1. TASK 1B: Artist Avatar and Target Audience
ARTIST AVATAR
My artist is going to be reflecting the genre type of my music album. The gene of my music is
a mix of hip-hop and contemporary R&B with a target audience of young teenagers, as this
kind of music is popular at the moment for older children. The way in which I will produce the
key reflection of my music is by allowing my avatars to be wearing clothes related to this hip-
hop style. I thought, as my artist will be male, to also pick a female avatar to show how the
clothes represent a hip-hop look in both genders, to perhaps allow girls to also see what
their music genre outfit could inspire to. The type of clothing I chose was inspired from my
researched artist, Bryson Tiller. This included the trousers as very chilled, so either tracksuit
jogging bottoms or some sort of jeans/ripped jeans to represent that sort of modern and
current style.
I also decided to allow my male avatar to wear a baggy top to show how the outfit was
modernized and more teenage like, and for my female avatar I allowed their top to be
cropped to show the kind of hip-hop ad indie look. This is because the target audience of my
music style and the avatar is teenagers, so the style of clothing would be very similar to what
teenagers wear now, perhaps persuading teenagers to listen to this kind of music with
similar clothing style matching the genre of music. In addition, the avatars are wearing
trainers to show the stereotypical teenage outfit currently worn today.
2. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience are going to be mostly teenagers as they are the widest common
audience to the hip-hop and rap style of this music. The avatars also represent the target
audience as teenagers as my new artist is that old teenage age, so the style of clothing is
also representative of the audience listening to that style of music. Again, I also aspired my
new male artist to be similar to Bryson Tiller’s style and genre. This is why my genre was
commonly hip-hop and contemporary R&B and the style of Bryson Tiller was very similar to
common teenagers; ripped jeans or baggy jeans, baggy top and trainers. Occasionally, not
shown on my avatar, but on my CD cover, a hat and perhaps a stylish watch will be worn to
convey that stylish and hip-hop look.
The class status of the target audience is middle
class. The majority of the target audience are
teenagers, so the class status is average class and
not too high or too low. Following from the NRS Social
Demographic Scale, teenagers and this chosen target
audience would fall into the E social grade with those
at lowest lower of subsistence with an occupation of
state pensioners or widows (no other earner), casual
or lowest grade workers. Most teenagers are students
so they fall into the E social grade category.
Stereotypically, teenagers are usually chilled and not ‘posh’ so the class wouldn’t be upper
class. Usually the ‘upper class’ category would tend to be people listening to opera or
classical music.
The jobs associated with the target audience are usual average teenage jobs. For instance,
these kind of low wage jobs would include shop assistants or working in a restaurant or pub.
These jobs include a small wage pay, which shows the basic job type and pay, and perhaps
close by to their living environment so it’s easy to get to and from, from their house or living
environment, as they may only be cycling or walking if a car is not appropriate. Also, the
average teenagers are usually still students at college or school, so they can only work
about 10 hours as well as all the work they are doing associated with their school subjects.
The hobbies associated with the chosen target audience are usual teenage hobbies. For
example, partying with this genre of music playing at the party. This makes other people
their age listen to this common hip-hop music and so it becomes popular as other people
start listening to this style. In addition, other hobbies would include sports and active
activities, with music in the background perhaps. For instance, if you dance it would be to
popular music in the charts or to whatever music style you are dancing to, if you are dancing
to hip-hop music then this contemporary R&B style of music would be played to match the
feel of the dance, perhaps making these dancers aware and keen on this genre of music.
Moreover, many male teenagers belong to a sport group; a rugby or football team.,
stereotypically.
3. DEMOGRAPHICS AND PYSCHOGRAPHICS
Demographic information is used in
media marketing to classify an
audience into age, gender, race and
other categories. The NRS (National
Readership Survey) is the most used
demographic survey in the UK.
Following on from the NRS Social
Demographic Scale there are 6
social grades. The target audience
for my artist would incorporate
mainly older teenagers who listen to
this hip-hop or contemporary R&B
genre. The teenagers of my target
audience would belong to the E
social grade as these kind of people
would have low grade workers. As teenagers being students, they would belong to this kind
of category as they are earning a small wage depending on their young age at a part-time
job as only 10-12 hours occupied at a job is allowed, as well as attending school 5 days a
week.
Psychographics are scales that use categories of personalities and puts people into
categories regarding their personality or lifestyle. The main scale used was developed by
Young and Rubicam and is known as the
4Cs scale (Cross Cultural Consumer
Characterisation) and divides people into 7
types, depending on their core motivation. As
all teenagers are attending college 5 days a
week, this leaves them exhausted so the
majority of their motivation is similar to each
other. This means they would belong to a
successful category and would perhaps show
how the people in the same category would
have similar personality and music taste, if
similar in age.
