Essay on A Study of Perspectives
A Study of Perspectives
Livingston's documentary Paris is Burning inspired an awareness of being that I had not previously experienced. The film urges the spectator to
reevaluate not only one's breadth of knowledge of the black gay culture in the 80's, but also the perspectives from which one views the film.
Personally speaking, the easiest evaluation of the latter topic would be the perspective of a privileged white straight female born into a sheltered and
socially traditional household. This background would thus color my reaction to the film: one of intense sadness for the featured interviewees who
yearned for an existence which was mostly unobtainable except in the case of extreme sacrifice and typically led to social ostracizing ... Show more

This new found perspective, achieved during class discussions and readings, was the finale of the topic for me until I checked my mailbox after class
the following day.
In my mailbox was an honor code abstract detailing a case brought before the council in previous months. My first thought when carrying the
abstract home with me was curiosity at what felt and looked to be a massive case summery of around 30 pages. I settled down to read it. The case
abstract dealt with an occurrence two semesters ago during a Halloween dance on Bryn Mawr's campus. Two Haverford male students attended the
Hallween party at Rhoads dressed as "two specific female Black popstars. They had painted themselves brown and attached prosthetic breasts and
buttocks to their bodies." (The Muppets abstract, pg. 1) The case abstract is incredibly detailed in documenting all parties' statements and reactions.
After the Halloween party where they wore their costumes the entire night the two males felt necessary to write an explanation to the community after
hearing some rumblings about their costume from friends and strangers alike. They explained that they had no intention on offending anyone in the
community, but had simply chosen the costumes because of its ridiculous nature. The abstract explains, "[Bert said] they saw white plastic breasts and
considered dressing as topless women. Then they saw the black breasts and butts and decided

Gender Trouble in Paris Essay
In Gender Trouble, Judith Butler discusses complications with constructions of inner and outer worlds of the body. She argues that "internalization of
gender", as common linguistics describes it, is a part of the heterosexual hegemonic binary of gender conformity which distinguishes inner and outer
worlds. Gender, in the commonly accepted model, is innate and through a process of bringing out the inner gender is expressed. Butler proposes,
instead, that "the gendered body is performative" and "has no ontological status apart from the various acts which constitute its reality" (173). Thus,
gender does not exist within a person, a part of the body itself, but is a performance constructed through many displays. Gender is not explicitly ... Show

Dorian Corey, a character name which gestures toward luxurious extravagance and beauty if named for Oscar Wilde's A Picture of Dorian Gray, spends
all of Paris is Burning either in preparation for a ball or framed by her trophies cast in a rich red–orange artificial light, except for when she first makes
her grand appearance on film. Her introduction begins before she is even visible. She says, "Liz Taylor is famous. So is Pepper Labeija. In a sense so
am I" (9:48) alongside a track of music which fades in and out as she speaks non–diagetically over a clip of Pepper Labeija voguing at a ball. This
serves as a transition cut to a medium shot of Dorian Corey, though the viewer is yet unaware who this is, walking at a ball wearing a thick boa of
feathers, a v–neck black sequin dress, and a horseback riding–style or old military helmet–style black hat with a sequined loose chinstrap and a back
drop of the American Flag. Dorian's clothes are loud, though Dorian performs smooth, comfortable, and quiet movements with waves of her wrists and
a slow, gentle walk. She is a spectacle with arms wide–open.
The non–diagetic voice becomes diagetic as the film cuts to a close–up of Dorian putting on make–up in what is made to seem like her homemade
dressing room. The closeness of the shot gives a sense of honesty. Her monotone voice feels subtly powerful. Her shoulders are relaxed and she moves
as though each item is exactly where she placed it. She

A Documentary Analysis Of The Documentary Paris Is Burning
The documentary, "Paris is Burning" follows individuals involved in New York's "ball culture" during the late '80's and early '90's, which
included Black, Latino, gay, and transgender individuals (Green, 1993). Many of the participants in the balls lived in "Houses" which serve not
only as a team for ball competitions, but also as a family (Green, 1993). These houses are a place of safety since many individuals are rejected by
their families of origin (Green, 1993). The subjects of the film face racism, homophobia, poverty, and AIDS (Green, 1993). One of the subjects of the
film, Angie Xtravaganza, died from AIDS related liver failure and another individual was murdered (Green, 1993). Some were thrown out of their

She had a degree in engineering, but her marriage of 25 years ended she earned a degree in counseling and works with individuals struggling with
issues around gender (Nelson, 2015). She described how she gradually would let "Grace" out in certain areas of her life (Nelson, 2015). Stevens said
that if you want to help individuals who are transitioning, simply ask them what you can do to support them (Nelson, 2015).
Chloe Hollett described her experience of being transgender and seeking employment (2017). She stated that many individuals who are transgender
have a difficult time finding employment, only 35% of individuals who are transgender report being employed full–time (Hollett, 2017). She applied
for jobs, even government positions with Democrats, often being interviewed, but was never offered employment (Hollett, 2017). Hollett and her wife
decided to move to Southern California where Hollett met California State Senator Ricardo Lara (Hollett, 2017). The Senator and Hollett worked
together on a bill to expand LGBTQ education in the workplace (Hollett, 2017).

Intertextualism In Paris Is Burning
In this essay I am discussing Jenny Livingston's 1991 film, Paris is Burning, in terms of genre, representation, gender, ideology, hegemony and
intertextuality. Paris is Burning is a documentary film following the lives of those involved in Drag–Ball culture, a subculture among some black and
Latino occupants of Harlem. The documentary provides its audience with an invitation to these balls, allowing us to attend and indeed judge ourselves,
the regimented competitions which involve the transformation of these men into different social roles of the everyday. The queens featured voluntarily
open up their lives to the camera, public, performative and private, Livingston represents their culture, thus representing herself through her handling of

(Pryluck, 1976, p.22) Marcus Ophuls, Oscar–winning documentary filmmaker, spoke of his own ethical position in regards to filming documentaries,
"As a film maker you're always...exploiting. It's part of modern life." He finds personal discomfort in knowing people's "great urge to communicate,
because of loneliness, because of insecurity, because of bottled up complexes," and they're exploited through documentary film, discussed by Pryluck,
(Pryluck, 1976, p.23) it could be said that the men featured in Paris is Burning are examples of those who wish to communicate their hopes and
dreams, Livingston facilitates their expression, although it is her who became a filmmaker after the success of Paris is Burning, "and that's
something I wasn't before," she characterises herself in Jesse Green's New York Times article. Livingston uses the footage of these individuals, it is
their faces, their thoughts expressed and consumed by the public, but according to Jesse Green, they "remain[ed], at best, exactly where they were
when filmed." Although, it can be argued that Livingston exploits her own status and self as a wealthy white woman in order to give these men a
voice, which seems to be what she's claiming, "so I have the ability to write those grants and push my little body through whatever door I need to get
it through... If [the queens] wanted to make a film about themselves, they would not be able," in Green's article, discussed by Harper. ([Green, 11]

Analysis Of The Movie ' Paris Is Burning '
Profiling has always been in our society, in the United States and all around the world. Some based more on racial characteristics and sexual
orientation, rather than social status and intellectual abilities. During the past years, it has become more than frequent the cases of police brutality, in
most occasions where cops end up abusing their authority and force by hurting and murdering Africa American civilians by the simple assumption
that because their skin is dark they represent a threat and have no good intentions. These occurrences seem like won't have a stop until the people
making these mistakes end up with repercussions for their actions. Also, another flaw in our society are stereotypes that people use judging people
by ethnicity and how they look , and as much as we try to act as if these things don't exist or are rarely happening, it is something that we cannot hide
and take part of our lives on a daily basis. The movie "Paris is Burning" is a good foundation to this argument because the characters face many
adversities for considering themselves of a different gender, and being constantly put down and told that they're not something that they feel like they
really are. This is what the term "double consciousness" by W.E.B Dubois means, how people throughout history born in the United States into a
non–white family with every right as any other American, feels like a complete stranger oppressed by others because they don't get the same equality
and treatment as

