The primary audience for the film is males and females aged 35-45. They likely work full-time and only have weekends off. They have disposable income from careers and want to see the film for nostalgic reasons, growing up with the original films. The secondary audience is teenage males and females. They have little spending money but time to see films at weekends and holidays from school. They are attracted by action scenes and new characters not tied to the original films. Both audiences are likely from the middle (C) to upper (A/B) social classes who can afford cinema trips.
1. Avatars
Primary audience
Age: 35-45 Gender: male Lifestyle: They will still be working full
time unless they are unable to work due to medical injuries or
disabilities making it impossible for them to work, they wonât
have that much free time, only have free time normally at
weekends. They might have some money to spend on going to
the cinema as they have most likely been working for the last 20
years. They will likely be in the C, B and a sections of the NRS
scale, this depending on what job they do and how good their job
is. According to BPI people aged 35-44 made up 22% of the people who watch the force
awakens at the cinema. And also 37% of the force Awakens audience being people from AB
social classes according to BPI. Probably interested in the filmbecause they grew up with
the film and want to learn more about the story and the trailers nostalgic nature probably
makes them want to watch the film as the original characters are in the filmand that will
excite them
Age: 35-45 Gender: Female Lifestyle: similar to the male equivalent they probably work full
time and donât have much time off depending on what job they have and most likely only
have the weekend off work meaning they donât have that much time to watch TV, go to the
cinema and other social things. They probably have a decent amount of money to spend as
like the male they have probably been working for a long time and probably have an
established job. They again could be in the A, B or C category on the NRS scale as again the
mainstream nature of star wars makes it appealing to people of all classed, but as the
statistics above show that 37% of People who saw the film where of a AB class this means
they are more likely to be in either the A or B section than the C section as people from the
A and B sections have more disposable income than other people. Similarly to the Male fan
their age they probably want to watch the film as they grew up with it and characters such
as Leia would appeal from the original films as she is a strong dominant and in knowing that
the new filmhas these characters probably interests them and makes them want to watch
the film.
Secondary audience
2. Avatars
Age: Teenager Gender: Male Lifestyle: They probably spend most
of their time at school and in the evenings they watch TV and
hang out with friends and at weekends they can visit the cinema
so by targeting the younger audience they can make a lot of
money as a lot of children have the weekends off and therefore
can go to the cinema at the weekend. They probably have little
spending power as the majority of them wonât have jobs and they
probably get money from their parents for doing chores which
they could spend at the cinema. They are probably in the E or C section as a lot of them will
be unemployed and if they are employed they are probably of a low skill level. They are
probably attracted to the film as the trailer is full of action and explosions that will entertain
the newer and younger fans and new characters such as Rey and Finn would appeal to them
as they can follow their story from the beginning and donât have to have watched the
originals to know about them or their older brothers/sisters or parents might have
introduced them to the films and got them interested in the films.
Age: Teenager: Gender: Female Lifestyle: Again similarly to the
Male teenager they probably spend most of their time at school
and in their free time they probably watch TV and hang out with
friends and only really have time to go to the cinema in holidays
at the weekend and in holidays and by releasing the film close to
Christmas the filmwill have a bigger audience than if it was
released in September as the younger audience would be free of
school and have 2 weeks to watch the film. Again probably have
little spending power as they most likely donât work and if they do
its part time so they will have a little amount of money to spend and would probably be in
the C or E section of the NRS scale. Another positive of releasing the filmin the Christmas
holidays is that parents might take children to watch the film for Christmas. Again probably
interested through parents, the conventions of the trailer or the merchandise they see in
shops.
