proposed an educational institution
modelled on the likes of a similar
establishment he had seen in the state
of Karnataka in India. The plan was
highly appreciated, and he was soon
invited to initiate and lead the creation
of a medical academic center in
Ajman.
While Dr Moideen had no prior
experience about this segment at the
time, he saw a great potential in the
inherent idea and decided to pursue it
and scale up further. A year later, Gulf
Medical College was established, and
ever since it has grown leaps and
bounds and become one of the most
sought-after private medical
universities in the GCC region. 60 per
cent of the health professionals trained
in the UAE are alumni of this
prestigious university. It's not only
doctors, but also nurses, dental,
physiotherapy, among others.
Emphasizing on the evolution and
development of the Gulf Medical
University in terms of buildings, staff,
students and scientific and educational
degrees, Dr Moideen states, "From

several shortcomings that become
a major obstacle when the system

form of a severe lack of healthcare
professionals.
One of the individuals who is
addressing these challenges and
constructing a brighter future for the

the Gulf Medical University (GMU),

The Thumbay Research Institute of
Precision Medicine Research is the hub
for postgraduate studies in Biomedical
Sciences, translational research, and

offering Doctor of Philosophy in
Precision Medicine in collaboration
with Université Paris Saclay. At Gulf
Medical University, the unflinching
commitment to quality of education
provided and the world-class
infrastructure and facilities ensure that
students gain the best professional
knowledge. Furthermore, the
university's unique Summer Training
Program readies its students to deal
with professional challenges, in
addition to widening the horizons of
their knowledge and providing them
the potential of unrivalled
employability.
A Revolutionary Way to Educate
Since Gulf Medical University has
been a pioneer in the health professions
higher education segment as first
private academic institute, GMU has
paired the 'right' courses with the
'right' formats to build students' career.
Gulf Medical University is full of
opportunities for students aspiring to
make a career in health professions.
From short-term courses, full-fledged
degrees to tie-ups with other
international colleges, students gain
learning in an environment that
emphasizes on 'learning through
doing.' The University presents a
dynamic curriculum, which provides
excellent clinical training, integrates
the health sciences with clinical
experience, and utilizes modern
technology. GMU is also one of the
most in-demand medical universities in
the Middle East region, which gets
around 8000 applications every year.
Moreover, students benefit with
adequate opportunities to showcase
their achievements through student
activities, interprofessional skills,
sporting and cultural events that train
them to be multi-disciplinary experts.
Other benefits provided to the students
include: Clinical training sites of
unmatched quality at 8 hospitals, 10
clinics, 5 labs and 48 pharmacies and a
total of 700 beds; tie-ups with other
local entities as clinical training sites
with over 400 qualified faculty, doctors
and adjunct faculty who provide one-
on-one clinical training to students and
quality care to the patients of UAE;
access to technological platforms and
an outstanding infrastructure for
research on imaging, functional
genomics, sequencing with NGS
facility.
In terms of advancing healthcare in the
UAE and globally, GMU has launched
the establishment of the first liquid
biopsy facility in the region, the zebra
fish and a platform for drug discovery
and development. This has led to
achieving its position as a leader in
research in medical education in UAE
and the entire region with 70 per cent
of all papers published in medical
education in the UAE coming from
GMU.
Incorporating real-world applications
into students' lesson plans, using
adaptive learning tools to personalize
their courses, and easily accessible
platforms for group learning, Gulf
Medical University is known for
offering stronger student support,
integrated technology platforms, and
structured course road maps. In

robust technology infrastructure, such

exceptional learning experiences for
the students.
Highly qualified academicians and
experienced practitioners train the
students. Teaching methods include
traditional lectures, group projects,
individual work, practical laboratory
sessions and clinical training. GMU's
emphasis on research and clinical
training drives on the idea of emerging
as one of the leading research-based
universities in the region. The students
at Gulf Medical University are given
the opportunity to learn from the best
faculty in classrooms, gain first-hand
on-job insights at the teaching hospital
of the group, develop their awareness
of healthcare business operations, and
enhance critical patient-management
skills, such as positive inter-profession
collaboration and communication.