Examples Of Paris In The Odyssey
Homer's Heroes Why is a person a hero? Is it because of their bravery? Is it because of their intelligence? Or are they just born to be a hero? A hero is a
person who is noted for their courageous acts or noble character. Two great heroes in literature are Homer's Odysseus and Paris in The Iliad and The
Odyssey. However, Odysseus is a much better hero. It is true, Paris is definitely a hero for several reasons due to being smart, brave, and cunning, but
not nearly to the extent that Odysseus is. To begin, Paris is smart. He is intelligent because he knows his strengths and weaknesses in battle, using a
bow instead of fighting hand to hand (Homer). One is right to think that he is smart, but not in a positive way. In addition, Paris is ... Show more content

To start, Odysseus is smarter. In the text, Odysseus intelligently clogs his crew's ears with wax and ties himself to the mast pole when he passes the
sirens (Homer 46–47). This is one example on how he is smart because if he didn't do it, they would crash on the rocks by the evil Sirens and drown.
That is smarter than Paris knowing what he is good and bad at. Next, Odysseus is very brave. According to the text, "I gave the word "Now!"and
my men drove the stake down into the monster's single eye, while I hung from the top to give if the greater force" (Homer 27). Like Achilles, This
shows unbelievable bravery because he and his crew are stabbing a hot, burning stake with him hanging on top into the man eating Cyclops's eye to
save him and his crew. That is much braver and heroic than Paris shooting an arrow at Achilles. Last of all, Odysseus is very cunning. In the
Odyssey, when he was asked his name by the Cyclops, he says that it was Noman instead of Odysseus so that when he blinded him, the other
Cyclopes would think he was crazy (Homer 26). This shows that Odysseus remains a cunning "sly old fox" ,as Athena called him, because he tricked
the Cyclops which is more cunning than hiding and then shooting people with arrows like Paris did. In summation, Odysseus is an amazing

COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Ava Morrow
History 3220
The United States in the 20th Century
November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid–1980's, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of
AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries "Paris Is Burning" and "How to Survive a Plague" . Both
films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues
they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance
or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles.
The movie "Paris Is Burning" is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the African–American and Latino gay and transgender
communities of the ball culture of New York in the mid–to–late 1980's. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub–culture of LGBT
people who "walk" or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously–arranged competitions in which
participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their
dancing ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this drag scene. The film shows
people of different gender identities and their varied methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty,
and homophobia.
"How to Survive a Plague" is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups.
ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS–victims. The film used
archived footage of news coverage, interviews, protests, meetings, and conferences to chronicle the struggles of AIDS activists from the start of the HIV
/AIDS epidemic in New York City. It focused on the efforts of these activists to obtain meaningful responses from medical

Film, Paris, Burning, And The Subculture Of Black And...
The 1990s documentary film, Paris is Burning, was significant because it was one of the first major productions that brought national visibility to the
LGBTQ community and the subculture of black and Latina/os who participated in ballroom performances. This seemingly new phenomenon
incorporated dissing or "throwing shade," referred to as voguing, in New York City during the 1980s, and mainly consisted of poor, people of color.
These performative shows attempted to challenge and imitate dominant, white heteronormativity by role playing socially powerful categories like
business executives and students, that poor, gay people of color are often denied opportunistic access to. Intersections of class highlight the devastating
and somber effects... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These physical expressions through "processes of non–traditional literacy production, gender/race/sexuality articulation," is presented in ways that
outside of these spaces, would be "definitionally obscene," much like the harassment and violence that transgender and gay individuals, along with drag
queens, often encountered in 1980s hegemonic spaces (Gregory 28). "The irony is that the very real experience of difference, the heightened awareness
that it brings, should help to create a disguise so immaculate that nothing remains but the in–joke of one 's private knowledge," proving that successful
gender performances are not innate nor natural, arguments that 1980s heteronormativity argued to justify oppressive power hierarchies (Hentzi 36).
These performances exposed the truth of outside society's discomfort and defensiveness of their beloved and seemingly meaningful gender, race,
sexual, and class boundaries. This is because "if men can be women, blacks can be white, the poor can be rich, and gays or lesbians can be straight
(and vice versa in each of these examples), then the necessity and inevitability of these boundaries become suspect," and these boundaries can indeed be
crossed and ceased (Schacht 148). 1980s balls ultimately could prove that "hierarchical borders that previously demarcated superiority and
subordination would lose their omnipotent meaning" and these

Is Paris Burning Film Analysis
As I read the reading assignment and watched the film, I realized I could relate these two sources. First of all, the House(Ballroom) represents Black
masculinity within femininity and also culture of Black drag queens who are frequently socially shunned performers compete in elaborate balls to
support/comfort each other. So, I believe the documentary, "Paris Burning" by Jennie Livingston is very similar but different at the same time of the
book 'Is Paris Burning" by Bell Hooks. The author's argument can be related to the film in ways of both the book and the documentary spotlights on
Black gay(drag queens) living in NYC. Hooks also articulates the Livingston's depiction of drag queens and drag balls was a spectacle or a joke and

She also criticizes about the film as saying it is only showing the white privilege(I believe the director was White woman). They both touch the issues
of racism, poverty, and class. The author also points out that drag queens have always been looked down upon. You can also watch interview with the
renowned drag queens, such as housemother Pepper Labeija and Willi Ninja in the film. While I was reading the book and watching the film, I was
wondering about the different aspects if the documentary focused on White gay(drag queens) since Black Trans are the most discriminated in the world.
The author also relates Black gay drag queens to Black comedians in some ways. Most successful Black comedians at least dress up in drag in white
society and the author expresses some concerns that this can be disempowering to Black women. One of the author's criticisms of the documentary
was that what viewers constantly hear and see is not drag queens are not dressing up like a woman for entertaining or desire to become a real Black
woman, but their obsession/desire to achieve notions of the admired vision of

Paris Is Burning Gender Roles
Defining gender may not always be easy for one to define as it can be defined in several different ways. Understanding gender can be quite
complicated because of the fact that each person has a different perspective of gender. Gender is defined as a personal conception of oneself. There
are two main categories of gender that everyone can agree on male and female. To be more specific these are called gender binary. There are also
categories outside of the gender binary including but not limited to genderqueer, agender and hija. Throughout the documentary Paris is burning by
Jennie Livingston as well as the responses to the film by bell hooks and Judith Butler, gender is explored and seen through the lenses of these authors
in numerous ways. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Judith butler focuses more so on gender, sex and sexuality, which presents a much harder in depth reading documentary. According to Bulter many
of the categories performed in the balls were more related to class than race. She also argues that humans are born for a purpose and that over time
people form their own identity. She disagrees that gender is something that you are born with. With that being said she claims that it is not a bad
thing to express your identify no matter what you presume yourself to be. She also mentions and argues that just because a person is imitating
another gender outside of the one they were born with does not necessarily mean society will become offended. This can be a form of a personal
identify choice that should not be taken as a offensive act. Butler believes that switch of gender may be because of a bad experience or a possibility of
past relationship which can also connect with

Paris Is Burning Analysis
Paris is Burning is a film directed by Jennie Livingston, and Livingston attempts to introduce/popularize the drag & ball culture to the world. In her
documentary, she explores underground drag queen bars where individuals go to escape the world and cross–dress down a runway, where they are
facing no judgment and receive a round of applause for their courage/act/costume. In Bell Hooks' commentary on this documentary, she dives into the
idea that being transgender is "always constructed in the patriarchal mindset as a loss" (Hooks 146). I think that Bell Hooks is undermining the
mindset of the "patriarchal" point of view. The year is currently 2017, and the rights that the LBGTQ community has earned/achieved in the last
hundred years is an accomplishment that I feel people like Books neglect.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that Hooks, while doing this unintentionally, she provides white people with pleasure by watching the movie and ridiculing it. Hooks goes
on to say that when she was watching the movie with, "a black woman friend, [they] were disturbed by the extent to which white folks around
[them] were "entertained" and "pleasured" by scenes we viewed as sad and at times tragic" (154). The "white folks" that were viewing this
documentary most likely do not identify with the LBGTQ community and were criticizing the attempts made by Livingston to bring to life the issues
with drag & ball culture. Had society not had been so cruel, and rather accepting, this wouldn't have to be a "secret" to the world. Instead, the people in
this documentary are allowing the camera to be their platform in which they display their struggles to the outside world. I see homophobia as a reason
why some members in the LBGTQ community feel outcasted or unwanted in the

has been affected by the devastating drought this year and so is Australia and Africa. Mexico has seen the strongest hurricane, hurricane patricia last

Three Types Of Violence
Three Types of Violence

wrote the novel to summarize all the greek myths into one book and she uses stories from, The Iliad and The Odyssey, both were written by Homer.

