2. ROCK SOUND MAGAZINE
The first magazine I have looked at is Rock Sound, which is owned by sonic publishing which was released
in 1999.
Overall the magazine has 48,914 readers, there are 500,000 online users and 300,000 mobile and tablet
users. Within social media facebook has 358,000 likes, twitter has 214,000 followers, google+ has 82,000
instagram has 47,000 followers, youtube has 78,000 subscribers and tumblr has 50,000. Overall this adds up
to the total brand audience being 1,378,000 people.
Out of the audience they spend £564M per year on music, £611M per year on fashion with 50% being
musicians and 35% attend over 10 gigs per year.
3. SONIC PUBLISHING
Sonic publishing have also published DIY and The 405, along side Rock Sound. They have independent
magazines such as DIY, and then mainstream magazines such as Rock Sound.
5. NME MAGAZINE
The next magazine I looked at was NME, published by Time Inc. UK in 1968.
The paid circulation for NME is 15,830 (January – June 2014) with the unpaid circulation being 300,000
(2015). The readership is 325,000 with 74% of them being men and 26% of them being women. The median
age is 23 years old and 42% of the readers are students.
Lots of NME readers use their phones to read the magazine and they are more likely to convince family and
friends to read the magazine through the use of their phones. NME readers are obsessed with music and
rely on the editorial and ads to keep them up to date with new music. They’re also big film fans who tend to
buy a new DVD every month, which is higher than the national average.
6. TIME INC UK
Time inc UK is one of the largest branded media companies in the world, owned by Time Warner from
1990-2014. Magazine genes range from lifestyle and luxury targeting women, to specialist genres such as
sport, targeting men.
8. Q MAGAZINE
The next magazine I looked at is Q, published by Bauer Media Group in October 1986. The circulation is
52,781 from July to December in 2013.
The median age for a Q reader is 34, with 70% of them being in employment. With the ABC1 profile being
71.8%. There is a digital edition every month which brings music alive. Readers have access to interactive
galleries, videos and music links enabling them to listen as you read.
Q online is a blog full of new sounds and ideas with tracks of the day, interviews, playlists and analytical
pieces.
9. BAUER MEDIA GROUP
Bauer media is a large European-based media company which has 600 magazines, 400 digital products and
50 radio and TV stations around the world.
