2. Research of York
For my research, I firstly decided to look into the statistics of the population of York. My target audience is
student age (16-24) so looking into the different popularity rates in York helped me gain a better idea as to the
ratio of my target audience age to the rest of the population. Looking into the statistics just also gave me a
general idea of the kind of people living in York and why the outcome is the way it is.
Website to find out statistics: http://worldpopulationreview.com/world-cities/york-population/
For the next part of my research I decided to find out some information about the different historic buildings and
locations in York. This was because I knew that I wanted my main focus to be on architecture in York for my
project so it was important that I gathered extra information and gain a bit more knowledge about my project.
I chose to research some of the most popular places
in York where it is more popular for students to visit.
I gathered information from the Minster Homepage
Website: https://yorkminster.org/
The website let me gather better ideas as to the
different events that take place in and around The
Minster.
One of Yorkâs most famous attractions is âThe
Shamblesâ. The Shambles is also a popular location
among Harry Potter fans as itâs where the Harry
Potter Shops are located, so I thought it would be
interesting to add this location into my booklet. I
visited a website called âDarwin Escapesâ where I
found out more information as to why Harry Potter is
associated with the Shambles which was very useful
for my research

potter-fans-need-to-visit-york/
3. Planning For a part of my planning I created a mind map so I
could section and separate my ideas. Creating
these kind of mind maps help me think more clearly
and gain a better idea of what I might include in my
work. I created this mind map on a website called
âbubble.usâ as it is a simple way to create a mind
map.
I chose to focus my booklet on architecture in York
as I want my final project to be about architecture in
Yorkshire, so this would be a good start into getting
some new inspiration and learning new techniques
for my FMP Year 2.
I also planned out some of the locations that I was
planning on visiting to take photos of. It helped me
plan out my booklet layout beforehand so I could
dedicate some of my pages to the locations I took
photos of.
Looking back at my finished work, I had used some
of the images I took from my different locations like
the York Minster and the Shambles.
I looked on some of the websites that were made
for the locations so I could find out information like
cost, travel, etc. The website I looked at for my
Minster visit was https://yorkminster.org/ which is a
a website dedicated to The Minster.
4. Cover Analysis and Comparison
Both covers show images of The Minster in
York. This is because The Minster is one of the
most popular attractions in York and itâs also
aesthetically pleasing to look at.
When I visited the Minster to take pictures of it,
I made sure I got an angle where the sky was
visible. This was because I know I wanted a
part of The Minster on the front cover so I
needed a clear space where I could add in the
header without it looking messy. This same
idea is used on the existing magazine cover
(the header is in the sky). It is quite difficult to
add in a header over buildings as it doesnât
make the text stand out well.
My favourite technique I used on my cover was
the mirror effect in the sky that you can see. I
didnât initially plan on using this effect however I
had discovered it in my experiments and
thought that this would look interesting in the
sky.
I added quite a lot of different adjustments to my Minster picture to make the original photo look more brighter and saturated.
Firstly I made the original photo a bit more brighter so the picture I took doesnât look dull. I then adjusted the saturation higher so
the colour intensity is increased, creating a more bright and full colour. I decreased the hue a small amount to give a pink tone to
the building. This effect makes the sunlight look more brighter and the pinker tones bring out brighter shades on parts of the
building that would have looked more brown and dull in the original image. I also sharpened the image to make the small
detailed edges stand out, so the image doesnât look as much out of focus and also makes the objects and detail stand out more
in the picture.

5. Comparisons
Existing page from âOnly In Yorkâ Magazine
My finished pages from my magazine
The existing magazine chose the colour theme of blue and white for their page, as you can see the text box colour whereas for my
page, I stuck to the colour theme of red as this is a colour used in the Harry Potter themes.
The page from the existing magazine has darker colours included in the page than my magazine. This is because I used the
colour red and light brown/orange colours in mine.
I like how in mine, I used different effects to make my pages stand out. For example, I used the smoke effect at the bottom of my
pages and I also used logos that I created. The existing magazine is a lot more simple in the way that the layout is just pictures
and text, however the layout is neat and clean, making is look visually pleasing. Some people may argue that my two pages arenât
visually pleasing when they are put together as the two images donât have to same background effect. My target audience for my
magazine were students so I wanted my pages to look more bright and fun to catch the eye. I prefer the effects I used on my own
pages as I feel the picture and the smoke effect is more visually appealing and interesting.
6. Comparisons
Existing booklet
My Minster Page Design
Both of these pages are dedicated to
The Minster in York. They both include
pictures of The Minster with a collage
of images which is what I like about
both of them. However there are a few
differences in both of these pages.
Firstly, my page design on the right
has a collage of the same image
merged into one to create triangle
effects. I prefer this layout the existing
page design as I feel my technique is a
bit more unique and appealing to the
eye.
I do like how the existing page on the
left, as there is a mixture of bright
colours shown. I think that the bright
colours make the page look more
visually appealing and interesting. To
improve this page I could have
possibly edited brighter colours into the
picture like purple or red instead of the
darker colours I used like brown and
grey.
Even though the colours arenât that bright, I still think they stand out quite well from looking at them. The fact I used these colours
to create borders for the page and the header makes the page look more imposing. I have more article text on my design when
the existing page looks more like a cover photo. My page is more focused on a specific area of The Minster so I like the fact I have
added in some factual information onto my page. On the existing page there is a big space in the middle that could have been
used for article text.
7. Comparisons
The existing page includes more
images of the area in and around
York, whereas my page is only
focused the Minster and whatâs
inside it. I think that I could have
added in some more pictures to
my page as I only added in a
couple of effects for my images.
Comparing the two pages, I think I
could have put my article text in
the top right and added another
photo technique in the bottom left
of my page. However, I do like the
techniques I used for my pictures,
especially the cube effect which is
eye catching for the audience.
The photos used on the existing
page are bright and colourful
which is appealing. I think I could
have added in some more pictures
on my page and create a more
brighter and vibrant page.

8. Time Management
I think that time management could have been handled a bit better on this project. I tried to complete
at least 2 pages per week during class time and I turned out quite well. I did want to initially have 8
finished pages by the end of the 4 weeks however I had completed 6 pages.
In some of my free time in between lessons I would use the library computers to edit my work,
however I could only do production work in college as I didnât have the resources I needed outside of
college, e.g. photoshop.
If I had more time to complete my work to the standard I wanted it to be, I would have chosen a new
technique like a painting or drawing effect and added an extra page to my booklet. This page could
have been relevant to The Minster or even the buildings in Yorkâs museum gardens as the are relevant
to Yorkâs architecture.
However, I am content with the work I had produced and I had followed through with most of my ideas
from the beginning.