"He gave Aphrodite the golden apple. That was the Judgement of Paris, and everywhere as the reason the Trojan war was fought." pg. 186. The
reason many people blame the Trojan war on the Judgement of Paris is simple, he gave the apple to Aphrodite. Quick lesson about men, Paris was
given the choice between the world, the world and the ability to hold onto it, or one night with the most beautiful woman, Helen, and that's right, he
chose the woman. "Hera was determined that the war should not end until Troy was ruined." pg. 192 Mythology. Hera was so enraged that she
even states that she won't let the war stop until the city of Troy is ruined. Aphrodite was obviously on the side of the Trojans which didn't do much
good since Athena is the goddess of battle. With Athena and Hera's help there was no question from the start that Troy would fall. Clearly, you never
want to make a goddess angry or your city will be demolished. Helen and Athena were somewhat jealous that Aphrodite had been given the apple so,
they fought in a war on the opposite side as her and basically won without trying. Conflict among gods and goddesses is common in mythology just
because they don't always agree, one does something that the other one doesn't like, and so on. It's ironic that the way us mortals fight today resembles
the way that the gods fought in

Roman and Greek mythology describe the goddess in the same way. Beauty surrounds her. Without her, there is no joy or loveliness anywhere. In later

Cause And Effect Of Climate Change
Climate change has always been an environmental issue, however, recently climate change has also, become a prominent political issue. Despite
contrary belief, climate change and global warming are two different phenomena. Climate change pertains to the Earth's temperature, for example,
humidity, clouds, or even wind. While global warming solely pertains to the greenhouse gases distributed to the earth's atmosphere. One, cause of
climate change are the natural occurrences. Volcanic eruption disperses many greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; the gases lay as a layer instead of
submerging into the atmosphere (Global Warming and Climate Change). The second, cause of climate change is human faults. For example, burning
or producing fossil fuels from landfills or livestock. The effects of climate change are devastating. Starting with the temperature rising can cause
wildfire or droughts, moving to oceans, heating up causing hurricanes. Later, the drastic change in climate may result in the extinction of land and sea
life Many countries around the world see the destruction and are willing to make an effort to stop climate change. 195 countries came together for the
cause and created an Agreement known as the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is put in place to strengthen the global response to climate
change, however, the Trump administration feels the terms are not beneficial to the U.S.
Prior to the Paris Agreement, dating back to 1995, the amount of greenhouse gas released concerned many countries. For that reason, in 1995 many
countries came together in Kyoto,
Japan and negotiated the Kyoto Protocol treaty (Global Warming and Climate Change). The Kyoto Protocol treaty demanded that industrialized
countries reduce their greenhouse emissions by a definite percentage in the course of five years (Global Warming and Climate Change). This sounded
ideal to many countries, however, problems quickly arose with certain countries. The Kyoto Protocol treaty was mostly favored by developed countries.
But, the U.S felt it was unfair that China and India produced the most greenhouse gases but, were seen as undeveloped countries so, they were not
required to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Also, the U.S felt that

Gender Stereotypes In The Film Paris Is Burning By Jennie...
Jennie Livingston, director of the 1990 documentary film, Paris is Burning, challenges the public to revisit their judgments on race, gender, and
sexuality as she provocatively attempts to unravel the dynamic world of "ball culture" in New York City "and the African–American, Latino, gay, and
transgender communities involved in it" (Livingston). It was Livingston's investigation that affirmed the link I was uncovering between the gender
performance popularly described as drag and spirit possession. The act of men embodying women through physical appearances and gendered
behaviors, traces back to Ancient Rome and "classical Chinese theatre," where women were prohibited from performing on stage. In Native American
culture, cross–dressing "berdaches" – individuals, usually males, who assumed the gender identity and were granted the social status of the opposite
sex – were revered for their ability to view the world through a hybrid perspective constituted of both genders (Summers). There are a myriad of cases
throughout history and cross–culturally, of this gender performance denoted today as drag. The performers of these exotic acts have adopted the name
"Drag Queens" – with Drag referring to the corporeal transformation, "clothing more conventionally worn by the opposite sex, especially women 's
clothes worn by a man," and Queen representing the reclamation of a slur popularly used for gay men in the 18th century. Because of the
criminalization of queer culture, especially

Is Paris Burning Book Review
Dominique LaPierre's Is Paris Burning? argues that without the liberation of Paris, Hitler's plan would have been to leave Paris as a smoldering
city that nobody could return to. The process of liberating Paris from Germany was not a one man job and took multiple forces from the outside as
well as from within Paris. LaPierre informs the reader that upon further research into the subject of the liberation of Paris it took many different
people from many different parts of the world to get rid of the German forces that held the capital hostage. The historians and student researchers of
the world can use the information provided as a base knowledge to further our understanding of World War II. Through his use of others personal
narratives he is able to fully describe the events taking place before and after the liberation of Paris. Is Paris Burning? takes place before and during

And The Mountains Echoed Analysis
Selfless acts shape a person's morals and what they value, and such losses of what one once loved or desired, can change who a person is or who they
become. Surrendering important objects drives people to do what they once thought was unimaginable as they give up their futures and sometimes, a
part of who they are. In Khaled Hosseini's And the Mountains Echoed, characters Saboor, Parwana, and Pari exemplify the lengths one goes to protect
the people they love, revealing their shared values of family preservation. Saboor made one of the most difficult decisions a parent could be faced, and
eventually came to sacrifice one of his most cherished possessions, his 3–year–old daughter, Pari. He put Pari up for adoption, permanently cutting all

As Pari neared her time to attend college she recollected that "I could see the struggle in his face. And the fear too. Not just fear for me and what
might happen to me three thousand miles from home. But fear of me, of losing me" (383). Pari sacrificed her dream of going to art school in
Baltimore because of her acknowledgement of the pain her father went through when he lost his sister, and knew she could not put him through the
same pain. Abdullah's need for his daughter became even more apparent when his wife died of ovarian cancer and he developed dementia and so,
Pari became a caretaker, giving up her young years since she was all he had left. The values one possesses can be shown in the measure of one's
sacrifice and compassion for others. And the Mountains Echoed, demonstrated realistic and raw situations that were tied together by an intense
amount of genuine and permanent love. In the book, the characters' forfeits were bounded by obligation to the people they love since they all valued

Paris Is Burning Analysis
The film aimed to explore an underground queer space, the Harlem ball scene of the 1980s, in which predominantly black and Latinx queer people
caricatured gender by participating in elaborately orchestrated drag competitions (Livingston). In Paris Is Burning, Livingston intersperses testimony by
scene members about their subversive performances and their lives with videos of the performances of drag that take place within the scene. The
documentary was praised for being counter–hegemonic as its subject matter sat at the intersection of queerness, race, and class, which had not been
showcased in mainstream media prior to the movie's release. In 1992, the film was awarded the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary,
suggesting queer approval of Livingston's efforts ("Paris Is Burning – Awards"). In addition to praise, however, Livingston was criticized for her
voyeuristic exploitation of this particular queer space, in which she was an outsider, demonstrated in the production of her film. Since the release of
Paris Is Burning, many have come, credulously, to believe that both queer rights and queer representation in media have evolved in favor of queer
individuals: same–sex marriage became the lay of the land in 2015, Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed nearly seven years ago, and trans people are now
able to serve openly in the military ("LGBT"). Further, non–queer people claiming "wokeness" are becoming vested in queer issues, bringing them to

from a homophobic society. Paris is Burning shows the struggle of young gay adults in the world of 1980s New York City. This was a world where
homosexuality did not exist as a part of daily life, and as a result, many gay individuals were beaten and ridiculed for their sexuality. Due to the lack of
acceptance towards homosexuality, many parents disowned their children, forcing these teens out onto the street with nowhere else to stay. A specific
example arises in the documentary when a drag member interviews a thirteen–year–old and a fifteen–year–old as they walk the streets of New York
City at 2:30 in the morning. When asked where their mothers are, the one teen responds with, "I don't have a mother. . . she's gone. . . [my father's] gone

