Shift
How do you see yourself five (5) years from now? Well, thanks for the cliff hanger Mr. Siege Ledesma. The movie shows two points to ponder. First, have you ever been on a job you don’t want to? A job that’s out of your comfort zone and out of your plan? Estella Alano (Yeng Constantino), a call center agent. She wants photography, paintings and arts. Still, out of practicality and in need of money, forced to take any job. But Estella doesn’t find joy and fulfillment in her job anymore, not until Trevor (Felix Rocco) came into her life. The second point, have you ever been in love with a numb guy who’s in love with his same sex? Upon taking the job, Estella found a friend in the character of Trevor, which is a gay. But, is Trevor just a friend? Or is there something more than that that Estella believes herself to be with to Trevor? Will they find each other happy ending?
I’ve got three theories here that suited for a scene on the movie Shift directed by Siege Ledesma, starring Yeng Constantino and Felix Rocco. The scene that describes a theory of Social Penetration Theory is best seen when Trevor and Estella teamed up for a project. The officemate-relationship of the antagonists penetrates and develops to a much intimate relationship could Love. The factor that develops the relationship between them is the time they spend together. It is said that the more time spent, the more likely to self disclose more intimate thought and details of their life. The next theory is Interpersonal Deception Theory, it is where Estella hides her true feelings from Trevor. The more Trevor ask Estella and the sudden change, the more Estella deceives Trevor through answering “Okay lang ako”, or simply, “Wala”. But the truth is she is jealous about Trevor having an affair with the same sex. The way Estella deceives Trevor shows central deceptive message, it is when Estella said something that is the opposite of what she really is feeling. Another one is the ancillary message, which shows both verbal and nonverbal deception, the way Estella avoids Trevor is the nonverbal one. And last theory is Cognitive Dissonance, it is when you have two good choices and make your decision then you find yourself unsure or in doubt about the choice you made. You might have to downplay the other choice in order to reassure yourself. In the scene, as I’ve said a while ago that Estella’s chosen profession is not what she really wanted. But, she told herself that it is better than to choose what she wanted, in here (call center) she can earn bigger money.
Blue Bustamante
Red, green, yellow, pink, and blue are not just colors. In the movie Blue Bustamante by Miko Levelo, starring Joem Bascon, Jun Sabayton, and Dimples Romana. These colors represents the Force Five, a fictional cartoon show in Japan. Fighting off evil monsters made of cardboard and saving planet Earth. In the Philippines, heroes are not just fictional characters, they’re all around us. Mother, father, teacher, cop, doctor, even streetsweeper, and the like, this is what heroes look like here in the Philippines and we’ve got a lot of them. Another well-known
3. hero lies in the image of Overseas Filipino Worker’s. In the movie, portrays a life of George Bustamante (Joem Bascon) , an OFW in Japan that strives to find a decent job in relation to Engineering. But all of a sudden, turns out wrong when Roger Grace (Jun Sabayton) offers him a job to defend the planet Earth; or to be a stunt-double for Blue Force of the Force Five. Will he risk his life to fight evil cardboard monsters that lurks in the deeper realms of Earth?
I was ask to give at least three scenes in the movie and identify what theory suits best on the particular scene. The first theory was Interpersonal Deception Theory, a theory in which the sender manipulate messages so as to be untruthful, which may cause them apprehension concerning their false communication being detected. The closest scene to the said theory is when George hide his true job in Japan in shame to his wife and the family of his wife here in the Philippines, just because they all know that he is an Engineer graduate and they expect that he will find an Engineering related job. Whenever George is asked by his wife Juniper (Dimples Romana), he will surely answer that he found a decent job in Japan. Another theory is Uncertainty Reduction Theory, interactions between strangers characterized by information seeking in order to reduce uncertainty. I’ve considered two Axioms in the scene. Axiom 1 and 2. Axiom 1 is verbal communication and Axiom 2 is the nonverbal warmth. It is when Ayumi baked bread and gave it to George with a letter (nonverbal warmth) and when Ayumi and George talked and be able to get-to-know each other (verbal communication). It is done to reduce any uncertainty on the said strangers. And lastly we have Elaboration Likelihood Model, divided into Central Route and Peripheral Route. Central route is concerned in thinking logically and scrutinizing every details before making decisions while peripheral route is concerned in thinking fast and having a quick and abrupt decisions. The C.R shows when George having a lot of thinking whether he will take the job offered by Roger or he will refuse to take it just because of shame. While P.R shows when Roger said that he decided to go in Japan just because he doesn’t want to took care of his grandmother and now he misses her a lot. With an abrupt and quick decisions, comes after disappointments.
