Dark Castle Entertainment's Success With Horror Films
1. QUESTION 3
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
2. Dark Castle Entertainment
For my film I chose Dark Castle Entertainment. They
are considered a prestigious production company as
it’s a division of Silver Pictures, formally affiliated with
Warner Bros and now affiliated with Universal
Studios. This means that audiences would be
optimistic when seeing the film was produced by Dark
Castle Entertainment.
Dark Castle Entertainment have produced many
successful Horror Films. These included Orphan
(2009) which had a total box office of $78,337,373.
The film’s plot is described as: a husband and wife
who recently lost their baby adopt a nine year-old girl
who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be.
This therefore means this film is centred around a
young girl who could be described as the ‘antagonist’
which is very similar to my own film. By Orphan’s
success, it suggests to me that if audiences of Dark
Castle Entertainment were to watch my film, it would
also be successful.
3. Would your product offer them a way to
attract a different audience group?
Through researching Dark Castle Entertainment, I discovered that they have predominantly
distributed horror films, such as ‘House of Wax’ and ‘Gothika’, which tells me that audiences would
be familiar with their film company and trust it for horror films. Although my film doesn’t bridge a gap
in their portfolio, I know that my film is more likely to be successful being distributed by Dark Castle
Entertainment. I don’t necessarily think that my product would offer a way to attract a different
audience group, although I don’t think it’s vital to expand the audience as the concept behind my film
is already such a dominant and well-loved part of the horror genre. Although Orphan is of a similar
concept, it was produced in 2009 and a refreshed, more modern version would be both expected
and well-received.
4. EXAMPLES FROM MY FILM OPENING
Directly after my own film company
logo, the first thing the audience see is
the Warner Bros. Pictures logo. As they
are a division of Time Warner and one
of the ‘Big 6’ major American film
studios, the audience will trust this
movie and be inclined to carry on
watching.
Due to Dark Castle Entertainment
mostly distributing successful horror
films and being formally affiliated
with Warner Bros, putting their logo
at the beginning of my films means
my film is more likely to be a scary
and thrilling horror movie.
