Intro
A rectifier is an electrical device which converts an alternating
current into a direct current by allowing current to flow through it
in one direction only. It is often found in power supplies for
devices like radio, television and computer that require a steady
constant DC voltage (as would be produced by a battery). Its
output is smoothed by an electronic filter such as a capacitor.

Working
The transformer steps down the 220V main supply to 9
volts. (This is the RMS value of the alternating current).
During the 1st half cycle Diode D1 is
forward-biased and diode D2 is
reverse-biased. So current flows
only through D1.
During the next half cycle the D1 is
reversed-biased and D2 is forward-
biased so current flows only
through D2.
In subsequent half cycles, the above processes are
repeated. In both the cases, it is clear that current flows
through the resistor in only one direction. Even though
the voltage across
resistor is unidirectional,
it will still contain a few
AC components (ripples).