Woman on the Ruins
A very blast movie directed by Keith Sicat, starring Alessandra de Rossi, Art Acuna, and Peque Gallaga. A story of a woman held as a prisoner of her own past on an unknown island where she departed. At first I thought it was a horror movie but then Mr. Sicat it was just a post- apocalyptic movie made by his imagination. The time was after the World War II, if I’m not mistaken. And the movie rotates on lust, lone, and salvation. The first theory is the Social Penetration Theory, it is between Maria and Sabel. Strangers at first but the more Sabel joins Maria while gathering woods to make coals or even there while Maria is experiencing agony from Pasyon’s devilish acts, the more Maria understand and consider Sabel to be her sister. The next theory is the Uncertainty Reduction Theory, this theory will came along with the Social Penetration Theory. Because the more we reduce uncertainty from a person, the more we penetrate to their deepest thoughts but it is unless the sender or the receiver make a move or agreed to step up on the said theory to another. So, in the movie, the scene where Sabel
4. approaches Maria when she first came on their island shows a great example of the theory. And lastly, Cognitive Dissonance. We all know that Sabel secretly in love with Pasyon. But when Maria came, then it all starts to destroy. Sabel has her choice whether she pursue her love for Pasyon, or accept the fact that Pasyon now has his wife. She chooses to accept the fact, she lives with it. And finally, accepted that Pasyon is already tied in a commitment, and he is deeply in love with Maria. And she respects Maria as her older sister. So she just let things be. The way Sabel accepted her decision, whether she is so in doubt, shows the Cognitive Dissonance Theory.
2.)
Lust vs. Purity
Betrayal vs. Unity
Filipino vs. Filipino
Turning our back against our very own? Ashamed by our dark complexion? Ashamed by being known as a slave? Ashamed to be called an Indio? Or worst, ashamed by being called as a Filipino? If that's the case then get lost, forever. Hide from the underpants of your mother might as well, get back to where you once belong, from her womb. Why? You don't have to be ashamed. We are all Filipino. Ilustrado's may call us, low-level man. Spaniards can call us, slaves. Modern people from some other country can call us, social worker. But, we'll all remain Filipino. Runs from our veins, and rooted from our ancestors. Knowledge with any value cannot be given as simple as getting what you want, it must be trickled with all blood-and-sweat, or with hardwork. And hardwork is the specialty of the Filipinos. Skin dried by the morning sun. All day working. All day striving. Blood-and-sweat. And no wonder, we've reached the knowledge we deserved. That is the message the movie 'Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon?' portray. You've already reached the top, yes. But staying what you are is the hardest point. Some boast, some left, and some forget about where they came from. Once quoted 'Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, di makakarating sa paroroonan'. You know why some characters in the movie died? Its funny. There's a scene there, when a Filipino in the bar where shot dead by a fellow Filipino which is a Spaniard wanna-be. Just because the spaniard wanna-be where angry by the 'sermon' of the Filipino that states why is he turning his back from his motherland. That person is the true Filipino but then, he's dead.
The movie did show a great flashback and make a great realization on the audiences' mind's. The antagonist Nicholas Ocampo (Christoper De Leon) quoted "We are Filipino". When we are on that situation, where our necks are being held by our oppressors, and our freedom are being caged this is where Filipino's must withstand. This is where Filipino's unite theirselves against Spaniards. But, what is this that some of them, fought WITH the Spaniards? Together
5. with the ones who degrade many Filipino's, who slave many Filipino's and who slay many Filipino's? Is this now a battle between Filipino vs. Filipino? Are we battling our own country?
The theory the movie show is clearly Interpersonal Deception Theory. It rotates on many deceptions, and secrecies. From Diding, how she uses her looks on every Spaniards and be able to escape from further punishment. How she deceives Kulas from falling in love with her, but then just fell in love with Kulas' lawyer. And Kulas' lawyer which is portrayed by Eddie Garcia, which is a very typical deceiver by showing adultery. And a lot of deceptions that spices up the film.
