DETAILS OF THE CONFERENCE
DAY 1: 22ND
FEBRUARY 2013
Arrival of the Student Delegations:
The delegations began arriving at about noon and were warmly received at the welcome desk.
Each delegation was given a folder containing the event schedule, some copies of ME Today,
as well as name tags for each delegate. Each group was then guided to their rooms, where
they freshened up for the opening ceremony.
Opening Ceremony:
The ceremony was conducted in the main hall of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and
began with a welcoming speech by two first year members of the local ASME Section
followed by a moving address by the chief guest Dr. S.I.H. Gillani, the Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Engineering and Technology in Peshawar. He praised the efforts of the
ASME Section there and through several anecdotes showed us the importance of cultivating
leadership in our generation while giving us a glimpse of what our social roles might be in
the future.
This address was followed by an informative video highlighting the heritage of UET
Peshawar, as well as the presence of ASME at the university. There were then speeches by

After this, an orientation session was conducted in which each delegation was individually
called up on stage and introduced. This session set the stage for all the networking activities
during the remainder of the event.
Dinner:
After the conclusion of the opening ceremony, the delegates were led to an adjoining hall for
dinner, a scintillating array of rice, kebabs, chicken qorma and dessert. The dinner was also a
wonderful opportunity for the delegates to mingle and interact with each other, building up a
positive familiarity with the group as well as the environment.
After dinner, the organizing team proposed playing a movie for entertainment, but upon
request by many exhausted delegates, an end was declared to the activities for the day.

DAY 2: 23RD
FEBRUARY 2013
The enthusiasm, spirit and confidence were on the peak, as the day began here at the
Engineering Block of UET Peshawar. The best of the best from the ASME Student Sections
of the leading engineering universities were competing here. Five out of six modules were
planned on the 2nd
day.
Student Design Competition (SDC)
The first event of the day, started early in
the morning. It would be no wrong to say
that Student Design Competition is the
most technical and awaited module of the
Student Professional Development
Conference, on which students had been
working for about 6 months. This year
participants had to design and fabricate a
prototype of remote inspection device for
application in nuclear power plants and
with that they had to perform some tasks
in an arena within 300 seconds. 12 teams
participated in this event. A team
comprised 4 members, out of which two were controlling the device and the others had to set
the device in the arena. The key to winning this competition was accuracy and speed in
performing the tasks, together with the design of the device. UET Lahore and UET Lahore
KSK emerged out as the strongest competitors. It was really a tough and a nail biting
competition, but in the end UET Lahore KSK was the victorious, with the runners up, UET
Lahore. The best technical design award was given to UET Peshawar. This competition really
showed that there is some shear talent, desire and will to achieve something, in the students
of Pakistan.

Old Guard Technical Poster Contest
After Student Design Competition, judges
and the participants moved to the next
venue where the old guard technical
poster competition was held. The main
idea of this module was to emphasize the
ability to deliver a visual presentation. 12
contestants participated in this event. This
module depicted solutions to the
problems faced in Pakistan, technological
advancements regarding the field of
engineering and much more. Saad Saleem from UET Taxila was declared as the winner for
his poster on “Design Fabrication and Erection of RDF Dryer” and Farhad Jan from GIKI got
the runners up prize.
After old guard Technical poster contest, teams were taken to the main hall of engineering
block where lunch was ready to be served.

Old Guard Technical Presentation Contest
This competition started in the afternoon, after the poster competition. An engineer, like all
professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate, orally. This
competition was designed to emphasize the value of an ability to deliver oral presentations.
The students of ASME Student
Sections of renowned engineering
universities across Pakistan came to
share their Research and Projects in
the form of power point presentations.
The contest was at the center of
attention of students. The Q & A
session proved to be very informative,
as very interesting questions were put
forward to the presenters by the
judges, which in reply got splendid
answers, showing their hard work.
Rubab Tanveer from UET Peshawar
proved to be the best and was declared
as the winner, together with the
talented Manish from UET Lahore,
who was declared as the runner up.

Old Guard Technical Web-Page Competition
After the presentation competition, took place the technical web-page competition. This
competition was intended to encourage the delivery of visual presentations using web page
facility. The content of the web page was to be related to some area in the field of mechanical
engineering. 10 participants competed in this module. NED set some benchmarks in this
event. Sabeeh Ali from NED clinched the title of the event, and Nida Ali being the runners up
from the same university, and both of them got some good appreciation and motivation form
Malik Usman, the judge of the competition.
Old Guard Technical Video Presentation Competition
For the first time in the history of SPDC Pakistan, Old Guard Technical Video Presentation
Competition took place. The credit for the initiation of this concept goes to UET Peshawar.
Like the original Old Guard Competition, this new program puts great emphasis on the value
of an ability to deliver clear, concise and effective presentations to an audience, particularly
pertaining to some sphere in which an engineer is or should be involved. Though there is no
“final” cross‐District competition, the video format offers each participant wide exposure to,
and visibility in ASME networks worldwide. The subject matter of each presentation must
address a technical, economic or environmental aspect of engineering or other basic
engineering theme, provided it pertains to some sphere in which an engineer is or should be
involved. The video from the participants of UET Peshawar was a great effort, said by the
judges and the audience, which also got the first prize, and Mairaj Maqsood from UET Taxila
was declared as the runner up.
It was a tiring yet entertaining day, at night round about 9:00 pm, teams were taken to the
new campus building of UET Peshawar, which is about 20 min. drive away from the main
campus, by the means of university buses. Dinner was served there; the menu was local
cuisine.

CONCLUSION
To conclude, the organizing team had achieved and exceeded all expectations of the event.
The rooms were comfortable and relaxing, while at the same time the environment at the
convention was challenging and demanding.
With representatives from almost all the student sections in Pakistan, as well as the as
presence of several ASME professionals, the participants had countless networking
opportunities to both social and professional ends.
With several engineering and presentation competitions, the participants had the chance to
compete against the sharpest of minds and personalities. They also had the opportunity to
showcase their skills and projects on a national platform, the winners even having the option
to do the same on an international scale.
Most importantly, however, the intense SDPC experience provided exposure, albeit a rather
concentrated dose, that is essential for professional grooming.
Apart from this, the congregation of all the national student sections gave the opportunity to
review the activities and members from each section, as well as the chance to get a feel for
the spirit of ASME members.
In terms of organizing, the SDOB team would like to thank ASME-UET Peshawar and
everyone else whose efforts made this event such a success. We especially thank Mr. Malik
Usman Awan and Mr. Fawad Kiramat for their extensive involvement and indispensible
guidance during the event.