Gender Norms In The Film 'Paris Is Burning'
RuPaul claims in the above quote that everybody is performing, they are projecting an image in order to build a perceived persona about themselves
within society. But in order to be accepted in society one most perform in a way that fits societies gender constructions. This can be explained using
Butler's explanation of Gender performativity, the idea that we learn how to perform our gender. The effect this has on individuals that do not fit these
"gender norms" can be seen in the 1990 documentary film Paris is Burning (Paunparia: Paris is burning. 2012). This resembles Richard Dyer's star

Because of these homosexual's blood–related family can't guarantee them a sense of safety so they had to leave and find other ways to survive. These
homosexuals are troubled so they eventually have meet others who are experiencing the same situations, and slowly they have formed a subcultural
group called the "ball culture" – the house system or ballroom community to describe an underground LGBT subculture in the United States in which
people "walk" and compete for trophies and prizes at events known as balls. In the movie Paris is Burning many of the like minded people were
gathered under one roof to start their newly formed underground activities. They immediately gain their acceptance by anyone who runs the houses,
people who are well respected within this community and have leadership skills to provide some sense of security to those who are lost or pushed
to the edge. In this movie people who compete for trophies in the ball cultural often consider others as brothers, sisters, or even mothers because they
have formed a strong connection due to their similar background and stories. These houses led by "mothers", providing guidance and support for their

Although the common race we see in the film in African American we also see other different races such as, White's and Latino's. Therefore, I will

It shows a variety of contestants showing of their looks for the crowd. Some do a regular runway walk while others improvise their moves based on
the categories they choose to model for. They are judge based on uniqueness, beauty and how they present themselves in the competition. We see many

Paris Is Burning Essay
Paris is Burning is a documentary about the 'ballroom culture' of LGBT and black cultures. It was shot in the mid–80s in New York, but it was released
1990. Through the film and the characters, many aspects of this culture are explored. Things like 'realness', 'balls', and the different concept of
'family' that the members of this community have, allows us to see and learn more about the drag community and what is like to see the world
through their eyes. Besides all of these aspects, the film main focus is gender identity, theme that has also bring about many opinions about what
gender is and what does it mean to be a woman. Some of the questions that the film has raised are if to be a woman is to be born like one or is just to

They have various categories and judges that give each contestant a qualification according to how well they are able to fulfil the criteria requested to
win the ball. Among the criteria, the main one is to 'serve realness'. For the theorist Judith Butler (1993), the realness is, indeed, the capacity of doing a
good personification of your female counterpart. However, the problem with realness is that it creates boundaries within itself. It ends up bringing
standards that strengthen the idea of realness, becoming something unachievable. This means that for Butler, the realness is like the perfect image that
everyone wants to fit in, but because it is idealised it becomes something too ideal to

and black LGBTQ people. People from the outside world came to know about this scene through researchers and journalist who were not members of
this community. The coverage of this community focused on dance formVogueand it had strong engagement with the movement against racism,
homophobia, transphobia, cultural exploitation and the barrier to healthcare (Valenti, 1989). According to some researcher, the Ballroom Scene started
as common occasion dubbed cabaret in where American menfolk in women attires came to entertain the upper and middle–class audiences. This was a
clandestine activity and the member of the LGBT community came to participate in the competition for recreation. Members of this community
formed a team or house. A house member who offer care and protection to the members when need be. Ideally, members of these houses came from
family backgrounds which did not support the activities of the LBGT community. The US ballroom served as a home for escapees from reality and
they acted as comfort zone where people could seek acceptance for whoever they wanted to be. Wealth, glamour and status are important factors in
Ballroom culture. Different houses organized event which were referred to as balls and the houses could meet and compete against each other in

its various participants.

condescends by simultaneously dismissing any agency or valid desire of the stars themselves. Not only does Livingston provide them this particular

Essay On Art In Ww2
Art in WWII World War II was a war that was forever etched in history as a result of it destruction and overwhelming body count. But who would
have thought that this war would have found a way to impact art before it's time. Before Hitler rose to power, he used the civil war in Spain around
1936 as his personal field test. In response, arts took to their trade to cope with their frustration and express their opinions. Then as war was on the
verge of beginning, Hitler stole modern art from Jewish artists and put them in his own show. His show was titled "Degenerate Art," and it portrayed
the artist as demented people who were a hindrance to society. He felt sane people were incapable of producing such abstract art. He went on to

Hitler supported Franco but artist like Picasso and Dahli supported the republicans. Then in 1937 a small city in Spain named Guernica was
bombed and it caused it stir amongst artists. As a result of the bombing Picasso created his oil painting, Guernica, in 1937. This painting was a
representation of what Picasso was probably reading in the newspaper while in Paris. Its monochromatic, black and white color scheme can be
compared to a newspaper. The viewer can read the painter from left to right or vice versa. The painting uses symbolism like the bull to represent
Spain and the horse falling apart represents dismemberment. Picasso depicts the horrors of the event as people flee from a burning building and a
mother holding on to her dead child screams in agony. What made this piece important was Piccaso's use of his cubist style to voice his political
opinion. He made it clear which side he was on and the discontent he held for the misfortune his home faced. The painting was put on tour as a
fundraising event that only charged a pair of boots for entry. These boots were then sent to republican soldiers. This was something Pablo Picasso had

Romeo And Juliet Research Paper
Parents usually protect us and guide us in the right direction, however in Romeo and Juliet's case they were the catalyst that set into motion the
sequence of events that caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The feud between the Montagues and Capulets, Lord Capulet's forcing Juliet to wed
Paris, and his haste to finalize it, had significant repercussions. Romeo and Juliet's parents are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. First, the
feud caused Romeo and Juliet to live in fear of what their parents might think of their marriage. This is shown when Juliet says, "Prodigious birth of
love is to me,/ That I must love a loathed enemy." (I.v.140–141) She is saying that it is so cruel of love to have her fall for Romeo, who is a Montague.

This is shown when he says, "For this alliance may so happy prove/To turn your households' rancor to pure love." (2.iii.91–92) If there wasn't a feud,
then Friar Lawrence would not help Juliet fake her death. The feud caused Friar Lawrence to help Juliet fake her death, which ironically lead to her
real death when she realized that Romeo had killed himself. Finally, Lord Capulet moved the wedding between Juliet and Paris to an earlier date. He
says, "Send for the county. Go tell him of this./ I'll have this knot tied up tomorrow morning." (IV.ii.25
–26) This caused Juliet and Friar Lawrence's plan
to come into effect earlier. This resulted in Balthasar informing Romeo of Juliet's death before Friar John is able to explain the plan that Friar
Lawrence and Juliet had wrought. Lord Capulet moved up the wedding and caused Romeo to not know that Juliet faked her death, causing Romeo
to kill himself. In the end, the parents of Romeo and Juliet are to blame for the deaths of their own children. Their feud, forcing of Juliet to wed
Paris, and haste to bring this about caused Romeo and Juliet to perish. It was as if the parents of both families unwittingly left a cigar burning as they
went out fishing and came back to a heaping pile of ashes that once was what they called "daughter" and

The Film Paris Is Burning
What is intriguing about Paris is Burning, is that the documentary seems to utilize the drag–ball scene as a conduit with which to communicate a larger
message about economics and race. The men in the film are primarily gay men of color who all appear to be on the losing end of the economic
policies of the 1980s. Yet they all desperately want to be apart of the class that most benefited from said policies. The men appear to believe the only
way to full adjoin society is through wealth. The "balls" gives these men who are on the outskirts of society, a place to experience a kind of
metaphysical change, an environment where they can live out their fantasies. The film does not present drag queens as simply stereotypical

