Surfing the Wave of ‘Make in India’
n the same way as any other sector, Make in India is producing many new
Iprospects in the maritime industry, especially in shipbuilding and its repair
industry. The initiative launched in 2014 is playing a crucial role in the current
Indian Vessel requirement within the country and is benefitting the vibrant
shipping industry enormously. The industry is also taking a big leap in the volume
of cargo and passengers being moved through the waters. This means that there
will be more demand for coastal ships, barges and passenger vessels, which
would offer more opportunities to local shipyards.
Utilizing government policies, the industry is encouraging Make in India assets
with the objective of providing a facelift to local trades. The industry is enhancing
India's global shipbuilding using skilled labor and cost-effective workforce, a well-
established steel industry, technical expertise, and the increased demand for
skilled workers. This will not only boost production but will also help in setting up
more ancillary units for making spare parts. Further, the reason why the Indian
navy is approaching the Make in India initiatives aggressively is that it wants to rely
on its own powers and resources rather than those of others. Likewise, many
other Indian shipyards are developing, investing, planning, and accessing capital
markets to play a significant role in the Make in India programs. T R

s a major influence on weather and climate, the ocean covers 70 percent of Earth’s surface. This
Apercent of area is a home to a wide diversity of living things. It also provides us with the most of
our oxygen. The fact that Earth is habitable due to the ocean’s tremendous heat-holding
capacity, speaks loud about its importance. Well imagining life without it is hard and our planet would be
a victim to the enormous temperature locations, which the humans obviously cannot cope.
The ocean has been a vital part in the growth of human cultures, as well as its critical part in the
workings of the Earth system. For food, medication, transport, and trade, we depend on its waters.
Additionally, for entertainment purposes, the ocean is a location to relax. We holiday on the beach, read
books and purchase pictures which say of their moods and depths.
These and other concepts emphasize the value of the sea in our daily life but in our classrooms, it is
mainly overlooked. Most educators are unprepared to learn about marine science topics and managers do
not consider the ocean to be worthy subjects. In addition, learners are naturally interested in the sea as
well as its key position in many of our social problems today. They are thrilled to study their people and
to explore their profound secrets.. This figure implies that the professional opportunities in relation to the
sea are infinite for today’s learners.

academicians and professional engineers. PRIME is the
only approved Marine Engineering College in Andhra
Pradesh and Telangana for Marine Engineering Degree

In Marine Engineering, PRIME offers four-years
B.E/B.Tech Marine Engineering residential course,
three-year B.Tech Marine Engineering, (lateral entry
Marine Engineering), and one-year Graduate Marine
Engineering. All these programs enjoy the approval of
DG Shipping, Ministry of shipping, Government of
India; AICTE, New Delhi. And affiliation to Andhra
University.

inclined to business orientation and in this, I

have achieved a good measure of
recognition as well as success in my

Engineering Education that
gave me my initial start in life.

all my activities.

The sailor’s dream is at the horizon. To impart the
knowledge I have garnered over the years, as a Marine
Engineer and head of shipbuilding, Experience at ship
repairs division of Hindustan Shipyard Limited,
Visakhapatnam, to promising young marine engineers,
the desire to share my learning with my students and
therefore learn more made me join this prestigious
institute.

shipbuilding division for 15 years in various
capacities and as General Manager,he has
been instrumental in overseeing
construction of ships, attending to sea
trials, and subsequent handing over of ships
to owners. During the tenure in the shipyard, he
has been actively involved in teaching ship repairs
and shipbuilding subject to Trainee Marine
Engineering enrolled in HSL.
The All Round Infrastructure
The full infrastructure of PRIME consists of a ship-in-
campus,computer lab, digital and electric laboratory,
mechanical laboratory,liquid mechanical laboratory,
boiler chemical laboratory, fuel-testing laboratory,
blacksmith shop, welding shop, and a fitting shop. An
engine room simulator, library, swimming pool, large
playground, outdoor sports, indoor gymnasium, etc., all
of which make teaching as true as feasible.
The main engine and auxiliary equipment mounted on
board the vessel will provide potential sailors with
practical expertise during the whole exercise to gain a
stronger grasp of the functioning of engine room
machinery.
There is nothing more important for young sailors than
the call to get up for regular practice early in the
morning. Adhering to the same, PRIME offers
convenient accommodation, in house cooked meals, and
medical treatments as you can imagine in your home.
The college and hostel also have high-speed internet
connectivity with Wi-Fi. The sailors are inspired by their
discipline, honor, and resolve to navigate across the
elevated seas from the day they enter the university.
Excellent Career and Exposure Opportunities
As PRIME is a rightly located, students are exposed to
marine fields, i.e. Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, the Dredging
Corporation of India, and the Vizag Port Trust, which
allow them to learn the practical knowledge prior joining
the ships.
As far as scholarships are concerned, the institute
provides grants from IME, India to learners who are
financially disadvantaged. In addition, in-house grants
also provide qualified applicants with worthy learners
and government bonds.

