Target Audience:
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why
The denotation of the target audience is going to be 15-24 year
olds of both genders because the majority of music magazines are
attracting a male audience, according to MOJOs audience statistics
shows that 73.10% of their readership is male, so there needs to be
something for Both genders.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
The denotation of the socio-economic needs of the magazine is
going to be A-C1 because the majority of the audience of similar
magazines are in that category such as mojo which cover bands like
The Black Keys, Jack White and The Rolling Stones and much more.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of
needs
According to Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory the audience will be
able to “personally identify” with the cover star because it will be
something they can recognize and like.
These readers could be classified as ‘explorers’ (Maslow) as the
magazine will teach them something new about the sub-genre of
classic rock or about the bands, therefore ‘informing & educating’
(Katz) them in the process.
Stereotype(s):
15-24 year old males who where checkered shirts and jeans.