Butler's Conception Of Drag
Upon its release in 1990, Jennie Livingstone's documentary 'Paris is Burning' elicited both accolades and criticism from a number of renowned gender
theorists. Notably among them, philosopher Judith Butler and social activist bell hooks take oppositional stances on the film, with the former writing
in favour of the documentary, and the latter strongly criticizing it. In my discussion of these two theorists' positions, I will focus exclusively on how
each individual conceives of the performance of drag and how it was portrayed in the film. In regards to this issue, I am in concurrence with Judith
Butler's conception of drag, as I find hooks' argument to be overly simplistic and reductive. On the subject of drag as portrayed in 'Paris is Burning'
bell hooks and Judith Butler have divergent opinions. Operating at the nexus of gender and race, bell hooks argues that drag, in general, has been used
historically as a way for straight black men to gain power in the white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy by oppressing and ridiculing black women. She
extends this argument by evoking the writings of Marilyn Frye ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Cultural Identity Of The African American Community
The African American community has sat at the end of a discriminatory lens from the moment they set foot in the United States. For that reason, black
communities have undergone the process of community building to ensure that all members feel a sense of belonging.
Race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, poverty, andsexual orientation, all play a role in developing one's identity and more often than not, these multiple
identities intersect with blackness. Being that American society has deemed colored people and populations as minoritarian subjects, African diaspora
people can be seen making safe spaces for themselves to survive as individuals and as a part of communities.
Stuart Hall's Cultural Identity and Diaspora focuses on the current issues of identity, cultural practices and cultural representations. He analyses the
visual representations of Afro–Caribbean's and challenges the notions of identity from African and European places. Hall then goes on to explain how
Caribbean cinema has chosen to both, refute and embrace European influence. He presents two different forms of thinking about cultural identity. In
the first position, Hall defines 'cultural identity' in terms of one, shared culture, which people with a shared history and ancestry hold in common. The
first model uses "stable, unchanging and continuous frames of reference and meanings' to present the idea of shared culture, history, and ancestry
rooted beneath 'more superficial imposed 'selves'" (Hall, 223).

Why The Movie Paris Is Burning
In the movie "Paris is burning" they portrayed a certain concept of a "meaningful life", which was that "this is a white man's world". They portrayed
the ruling class as capitalist, patriarchal, and that being white is only meaningful life that there is. This idea of whiteness is shown throughout the
movie in scenes at the ball and on the streets. It is also heard in many conversations with participants, and many of those conversations reinforce
marginalized disenfranchised minority groups. As much as I really like this movie because I like the participants and it seemed fun, in many ways I
found it sad because none of it was real. They had great support for one another and were connected within the group but were so disconnected from
society.

Why Is Romeo And Juliet To Blame
Blame is the action of assigning responsibility for a fault or reason. Blame is often used as a system to shift the weight of an action form oneself to
another as to become inculpable. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet is shifted from one
person to another. With the consideration of the events that lead up to Romeo and Juliet's death, the deduction is made that the culpable factors for
their deaths are the circumstances surrounding Romeo and Juliet's love and the Capulet's along with the poor judgement on the part of Friar Laurence.
The ambience around Romeo and Juliet assisted in the calamity of their relationship. Juliet's father, Capulet, is hinted at being both verbally and
physically abusive towards Juliet. After the death of Tybalt, and Juliet's subsequent mourning, her father, Capulet, arranges a marriage between her and
the prince, Paris. Juliet, having already married Romeo, knew that she could not take part in this ordeal, therefore she expressed her distress with this
arrangement. Capulet viewed this as insubordination and continued to roar at Juliet and threaten to beat her if only it was not her wedding day soon.

Burning In Antarctica
Ever thought about how many fossil fuels we burn up in our lifetime? According to an article written by Justin Gillis, if we were to burn all the fossil
fuels it would heat the Earth enough to melt the ice sheet covering Antarctica. This would cause sea level to rise almost two–hundred feet. Scientists
have discovered that half of the burning will occur within the next thousand years. This would cause the oceans to rise ten times faster than they
already are and we would have to evacuate all coastal cities. The article states that nobody today or even their grandchildren would most likely live to
see this happen. For so long people around the world have realized how bad burning fossil fuels are, yet the government hasn't set any regulations...

The article says that the ice sheets respond very slowly to changes in climate that it would take longer than a century for any large scale melting to

going to melt so fast. Paleoclimatologist have said that Antarctica was once a lush green meadow of nothing but green vegetation and has been iced
over for the past 40 million years. So we should not be stirred because ocean rising has occurred in the past and that wasn't the last time it was going to
happen. The scientist say that if all the burning takes place it would heat Earth up by twenty degrees Fahrenheit. This would cause problems throughout
civilization such as heat stroke, food collapse and push toward mass extinction. In my opinion we need to cut down on fossil fuel burning because I do
not want to die and have a mass extinction. Even though I won't live I see it. It's still scary to think

then you are looked upon as an outsider. Living in today's society is a constant battle within oneself and each other. Beatings, rejections, ridicule,