ituated in the heart of the Sahyadri valley, near
Karjat, on the banks of Ulhas river, and surrounded
by beautiful mountain ranges, the Anglo Eastern
Maritime Academy (AEMA) trains officers and cadets to
achieve their dreams. The academy is a part of the globally
established Anglo Eastern Univan group, which provides
third-party ship management services to over 700 ships
belonging to various ship owners worldwide. The academy
was set up in 2009 at Karjat to realize the dream of having
all the ships manned totally by Anglo Eastern in-house
trained officers and cadets. It is on the mission to educate
and train them to the highest standards in the maritime
industry, making learning enjoyable and effective in the
workplace. Mastering the latest technology and trends, the
institute offers practical, theoretical, audio-visual, and
computer-based simulator training to groom cadets into
competent mariners. Presently, the campus has a yearly
intake of 240 DNS cadets, 200 GME cadets, and 80 ETOs.
Cadets from the Academy’s earlier batches have gone on
their way to becoming Masters and Chief Engineers.
The Ideal Location
The academy lies midway between Mumbai and Pune,
being just 100 kilometers away from either side. For
transportation, the nearest airports are Mumbai
International and Pune, and Karjat is well connected by
national highway and the multi-lane express highway
between Mumbai and Pune. The academy’s surrounding
provides a peaceful environment catering to better training
and learning. Additionally, the weather around this location
is pleasant throughout the year. Calling it a ship on land, the
academy states that the serene sky above the academy is a
boon for the students, where they can excel in their pursuit
of becoming proud officers of tomorrow.

The Robust Curriculum
With respect to quality education, the academy states,
“Mere gloss and granite do not make good training
grounds. More than the infrastructure, AEMA’s greatest
strength lies in its faculty who go much beyond just
teaching IMU and Director General of shipping prescribed
syllabus”.
The curriculum at AEMA is clearly defined by the
university or administration, with great emphasis on theory
along with practical and real life situations. At AEMA,
training is on a continuous pro-active mode, where cadets
are introduced to the future and upcoming technology.

Recognition at a Glance
Within the short period of just a decade, the academy has
been bestowed with many awards and recognition. For the
year 2016 and 2017, the institute consecutively won
Samudra Manthan Award under the award category;
Training Institute of the year and Logistic Academy of the
year.
In the year of 2018, it achieved Hospitality India & Travel
Award 2018 under award category; Most Scenic Academicy
in Maharashtra, followed by Confederation of education
Excellence Award 2018 under award category; Award of
Excellence in Academy, and Maritime Indoor Sports

Fabricating Industry-Ready Students
AEMA has an outstanding placement record in the industry.
Till date, AEMA has trained and placed on board about
1200 GME cadets, 280 ETO cadets, and 1880 Deck cadets.
All of them are working their way upwards to become
Captains, Chief Engineers & Electrical Officers respectively
of their respective ships. It also provides all the four
mandatory STCW courses along with Security Course and
OCTCO.

