punishment. One day Paul receives a prisoner who supposedly raped and killed two young farm girls. The prisoner, John Coffey, has some
weird powers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jingles, the unusual mouse spending a lot of time in E–block. Del was incarcerated because he raped and murdered a young girl, started a fire to cover
it up, which resulted in multiple deaths. Before Percy ruined his execution Paul and Brutus had promised to take care of Mr. Jingles.
John Coffey was convicted of the rape and murder of two tiny farm girls. He is as big as a giant, but he isn't scary. Unexpectedly the man is scared of
the dark and holds magical powers. He makes many friends on E–block, they are fascinated by his magic and kindness. John gave some of his magic to
Paul and Mr. Jingles causing them both to live an unnaturally long life. At his execution Paul shook his hand one last time.
The first and most noticeable difference between the movie and book is how the story is told. At the nursing home Paul has a friend, Elaine. In the
movie he tells her what happened because it upset him. While in the book he writes the story and lets her read it. The book often comes back to the
elderly Paul and sees how he's doing, in the movie we only see him in the beginning and the end.
For some reason the directors of the movie decided to leave out Janet's death. I think that part was very important and it helped us understand what Paul
has to go through with his long life

Scene Analysis of "The Green Mile" Essay
The film The Green Mile was originally written by Stephen King and later directed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the guards and inmates of a
penitentiary's Death Row during the great depression. There is a certain monotony that comes with working on Death Row and Paul Edgecomb,
played by Tom Hanks, has become numb to the fact that he is paid to take lives; that is until John Coffey gets sentenced to death and is sent to Paul's
"green mile". John Coffey is a very large black man that was accused of rape and murder of two little girls, and in the 1930's having charges like that
brought upon you was grounds for the death penalty, especially for a black man in the south. Through the movie we see that although large in nature,
John is quite... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jingles. Quite a lot of time has passed in the movie from Paul on the Green Mile to Paul in the nursing home, this is referred to as cinematic time.
He has walked with another resident, Elaine who is a minor character, out to an old shed on location filled with objects of the past, usual things
found in a shed but they were all covered in dust. Just that screen shot of the two elderly people juxtaposed together to create a composition that
plays off of each other is very powerful in itself. The book The Philosophy of Language Film Analysis explains to us that these types of scenarios,
elderly people in an old building, help to create a really strong scene and help the movie a lot. If we has seen Paul and Elaine walk into a brand–new
mansion the effect of Paul's suffering would not be understood. The next shot is of both Paul and Elaine getting down on the old wood floor and are
playing with Mr. Jingles. Then Paul starts explaining the details of the story to Elaine and they go back and forth conversing. He is explaining to her
that he was cursed for killing "a miracle of God" and his punishment is to stay alive while those around him that he loves must die. Both he and Mr.
Jingles got a piece of John Coffey when they had their little encounters with him, and together they must go on. We see three different shots throughout
the majority of this scene. First it goes back and forth with shot and reverse shot as Paul and Elaine are

Rationalism In John Coffey's 'The Green Mile'
John Freud's main behavior he distributes is his strong defense mechanism. The one John Coffey demonstrates the defense mechanism of
regression. Regression is one shows results of being able to cope in an adaptive way. When John is put into prison these behaviors of being scared
of the dark became worse. Another defense mechanism that is seen is rationalization and it is displayed by Paul. Rationalization is when
someone's feelings are being bale to be justified. Paul shows rationalization when he finally justifies the killing of an innocent man because he has
been convicted guilty in a court of law and they gave him a chance to leave and he didn't. Even though Paul knows the real truth about whether
John is guilty or not he looks at all the case evidence to help him believe he should go down the green mile. Percy shows the defense mechanism
called projection. His is when you deal with your feelings by applying them to other peoples. A way the movie shows is the way Percy thinks the
workers of the prison and the prisoners and worthless when really he is worthless. Many of the inmates also have lost track of how it is outside of
prison. This is known as external locus of control and it is the idea that someone fate is controlled by something that is out of their hands. The
prisoners in the Green Mile are all sentenced to death and do not attempt to change their fates because they know there is no way to change it
because it has already been sealed. Paul also shows this because he knows that John is innocent but there is nothing he can do about it because the
court has already put him on death row. Percy shows he has a very low self–esteem. People who have a low self–esteem tend to make fun of others or
put others down to make themselves feel bigger and better. Percy Does this throughout the movie by putting all the prisoners down and calling
them mean names. Percy also was racist towards John because he was black and made fun of his physical characteristics because Percy was a very
small man. John was a huge Black Man so the townspeople did not like him and gave people a negative way of thinking of him. One of the main
reasons he got framed for the crime of murdering the two girls was his appearance. This

Elements of Design in the Green Mile
The Green Mile is an exceptional film that was created in the year 1999. This film was nominated for four academy awards: Best Supporting Actor,
Best Picture, Best Sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay. This movie teaches us how different the times were back in the 1900s compared to the way it
is now. The movie is set in 1935 which was during the times of theGreat Depression. It also illustrates death row and how execution is still a problem
to where it is not just and fair. There are several well–known actors that cast in this film. Each actor plays a very unique role and elements ... Show more

The production designer, who is also sometimes called the art director, is responsible for maintaining the sets, props and the costumes so that they are
in sync with the story and the character's role (Goodykontz & Jacobs, 2011). Production designers are head of the department on film crews and
they are responsible for the art department. Basically, they may be asked to look at scripts to decide how much time the art department needs to spend
on films. They also calculate the budgets to figure out how much money will be spent as well. Furthermore, they will provide their design sketches
expressing detailing mood, lighting, composition and color to the art directors who oversees the production (Anonymous, 2012).
In this scene, the "Miracle Worker", the lighting is low because it is night time, but there are lights on inside of the house in the bedroom where the
warden wife is lying in bed. The lighting is very dim which evokes a depressing and gloomy mood. It draws the audience into the scene to where
they can feel the same pain and sorrow that the actors feel. John Coffey places his lips over the warden's wife's lips to retrieve the sickness of the
cancer from her body. The chandelier begins to brighten and the sound of the music increases as the scene becomes more intense. There is a sign of

Green Mile Ethics
THE GREEN MILE MINI ESSAY The Green Mile, a 1999 film directed by Frank Darabont, focuses on virtue ethics. Paul Edgecombe (played by
Tom Hanks) is in charge of overseeing executions by electric chair, and one of the inmates on death row is a huge black man, John Coffey (Michael
Clarke Duncan), who convicted based on circumstantial evident of the murder of two white children. In contrast to his menacing size, Coffey is quite
childlike in his innocence, as well as a magical healer (Rainer, 2018). The principles of virtue ethics are dramatized most clearly in the contrast between
the character of Paul Edgecombe and Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchinson), whose aunt is married to the governor, which means he could have any
number of state positions,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Percy is especially abuse towards inmate Eduard Delacroix. He intentionally Delacroix's fingers with his baton, and steps on his pet mouse. However,
his most sadistic action is to sabotage the execution of Arlen Bitterbuck, a Native–American. Percy does this by not wetting a sponge, which placed
under the skullcap on the electric chair. This procedure ensures that the electrical current is carried properly, and ensures a swift death. Arlen dies
screaming, and it is obvious that Percy enjoys his pain. He taps the Arlen's burned face after his death and comments, "Chief! Drop us a card from
Hell, let us know if it's hot enough" (Darabont,