Essay On A Study Of Perspectives

  • 1. Essay on A Study of Perspectives A Study of Perspectives Livingston's documentary Paris is Burning inspired an awareness of being that I had not previously experienced. The film urges the spectator to reevaluate not only one's breadth of knowledge of the black gay culture in the 80's, but also the perspectives from which one views the film. Personally speaking, the easiest evaluation of the latter topic would be the perspective of a privileged white straight female born into a sheltered and socially traditional household. This background would thus color my reaction to the film: one of intense sadness for the featured interviewees who yearned for an existence which was mostly unobtainable except in the case of extreme sacrifice and typically led to social ostracizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This new found perspective, achieved during class discussions and readings, was the finale of the topic for me until I checked my mailbox after class the following day. In my mailbox was an honor code abstract detailing a case brought before the council in previous months. My first thought when carrying the abstract home with me was curiosity at what felt and looked to be a massive case summery of around 30 pages. I settled down to read it. The case abstract dealt with an occurrence two semesters ago during a Halloween dance on Bryn Mawr's campus. Two Haverford male students attended the Hallween party at Rhoads dressed as "two specific female Black popstars. They had painted themselves brown and attached prosthetic breasts and buttocks to their bodies." (The Muppets abstract, pg. 1) The case abstract is incredibly detailed in documenting all parties' statements and reactions. After the Halloween party where they wore their costumes the entire night the two males felt necessary to write an explanation to the community after hearing some rumblings about their costume from friends and strangers alike. They explained that they had no intention on offending anyone in the community, but had simply chosen the costumes because of its ridiculous nature. The abstract explains, "[Bert said] they saw white plastic breasts and considered dressing as topless women. Then they saw the black breasts and butts and decided ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Gender Trouble in Paris Essay In Gender Trouble, Judith Butler discusses complications with constructions of inner and outer worlds of the body. She argues that "internalization of gender", as common linguistics describes it, is a part of the heterosexual hegemonic binary of gender conformity which distinguishes inner and outer worlds. Gender, in the commonly accepted model, is innate and through a process of bringing out the inner gender is expressed. Butler proposes, instead, that "the gendered body is performative" and "has no ontological status apart from the various acts which constitute its reality" (173). Thus, gender does not exist within a person, a part of the body itself, but is a performance constructed through many displays. Gender is not explicitly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dorian Corey, a character name which gestures toward luxurious extravagance and beauty if named for Oscar Wilde's A Picture of Dorian Gray, spends all of Paris is Burning either in preparation for a ball or framed by her trophies cast in a rich red–orange artificial light, except for when she first makes her grand appearance on film. Her introduction begins before she is even visible. She says, "Liz Taylor is famous. So is Pepper Labeija. In a sense so am I" (9:48) alongside a track of music which fades in and out as she speaks non–diagetically over a clip of Pepper Labeija voguing at a ball. This serves as a transition cut to a medium shot of Dorian Corey, though the viewer is yet unaware who this is, walking at a ball wearing a thick boa of feathers, a v–neck black sequin dress, and a horseback riding–style or old military helmet–style black hat with a sequined loose chinstrap and a back drop of the American Flag. Dorian's clothes are loud, though Dorian performs smooth, comfortable, and quiet movements with waves of her wrists and a slow, gentle walk. She is a spectacle with arms wide–open. The non–diagetic voice becomes diagetic as the film cuts to a close–up of Dorian putting on make–up in what is made to seem like her homemade dressing room. The closeness of the shot gives a sense of honesty. Her monotone voice feels subtly powerful. Her shoulders are relaxed and she moves as though each item is exactly where she placed it. She ... • 3. A Documentary Analysis Of The Documentary Paris Is Burning The documentary, "Paris is Burning" follows individuals involved in New York's "ball culture" during the late '80's and early '90's, which included Black, Latino, gay, and transgender individuals (Green, 1993). Many of the participants in the balls lived in "Houses" which serve not only as a team for ball competitions, but also as a family (Green, 1993). These houses are a place of safety since many individuals are rejected by their families of origin (Green, 1993). The subjects of the film face racism, homophobia, poverty, and AIDS (Green, 1993). One of the subjects of the film, Angie Xtravaganza, died from AIDS related liver failure and another individual was murdered (Green, 1993). Some were thrown out of their homes, engage in... She described how she gradually would let "Grace" out in certain areas of her life (Nelson, 2015). Stevens said that if you want to help individuals who are transitioning, simply ask them what you can do to support them (Nelson, 2015). Chloe Hollett described her experience of being transgender and seeking employment (2017). She stated that many individuals who are transgender have a difficult time finding employment, only 35% of individuals who are transgender report being employed full–time (Hollett, 2017). She applied for jobs, even government positions with Democrats, often being interviewed, but was never offered employment (Hollett, 2017). Hollett and her wife decided to move to Southern California where Hollett met California State Senator Ricardo Lara (Hollett, 2017). The Senator and Hollett worked together on a bill to expand LGBTQ education in the workplace (Hollett, 2017). • 4. Intertextualism In Paris Is Burning In this essay I am discussing Jenny Livingston's 1991 film, Paris is Burning, in terms of genre, representation, gender, ideology, hegemony and intertextuality. Paris is Burning is a documentary film following the lives of those involved in Drag–Ball culture, a subculture among some black and Latino occupants of Harlem. The documentary provides its audience with an invitation to these balls, allowing us to attend and indeed judge ourselves, the regimented competitions which involve the transformation of these men into different social roles of the everyday. The queens featured voluntarily open up their lives to the camera, public, performative and private, Livingston represents their culture, thus representing herself through her handling of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Pryluck, 1976, p.22) Marcus Ophuls, Oscar–winning documentary filmmaker, spoke of his own ethical position in regards to filming documentaries, "As a film maker you're always...exploiting. It's part of modern life." He finds personal discomfort in knowing people's "great urge to communicate, because of loneliness, because of insecurity, because of bottled up complexes," and they're exploited through documentary film, discussed by Pryluck, (Pryluck, 1976, p.23) it could be said that the men featured in Paris is Burning are examples of those who wish to communicate their hopes and dreams, Livingston facilitates their expression, although it is her who became a filmmaker after the success of Paris is Burning, "and that's something I wasn't before," she characterises herself in Jesse Green's New York Times article. Livingston uses the footage of these individuals, it is their faces, their thoughts expressed and consumed by the public, but according to Jesse Green, they "remain[ed], at best, exactly where they were when filmed." Although, it can be argued that Livingston exploits her own status and self as a wealthy white woman in order to give these men a voice, which seems to be what she's claiming, "so I have the ability to write those grants and push my little body through whatever door I need to get it through... If [the queens] wanted to make a film about themselves, they would not be able," in Green's article, discussed by Harper. ([Green, 11] Harper, 1994, p.98–102) She is responsible for the representation of the partaking queens and they have entrusted her with this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of The Movie ' Paris Is Burning ' Profiling has always been in our society, in the United States and all around the world. Some based more on racial characteristics and sexual orientation, rather than social status and intellectual abilities. During the past years, it has become more than frequent the cases of police brutality, in most occasions where cops end up abusing their authority and force by hurting and murdering Africa American civilians by the simple assumption that because their skin is dark they represent a threat and have no good intentions. These occurrences seem like won't have a stop until the people making these mistakes end up with repercussions for their actions. Also, another flaw in our society are stereotypes that people use judging people by ethnicity and how they look , and as much as we try to act as if these things don't exist or are rarely happening, it is something that we cannot hide and take part of our lives on a daily basis. The movie "Paris is Burning" is a good foundation to this argument because the characters face many adversities for considering themselves of a different gender, and being constantly put down and told that they're not something that they feel like they really are. This is what the term "double consciousness" by W.E.B Dubois means, how people throughout history born in the United States into a non–white family with every right as any other American, feels like a complete stranger oppressed by others because they don't get the same equality and treatment as ... • 6. Examples Of Paris In The Odyssey Homer's Heroes Why is a person a hero? Is it because of their bravery? Is it because of their intelligence? Or are they just born to be a hero? A hero is a person who is noted for their courageous acts or noble character. Two great heroes in literature are Homer's Odysseus and Paris in The Iliad and The Odyssey. However, Odysseus is a much better hero. It is true, Paris is definitely a hero for several reasons due to being smart, brave, and cunning, but not nearly to the extent that Odysseus is. To begin, Paris is smart. He is intelligent because he knows his strengths and weaknesses in battle, using a bow instead of fighting hand to hand (Homer). One is right to think that he is smart, but not in a positive way. In addition, Paris is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To start, Odysseus is smarter. In the text, Odysseus intelligently clogs his crew's ears with wax and ties himself to the mast pole when he passes the sirens (Homer 46–47). This is one example on how he is smart because if he didn't do it, they would crash on the rocks by the evil Sirens and drown. That is smarter than Paris knowing what he is good and bad at. Next, Odysseus is very brave. According to the text, "I gave the word "Now!"and my men drove the stake down into the monster's single eye, while I hung from the top to give if the greater force" (Homer 27). Like Achilles, This shows unbelievable bravery because he and his crew are stabbing a hot, burning stake with him hanging on top into the man eating Cyclops's eye to save him and his crew. That is much braver and heroic than Paris shooting an arrow at Achilles. Last of all, Odysseus is very cunning. In the Odyssey, when he was asked his name by the Cyclops, he says that it was Noman instead of Odysseus so that when he blinded him, the other Cyclopes would think he was crazy (Homer 26). This shows that Odysseus remains a cunning "sly old fox" ,as Athena called him, because he tricked the Cyclops which is more cunning than hiding and then shooting people with arrows like Paris did. In summation, Odysseus is an amazing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Due to all of Greece knowing of Xerxes invasion, they needed to put aside their rivalries toward one another, and so the cities all agreed to let the Spartans lead their army in battle. Greece giving 6,000 of their best, and with 300 Spartans lead by their king Leonidas. So they set to guard a gap between two large mountains of central Greece which was known as Thermopylae. • 8. Analysis Of Paris Is Burning COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE Ava Morrow History 3220 The United States in the 20th Century November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid–1980's, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries "Paris Is Burning" and "How to Survive a Plague" . Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles. The movie "Paris Is Burning" is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the African–American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the mid–to–late 1980's. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub–culture of LGBT people who "walk" or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously–arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and homophobia. "How to Survive a Plague" is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS–victims. The film used archived footage of news coverage, interviews, protests, meetings, and conferences to chronicle the struggles of AIDS activists from the start of the HIV /AIDS epidemic in New York City. It focused on the efforts of these activists to obtain meaningful responses from medical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Film, Paris, Burning, And The Subculture Of Black And... The 1990s documentary film, Paris is Burning, was significant because it was one of the first major productions that brought national visibility to the LGBTQ community and the subculture of black and Latina/os who participated in ballroom performances. This seemingly new phenomenon incorporated dissing or "throwing shade," referred to as voguing, in New York City during the 1980s, and mainly consisted of poor, people of color. These performative shows attempted to challenge and imitate dominant, white heteronormativity by role playing socially powerful categories like business executives and students, that poor, gay people of color are often denied opportunistic access to. Intersections of class highlight the devastating and somber effects... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These physical expressions through "processes of non–traditional literacy production, gender/race/sexuality articulation," is presented in ways that outside of these spaces, would be "definitionally obscene," much like the harassment and violence that transgender and gay individuals, along with drag queens, often encountered in 1980s hegemonic spaces (Gregory 28). "The irony is that the very real experience of difference, the heightened awareness that it brings, should help to create a disguise so immaculate that nothing remains but the in–joke of one 's private knowledge," proving that successful gender performances are not innate nor natural, arguments that 1980s heteronormativity argued to justify oppressive power hierarchies (Hentzi 36). These performances exposed the truth of outside society's discomfort and defensiveness of their beloved and seemingly meaningful gender, race, sexual, and class boundaries. This is because "if men can be women, blacks can be white, the poor can be rich, and gays or lesbians can be straight (and vice versa in each of these examples), then the necessity and inevitability of these boundaries become suspect," and these boundaries can indeed be crossed and ceased (Schacht 148). 1980s balls ultimately could prove that "hierarchical borders that previously demarcated superiority and subordination would lose their omnipotent meaning" and these ... • 10. Is Paris Burning Film Analysis As I read the reading assignment and watched the film, I realized I could relate these two sources. First of all, the House(Ballroom) represents Black masculinity within femininity and also culture of Black drag queens who are frequently socially shunned performers compete in elaborate balls to support/comfort each other. So, I believe the documentary, "Paris Burning" by Jennie Livingston is very similar but different at the same time of the book 'Is Paris Burning" by Bell Hooks. You can also watch interview with the renowned drag queens, such as housemother Pepper Labeija and Willi Ninja in the film. While I was reading the book and watching the film, I was wondering about the different aspects if the documentary focused on White gay(drag queens) since Black Trans are the most discriminated in the world. The author also relates Black gay drag queens to Black comedians in some ways. Most successful Black comedians at least dress up in drag in white society and the author expresses some concerns that this can be disempowering to Black women. One of the author's criticisms of the documentary was that what viewers constantly hear and see is not drag queens are not dressing up like a woman for entertaining or desire to become a real Black woman, but their obsession/desire to achieve notions of the admired vision of ... • 11. Paris Is Burning Gender Roles Defining gender may not always be easy for one to define as it can be defined in several different ways. Understanding gender can be quite complicated because of the fact that each person has a different perspective of gender. Gender is defined as a personal conception of oneself. There are two main categories of gender that everyone can agree on male and female. To be more specific these are called gender binary. There are also categories outside of the gender binary including but not limited to genderqueer, agender and hija. Throughout the documentary Paris is burning by Jennie Livingston as well as the responses to the film by bell hooks and Judith Butler, gender is explored and seen through the lenses of these authors in numerous ways. ... According to Bulter many of the categories performed in the balls were more related to class than race. She also argues that humans are born for a purpose and that over time people form their own identity. She disagrees that gender is something that you are born with. With that being said she claims that it is not a bad thing to express your identify no matter what you presume yourself to be. She also mentions and argues that just because a person is imitating another gender outside of the one they were born with does not necessarily mean society will become offended. This can be a form of a personal identify choice that should not be taken as a offensive act. In her documentary, she explores underground drag queen bars where individuals go to escape the world and cross–dress down a runway, where they are facing no judgment and receive a round of applause for their courage/act/costume. In Bell Hooks' commentary on this documentary, she dives into the idea that being transgender is "always constructed in the patriarchal mindset as a loss" (Hooks 146). The "white folks" that were viewing this documentary most likely do not identify with the LBGTQ community and were criticizing the attempts made by Livingston to bring to life the issues with drag & ball culture. Had society not had been so cruel, and rather accepting, this wouldn't have to be a "secret" to the world. In the Odyssey, when he was asked his name by the Cyclops, he says that it was Noman instead of Odysseus so that when he blinded him, the other Cyclopes would think he was crazy (Homer 26). • 17. Cause And Effect Of Climate Change Climate change has always been an environmental issue, however, recently climate change has also, become a prominent political issue. Despite contrary belief, climate change and global warming are two different phenomena. Climate change pertains to the Earth's temperature, for example, humidity, clouds, or even wind. While global warming solely pertains to the greenhouse gases distributed to the earth's atmosphere. One, cause of climate change are the natural occurrences. Volcanic eruption disperses many greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; the gases lay as a layer instead of submerging into the atmosphere (Global Warming and Climate Change). The second, cause of climate change is human faults. For example, burning or producing fossil fuels from landfills or livestock. The effects of climate change are devastating. Starting with the temperature rising can cause wildfire or droughts, moving to oceans, heating up causing hurricanes. Later, the drastic change in climate may result in the extinction of land and sea life Many countries around the world see the destruction and are willing to make an effort to stop climate change. 195 countries came together for the cause and created an Agreement known as the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is put in place to strengthen the global response to climate change, however, the Trump administration feels the terms are not beneficial to the U.S. Prior to the Paris Agreement, dating back to 1995, the amount of greenhouse gas released concerned many countries. For that reason, in 1995 many countries came together in Kyoto, Japan and negotiated the Kyoto Protocol treaty (Global Warming and Climate Change). The Kyoto Protocol treaty demanded that industrialized countries reduce their greenhouse emissions by a definite percentage in the course of five years (Global Warming and Climate Change). This sounded ideal to many countries, however, problems quickly arose with certain countries. The Kyoto Protocol treaty was mostly favored by developed countries. Jennie Livingston, director of the 1990 documentary film, Paris is Burning, challenges the public to revisit their judgments on race, gender, and sexuality as she provocatively attempts to unravel the dynamic world of "ball culture" in New York City "and the African–American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it" (Livingston). It was Livingston's investigation that affirmed the link I was uncovering between the gender performance popularly described as drag and spirit possession. The act of men embodying women through physical appearances and gendered behaviors, traces back to Ancient Rome and "classical Chinese theatre," where women were prohibited from performing on stage. In Native American culture, cross–dressing "berdaches" – individuals, usually males, who assumed the gender identity and were granted the social status of the opposite sex – were revered for their ability to view the world through a hybrid perspective constituted of both genders (Summers). There are a myriad of cases throughout history and cross–culturally, of this gender performance denoted today as drag. The performers of these exotic acts have adopted the name "Drag Queens" – with Drag referring to the corporeal transformation, "clothing more conventionally worn by the opposite sex, especially women 's clothes worn by a man," and Queen representing the reclamation of a slur popularly used for gay men in the 18th century. Paris Is Burning Analysis The film aimed to explore an underground queer space, the Harlem ball scene of the 1980s, in which predominantly black and Latinx queer people caricatured gender by participating in elaborately orchestrated drag competitions (Livingston). In Paris Is Burning, Livingston intersperses testimony by scene members about their subversive performances and their lives with videos of the performances of drag that take place within the scene. The documentary was praised for being counter–hegemonic as its subject matter sat at the intersection of queerness, race, and class, which had not been showcased in mainstream media prior to the movie's release. In 1992, the film was awarded the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary, suggesting queer approval of Livingston's efforts ("Paris Is Burning – Awards"). In addition to praise, however, Livingston was criticized for her voyeuristic exploitation of this particular queer space, in which she was an outsider, demonstrated in the production of her film. Since the release of Paris Is Burning, many have come, credulously, to believe that both queer rights and queer representation in media have evolved in favor of queer individuals: same–sex marriage became the lay of the land in 