The academy keeps itself in line with the latest technology

ccording to some reports, there are nearly 2.5
Abillion people on Facebook; in India, there are
nearly 700 million people having internet
access; there are over 3.5 billion mobile phone
connections in the world. ‘Internet of Things’, or IoT as
it is called, is no longer a myth but here to stay.
Increasingly, Artificial Intelligence and Machine
Learning seem omnipresent and coupled with Data
Analytics, appear to govern the way we live and work.
I have started categorising people into two – BG and AG
(no longer BC and AD!); ‘Before Google’ and ‘After
Google’. These two are very different, as distinct as
chalk and cheese! They are born into different
environments, different worlds, different contexts. Their
thinking is largely conditioned by the environment in
which they live(d). Their aspirations and expectations
are vastly different. The AGs, in particular, appear to be
aliens to those who are BGs. BGs do not understand the
AGs – perhaps a very few do!
The AGs live in a world that is mostly uncertain,
complex, unstructured, and ambiguous – many people
call this the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and
ambiguous) world. Research studies on the so called
‘millennials’ or the ‘Gen-Y’ show that these AGs have
perceptions that is based not on the past, but the present
and the future; not on the theoretical foundations, but on
practical applications; not on ‘what was/is’ but ‘what can
be’. It is this group of AGs who are learners of today. So,
how will conventional classroom delivery of syllabus
contents meet the requirements and expectations of these
AGs?
Conventional classroom delivery or teaching
methodology is largely based on the premise that the
‘teacher’ knows more and better than the student and
hence he/she has to ‘teach’ what he/she thinks the
student has to learn. This premise is no longer true. We
are dealing with a completely different set of ‘learners’
today. They ‘learn’ best at their own pace, their own
space, their own way, and their own contents. They want
to decide what to learn, where, how, and when. Teaching
methods, particularly in higher education –
undergraduate and postgraduate levels – have to be tuned
differently in order that the ‘learner’ benefits most from
such ‘teaching’.
It is often said that information becomes obsolete every
11 hours; so, what the teacher learnt from a text book
that itself is two years old the previous night is
completely obsolete the next morning when he/she goes
to the classroom to teach. Thanks to Wikipedia, Google,
and such other technological tools, the latest and most
recently updated information is available to the student
at the click of a button. We are dealing with learners who
are constantly in search of the latest and the most
current. They have neither the patience, nor the
inclination for the old. Teachers need to change their
teaching methodology in order to be effective and
successful.

Prof. Balasubramanian is currently the
Director of GRG Centre for Advanced Studies,
Coimbatore. He is a Graduate in Mechanical
Engineering from the University of Madras
and holds PG Diploma in Management (MBA)
from IIM Calcutta.
He has 30 years of experience in industry –
private and public sector in India and
abroad.
He has been in the academia since 1999. His
focus in management education is in the
design and development of curriculum, and
faculty development. He is passionate on the
effective use of technology in management
education.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
In my view, particularly in management education,
‘lecture’ method should be restricted to not more than
30% of teaching and the remaining 70% should
comprise methods that engages the learner in the
process of learning. ‘Massive Open Online Courses’
or MOOCs provide a great opportunity to the learners
for self-learning. MOOCs provide an affordable and
flexible way to learn new skills. ‘Flipped Classroom’
is another methodology for ensuring achievement of
expected learning outcomes. This provides for the
learners to be an integral part of the teaching-learning
process through intense discussions and critical
questioning. Use of audio and visual clips can
enhance learning. In other words, it is of importance
that the learner is actively engaged in the learning
process. It is necessary for the teacher to recognise
and use the conceptual framework of David Kolb and
the learning styles.
‘Bring Your Own Device’ or BYOD has been a
frequently word acronym in education. Recognising
the impact of technology and the benefits that the
teachers and learners gain from extensive use of
technology, BYOD policy enables the teacher and the
learner to communicate with each other and
continuously learn without the constraints of physical
space, time, and geography. It helps enhance critical
thinking skills through discussions and debates.
Ultimately, the purpose of education, in my view, is
to imbibe the ability to question critically, to
distinguish between right and wrong, to learn and
share new knowledge, to acquire new skills, and to
internalise all these for becoming a vastly desirable
human. Technology is impacting education in a big
way. The ‘how’ part of education is undergoing
never-before changes – the teaching methodology of
the past is no longer adequate to meet the challenges
thrown by advancements in technology. It is the
responsibility of teachers to recognise the changes
and embrace technology not only to survive but to
stay relevant.T R

the tone. They have to nurture harmony and promote team work among the staff. In order to do so, focusing on three
spaces is essential, namely- physical, interpersonal, and historical. Maintaining a balance between these three spaces will
help leaders to cultivate and promote an efficient organizational culture. Understanding these critical human needs will help