Shawshank Redemption And The Green Mile Comparison
The two films that I am going to compare and contrast are The Shawkshank Redemption and The Green Mile. The movies The Shawshank Redemption
and The Green Mile are connected not just by the way that both were regulated by Frank Darabont yet by the way that both were gotten from stories
composed by Stephen King. These connections give the stories comparative sensibilities, and the directorial style is additionally comparable for both
movies. In each one case, a focal character who may serve as an Everyman confronting phenomenal circumstances must grapple with his surroundings
and with occasions that are outside his ability to control. Both movies additionally happen in jail settings, however the settings are altogether different

Executive Frank Darabont creates this companionship in the connection of an arrangement of jail motion picture prosaisms, from convicts viewing a
film to extorting gatekeepers to adapting to the moderate section of time. One issue with the film is that it appears to have been composed and
controlled as though attempting to bring each expression of the first short story to life. Darabont has the same issue with The Green Mile, which in
any event gets from a novel, one initially distributed in portions. Still, Darabont has a tendency to take quite a while to create his thoughts and to
bring out thoughts that great movie producers can typically bestow with a cam move, a declaration from a performing artist, or some little bit of
business. Darabont may advocate his style as a method for reproducing the moderate time period of jail life, however this methodology can likewise
undercut the passionate power of a significant part of the show. Commentator Janet Maslin says simply this when she says that the film is given a
more far reaching treatment than the material warrants: It comes down to an overall populated show with a generally straightforward story, one that
could have been told with more economy and less talky bits of business around the cellblock. As adjusted by Frank Darabont with as much excellent
expertise as he brought to King's other jail story, "The Shawshank Redemption," its a film with a counterproductive inclination to take as much time as

Comparison Of Capital Punishment In Green Mile And Dead...
Capital punishment is a human way of being able to kill someone down for a certain crime. The movie Green Mile and Dead Man Walking both
have scenes where Frank Darabont and Tim Robbins put the audience in a negative view about the death penalty. The green mile has two major points
where it puts you in a negative position with Eduard Delacroix execution and how brutal it was and John Coffey's story of why he is in there and his
execution knowing he is innocent. Dead man walking had one major scene where they put you negative spot about capital punishment and that is when
Mathew gives his speech to the victims' families saying sorry for robbing the families of their children and the times they could have spent with them.
Both directors have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the opposite in Dead Man Walking in Matthew did commit the crime but blames everyone one else when John Coffey just can't save himself.
John Coffey starts out looking like a big tough bad looking criminal that would have done the crime, but over the rest of the movie they convey
him as a gentle giant that seems like he could not have done it at all. As instead you have Matthew that starts off as a killer and just gets proved
more and more till he admits he did the crime. Frank Darabont uses this to put the audience in a bad perspective in that John Coffey has been
sentenced to death even though he did not commit the crime. As Tim Robbins lets you want to hate Matthew but then makes you feel bad for him
when you see how much the family hates him and the way he apologises. In the Green Mile the audience has to see an innocent person be put to
death and the family enjoy it even though he is innocent making the people watching feel terrible about capital punishment. When in Dead Man
Walking it is that he is a bad person that askes for forgiveness in the way Matthew says "I hope my death gives you some relief" gets the audience to
feel bad in the way that he apologies to the family. Frank Darabont makes everyone also have to see his face during the execution to show how brutal
they look and why they cover their face. This is to show the pain that he was going though in the execution, this is to show that the way of capital
punishment is not humane in any way but

Analysis of the Green Mile 1
In the film Green Mile, different sociological theories and concepts can be useful in considering how societies rule our behaviors in life within
different cultural places and times. A theory developed by sociologist Emile Durkheim known as the functionalist perspective profoundly applies
through out the film. Concepts that are also seen in the film includes: human agency, norms, folkways, mores, and master status with a few theories
and concepts of deviance. Green Mile Green Mile is a movie adapted from a story about the lives of a few guards on duty in death row. The story

The second is responding to those cultural values and moral boundaries and the third is responding to these values and boundaries are what bring
people together. This is known as social solidarity. Moreover, Societies are held together by both consensus with values and coercion. The
functionalist view is that the balance of harmony among the society is held up by societal institutions. For example, schools, church and family
are seen as the most significant foundation for an adequately functional society. Green Mile and Functionalism Roles are the behavioral
expectations for the people who occupy a particular social position. Paul, the other guards and the prisoners' roles have behavioral expectations.
For example, the guards must cooperate with their social roles and expectations of them for unity within the E block. Those who do not cooperate
with this societal norm on the "Green Mile" are set as examples and are thus punished to provide the sense of right from wrong in sustaining the
prison societal roles of its members. Percy begins yelling "dead man walking" as he brings the prisoner into the E Block. In Percy's mind it is his
role to be portrayed as a brutal guard. He emulates a violent man with arrogance and believes that he has to demonstrate his power over the prisoners
and he says and does as he pleases with little regards to others. On many occasions through the film, Paul initiates Percy's punishments in subtle ways
with the other guards

Animal Farm And The Green Mile By Stephen King
For tenth grade Honors English we had to read Animal Farm by George Orwell, and The Green Mile by Stephen King. We then had to choose one
literary device and discus how both authors used it in their books. I chose symbolism because it leaves the reader with a new way of thinking about
communism and the death row, it adds more depth to the story, and it makes a connection with two different times in history. Webster Dictionary
defends symbolism as 1) representation by symbols, 2) a system of symbols, and 3) symbolic meaning. Symbolism plays an important role in both
Animal farm and The Green Mile.

Jingles when he was running to get the spool that Eduard Delacroix (which is one of the inmates) had thrown. He was almost dead, but then John
Coffey picked him up and "Mr. Jingles tail was no longer dying of pendulum it was snapping briskly from side to side, like a cat in a bird catching
mood. And then, from inside Coffey's append hands, came a perfectly familiar squeak." (King 265). John Coffey healed a mouse that had been
stomped on by Percy; he also healed Paul's UTI. "Helped, he said. I helped it didn't I?"(King 185). He also healed Melly of her brain tumor "John
Coffey pulled away from her, and I saw that her face had smoothed out." (King 406). John Coffey has the powers to heal the sick the stuffing and
the dying. John Coffey is symbolizing a saint. He was sent by God to help people and animals that needed his help. Coffey head both Paul and Mr.

mice, I guess, but Mr. Jingles' time is just about up."(King 523). A normal rat is supposed to live for about two to three years, but when Mr. Jingles
died he was about 65 years old, and Paul was over 104 years old. Stephen King uses symbolism in his book The Green Mile to create a new way of
thinking about the death row for the reader.

