1. Who would be the audience for your
media product?
Question 4
2. • In my pre-production I did research into the audience of a
horror film. I carried out a questionnaire and found out that
the majority of a horror film audience is aged 11-20. Horror
films are also a popular genre for couples to go watch, this
gives men the chance to show their bravery and how they can
protect their partner. It is also suggested men are more of a
suited audience as they watch horrors to prove that they are
fearless.
• Due to this age group, my target audience consisted highly of
adrenaline loving youngsters. They enjoy the adrenaline of
watching a horror, therefore it is likely they enjoy the
adrenaline rush theme parks give them. As a result, I feel it
would be suitable to advertise my film in a theme park to
draw in the right audience. For example, advertising it in
Thorpe Park on Fright Night would be perfect and market my
film very well.
3.
4. • I looked into the horror genre and found many video games have been
created from horror films. For example, Until Dawn (2015) had a video
game released along side the film. This tells me my young target audience
for my genre are also interested in video games. This research would help
me with the marketing of my films as I could also release a video game
with my film and engage a bigger audience by catching the video gamers
eye.
5.
6. • This tells me the horror genre ranked 7 in the box office in the past 20
years. It is quite popular as it released 447 horror films a total of
$8,654,519,660 has been generated at the box office. Horror has held a
competitive position in the table of the box office. When deciding the
genre of my film, I took into account the number of tickets sold within this
time period which was 1,364,702,270 showing that my film had the
potential to reach a large target audience.
7.
8. • These statistic tell me a lot about the success of horror films. The 4th table
shows the success of the 1975 horror film, Jaws. This film was very
effective and popular and was filled with mystery and suspense.
Therefore, I feel these two elements are key for a successful horror film.
• Overall this shows me horror films are highly competitive in the box office
and are doing well. They bring in a lot of money and are successful and
popular. Therefore I am optimistic my film could do well in the box office
with the right marketing and distribution.
9. How did you attract/address your
audience?
Question 5
10. • I attracted my audience by thinking through the audience
research I did in my pre-production. In my questionnaire I
included questions such as ‘what is it you like most about
horror films?’. I included questions like this to really find out
what was important in a horror film and to see what I should
include in my own.
• Looking at my questionnaire feedback, I can see a jump and
mystery is really important for a horror film, therefore I
decided to make a huge effort with these factors. I created
mystery through costumes, lighting and shadows. Throughout
my film, you don’t see my villain much, and you don’t see his
face at all till the jump scene. This makes the audience feel
fear of the unknown.
11. Feedback
• Considering my target audience, I showed my film to a group of 16/17 year
olds, mostly male who gave me a lot of feedback about how my film was. I
was credited on my use of costume and my audience really liked the mask
my villain wore.

• Ellie, age 17 said-
12. Feedback
• Also my audience gave me positive feedback about the hand held shots,
low lighting and the shadows which created mystery and fear. I am overall
very happy with the feedback from my viewers.
• Charlie, age 17 said-
• Sol, age 16 said-
13. Feedback
• Jade, age 16 said-
• The reason behind this, is that I changed setting so when the chase scene
ended, she would come out the woods close to the old building. During
the time I packed away, changed location and set up the equipment again,
I had lost a lot of time and the sun had set a lot further than I expected it
would. I was aware of my mistake before I started editing, therefore I
faded out the footage and music before it switched to the darker shot.
This created the effect that time had passed and I made an effort to cover
up my mistake.