Overcoming the Physical Space
All of us may have witnessed how flexible classroom
environments transform education. But authorities should
pay the same amount of attention to the learning needs of
teachers. They can work together and conduct professional
gatherings, which will help teachers to break the barriers of
intercommunication and promote a sense of togetherness.
School leaders can create various opportunities for
members to interact and know each other well. This will
help them to explore new dimensions of professional
learning experiences. Authorities can conduct various
activities which would foster teamwork and understanding
among the teachers. Interesting activities will not only
break the daily monotony, but will also contribute in
enhancing knowledge and promote research and
inquisitiveness.
Educators spend most of the time indoors, imparting
knowledge to the students. Steps can be taken to conduct
fun activities involving both teachers and students, where
they can step outside the classroom occasionally. This will
give them the opportunity to think outside the box, explore
their potential, and experience education in a fun way.
Nurturing the Interpersonal Space
Educational leaders have to master themselves in various
fields. They have to perform as technicians, attend
meetings, interact with communities, work together as a
team, and provide students the best educational experience.
In order to attain excellence in educational endeavors,
teachers have to constantly hone their skills and maintain

youngest department of CUSAT.It was started with an
orientation to spread its wings everywhere to encompass

was originally known as the University of Cochin but then
was renamed in 1971 through an act of Legislature of

Courses and Academic structure
The B.Tech degree programme in Marine Engineering is
designed to provide the students with modern and sound
education in basic science and engineering subjects, along
with an in-depth knowledge of the various facets of marine
engineering. Intensive practical training of six months is
given to all cadets inside the DG approved Ship-in Campus
Lab and in the machinery-overhauling workshop. Further,
cadets are provided with practical training in the Full
Machine Engine Room Simulator lab. They also get
chances to go on board ships to acquire machinery
maintenance experience. In addition to the B.Tech degree
Course, KMSME also conducts DG approved courses (both
at operational and management level) on Engine Room
Simulator. M.Tech Marine Engineering and Research work
in the same discipline are also being conducted at KMSME.

explanation would revolutionize engagement.
Algorithms can help in clustering the students in similar
groups based on their ways of learning and evaluating the
outcome. Chatbots using Natural Language Processing and
Deep Learning can answer common student’s queries. AI
will free-up teachers and give more time for one-on-one
interaction with the students and solve more complicated
personal or behavioral issues or misconceptions. Advanced
Machine Learning using Text Mining and computer vision
can also help in evaluating answer sheets which are in the
form of free-form text. It does not mean AI will replace
teachers. The role of the teachers will remain intact to take
care of individual learning needs for every student.
Machine Learning can predict strengths and weakness of a
student in particular subject, his learning pace and
understanding level. By analyzing their test scores,
worksheets, interactions and their course, helps in creating a
significantly different and unique learning pathway which is

applying AI in the education system. One of the most
widely accepted and used is Intelligent Tutoring System

Introduction
The real and practical experiences received by the people
with help of games, sports, arts, literary, culture, etc are
known as co-curricular activities earlier known as Extra-
curricular Activities. To a greater extent, the theoretical
knowledge gets strengthened and supplemented with relevant
co-curricular activities related to the content taught in the
classroom. Academic aspects of personality are solely
accomplished by classroom, while aesthetic development,
character building, spiritual growth, physical growth, moral
values, creativity, etc. are supported by co-curricular
activities. The execution of academic contents like frankness
and clarity in language, creativity and innovation, and overall
personality development is supported by co-curricular
activities. It helps to develop co-ordination, adjustment,
speech fluency, extempore expressions, etc. among students
both at the college as well as in the society.
Role of Co-curricular Activities in Student’s Life
Besides academics, co-curricular and extra co-curricular
activities play instrumental role in shaping and making
overall growth and development of human mind. No doubt,
one should primarily focus on academic activities to learn
and excel the scholarly qualities. However, it is extra co-
curricular activities like sports, games, art and culture, etc
that provide a good platform for a child/student to outshine