Green Mile Portrays Our Execution System
Is it fitting that the Green Mile portrays our execution system in such a demeaning way? Some argue this is an accurate portrayal of our, as they
would say broken system. The book seems to exaggerate key details to prove how cowardly this system is. As the character start to get to know each
other life is suddenly snapped away from them, how you may be asking through the death penalty. This book does accurately portrait how corrupt this
system can become. Eduard Delacroix execution had a huge impact on Paul Edgecombes thinking throughout the story. After the execution of Eduard

The green mile is a very powerful movie with lots of emotion. It is about a man called John Coffey who has been blamed for a murder he did not

prison the guards and other prisoners soon find out John Coffey has a gift, which he can heal and take back the evil that has been done.
What I enjoyed about the green mile is how John Coffey has such care for all the people in the prison and how all he wants to do is help and take back
anything bad. I remember when he first came to his cell and he told the guard if he would keep the light on after bed time, I was surprised by this

"Never confuse the size of your paycheck with the size of your talent."–Marlon Brando. This is very true when it comes to supporting actors. Many
times the supporting actors will get payed less than the lead actors, of course there are exceptions to that case, but for the most part that is true. The
funny thing is, you can't tell the story without other characters. Just think about the movie Cinderella, she wouldn't have been able to go to the ball or
meet the prince unless her fairy godmother a.k.a supporting actor, came to her rescue. She wouldn't have ever meet anyone in the first place unless
there was a prince a.k.a another supporting actor. Some of the most iconic films wouldn't be that way if it wasn't for the supporting actors helping ...

The Green Mile is a movie that is based on a Stephen King novel that goes by the same name. The story is one of a heart–wrenching and deeply
allegorical plot. It is told by the man Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), who, at the time of his recollection, is six decades removed from his position as
head guard on death row, or as the inmates call it, "The Green Mile". Edgecomb tells of one inmate who was brought into his custody that changed his
life: John Coffey (the late Michael Clarke Duncan), who was convicted of the sadistic rape and murder of two 9–year–old sisters. However, contrary to
his size and the fearsome crimes for which he is serving time, Coffey seems to be a very kind and well–mannered man; acting more like an innocent

I assured them that I would do the project, and that they could just copy down my work and make it look as if it were their own; taking their burdens

substantial amount of time to work on this project, and when the due date arrived, it was finished. The next time I saw them, I allowed my friends to
see my work and copy it. They got to go to their party, and they also got to turn in their work. Later in the school year, I began to notice that
whenever some work needed to be done, my "friends" looked to me to handle it so that they could reap the benefits when it was done. I decided
that what I had developed with my friends was a parasitic relationship: they would just wait until all of the hard work necessary to achieve
something was completed, and then leap in to wade in the benefactors. I decided that what I was doing was not right for me, or them: my work
ethic was being exploited by people who I assumed were friends, and they were growing unhealthily dependent on me as they were not able to
develop certain life skills due to their lack of participation in these academic endeavors. Consequently, I cut the cords on the relationship; I stopped
doing work for my friends and allowed them to do it on their own. Their grades dropped, but they also learned that

Essay on Main Themes in "The Green Mile"
One of the main themes in "The Green Mile" is death. It encapsulates the whole novel, leaving the reader to think deeply about their fate. It's an
obvious theme, considering the story takes place on death row. However, further analysis reveals a deeper meaning than men dying in the electric
chair for their crimes. "And I think about all of us. Walking our own green mile; each in our own time."(Pg 434) Paul said. The reader will discover
that the Green Mile itself is a metaphor for death. Paul compared life at the Green Mile to life for a free citizen, because both lifestyles will end in
the same way. Death is inevitable. For the prisoners, they have a set number of days until their execution, so their "Green Mile" is relatively short. A...

But Paul was going to try. He was trying to release John at all costs, he knew it was an injustice. When he consults John about his potential release,
he adamantly refuses. He thought the world was far too of cruel a place to live any longer, and he knew the electric chair was his fate. King's
trying to challenge the reader's beliefs. The reader might ask: Is justice always served in the legal system? These are questions one must ask
oneself. Just because a person looks intimidating and is convicted of a crime, they aren't always guilty. Stephen King is simply trying to say that
the legal system can have its flaws. One must look past physical appearance and find sufficient evidence before proving another guilty. The last
central theme in the novel, "The Green Mile" is racism. Keep in mind, this story was based in the '30s, therefore racism was a massive issue, more
so than the present day. Paul's thought of black men going to court back then was shown when he said "Appeals weren't for the likes of John
Coffey, not back then; they had their way in court and then the world forgot them until they saw a squib in the paper saying a certain fellow had
taken a little electricity along about midnight." Because racism was such an issue back then, John's lawyer had given up on him, thought it was a
hopeless case. Due to racism, John didn't get a fair trial. King's trying to show readers that racism can affect so much in life. If John had been your

Differences In The Green Mile By Stephen King
Many people get judged everyday and in some cases it is extremely bad, just like when everyone judged John Coffey. I read and watched The Green
Mile by Stephen King in the book and the movie King tells the story of a very large man who is accused of killing two little girls. The only reason
they think he did it because he was found holding the dead girls, and he is a very large man at 7 feet tall. However the book and movie have the
same storyline and theme there still are big differences and similarities in the setting and time that changes some events. There are only a few
differences in The Green Mile but the most major is that the book takes place in 1932 and the movie takes place in 1935. Even though it is only a few
years difference it can change the way people acted, dressed, and their jobs. This is a big difference because the movie is now based further into the
Depression, Which means that many more people had lost their jobs and were suffering more. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

deserve what is happening to him. Then after the execution when they have John in the back on a stretcher they give him his necklace back and they

The Green Mile Symbolism Essay
The film, The Green Mile, portrays several deep religious themes through symbolism to portray the main character John Coffey. The ideas of
Christianity are shown through several of these underlying themes. The cross and God are the key religious symbols portrayed throughout this movie.
Some of the main themes I will talk about are capital punishment, racism and Christianity symbols. Also, I will describe ways cinematography is used
in the film; some examples are cross cutting, flashback, three shot and close–up.

Before electrocution the primary methods of capital punishment were hanging, firing squad and gas chambers (Dow, 2000). The era of The Green
Mile takes place in the 1930s, but Louisiana did not begin to use the electric chair until around 1940. Studies show that King made an error on the
timespan in his book (Arbeiter, 2015). Texas was the first state to use lethal injections on prisoners on death row in 1977, and is now the only type of
capital punishment used (Dow, 2000).
During this time, African Americans experienced prejudice towards them and were not given an equal chance. This statistic will help the audience
understand the segregation occurring in this movie; during the early 1930's about 50% of the Southern towns were African American and the
people did not have the right to vote (Dieter, 1998). African Americans were not allowed to marry whites at the time or even date in public. This
movie opens with police officers screaming at John Coffey and pointing guns at him. This is the first example of racism shown in the movie. It was
found that in 1983 Philadelphia, as well as other states, African Americans were more likely to get the death penalty. Research also shows that 38% of
African Americans were given the death penalty over other ethnic groups that committed the same crimes (Dieter, 1998). Even after all this, John
Coffey is still the definition of compassion. He has a huge heart full of grace and sorrow. He wants to see more

