2. Intertextuality Definition
• “The interrelationship between texts, especially works of literature; the way
that similar or related texts influence, reflect, or differ from each other”
3. Why use intertextuality
• Many different medias use intertextuality as it creates a sense of continuity
and reality in the texts. For example The Simpsons use intertextuality of
society to relate with the audience and perhaps create controversy around a
political topic. This makes the viewers entertained and this is one of the
reasons why The Simpsons have become one of the biggest cartoon
television programmes in both the UK and America
4. Intertextuality definition in music
• Intertextuality is the way in which one media text is referenced in another.
For example Eminem uses intertextuality in many of his music videos. For
example in his song “without me” the theme is superhero, which is a very
well-known theme to use for the viewers. This will then appeal to a wide
range of audiences. The audience can immediately detect that the video is
fiction based by the way he has named a television programme “The
Eminem Show” . At the start of the video there is a countdown which is also
intertextuality and this builds excitement and makes the audience intrigued
and making them to watch all of the video.