his/her latent potentials to compete with the challenges that
come on his/her way. In fact, it enables the
children/students to enter into the unopened doors of their
lives and become wise enough to go on the ways of the
world. The co-curricular activities such as their
participation in group activities like debates, quizzes, group
discussion, essay completions, brain storming sessions,
their interaction with peer groups, etc. make them learn
practically and enter into the real life challenges and
overcome them by their knowledge and competence. The
co-curricular activities facilitate in the multi-facets
development of various domains of mind and personality
such as intellectual development, emotional development,
social development, moral development and aesthetic
development. Creativity, enthusiasm, energetic, and positive
thinking are some of the important outcomes of the
personality development achieved by co-curricular
activities.
Acquisition of knowledge is not limited to what are in
books and other sources of literature. Rather knowledge is
based on what one learns through the experiences of one’s
real life. There are many human beings suffering from
many problems which are more psychological than
physical. Contentment in life rests on the mental
satisfaction that varies from person to person and society to
society. A great Indian poet Kabeer had knowledge in
himself yet he needed interaction with such a mentor who
can enlighten him. Therefore he went to seek the shelter of
his guru Ramanand. The world knows well who Kabeer is
today.
Importance and Benefits of Co-curricular Activities
ü It brings healthy competition amongst the students.
ü The overall carrier of student shines and the
leadership qualities grows in the students.
ü It empowers and helps the students to express
themselves freely.
ü These activities help the students not only to be wise
but also be fit and energetic in their lives. It also
inculcates the values to respect other’s view and
feeling.
ü The student gets exposure to organize activity, to
develop skills, to co-operate and co-ordinate in
different situations. It also provides ample opportunity
for self-identification and self-assessment in different
situations and circumstances.
ü It provides sufficient skill how to behave and manage
the situation when they are in contact with organizers,
fellow participants, teachers, and people outside the
school during cultural activity.
ü It develops a sense of belongingness and it becomes
very important in decision making situations
ü It enhances the interest in the academics.
Role of Academic Institutions in Organising
Co-curricular Activities
If an institution does not promote the extra-curricular and
co-curricular activities in proper direction, students might
probably go into a situation where they will find chaos with
no fruitful outcome. Therefore, the extra-curricular and
co-curricular activities should not only be promoted by the
institution but suitable mentors should be provided for the
same. From level of school to the university, the teachers
have great role to enrich their student in all respect through
co-curricular activities. Although the role of teachers in the
overall personality development of student is almost
unlimited even some of them are listed below:
· The institute/university must plan the different activities
to be carried out systematically throughout the year
without much disturbance of academic.
· The concern faculty member should provide sufficient
opportunity to their students to perform co-curricular
activities without any stress.
· The institute should introduce some innovative
programmes and encourage the students to effectively
participate.
Conclusion
The academic institutions in their curriculum provide the
co-curricular activities for development of the right brain.
These facilitate skills of listening, language, fine and gross
motor activity, discipline and expression, patience and
leadership; all the while reaching the inner core of all that is
fine about the human being. The virtues hidden in the inner
cores of students can be explored with the help of co-
curricular activities. It also helps the students being in the
expression and active manifestation of their noble
tendencies like, humility, continence, service, generosity,
benevolence, ethics, moral, etc. It is also helpful for the
natural reflections of basic instincts that found the basis of
evolution of character of human being. The students can
make worth use of their immense potential and available
opportunities and resources only with the active
participation in the co-curricular and extra-curricular