Written by Stephen King in 1996, the film adaptation of The Green Mile, directed by Frank Darabont, explores the ideas of death row and the use of
power. Set in 1935, the movie follows the story of John Coffey, an alleged double murderer sentenced to death, and the guards at Cold Mountain
Penitentiary in charge of inmates on death row. Cinematic techniques were made use of to add to the intensity of the film as well as to engage the
audience.
Two types of behaviour were shown towards the inmates on death row in The Green Mile, exhibiting the different uses of power. Guards Paul, Brutus,
Dean and Harry treat the inmates with respect and in a well–mannered way, not aggravating them. Paul once said, "Men under strain can snap; hurt

in on the faces of the guards, and of the people who found John with the dead girls. Zooming up on the faces of the people showed their facial
expressions to seeing John for the first time. The song used in The Green Mile was Cheek to Cheek from the film Top Hat, where the song was sung
when Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were dancing together. Lyrics from the song state, "I'm in heaven", and is heard when John was allowed to
watch a film for the first time before he was executed. While John was watching Top Hat, he was incredibly happy at the time, reflecting the lyrics sung
when he was watching the movie. At the beginning of the movie, when an older Paul is watching the same movie, Paul was brought to tears, thinking
of how he had to execute an innocent man and the memories of watching the movie with

Stephen King's 'The Green Mile'
The Green Mile is beyond unique with the bizarre (or gruesome) plot that Stephen King sets up. King, being a horror story writer, is known for his
gory stories that keep readers on edge and up at night. But The Green Mile is different. No ghosts, vampires, rabid dogs, or anything of the sort.
Just good ol' fashion rape and murder... or that's what King wants you think. The story takes place in the early 1930s on death row in the Cold
Mountain State Penitentiary. Paul Edgecomb narrates the story of when he was Death Row's (otherwise known as "The Green Mile") cell block
supervisor. The story follows Paul, Percy the abusive guard, Eduard Delacroix the crazy arsonist, accused rapist and murderer of twin girls, John
Coffey, and last but not least

Similarities between Jesus Christ and John Coffey in The Green Mile
Set on Death Row in a Southern prison in 1935, The Green Mile is the remarkable story of the cell block's head guard, who develops an emotional, and
unusual relationship with one inmate who possesses a magical gift that is both mysterious and miraculous. This inmate is John Coffey, who beyond his
simple naive nature possess a supernatural gift. This gift is what introduces the correlation between Coffey and Jesus Christ.
The easiest similarity to find between the two characters is there initials. There is a connection between JC, John Coffey and JC, Jesus Christ. Despite
his size John Coffey was humble and gentle. Though the guards were slowly but surely convinced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He even asked for forgiveness and was humbled to the point of death. This is another strong quality he shared with Jesus. Jesus was deserted by all
his friends, yet through his strong heart he endured. In John Coffey we see a true Christ figure that had miraculous powers and died in the place of
another. This movie is a great representation of Jesus Christ and the life that he lived.
Upon doing research for this paper I also found out many other similarities that I had not realized when I read the book. For example, when asked
by another prisoner if he wants to help him escape, "John Coffey's response is surprising and perfect. He wants to die, wants to return, to leave this
earth, because the pain of other people is too strong to bear ("like shards of glass in my head"), hence the constant mourning for others, not for
himself or for his own fate. This is a clear connection to Christ in that modern desires to die almost always only stem from an intense personal pain,
not a pain felt for others. He does show a hint of a human side in his nervousness and as he sings "heaven..I'm in heaven.." before the switch is
thrown. This correlates well when Christ himself calls out to his father while on the cross ("heaven") and also when he prayed beforehand in the
garden."
Though these two characters have many similarities they also share

Green Mile Misconceptions
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the Literary and Media Arts Festival. Today's presentation will address and expose, Frank Darabont's corrupt
film adaptation of, The Green Mile, as a blatant juxtaposition of Paul Edgecombe's journal exemplification. Through the film, audiences are invited to
follow the disturbing experiences and events at the Green Mile in 1932 at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary death row, as articulated in Mr. Edgecombe's
account. The film constructs Percy Wetmore as cruel, malevolent and aggressive, however, this is contrasted by the reality presented in the journal;
Edgecombe portrays characteristics of dedication, determination, and is inadequately trained. Three scenes in both the written evidence and the film will

Jingles cleverly manipulates the technique of pathos and further establishes the demonization of Percy. This is enforced through a low and deceptive
camera angle, confronting sound effects and elusive dialogue. Audiences follow Mr. Jingles, common vermin, running across the Green Mile. When
Percy's foot materialises from above, stomping on the mouse, accompanied by an overdramatised crack upon impact, his actions are 'commemorated'
with a maliciously toned sentence, "I knew I'd get him sooner or later. Just a matter of time, really". Whilst, the same dialogue is evident in the journal,
the implied message is discrepant. It is also omitted from the movie that Paul said, "...we would kill it. Better to kill the scout...than have to live with
the pilgrims." (pp.63–64). Percy was simply fulfilling his job, it is irrational that he would be reprimanded for his persistence. These double standards
paired with the dark and ominous lighting and high camera angle are utilised by Darabont in his biased depiction of the journal and efforts to display
Percy as a character of venomous

Morality In The Green Mile
Being a moral person comes down to the choices being made. Whether they will create benefits or adversity for others around, they should satisfy the
one making the decisions. The film, The Green Mile, directed by Frank Darabont, based on the novel written by Stephen King, displays many concepts
of morality–what is right or wrong–through the decisions of the protagonists Paul Edgecomb and John Coffey. Paul and John reveal throughout the
film that everyone can have different views, as both they both have various outlooks of the moral ideal. The concept of morality within the film
develops through the complex decisions that the characters have to make. These decisions can lead to hardships for many others in the future, but the
choices made throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although life may be at its worst, the sense of morality within, will still shine through. As John Coffey is on death row, his moral decisions shine past
him. While Paul Edgecomb feels the need to help those around him, it also shines. The moral decisions both these characters make shows who they
are inside, exposing their beliefs in life. This also shows that morality is subjective to those as everyone's decisions are based on something
personal and their own worldviews for the certain situations. As morality is subjective; as it could be seen as offensive, but yet it can be seen as
acceptable. John Coffey's decision on allowing his gift to leave the world may be seen as offensive to most, but to John himself it is seen as
acceptable because he was in pain. In addition to so, Paul Edgecomb's decision to allow the execution of John may also seem as unacceptable, as he
knew John was innocent, but as John himself wanted to leave the world, Paul allowed it. Many moral decisions throughout the film are double edge
swords, as they can create benefits or adversity; in the end, morality between characters is embodied within the film The Green Mile, allowing them to
make the choices best fitted for

Racial Stereotype in the Movie The Green Mile
Racial stereotypes have always invaded films, from the earliest silent film, to the most modern film production. Stereotypes in early America had
significant influence over how other viewed African Americans, Latinos, Asians etc. The most stereotyped race in history is the black male. In most
early films, they were portrayed as simple minded and careless individuals, but when African Americans started to stand up for themselves films
portrayed them as more savage and bloodthirsty. In the 1999 film The Green Mile directed by Frank Darabont, Michael Clarke Duncan is portrayed
as John Coffey a giant simple minded black man in 1934 who is accused of raping and killing two white girls. This is a stereotype that has been used

