Institutions high budget vs low budget
1. High Budget vs Low Budget
Institutions
High Budgeted film: Iron Man 3
Beau Allwood
Low budgeted film: Primer
2. The main institutions used for Iron Man 3 were ‘Walt Disney
Studios Motion Pictures’ and ‘Marvel Studios’. These two
institutions are based at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank,
California . The institution used by Primer was ‘ThinkFilm’.
This company was founded in 2001 and it had been a division
of David Bergstein’s Capitol Films since 2006. However on 5th
October 2010 ‘ThinkFilm’ were forced into chapter 11
bankruptcy.
3. Iron Man 3 had a budget of $200 million and this was
the 21st most expensive films ever to be made. Primer
had a budget of $7,000 and was one of the cheapest films
ever to be made.
4. Iron Man 3 grossed $409 million in North America and
$806.4 million in other countries for a worldwide total of
$1.2 billion.
Primer only grossed $424,760 worldwide.
5. ‘Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ and ‘Marvel
Studios’ are really well known as they are so successful
and are institutions for other big films.
However, the same cannot be said for ‘ThinkFilm’ as this
is very low budgeted institution so is therefore not
popular.
6. ‘Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ and ‘Marvel
Studios’ spend the majority of their funds on special
effects, big named actors, successful directors, well
known music industry's and expensive high level
technology for camera shots and props. The low
budgeted institution ‘ThinkFilm’ primarily base their
budget on trailer and promotion as they are such a small
company compared to the high budgeted institutions
that they need the advertisement to gain any interest.
7. All film institutions no matter how big or small their
budget will need to put money towards the
advertisement and trailer of the film they are promoting.
8. Walt Disney
1. Frozen
2. Marvel’s The Avengers
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans
Chest
4. Toy Story 3
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger
Tides
6. Alice in Wonderland
7. Iron Man 3
To name a few but these films are all
noteworthy as they breached the $1-billion-pound
mark. These were all so successful as
they focused their target audience across all
ages. Meaning, for example, Pirates of the
Caribbean this film is enjoyed by everyone
even though it’s an action film. There are
lots of funny scenes and having certain
actors like Johnny Depp you will already
know that it will be suitable for children as
well.
ThinkFilm
1. Keeping Mum
2. Born into Brothels
3. Off the Black
4. Loverboy
5. The King
6. The Walker
7. Shortbus
To name a few as well but these films were
not as successful as the company went
bankrupt in 2010. They also didn’t focus
their target audience on all ages apart from
‘Keeping Mum’. I have watched this film and
it is very entertaining and it is suitable for
all ages.
9. Comedy and Action are the main genres used by Walt Disney and Marvel.
These genres at their best will keep the audience intrigued throughout
the film. However, Walt Disney and Marvel, even though they are two of
the biggest institutions, would not be suitable institutions if you were
making a horror film as they purely and simply produce most of their
films for children.
ThinkFilm produce are a variety of genres, however, do not have the same
financial benefit like Walt Disney and Marvel so will most often be
rejected by big named actors. This is important if you want to make a big
selling film as you need the experience and the quality to produce such a
film.
10. Walt Disney and Marvel appeal to all audiences and that’s what I believe
makes them so successful. They produce every movie with the audience in
mind. For example, in Pirates of the Caribbean, it is very action based
meaning it is really meant for teens and above, but by adding in comedy it
then becomes available to young viewers as well, without losing its action
themed genre.
ThinkFilm primarily focuses on one genre and sticking with it throughout
the film, this therefore means that it cannot be a film which everyone will
enjoy, you either like it or you don’t. This is the reason why they are not so
successful because they do not vary their genres.
11. In my opinion I believe that Walt Disney and Marvel without a shadow of
a doubt outperform ThinkFilm as they have been running for longer, they
focus on trying to appeal to all audiences, they have a significantly better
financial state and they are overall much more successful.