16. The research-based approach to
learning, early exposure to clinical
cases and patients and being mentored
by some of the leading professionals-
cum-academicians gives Gulf Medical
University graduates the competitive
edge over the others. "Our prolific
team headed by the chancellor of Gulf
Medical University, Professor Hossam
Hamdy, teachers and doctors ensure
that students receive first-hand training
at our teaching hospitals, assist in
developing critical and reasoning skills
that will be assets to their personal
growth going forward," adds Dr
Moideen.
Moreover, the university's Alumni
Society provides support to new
graduates in their career-search,
through personal/career counselling,
help in CV/resume preparation,
empowering them for handling job
interviews, preparing documents for
residency programs and employment,

alumni are pursuing high-flying
medical careers in USA, UK, Middle
East countries, Canada, Australia,
India, and Pakistan, etc. Many of the
students also enroll for higher studies,
in their chosen areas of specialization.
Around 22 per cent of its graduates are
admitted to US medical schools for
further training.
A University That Celebrates
Diversity, Nurtures Global
Ambitions
The Middle East region today has
several opportunities for well-trained
healthcare professionals. The
healthcare sector of the region is
witnessing dramatic changes in scope,
expansion, and investments. In the
UAE alone, Gulf Medical University
and its network of pioneering teaching
hospitals train around 60 per cent of
the medical professionals in the
country.
Some of the key offerings for an
international student include
internationally recognized curriculum,
own teaching hospitals at Ajman,
Dubai, Sharjah & Fujairah established
research division, innovation centre,
state-of-the-art simulation dental
laboratories, simulation centre/clinical
skills lab, library community health
programs and clinical training at
different sites across the UAE. All
programs are approved and accredited
by Ministry of Higher Education and
Scientific Research (MOHESR), hostel
and sports facilities, student cohort
from over 90 Countries, most modern
computerized testing centre, great
career prospects, well-organized
alumni network of highly placed
healthcare professionals around the
world and more.
Gulf Medical University's student
affairs department acts as a bridge to
reflect the needs of international
students to university administration.
"We aim to enhance international
student experience, promote cultural
diversity and inclusivity in Gulf
Medical University through events and
service. It helps, furthermore, to
involve students in the University
community by providing appropriate
student organizations, activities,
publications, and opportunities for
interaction with faculty, staff, and
peers outside the classroom," speaks
Dr Moideen.
The office of Student Affairs
coordinates all matters concerning
Graduate Student Council, Student
Welfare, Career Guidance, Alumni
Affairs, Student Health, Placement,
Student Discipline, Residential Halls,
Transportation, Student Publication,
Student Activities and Sports. Students
may approach the Dean/Associate
Dean – Student Affairs to resolve
issues regarding student affairs and
student support services.
The country's visionary leadership has
established an excellent education
system. The universities attract
overseas students in large numbers on
account of their modern, state-of-the-
art infrastructure, most advanced
curriculums, economic tuition fees and
expenses, the futuristic/cosmopolitan
image of UAE's cities, the remarkably
low crime rates, and more. With the
UAE gaining precedence for its world-
class healthcare ecosystem, so has its
popularity with students for health
professions education. Medical
tourism, too, has grown to become a
significant pillar of the UAE's
healthcare strategy.
A report by Euromonitor International
has forecast that the UAE's medical
tourism revenues will touch Dhs19bn
by 2023, particularly with the
government enabling its growth. These
offerings reflect how the healthcare
delivery system and subsequently the
requirement for qualified healthcare
professions is projected to see an
upward demand.
Envisioning a World Class Future
At Thumbay Group, a world is
envisioned in which the development
of societies center on community-
focused education, health, and
wellness-which are appropriate metrics
of the prosperity of a country. The
organisation is inspired by the
country's leadership and vision who
have continuously raised the bar for
development across every sector and
are honored to have developed
alongside the country.
Going forward too, it would like to see
itself delivering world-class and
integrated services for the community
of UAE and beyond.
Advice for Upcoming Leaders
"My best advice for anyone starting a
business would be to identify a widely
shared pain point that nobody else has
solved and create the best solution for
it. From there, you can build
complementary products and services.
Gulf Medical University is an example,
where we started with the aim to boost
education in the emirate of Ajman, get
more young people to visit the place on
daily basis and built multi-diversified
Thumbay Group from there," Dr
Moideen concludes.