"the black culture emerged from the ragged edges of a European society. This was the real necessity that was historically constructed by the white
supremacist to bring us down. We learned to live and deal with whatever came our way. The ragged edges of not being able to eat, having a place
to live, or health care developed our culture into what it is today." (Kruger and Mariani, pp 93). Blacks, along with other people of color, have
always been always been oppressed for how they looked. If one goes back in history, they will find that the Native Americans who first inhabited this
land were also subjected to oppression, genocide, rape, killing etc. It was a five hundred year struggle that decimated a cultures to the point where they
are almost extinct. One would think that with the changing of eras actions like this would stop, but they do not. The genocide of Native Americans is
still on going. On Pine Ridge reservation, in South Dakota, the murder rate is seventy percent higher than the national average. This is easily one of the
most dangerous places in America today. The treatment of John Coffey can be likened to that of the Native Americans. Both Native Americans and
African Americans make up a majority of the national prison system. In northern states like South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, Native Americans
were treated just like the African Americans were in the south. They are beat, lynched and killed. Some of these activities still take place. Like African

Essay on The Green Mile
The Green Mile For my third quarter book report I read The Green Mile written by Stephen King. This book is about an old man, Paul Edgecomb,
recalling his experiences when he worked as the cell block captain in Cold Mountain state penitentiary. Paul was the cell block captain of death row in
this Alabama correctional institute.
This story takes place in a nursing home. The narrator Paul is writing a book about when he was cell block captain in 1932. During the time he is
writing his book he points out how people never change, how there is always the bully, and so on. He compares writing the book to a time machine.

Stephan King does an excellent job using many detail, and sensory images. The title fits the book perfectly. On death row Paul describes the floor as
being a lime Green, and death row is often called the mile. Therefore, in this book Paul and the other death row guards call their territory the Green
Mile. Another reason this is a good title is because more than three fourths of the book takes place on the Green Mile. Not only is the Green Mile
the name of the cell block that Paul and the other guards head, but in this book it is referred to as an idea. The Green Mile is used as a synonym to
the road of death. During his account of what happened in 1932, he speaks of a gift he has earned.
This gift keeps him from dying in a timely fashion. So the end of the book after he has wrote his book his, and has nothing left to live for he
comments on the gift he has, and says "but sometimes, oh God, the Green Mile is so long". Back in 1932 a prisoner arrived on the Green Mile, his
name was John Coffey. He was a well built, tall, could not remember much, and was African American. He was found guilty of murdering, and
raping two young girls. Because he was African American, in Alabama, in 1932 he had no chance of being acquitted. On top of that, he was found
with the victims in his arms. After he was in on the Green Mile for a while, Paul wondered if this man could have committed such a violent crime.
Paul discovered John Coffey had a healing power. Then after

What Is The Theme Of The Green Mile By Stephen King
We often tend to only read stories that appeal to our interests. I never would have thought I would enjoy a book written by Stephen King. His unique
writing style makes stories we would usually find gruesome and disturbing, to be interesting. In his novel, "The Green Mile," King uses flashbacks,
supernatural powers, good versus evil and other important literary devices to draw the reader's attention. This story is centered around a death row
supervisor, Paul Edgecomb, and his experiences throughout his career, especially his encounter with an unusual inmate, John Coffey. King's description
of the experiences inside Cold Mountain Penitentiary Block E are written in such a way that makes the audience sense the emotions of the characters.
This story is a very powerful, emotional, anguish, and highly enjoyable read. Stephen King is often known for his horror theme in his novels. In his
book, "The Green Mile," the theme is centered around death. This story is told in first–person narrative by Paul Edgecomb. It switches from Paul as on
old man in the nursing home, to his time as death row supervisor in the 1930s. Edgecomb tells his experience while he worked at Cold Mountain and
the effects it had on him throughout his life. He specifically tells about his encounter with a large, black, unusual inmate, John Coffey. Coffey has been

Some of the crimes on the streets included gang wars, food riots, and Prohibition which sparked chaos. This was due to the loss of the jobs and

fights in order to get alcohol. Prohibition lead to a rise in bootlegging alcohol and speakeasies, which were secret places where people could go to
buy and drink alcohol. This also gave a beginning to some gangsters such as Al Capone. Due to the gangsters rising and taking the law into their own
hands and rebelling against the law to obtain resources to succeed, the government had no choice but to use harsh punishments,"There were more
executions in the 1930s than in any other decade in American history, an average of 167 per years"(Bohm 2). The punishments were given according to

The Green Mile Death Quotes
The Green Mile is written about E–Block, the place where prisoners who have been sentenced to the death penalty go. This book shows many
different situations where death is involved even if it isn't necessarily the executions. Many of the deaths in the books can be related back to deaths
and how they affect people in real life. Death happens all the time, but throughout The Green Mile it is clear that death is selfish, emotionally painful,
and inevitable. All cases of murder are selfish. The Green Mile makes an example of this from the very beginning when Arthur Flanders (The
President) was introduced. He had killed his father in order to get insurance money. Possibly the biggest example of how murder is selfish is the

The Green Mile shows this when Percy steps on Mr. Jingles in front of Delacroix. Paul had noticed how calm Delacroix had been despite his
execution being one day away. Just when it seemed like Delacroix was most excited about Mr. Jingles, Percy took his chance and stepped on Mr.
Jingles while he was retrieving the wooden spool. This proved to the reader that Percy couldn't care less about Del even if it was his last day. Right
after this happened, Delacroix screamed the mouses name repeatedly, clearly hurt by Percy's actions. Situations in real life that cause emotional pain
are hurricanes and earthquakes. Many people lose sentimental items, houses and possessions, and even family and friends. Many people never
recover mentally or physically from these loses. This relates to Percy stepping on Mr. Jingles in many ways. Percy is similar to the natural disaster
because both are the reason for others pain and both are unable to feel sympathy for those that are hurt. Delacroix is similar to the victims and their
families because both are distraught by events that are not within their control. Throughout the book and real life there are many situations where death
has brought pain to people

To Kill A Mockingbird Movie And Book Comparison Essay
A story in two different formats
Everyone has their favorite books like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Notebook, and when a book generates a fan base, it can become popular enough
to become a film. This first happened in 1899, when the Brothers Grimm story, Cinderella was first adapted into a shortfilm making history, and setting
the trend for adapting fan–favorite books into movies. Books and movies can tell the same story, but at the same time can tell the same story in an
entire different way. This is extremely prevalent when comparing the Green Mile: The Complete and Serial Novel and the movie. Their differences
include how each medium told the story, the appearance of John Coffey and the Detterick twins, and Paul Edgecombe's recollection of the events that
happened on the Green Mile. Although the two bear enough similarities to allow a reader of the book or a viewer of the movie to relate the two story

