2. Leaflet
The leaflet is for a charity called ‘Viva’, which are
against lambing and other various cruelty to lambs.
On the leaflet it says a lot of information about the
cruelty that they are against, this is done in clear font,
which is easy to read. They have added facts in this
text, it also includes clarity. The text is accurate as
there is no spelling or grammar mistakes. They have
used formal language, this is because the topic is quite
serious.
They have used a picture that shows some lambs, this
picture is meant to show what really happens, and is
supposed to look quite shocking for the viewer. There
is also a small caption above the image, this gives a bit
more context for the picture.
They use pink text for the headlines of all of the texts.
This makes it stand out against the rest of the text as
well as the background. The font used for these
headlines is also different, it looks more broken up and
hand written. This text is a lot bigger so they were able
to use a more difficult to read font, than with the
bigger text.
There is a pink box behind some of the text, this is
used to indicate where the bottom of the page is, as
the bottom part is meant to be cut off. The box also
makes the text underneath more distinctive and look
as if it is more important than some of the other text
on the page.
They put their logo at the top of the page, this makes it the first thing that
someone would look at. They have small parts of the logo which is the same pink
colour as the rest of important text, this shows that they have linked everything
together, this makes it look like a cohesive piece.
They have named the leaflet ‘Meet lucky
the lamb’ this engages with the reader
because they are telling them to do
something. The word ‘Lucky’ has been
highlighted in the same pink colour as the
rest, this makes it stand out against the
rest of the title and shows that it is the
focal point of the leaflet.
The text then starts to go into the story of
Lucky, this starts of quite nice and happy
then ends with a sad statement. This will
make the reader start to feel good for the
lamb because it says about how it is lucky
it didn’t die. Then it ends with a
statement about it dying, this plays with
the feelings that the reader felt for the
lamb.
They have shown a picture of a lamb, the
chosen lamb is quite cute so it will make
the reader feel even worse for it.
The website URL is at the bottom of the
leaflet, there is a pink box behind it which
makes it stand out against the rest of the
text and shows that it is important.
There is a rip off part of the bottom of the page, this
makes the viewer interact with the leaflet, which will
make them engage more with it and are likely to then
remember that leaflet.
3. Instructions manual
The instructions are black and white, they don’t
contain any colour. This colour be because it is cheaper
to print without colour, so they have done this to save
money on printing costs. Another is that the product
may come in multiple different colours, this may cause
confusion for the viewer if they do not have that
coloured product.
They have included clarity and conciseness, this is
because the instructions is specifically on this one task
so they should just get straight to the point about the
task.
There are more bold parts of the text, these are usually
the most important parts of the text or the titles.
Having these parts in bold makes them stand out
against the rest of the text, this is useful for the words
that are important as they cold be for safety.
Simple images of the product that the instructions are
for have been included, in the case for these
instructions an amplifier. These images are very simple,
this is so that it is easy to identify what it is meant to
be. They have included images because it makes it
easier for the person using the instructions as it shows
them what they should be doing. They have also done
this to avoid ambiguity, by making it obvious for the
viewer.
There are lines put between some texts, these
are used to separate all the text, to show that
some parts of it are for different things. These
lines also are used almost as a ruler line
underneath the titles for the texts, this makes
them stand out more and shows that they are
the title.
They have used formal language, this is because
the instructions need to be easy to understand
and translate, so they don’t use informal
language.
There are grey boxes behind the main headlines
on the page, this makes them stand out against
the rest of the titles that are not as important as
this one. The grey box also goes with the lack of
colour.
The font used is very small, this could be because
there is a lot of writing needed to be put in a small
amount of space. Another reason is that the text
will be translated into multiple different languages
that will all be put into a small booklet.
4. How to guides
I chose a how to guide from the website WikiHow,
on the topic of setting up your own Dairy farm.
There are pictures for each of the the steps that
they have on the page. These pictures are
simplistic, this is so they are easy to understand.
They also show something to do with the step that
they match with, this will help the viewer so they
can visualize the step better and be clearer on what
they have to do.
The number of the parts have been clearly shown,
this is to avoid ambiguity by clearly showing what
should be done in which order. The number at the
top is in a green box, this is because colour of the
logo is green, also it makes the number stand out
more against the background.
They have written the text so that it has clarity, this
means that it is easy to read and understand. They
use more informal language, this is likely because
they are trying to connect with the reader.
They used bullet points to clearly lay out the ideas,
this makes it easier to read them, especially in a
certain order if needed. Having the bullet points
also makes the viewer read them in a certain
way/order.
The title of the page is in bold at the top
of the page, this makes it easy to read
and stand out against the rest of the
text. They have also done this with each
of the sub titles for each of the smaller
sections.
Sometimes when they have a statistic of
some kind they have a number next to
them, this then corresponds to the same
number on a list for ‘Sources and
Citations’ this shows that they reference
their sources, event though many of
their facts do not have a source for it.
5. Factual journalism
I chose a article about North Korea. It is a
factual writing, by the online newspaper called
‘RT’. Since it is a newspaper it means that they
are accurate, they will also not have any legal
constraints and will have certain codes of
practice that they have to follow.
They reference their sources for each of the
people that they mention, this shows that they
are getting the information from actual sources
and they are not making it all up. They are
being bias towards themselves since they have
used their own articles as sources, also they
have linked their social media on the top of the
page.
The headline is in bold font that is in a
larger size than the rest of the text, this
makes it stand out against the rest of
the text, and shows how it is the thing
that the viewer is meant to read first.
There is a question in the title, this
engages the reader
They have written the article
with clarity, this makes it easy for
the reader to understand that
point of the article.
They show pictures of the people that
they are claiming to have come back
from the dead, these pictures go with
the story by showing the people that
were supposedly killed. There is also a
video at the top of the page that shows
multiple different people that were
supposedly killed and people of North
Korea clapping at their leader. Under the
video is a small caption that explains the
video a little bit.