Champions of Change
The Knowledge Review | 17
thical leadership is rooted in
Eintegrity, honesty, and a
commitment to doing the right
thing, even when it's difficult or
unpopular. It's about leading by example
and creating a culture of trust and
transparency within an organisation.
Ethical leaders prioritise the well-being of
their employees, customers, and other
stakeholders rather than their own self-
interest.
Ethical leadership can profoundly impact
an organisation, both internally and
externally. Internally, it can create a sense
of purpose and meaning for employees
who feel their work contributes to the
greater good. It can also lead to increased
engagement, loyalty, and commitment
among employees, who are more likely to
be motivated by a leader who models
ethical behaviour.
Externally, ethical leadership can enhance
an organisation's reputation and
credibility. When customers, partners, and
other stakeholders see that an organisation
is led by ethical leaders who prioritise
integrity and transparency, they're more
likely to trust and support that
organisation. This, in turn, can lead to
increased loyalty, repeat business, and
referrals.
20. What is Ethical Leadership?
Ethical leadership is a leadership style
that prioritises ethical principles,
values, and behaviours. Ethical leaders
act with integrity, fairness, and respect
for the dignity and rights of all
individuals. They make ethical
decisions and inspire others to do the
same. Ethical leaders also create a
positive work culture that promotes
ethical behaviour, transparency, and
accountability.
Furthermore, ethical leadership
involves prioritising the organisation's
and its stakeholders' long-term interests
over short-term gains. This means
considering the ethical implications of
decisions and actions, even if they may
not immediately benefit the
organisation's bottom line.
Ethical leadership is not just about
following the law or adhering to a set
of rules. It goes beyond compliance
and involves a commitment to moral
values and principles that guide
decision-making and behaviour.
Ethical leaders are driven by a moral
compass and use ethical principles as a
framework for decision-making.
Ethical leaders also prioritise the well-
being of their employees and create a
work culture that fosters trust, respect,
and transparency. They recognise that
employees are not just a means to an
end but individuals with their own
goals, aspirations, and values. Ethical
leaders prioritise their employees'
personal and professional growth,
create opportunities for learning and
development, and foster an
environment where individuals feel
valued and respected.
Ultimately, ethical leadership is about
doing the right thing, even when it's
difficult or unpopular. It involves
taking responsibility for one's actions,
being accountable to others, and
striving to impact the world positively.
Ethical leaders are not perfect, but they
are committed to learning, growing,
and creating a work culture that reflects
their values and principles.
Ethical leadership is more critical than
ever in today's complex and ever-
changing business landscape. It is not
just a nice-to-have but an essential
component of organisational success
and sustainability. By prioritising
ethical principles and behaviours,
leaders can create a culture of trust,
respect, and accountability and inspire
their employees to do the same.
The Importance of Ethical
Leadership
Ethical leadership is crucial for the
success and sustainability of any
organisation. It fosters trust,
accountability, and transparency.
Ethical leaders set the tone for the
organisation, and their behaviour and
values influence the behaviour of
others. When leaders act with integrity
and make ethical decisions, they
inspire trust and confidence in their
followers. This, in turn, creates a
positive work environment and fosters
a culture of ethical behaviour.
Ethical leadership also promotes
positive change. Leaders who act
ethically and promote ethical
behaviour are more likely to be
perceived as credible and trustworthy.
This, in turn, increases their ability to
influence and persuade others to adopt
ethical behaviours and values. Ethical
leaders can also inspire their followers
to act in the best interests of the
organisation and society as a whole.
Cultivating Ethical Behaviour in
Leaders
Cultivating ethical behaviour in leaders
requires a commitment to ethical
principles and values. Ethical leaders
must first recognise the importance of
ethical conduct and commit to acting
with integrity and promoting ethical
behaviour in others. This requires
understanding moral principles, such
as honesty, fairness, respect, and
responsibility.
Ethical leaders must also create a
culture that supports ethical behaviour.
This involves promoting transparency,
accountability, and open
communication. Ethical leaders must
be willing to listen to feedback,
address concerns, and take
responsibility for their actions. This
creates a culture of trust and respect
that promotes ethical behaviour and
values.
Leading with Integrity
Leading with integrity requires a
commitment to ethical principles and
values. Ethical leaders must act with
honesty, fairness, and respect for
others. They must make decisions that
are in the best interests of the
organisation and society as a whole.
This requires a willingness to stand up
for what is right, even when it is
difficult or unpopular.
Leaders must also be accountable for
their actions. They must take
responsibility for their decisions and
actions and be willing to admit
mistakes and learn from them. This
promotes trust and transparency and
fosters a positive work culture.
Ethical leadership is crucial for the
success and sustainability of any
organisation. Ethical leaders inspire
trust, create a positive work culture,
and foster positive change. Cultivating
ethical behaviour in leaders requires a
commitment to ethical principles and
values. Ethical leaders must create a
culture that supports ethical conduct
and values and lead with integrity,
honesty, and respect for others. By
doing so, they can inspire trust,
promote positive change, and create a
better world for all.