The Novel ' The Green Mile '
King 's novel"The Green Mile," was a depiction of horror and imagery, or as Harold Bloom stated, "visually oriented scenarios." He teased the
senses and gave an inevitable emotional twist at the end. This story follows a special inmate possessed some unworldly powers that changed
people 's fate, when he deemed worthy. John Coffey, last name "like the drink, only not spelled the same way," (King 16) plays the hand of God in
this story, when he saved a life, cured the incurable, punished the guilty, and changed the life of Paul Edgecomb inevitably. "The arrival of John
Coffey in fall of 1932 was a hot, normal day in the E Block cells"(King 5). The guards saw this man as not much of a talker, but he often cried
himself to sleep. He was sentenced there for the rape and murder of two little girls; a crime he did not commit. John Coffey was a large black man
in both height and mass, but there was an oddity sensed about this man. "Paul Edgecomb had been acquainted with many inmates over his years,
but this is the first one he offered his hand to" (King 19). "Even now I don't know why," he stated (King 19). Coffey, a simple man, who talked very
little, touched the guards hearts very quickly in his stay. From the start, it seemed Coffey knew he was going to be killed for the crime he did not
commit. "[He was] doomed and [maybe] even perhaps eager to die and put all of the pain and misery behind him"(D 'Ammassa). He had a hand for

Additionally, the written evidence at no point claims or even insinuates that Percy ever raised his baton or even acknowledged Delacroix in this

Let your light so, shine before men, that they may see your good works. The novel A Lesson before Dying and the film Green Mile both follow the
lives of two black men, Jefferson and John Coffey, who are sentenced to death for crimes they did not commit. Jefferson was accused of robbery and

whose demeanour leads Edgcomb to believe that Coffey is innocent. For a while, life on the green mile remains normal, until the day it transpires that
Coffey possesses the ability to heal people through the power of touch. The Green Mile is a 3–hour film of two halves: firstly, painting a vivid portrait

exploring Coffey himself: his past, his crime, and his powers. He is initially misunderstood by those around him, is convicted of a crime he did not

differences can get along, and eventually form a strong friendship. Paul Edgecombe is the narrator of the story who has an influence on John and is
heavily influenced by him as well. Readers note the special bond they have early in the novella. The first time John and Paul spoke was unlike any
other experience Paul had ever had. Instead of being forceful and uncooperative like many other inmates, John was serene. Shockingly, Paul seemed to

Green Mile Essay
The Green Mile has a huge connection to the seven Catholic social teachings. The first one, human life and dignity, is very evident in the Green
Mile. The main connection with this one is how Tom Hank's character cares about John Coffey. Many people would not care or even given a
second look to someone who is in prison and on death row but Paul, the guard, gets close to him. He ends up really caring about John Coffey and
believes he is innocent. It shows human life and dignity because when he has to execute him, he believes he is going to hell and can't live with what
he has done. The film overall brings up the debate of capital punishment. To truly have respect for human life you cannot be in favor of the death
penalty. This movie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Work is presented in this film very differently from others. All the guards share a connection with one and other and are all religious besides
Percy. The show their faith and beliefs during work too. They don't treat Percy well only because of the way he treats others and how he does not
respect what he is doing. I think this is one of the best movies out there to show Solidarity. Paul is a great example throughout the movie when he
makes his connection with John Coffey. Paul does what he thinks is right by God when doing anything and brings it over in work. John is also an
example of solidarity when he heals people. He is doing his call by God and using his gif from God to help people in need. He never thinks
anything of it and never wants any credit. He is humble and just wants to share his gift to God's creation. This movie represents solidarity because
it gives us a deeper understanding of we should act as Christian people. Paul really cared for God's creation even though many times he was the one
to end their lives. He thought he was going to hell when he had to kill John Coffey. John cared for everything. He brought the mouse back to life after
Percy killed it. John also helped all the people and took in their pain.
John Coffey's life really resembles that of Jesus Christ. In one, both initials are J.C. which first shows the connection. Then, John is convicted of a
crime he did not commit just like

John Coffey In Stephen King's The Green Mile
In Stephen King's book, On Writing, he says that the main character of The Green Mile, John Coffey, is "an innocent man likely to be executed for the
crime of another, [and that he] decided to give him the initials J.C., after the most famous innocent man of all time." He goes further, saying that he
"first saw this done in Light in August (still my favorite Faulkner novel), where the sacrificial lamb is named Joe Christmas." Not unlike Christmas,
Coffey is a character about whom the reader, or, perhaps, the viewer, is given bits and pieces of information– all of which are vital, and most of which
are easily overlooked. Undoubtedly, Coffey's most notable and defining characteristic is his innocence – in the sense of both his legal absence of guilt
and his childlike behaviors. While Coffey may at first seem to be a fairly one dimensional character due to said childish innocence and characteristics,
his actions and relationships with others show a much deeper and robust characterization.
Coffey's innocence is prominent and apparent from nearly the very beginning of the movie. He cried quite often and openly admitted to being afraid of
the dark; the guards even thought he might have had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Coffey and Wharton are extreme opposites. Coffey is innocent, while Wharton is as guilty as possible. Coffey is respectful and kind, while
Wharton is rude, violent, and despicable. However, both have childlike qualities. Wharton's behavior while "on the mile" is not dissimilar to that of
a child during his "terrible two" stage. This foiling of Wharton and Coffey makes Coffey seem even kinder. It also ends up showing that Coffey, like
Edgecomb, is motivated primarily by a sense of justice. Coffey kills Wharton because Wharton is a "bad man." Obviously killing someone goes
against Coffey's innocence and childlike qualities, but keeps in line with his sense of justice and wanting to help

The Green Mile by Stephen King Essay
The Green Mile by Stephen King Summary: John Coffey is brought to Cold Mountain accused of rape and murder. It becomes known that he has a
healing touch. Paul Edgecombe, the superintendent, has sympathy for Coffey and later finds out that Coffey is indeed innocent, but can find no way
to stop the execution. Coffey proclaimed that he 'wanted to go'; and thus allowed Paul to accept Coffey's fate as he must, and go on with his life.
Central Characters: Paul Edgecombe, probably over 100, narrator, was the head of E block (death row) at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Paul faces an
internal struggle between what his job wants him to do and what he sometimes knows is the 'right'; thing. Kind and gentle, he recounts this episode of
his life... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Janice Edgecombe was Paul's wife. She died in a bus accident, setting up the character of Elaine Connelly, who Paul met at the retirement center in
his later years. Eduard Delacroix was a tiny, timid Frenchman sentenced to die in 'old sparky's'; lap. He was the owner of the mouse named Mr.
Jingles and he was used through his execution to portray Percy's evil nature and to set up the death scene for John Coffey. William (Billy the Kid)
Warton was a sadistic man who was sentenced to death at Cold Mountain also. He was the only person that Percy Wetmore was afraid of. William
intimidated Percy just as Percy intimidated everyone else. It becomes later known that William was the one who committed the crime for which
Coffey was being executed. Brad Dolan worked at Georgia Pines. He acted just like Percy once did and that scared Paul in his elderly years. Brad
was cruel, heartless, and thrived on the pain of others. Setting: Cold Mountain Penitentiary, particularly E block during the early 1930s. During the
depression this was just about the only job the guards had to choose from. Paul writes this story from his room in the Georgia Pines Retirement
Center. Point of view: When describing events of E block Paul uses first person omniscient, while his life in the retirement center is told in first person
limited. Tone: Sympathy for Paul Edgecombe, sadness and remorse for John Coffey. Irony: John Coffey, a healer, is executed for the murder of