2015, Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed nearly seven years ago, and trans people are now able to serve openly in the military ("LGBT"). This painting was a representation of what Picasso was probably reading in the newspaper while in Paris. Its monochromatic, black and white color scheme can be compared to a newspaper. The viewer can read the painter from left to right or vice versa. The painting uses symbolism like the bull to represent Spain and the horse falling apart represents dismemberment. Picasso depicts the horrors of the event as people flee from a burning building and a mother holding on to her dead child screams in agony. What made this piece important was Piccaso's use of his cubist style to voice his political opinion. He made it clear which side he was on and the discontent he held for the misfortune his home faced. The painting was put on tour as a fundraising event that only charged a pair of boots for entry. These boots were then sent to republican soldiers. This was something Pablo Picasso had never done before making this work ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Romeo And Juliet Research Paper Parents usually protect us and guide us in the right direction, however in Romeo and Juliet's case they were the catalyst that set into motion the sequence of events that caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The feud between the Montagues and Capulets, Lord Capulet's forcing Juliet to wed Paris, and his haste to finalize it, had significant repercussions. Romeo and Juliet's parents are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. First, the feud caused Romeo and Juliet to live in fear of what their parents might think of their marriage. This is shown when Juliet says, "Prodigious birth of love is to me,/ That I must love a loathed enemy." (I.v.140–141) She is saying that it is so cruel of love to have her fall for Romeo, who is a Montague. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is shown when he says, "For this alliance may so happy prove/To turn your households' rancor to pure love." (2.iii.91–92) If there wasn't a feud, then Friar Lawrence would not help Juliet fake her death. The feud caused Friar Lawrence to help Juliet fake her death, which ironically lead to her real death when she realized that Romeo had killed himself. Finally, Lord Capulet moved the wedding between Juliet and Paris to an earlier date. He says, "Send for the county. Go tell him of this./ I'll have this knot tied up tomorrow morning." (IV.ii.25 –26) This caused Juliet and Friar Lawrence's plan to come into effect earlier. This resulted in Balthasar informing Romeo of Juliet's death before Friar John is able to explain the plan that Friar Lawrence and Juliet had wrought. Lord Capulet moved up the wedding and caused Romeo to not know that Juliet faked her death, causing Romeo to kill himself. In the end, the parents of Romeo and Juliet are to blame for the deaths of their own children. Their feud, forcing of Juliet to wed Paris, and haste to bring this about caused Romeo and Juliet to perish. It was as if the parents of both families unwittingly left a cigar burning as they went out fishing and came back to a heaping pile of ashes that once was what they called "daughter" and ... • 32. The Film Paris Is Burning What is intriguing about Paris is Burning, is that the documentary seems to utilize the drag–ball scene as a conduit with which to communicate a larger message about economics and race. The men in the film are primarily gay men of color who all appear to be on the losing end of the economic policies of the 1980s. Yet they all desperately want to be apart of the class that most benefited from said policies. The men appear to believe the only way to full adjoin society is through wealth. The "balls" gives these men who are on the outskirts of society, a place to experience a kind of metaphysical change, an environment where they can live out their fantasies. The film does not present drag queens as simply stereotypical cross–dressers, who poorly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Butler's Conception Of Drag Upon its release in 1990, Jennie Livingstone's documentary 'Paris is Burning' elicited both accolades and criticism from a number of renowned gender theorists. Notably among them, philosopher Judith Butler and social activist bell hooks take oppositional stances on the film, with the former writing in favour of the documentary, and the latter strongly criticizing it. In my discussion of these two theorists' positions, I will focus exclusively on how each individual conceives of the performance of drag and how it was portrayed in the film. In regards to this issue, I am in concurrence with Judith Butler's conception of drag, as I find hooks' argument to be overly simplistic and reductive. On the subject of drag as portrayed in 'Paris is Burning' bell hooks and Judith Butler have divergent opinions. Operating at the nexus of gender and race, bell hooks argues that drag, in general, has been used historically as a way for straight black men to gain power in the white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy by oppressing and ridiculing black women. She extends this argument by evoking the writings of Marilyn Frye ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. The Cultural Identity Of The African American Community The African American community has sat at the end of a discriminatory lens from the moment they set foot in the United States. For that reason, black communities have undergone the process of community building to ensure that all members feel a sense of belonging. Race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, poverty, andsexual orientation, all play a role in developing one's identity and more often than not, these multiple identities intersect with blackness. Being that American society has deemed colored people and populations as minoritarian subjects, African diaspora people can be seen making safe spaces for themselves to survive as individuals and as a part of communities. Stuart Hall's Cultural Identity and Diaspora focuses on the current issues of identity, cultural practices and cultural representations. He analyses the visual representations of Afro–Caribbean's and challenges the notions of identity from African and European places. Hall then goes on to explain how Caribbean cinema has chosen to both, refute and embrace European influence. He presents two different forms of thinking about cultural identity. In the first position, Hall defines 'cultural identity' in terms of one, shared culture, which people with a shared history and ancestry hold in common. The first model uses "stable, unchanging and continuous frames of reference and meanings' to present the idea of shared culture, history, and ancestry rooted beneath 'more superficial imposed 'selves'" (Hall, 223). ... • 35. Why The Movie Paris Is Burning In the movie "Paris is burning" they portrayed a certain concept of a "meaningful life", which was that "this is a white man's world". They portrayed the ruling class as capitalist, patriarchal, and that being white is only meaningful life that there is. This idea of whiteness is shown throughout the movie in scenes at the ball and on the streets. It is also heard in many conversations with participants, and many of those conversations reinforce marginalized disenfranchised minority groups. As much as I really like this movie because I like the participants and it seemed fun, in many ways I found it sad because none of it was real. They had great support for one another and were connected within the group but were so disconnected from society. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Why Is Romeo And Juliet To Blame Blame is the action of assigning responsibility for a fault or reason. Blame is often used as a system to shift the weight of an action form oneself to another as to become inculpable. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet is shifted from one person to another. With the consideration of the events that lead up to Romeo and Juliet's death, the deduction is made that the culpable factors for their deaths are the circumstances surrounding Romeo and Juliet's love and the Capulet's along with the poor judgement on the part of Friar Laurence. The ambience around Romeo and Juliet assisted in the calamity of their relationship. Juliet's father, Capulet, is hinted at being both verbally and physically abusive towards Juliet. After the death of Tybalt, and Juliet's subsequent mourning, her father, Capulet, arranges a marriage between her and the prince, Paris. Juliet, having already married Romeo, knew that she could not take part in this ordeal, therefore she expressed her distress with this arrangement. Capulet viewed this as insubordination and continued to roar at Juliet and threaten to beat her if only it was not her wedding day soon. This revelation about Juliet's family life,... • 37. Burning In Antarctica Ever thought about how many fossil fuels we burn up in our lifetime? According to an article written by Justin Gillis, if we were to burn all the fossil fuels it would heat the Earth enough to melt the ice sheet covering Antarctica. This would cause sea level to rise almost two–hundred feet. Scientists have discovered that half of the burning will occur within the next thousand years. This would cause the oceans to rise ten times faster than they already are and we would have to evacuate all coastal cities. The article states that nobody today or even their grandchildren would most likely live to see this happen. For so long people around the world have realized how bad burning fossil fuels are, yet the government hasn't set any regulations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article says that the ice sheets respond very slowly to changes in climate that it would take longer than a century for any large scale melting to begin. The ten scientists that have been studying the Earth's history are not to alarmed with the melting of Antarctica and nor are they surprised it is going to melt so fast. Paleoclimatologist have said that Antarctica was once a lush green meadow of nothing but green vegetation and has been iced over for the past 40 million years. So we should not be stirred because ocean rising has occurred in the past and that wasn't the last time it was going to happen. The scientist say that if all the burning takes place it would heat Earth up by twenty degrees Fahrenheit. This would cause problems throughout civilization such as heat stroke, food collapse and push toward mass extinction. In my opinion we need to cut down on fossil fuel burning because I do not want to die and have a mass extinction. Even though I won't live I see it. It's still scary to think ... • 38. Paris Is Burning Sociology The 1991 documentary Paris is Burning directed by Jennie Livingston shows an important aspect of the African–American and Latino LGBTQ community in New York City during the 1980's. The aspect that the film is centered around are the drag balls. The socially constructed norms of gender, race, and sexuality are all challenged by the people in the film and they make strong efforts to subvert the dominant cultural norms. In their own way they are both confirming and re–defying traditional conceptions of gender, race, and sexuality. To many in the community, the balls are empowering. The culturally dominant idea of gender is heavily questioned throughout the film. During these balls, some of the categories are judged based on "realness", which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Similarities Between Paris Burning And Tongues Untied Both films Paris is burning and Tongues Untied were two very touching and eye opening films. Paris is burning a film that depicts the struggles of being black and being gay in a society. As we know the stereotype of being black is a struggle that black male and female face every day and when we talk about gay its again a sticky topic to elaborate on because society is "supposed" to be a certain way and if you aren't following society's rules then you are looked upon as an outsider. Living in today's society is a constant battle within oneself and each other. Beatings, rejections, ridicule, threats and violence are daily struggles and realities that these men go through in order for them to pass as being a woman. Tongues Untied shows the same ...