25. Li & Fung
Li & Fung's aspiration statement is:
"To deliver value in global supply
chains by living our values around
people, partners and planet." The
company's core values are: Humility,
Entrepreneurship and Family.
Li & Fung has been managing global
supply chains in over 50 markets for
116 years. The company stands out for
having the highest level of scalability
and flexibility in the sector. Its on-the-
ground presence as well as its deep
relationships with local vendors,
government regulators, and business
communities help mitigate some of the
risks so present today for both
customers and vendors. "Our flexible

challenges do come with opportunities,
and the only way one can overcome
them is to tackle challenges head-on
and overcome them by discovering the
opportunities that lie beneath.

The COVID-19 outbreak severely

its customers.
Adapting to Change
For Deepika, working in the supply
chain sector has never been
monotonous. She has worked in supply
chain management for 30 years and has
seen significant changes in the sector.
However, the business has been
dealing with more dramatic and
turbulent situations in recent years. The
pandemic has taught us that disruption
is a constant, which is one of its most
important lessons. Deepika believes

Journey of Equity
Rajesh reminisces, "I have been in the

years. I still remember how I first
encountered the stock markets – my
mother used to give me Vimal coupons,
which she used to receive since she
was a shareholder of Reliance."
After finishing his education, Rajesh

World Class Advisors
The vision of AlfAccurate
Advisors is to become the
most admired investment
advisor in the world. Its
mission is to provide the
best in class services to
its clients and to ensure
client satisfaction in all
areas of its business.
The company is
guided by three core
values – Trust,
Integrity, and
Passion. That
showcases its
commitment to its
clients, its team, and
the community at large
and acts as a reminder of
what matters the most.
These values foster a
results-driven and people-
focused culture at the firm:
Ÿ Relentlessly Pursue
Excellence: Bring the best of
yourself to each interaction
with your work and with your
clients.
Ÿ Remain Constantly Curious: A
forward-looking, ever-learning,
tenacious and thorough approach
should drive creativity and growth
for clients and yourself.
Ÿ Always Act Ethically: A principle-
based decision-making and high
standards of corporate governance
ensure that the client's best interests
are always kept in mind.
Word of Mouth Growth
Entrepreneurship is challenging. The
word 'PMS' was not widely recognized
and respected during the time Rajesh
started. Hence, he and his team put in a
lot of time and energy to explain to
investors the concept of PMS. Despite
their efforts, many used to refrain from
investing in equities. However, with
perseverance, they were slowly and
steadily able to grow by fostering their
relationship with existing clients, due
to increasing trust in their company's
services.
The name of the company spread
eventually by word of mouth. Rajesh
says, "We have always been ethical,
honest, and upfront with our clients,
which resulted in our existing clients
recommending other clients. We have
seen some ups and downs, but we are
able to sleep peacefully at night since
we always keep the client’s interest
first."

economics, and related disciplines. He

views on Governance.
Ÿ Elected on the advisory panel of the
World CSR forum.
Ÿ Invited by the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of India UAE (Dubai)
to present outlook on Investments.
Having spoken and gained experience
at a global level, the major difference
that Rajesh finds between the Indian
and foreign education space is the way
of teaching. He explains, "Abroad, the
education system is more application-
based with teachers focusing on
ensuring that students apply the
concepts learned correctly. On the
other hand, in India, the education
system lays more emphasis on concept-
based learning, which aims to teach a
wide variety of concepts across a
range of disciplines to students. Each
style has its strengths and weaknesses
and carves out differently in different
students."
Communicating India's Growth
Prospects
One major factor that motivates Rajesh
to keep representing India at the global
level is the lack of awareness about
India's growth story and growth
prospects. Currently, India attracts
significantly lower FDI as compared to
China – presenting a huge investment
opportunity. Many advantages play a
role here – a vibrant democracy, the
right demographics, a strong legal
framework, and an increasing

Future and Advice
For AlfAccurate Advisors, Rajesh
envisions a future of being an admired
investment advisor globally. He wishes
to see his company recognized for its
values and culture. He also wishes that
his company becomes globally reputed
for being one of the most ethical and
trustworthy investment management
companies.
Rajesh concludes by sharing a piece of
wisdom for the new rising leaders in
the industry, "Remember – Rome was

entrepreneurial culture. Certain
indicators, such as the growth in PLI,
reducing inflationary pressures, and a
strong and resilient economy, make
India an attractive business hub.
Rajesh says, "Increasing awareness