Green Mile Criminological Theories

  • 1. Green Mile Criminological Theory An Innocent Walk "Usually death row is called the last mile, we called ours the green mile" (Darabont, 1999). That is how the story of Paul Edgecomb and John Coffey begins in the film The Green Mile. Paul Edgecomb is a prison guard on death row. While on duty, they bring in a new prisoner John Coffey. Mr. Coffey has been sent to the green mile for the murder of two young girls. However, throughout the film, Mr. Coffey seems to be nothing but calm and helpful in any necessary situation. This is noticed by Mr. Edgecomb, who witnessed the miracles John could perform first hand. 362). This theory explains "crime is not simply due to underlying motivations or predispositions; it also involves a concrete choice" (Lilly, 2012, p. 362). People must make choices "if these motivations are to result in an actual criminal act" (Lilly, 2012, p. 362). There is not just one factor motivating them. These people know the consequences of their actions, and decide to act on them anyways. Cultural deviance theory explains that "criminal beliefs exist that define criminal acts as permissible or, even more positively, as required" (Lilly, 2012). This theory relates to the rational choice theory in many ways. The people who are committing the crimes believe that the crime is necessary, so they are making the choice to act upon that belief. Also, there are many different factors that are incorporated into the belief that makes it acceptable to act in a criminal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. What Is The Theme Of The Green Mile Stephen King and his story, the green mile Stephen King is a world known author who writes horror/psychological fiction. As a boy, he was interested in horror books. He wrote some stories himself, just for fun, and he never stopped. In 1996 he published the green mile, (a movie was made later on). The story is about the John Coffey and his execution in E–block at Cold–Mountain State Penitentiary. Hal Moores is the warden of the penitentiary, his wife is very sick. Paul Edgecomb is the head of E–block and a friend of Moores. E–block is where they keep the death row prisoners and perform capital punishment. One day Paul receives a prisoner who supposedly raped and killed two young farm girls. The prisoner, John Coffey, has some weird powers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jingles, the unusual mouse spending a lot of time in E–block. Del was incarcerated because he raped and murdered a young girl, started a fire to cover it up, which resulted in multiple deaths. Before Percy ruined his execution Paul and Brutus had promised to take care of Mr. Jingles. John Coffey was convicted of the rape and murder of two tiny farm girls. He is as big as a giant, but he isn't scary. Unexpectedly the man is scared of the dark and holds magical powers. He makes many friends on E–block, they are fascinated by his magic and kindness. John gave some of his magic to Paul and Mr. Jingles causing them both to live an unnaturally long life. At his execution Paul shook his hand one last time. The first and most noticeable difference between the movie and book is how the story is told. At the nursing home Paul has a friend, Elaine. In the movie he tells her what happened because it upset him. While in the book he writes the story and lets her read it. The book often comes back to the elderly Paul and sees how he's doing, in the movie we only see him in the beginning and the end. For some reason the directors of the movie decided to leave out Janet's death. I think that part was very important and it helped us understand what Paul has to go through with his long life ... • 3. Scene Analysis of "The Green Mile" Essay The film The Green Mile was originally written by Stephen King and later directed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the guards and inmates of a penitentiary's Death Row during the great depression. There is a certain monotony that comes with working on Death Row and Paul Edgecomb, played by Tom Hanks, has become numb to the fact that he is paid to take lives; that is until John Coffey gets sentenced to death and is sent to Paul's "green mile". John Coffey is a very large black man that was accused of rape and murder of two little girls, and in the 1930's having charges like that brought upon you was grounds for the death penalty, especially for a black man in the south. Through the movie we see that although large in nature, John is quite... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jingles. Quite a lot of time has passed in the movie from Paul on the Green Mile to Paul in the nursing home, this is referred to as cinematic time. He has walked with another resident, Elaine who is a minor character, out to an old shed on location filled with objects of the past, usual things found in a shed but they were all covered in dust. Just that screen shot of the two elderly people juxtaposed together to create a composition that plays off of each other is very powerful in itself. The book The Philosophy of Language Film Analysis explains to us that these types of scenarios, elderly people in an old building, help to create a really strong scene and help the movie a lot. If we has seen Paul and Elaine walk into a brand–new mansion the effect of Paul's suffering would not be understood. The next shot is of both Paul and Elaine getting down on the old wood floor and are playing with Mr. Jingles. Then Paul starts explaining the details of the story to Elaine and they go back and forth conversing. He is explaining to her that he was cursed for killing "a miracle of God" and his punishment is to stay alive while those around him that he loves must die. Both he and Mr. Jingles got a piece of John Coffey when they had their little encounters with him, and together they must go on. We see three different shots throughout the majority of this scene. First it goes back and forth with shot and reverse shot as Paul and Elaine are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Rationalism In John Coffey's 'The Green Mile' John Freud's main behavior he distributes is his strong defense mechanism. The one John Coffey demonstrates the defense mechanism of regression. Regression is one shows results of being able to cope in an adaptive way. When John is put into prison these behaviors of being scared of the dark became worse. Another defense mechanism that is seen is rationalization and it is displayed by Paul. Rationalization is when someone's feelings are being bale to be justified. Paul shows rationalization when he finally justifies the killing of an innocent man because he has been convicted guilty in a court of law and they gave him a chance to leave and he didn't. Even though Paul knows the real truth about whether John is guilty or not he looks at all the case evidence to help him believe he should go down the green mile. Percy shows the defense mechanism called projection. His is when you deal with your feelings by applying them to other peoples. A way the movie shows is the way Percy thinks the workers of the prison and the prisoners and worthless when really he is worthless. Many of the inmates also have lost track of how it is outside of prison. This is known as external locus of control and it is the idea that someone fate is controlled by something that is out of their hands. The prisoners in the Green Mile are all sentenced to death and do not attempt to change their fates because they know there is no way to change it because it has already been sealed. Paul also shows this because he knows that John is innocent but there is nothing he can do about it because the court has already put him on death row. Percy shows he has a very low self–esteem. • 8. Comparison Of Capital Punishment In Green Mile And Dead... Capital punishment is a human way of being able to kill someone down for a certain crime. The movie Green Mile and Dead Man Walking both have scenes where Frank Darabont and Tim Robbins put the audience in a negative view about the death penalty. The green mile has two major points where it puts you in a negative position with Eduard Delacroix execution and how brutal it was and John Coffey's story of why he is in there and his execution knowing he is innocent. Dead man walking had one major scene where they put you negative spot about capital punishment and that is when Mathew gives his speech to the victims' families saying sorry for robbing the families of their children and the times they could have spent with them. John Coffey starts out looking like a big tough bad looking criminal that would have done the crime, but over the rest of the movie they convey him as a gentle giant that seems like he could not have done it at all. As instead you have Matthew that starts off as a killer and just gets proved more and more till he admits he did the crime. Frank Darabont uses this to put the audience in a bad perspective in that John Coffey has been sentenced to death even though he did not commit the crime. As Tim