The initiative launched in 2014 is playing a crucial role in the current Indian Vessel requirement within the country and is benefitting the vibrant shipping industry enormously. The industry is also taking a big leap in the volume of cargo and passengers being moved through the waters. This means that there will be more demand for coastal ships, barges and passenger vessels, which would offer more opportunities to local shipyards. Utilizing government policies, the industry is encouraging Make in India assets with the objective of providing a facelift to local trades. The industry is enhancing India's global shipbuilding using skilled labor and cost-effective workforce, a well- established steel industry, technical expertise, and the increased demand for skilled workers. This will not only boost production but will also help in setting up more ancillary units for making spare parts. Further, the reason why the Indian navy is approaching the Make in India initiatives aggressively is that it wants to rely on its own powers and resources rather than those of others. During the tenure in the shipyard, he has been actively involved in teaching ship repairs and shipbuilding subject to Trainee Marine Engineering enrolled in HSL. The All Round Infrastructure The full infrastructure of PRIME consists of a ship-in- campus,computer lab, digital and electric laboratory, mechanical laboratory,liquid mechanical laboratory, boiler chemical laboratory, fuel-testing laboratory, blacksmith shop, welding shop, and a fitting shop. An engine room simulator, library, swimming pool, large playground, outdoor sports, indoor gymnasium, etc., all of which make teaching as true as feasible. The main engine and auxiliary equipment mounted on board the vessel will provide potential sailors with practical expertise during the whole exercise to gain a stronger grasp of the functioning of engine room machinery. There is nothing more important for young sailors than the call to get up for regular practice early in the morning. Adhering to the same, PRIME offers convenient accommodation, in house cooked meals, and medical treatments as you can imagine in your home. The college and hostel also have high-speed internet connectivity with Wi-Fi. The sailors are inspired by their discipline, honor, and resolve to navigate across the elevated seas from the day they enter the university. Excellent Career and Exposure Opportunities As PRIME is a rightly located, students are exposed to marine fields, i.e. Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, the Dredging Corporation of India, and the Vizag Port Trust, which allow them to learn the practical knowledge prior joining the ships. As far as scholarships are concerned, the institute provides grants from IME, India to learners who are financially disadvantaged. S ituated in the heart of the Sahyadri valley, near Karjat, on the banks of Ulhas river, and surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges, the Anglo Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA) trains officers and cadets to achieve their dreams. The academy is a part of the globally established Anglo Eastern Univan group, which provides third-party ship management services to over 700 ships belonging to various ship owners worldwide. The academy was set up in 2009 at Karjat to realize the dream of having all the ships manned totally by Anglo Eastern in-house trained officers and cadets. It is on the mission to educate and train them to the highest standards in the maritime industry, making learning enjoyable and effective in the workplace.   • 20. ccording to some reports, there are nearly 2.5 Abillion people on Facebook; in India, there are nearly 700 million people having internet access; there are over 3.5 billion mobile phone connections in the world. ‘Internet of Things’, or IoT as it is called, is no longer a myth but here to stay. Increasingly, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning seem omnipresent and coupled with Data Analytics, appear to govern the way we live and work. I have started categorising people into two – BG and AG (no longer BC and AD!); ‘Before Google’ and ‘After Google’. These two are very different, as distinct as chalk and cheese! They are born into different environments, different worlds, different contexts. Their thinking is largely conditioned by the environment in which they live(d). Their aspirations and expectations are vastly different. The AGs, in particular, appear to be aliens to those who are BGs. BGs do not understand the AGs – perhaps a very few do! The AGs live in a world that is mostly uncertain, complex, unstructured, and ambiguous – many people call this the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world. Research studies on the so called ‘millennials’ or the ‘Gen-Y’ show that these AGs have perceptions that is based not on the past, but the present and the future; not on the theoretical foundations, but on practical applications; not on ‘what was/is’ but ‘what can be’. It is this group of AGs who are learners of today. So, how will conventional classroom delivery of syllabus contents meet the requirements and expectations of these AGs? Conventional classroom delivery or teaching methodology is largely based on the premise that the ‘teacher’ knows more and better than the student and hence he/she has to ‘teach’ what he/she thinks the student has to learn. This premise is no longer true. We are dealing with a completely different set of ‘learners’ today. They ‘learn’ best at their own pace, their own space, their own way, and their own contents. They want to decide what to learn, where, how, and when. Teaching methods, particularly in higher education – undergraduate and postgraduate levels – have to be tuned differently in order that the ‘learner’ benefits most from such ‘teaching’. It is often said that information becomes obsolete every 11 hours; so, what the teacher learnt from a text book that itself is two years old the previous night is completely obsolete the next morning when he/she goes to the classroom to teach. Thanks to Wikipedia, Google, and such other technological tools, the latest and most recently updated information is available to the student at the click of a button. We are dealing with learners who are constantly in search of the latest and the most current. They have neither the patience, nor the inclination for the old. Ultimately, the purpose of education, in my view, is to imbibe the ability to question critically, to distinguish between right and wrong, to learn and share new knowledge, to acquire new skills, and to internalise all these for becoming a vastly desirable human.