Foreign Direct Investment. I
recommend future leaders follow their
passion, find out their niche, and do
their best at that niche. Doing so would
immensely add value to them and also
add value to several stakeholders
interested in knowing the initiatives of
such leaders."
Community Giving
Rajesh thinks that the company has an
inherent duty to not only enhance the
lives of its clients but to enrich the
communities in which they live
through volunteerism, civic
engagement, and philanthropic
initiatives. Consequently, AlfAccurate
Advisors has a long history of giving
back to the community.

compelling personal vision that guides
their actions and decisions. This
personal vision serves as the
foundation for the leader's
organizational vision, providing a
roadmap for the leader to inspire and
motivate their followers towards a
shared goal.
Having a personal vision allows a
leader to communicate their values and
beliefs to their followers and helps
them to understand how they fit into
the bigger picture.
Visionary leadership is an
important leadership style that
has gained popularity in recent
times. This type of leadership is
characterized by leaders who have a
clear and compelling vision of the
future and who are able to inspire and
motivate their followers towards
achieving this vision.

influences visionary leadership. A

36. By having a personal vision, a leader
can connect with their followers on a
deeper level, building trust and
inspiring loyalty.
Personal vision also enables a leader to
be authentic in their leadership style.
Authenticity is vital in inspiring
followers, as it allows leader to build
trust and credibility with their
followers.
Emotional Intelligence
Leaders who possess high emotional
intelligence have the ability to
recognize, understand, and manage
their own emotions, as well as the
emotions of others. This skill allows
them to connect with their followers on
a deeper level, building trust and
inspiring loyalty. Emotional
intelligence enables a leader to respond
appropriately to the needs and
emotions of their followers, which is
essential for motivating them towards
achieving the shared vision.
Leaders with high emotional
intelligence are adept at managing their
own emotions. They can remain calm
and composed even in high-pressure
situations, which allows them to make
rational decisions and communicate
effectively with their followers. This
ability to regulate their own emotions
enables them to stay focused on the
long-term goals of the organisation,
despite any short-term setbacks or
challenges.
Creativity and Innovation
A visionary leader must also be
creative and innovative. They must be
able to think outside the box and come
up with new and unique solutions to
problems. This requires a willingness
to take risks and a tolerance for failure.
A leader who is not willing to take
risks or tolerate failure may miss out
on opportunities for innovation and
growth.
Strategic Thinking
Visionary leaders must also be
strategic thinkers. They must be able to
see the big picture and anticipate future
trends and challenges. This requires a
deep understanding of the
organisation's strengths and
weaknesses and the external
environment in which it operates. A
leader who lacks strategic thinking
skills may be unable to develop a clear
and effective vision for the future.
Communication Skills
Effective communication is another
factor that influences visionary
leadership. A leader who is able to
communicate their vision clearly and
persuasively is more likely to inspire
their followers towards achieving that
vision. This requires strong verbal and
written communication skills and the
ability to listen actively and respond
appropriately to feedback.
Adaptability
A visionary leader must be able to
adjust their vision and strategy in
response to changing circumstances.
They must be willing to be flexible and
open-minded, as well as the ability to
learn from mistakes and failures. An
adaptable leader is one who can
navigate through unpredictable
situations, deal with unexpected
obstacles, and still find ways to achieve
their goals.
In today's fast-paced and ever-
changing business environment, the
ability to adapt is essential for leaders
to remain competitive and successful.
Leaders who can adapt to change
quickly and effectively can keep their
organisation relevant, innovative, and
profitable. By embracing change,
visionary leaders can open up new
opportunities for growth, attract new
customers, and improve overall
organizational performance.
Courage and Resilience
Finally, visionary leaders must have
courage and resilience. They must be
willing to take bold action in pursuit of
their vision, even in the face of
adversity and opposition. This requires
a willingness to stand up for what they
believe in, even when it is unpopular or
goes against the status quo. It also
requires resilience in the face of
setbacks and failures and the ability to
bounce back from these setbacks and
continue to pursue their vision.
In conclusion, visionary leadership is
an important leadership style that can
help organizations achieve their goals
and reach new heights of success. To
be an effective visionary leader, one
must possess a clear and compelling
personal vision, high emotional
intelligence, creativity and innovation,
strategic thinking skills, effective
communication skills, adaptability,
courage and resilience. By
understanding and developing these
factors, leaders can chart new paths for
their organizations, inspire their
followers towards a shared vision, and
achieve lasting success.