Robbins lets you want to hate Matthew but then makes you feel bad for him when you see how much the family hates him and the way he apologises. In the Green Mile the audience has to see an innocent person be put to death and the family enjoy it even though he is innocent making the people watching feel terrible about capital punishment. When in Dead Man Walking it is that he is a bad person that askes for forgiveness in the way Matthew says "I hope my death gives you some relief" gets the audience to feel bad in the way that he apologies to the family. Frank Darabont makes everyone also have to see his face during the execution to show how brutal they look and why they cover their face. We then had to choose one literary device and discus how both authors used it in their books. Later in the school year, I began to notice that whenever some work needed to be done, my "friends" looked to me to handle it so that they could reap the benefits when it was done. I decided that what I had developed with my friends was a parasitic relationship: they would just wait until all of the hard work necessary to achieve something was completed, and then leap in to wade in the benefactors. I decided that what I was doing was not right for me, or them: my work ethic was being exploited by people who I assumed were friends, and they were growing unhealthily dependent on me as they were not able to develop certain life skills due to their lack of participation in these academic endeavors. It's an obvious theme, considering the story takes place on death row. However, further analysis reveals a deeper meaning than men dying in the electric chair for their crimes. "And I think about all of us. Walking our own green mile; each in our own time."(Pg 434) Paul said. The reader will discover that the Green Mile itself is a metaphor for death. The reader might ask: Is justice always served in the legal system? These are questions one must ask oneself. Just because a person looks intimidating and is convicted of a crime, they aren't always guilty. Stephen King is simply trying to say that the legal system can have its flaws. One must look past physical appearance and find sufficient evidence before proving another guilty. The last central theme in the novel, "The Green Mile" is racism. Keep in mind, this story was based in the '30s, therefore racism was a massive issue, more so than the present day. Paul's thought of black men going to court back then was shown when he said "Appeals weren't for the likes of John Coffey, not back then; they had their way in court and then the world forgot them until they saw a squib in the paper saying a certain fellow had taken a little electricity along about midnight." Because racism was such an issue back then, John's lawyer had given up on him, thought it was a hopeless case. Due to racism, John didn't get a fair trial. The era of The Green Mile takes place in the 1930s, but Louisiana did not begin to use the electric chair until around 1940. Studies show that King made an error on the timespan in his book (Arbeiter, 2015). Texas was the first state to use lethal injections on prisoners on death row in 1977, and is now the only type of capital punishment used (Dow, 2000). During this time, African Americans experienced prejudice towards them and were not given an equal chance. This statistic will help the audience understand the segregation occurring in this movie; during the early 1930's about 50% of the Southern towns were African American and the people did not have the right to vote (Dieter, 1998). African Americans were not allowed to marry whites at the time or even date in public. This movie opens with police officers screaming at John Coffey and pointing guns at him. This is the first example of racism shown in the movie. It was found that in 1983 Philadelphia, as well as other states, African Americans were more likely to get the death penalty. Research also shows that 38% of African Americans were given the death penalty over other ethnic groups that committed the same crimes (Dieter, 1998). • 24. Essay on The Green Mile The Green Mile For my third quarter book report I read The Green Mile written by Stephen King. This book is about an old man, Paul Edgecomb, recalling his experiences when he worked as the cell block captain in Cold Mountain state penitentiary. Paul was the cell block captain of death row in this Alabama correctional institute. This story takes place in a nursing home. The narrator Paul is writing a book about when he was cell block captain in 1932. During the time he is writing his book he points out how people never change, how there is always the bully, and so on. He compares writing the book to a time machine. Stephan King does an excellent job using many detail, and sensory images. The title fits the book perfectly. On death row Paul describes the floor as being a lime Green, and death row is often called the mile. Therefore, in this book Paul and the other death row guards call their territory the Green Mile. Another reason this is a good title is because more than three fourths of the book takes place on the Green Mile. Not only is the Green Mile the name of the cell block that Paul and the other guards head, but in this book it is referred to as an idea. The Green Mile is used as a synonym to the road of death. During his account of what happened in 1932, he speaks of a gift he has earned. This gift keeps him from dying in a timely fashion. So the end of the book after he has wrote his book his, and has nothing left to live for he comments on the gift he has, and says "but sometimes, oh God, the Green Mile is so long". Back in 1932 a prisoner arrived on the Green Mile, his name was John Coffey. He was a well built, tall, could not remember much, and was African American. He was found guilty of murdering, and raping two young girls. Because he was African American, in Alabama, in 1932 he had no chance of being acquitted. On top of that, he was found with the victims in his arms. After he was in on the Green Mile for a while, Paul wondered if this man could have committed such a violent crime. This book shows many different situations where death is involved even if it isn't necessarily the executions. Many of the deaths in the books can be related back to deaths and how they affect people in real life. Death happens all the time, but throughout The Green Mile it is clear that death is selfish, emotionally painful, and inevitable. All cases of murder are selfish. This proved to the reader that Percy couldn't care less about Del even if it was his last day. Right after this happened, Delacroix screamed the mouses name repeatedly, clearly hurt by Percy's actions. Situations in real life that cause emotional pain are hurricanes and earthquakes. Many people lose sentimental items, houses and possessions, and even family and friends. Many people never recover mentally or physically from these loses. This relates to Percy stepping on Mr. Jingles in many ways. • 33. The Novel ' The Green Mile ' King 's novel"The Green Mile," was a depiction of horror and imagery, or as Harold Bloom stated, "visually oriented scenarios." He teased the senses and gave an inevitable emotional twist at the end. This story follows a special inmate possessed some unworldly powers that changed people 's fate, when he deemed worthy. John Coffey, last name "like the drink, only not spelled the same way," (King 16) plays the hand of God in this story, when he saved a life, cured the incurable, punished the guilty, and changed the life of Paul Edgecomb inevitably. "The arrival of John Coffey in fall of 1932 was a hot, normal day in the E Block cells"(King 5). The guards saw this man as not much of a talker, but he often cried himself to sleep. He was sentenced there for the rape and murder of two little girls; a crime he did not commit. John Coffey was a large black man in both height and mass, but there was an oddity sensed about this man. "Paul Edgecomb had been acquainted with many inmates over his years, but this is the first one he offered his hand to" (King 19). "Even now I don't know why," he stated (King 19). Coffey, a simple man, who talked very little, touched the guards hearts very quickly in his stay. From the start, it seemed Coffey knew he was going to be killed for the crime he did not commit. He goes further, saying that he "first saw this done in Light in August (still my favorite Faulkner novel), where the sacrificial lamb is named Joe Christmas." Not unlike Christmas, Coffey is a character about whom the reader, or, perhaps, the viewer, is given bits and pieces of information– all of which are vital, and most of which are easily overlooked. Undoubtedly, Coffey's most notable and defining characteristic is his innocence – in the sense of both his legal absence of guilt and his childlike behaviors. While Coffey may at first seem to be a fairly one dimensional character due to said childish innocence and characteristics, his actions and relationships with others show a much deeper and robust characterization.
