4. Conjunctions
“Conjunction is a word or words which
joins/connects together sentences ,and
sometimes words.”
Examples:
Ali and Ahmad are brothers.
He tried hard, but failed in the exam.
He was running because he was scared.
5. They are also use to make sentences more
compact i.e. to contract.
Like:
He is slow, but he is accurate.
OR
He is slow, but accurate.
7. Coordinating conjunctions
“ A coordinating conjunction joins together two
independent clauses .”
They mainly are : for, but, and, nor, or, yet ,also …
and comes between the clauses with a comma ( , )
Examples:
I drank some water, for I was thirsty.
Sun rises from the east and sets in the west.
I ran fast, yet I came last.
9. Subordination conjunctions
“ A subordinating conjunction joins a main clause to a
subordinating( dependent ) clause .”
They are after, because, if , that, before , when ,
where…..
and can come any where in the sentence.
Examples:
You will pass if you work hard.
Bob is absent because he is ill.
I waited for my friend until he came.
Since we had done our work, we decided to play.
10. THAN is also a subordinating conjunction
i.e.
I like you better than ( I like ) him.
his bark is worse than his bite ( is bad ).
He is taller than I ( am tall ).
11. Correlative conjunctions
“ Conjunctions which are used in pairs are known to be
correlative conjunction .”
Like
either…or, neither….nor, whether…or
Either take it or leave it.
Whether you are going with us or going home.
Though he is suffering, yet he does not complain.
12. Compound conjunctions
“ Compound expressions, a phrase or a group of words
which are used as conjunctions are known as
compound conjunctions.”
Like
He walks as though he is very lame.
He looks as if he wants to kill me.
We stayed awake so that we could finish work.
