Dear Reader,
Wish you a very warm welcome.
The MAGEX Weekly wishes you all a very happy
and prosperous Eid – ul – Adha.
To make a sacrifice means being willing to
sacrifice ourselves. It means giving up our time,
our energy, even our lives. It doesn’t have to be
splashy. It can be as quiet as dedicating our lives
to justice and truth and acts of compassion.
Sacrifice is the first and foremost step for
becoming successful in life.
All successful people had sacrificed some or the
other thing in order to achieve what they are
today. We are able to live happily and joyful
because our grandfathers have sacrificed a lot to
achieve what we are today.
Whenever in your life, you have to sacrifice
something, do not think over it. Go ahead! Surely
God must be planning something better for you.
God always takes something from an individual
in order to give them something much more
better than what he/she already had.
In other words, “If you do not sacrifice for what
you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice.”

Eid – ul – Adha
Mubarak
Eid – ul Adha (feast of the sacrifice) also known
as the “Sacrifice feast”, is the second of the two
Islamic festivals celebrated worldwide each
year.
In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid – ul – Adha
falls on the 10th
day of Dhul – Hijjah (12th
month).
Like Eid – ul – Fitr, Eid – ul – Adha begins with a
prayer of 2 rakats followed by a sermon
(khutbah). After the prayer Muslims who are
capable of paying Zakath (yearly charity of
2.5% of their wealth) offer sacrifice goat, or cow
or camel.
The first 12 days of Dhul – Hijjah are also very
significant for Hajj (pilgrimage) which is
compulsory once in a lifetime for each and
every Muslim with monetary and health
facilities.
The act of Hajj (pilgrimage) is followed from
Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) (Abraham). He was
ordered by Allah (Lord) to leave his beloved wife
Hajirah (Hagar) and his son Prophet Ismail
(PBUH) (Ishmael) in the valley of Makkah.
Makkah was at that time a barren land with no
trace of civilization nor any food and water.
Just for Allah they willed to sacrifice their
worldly pleasures. However without any trace
of food and water Hajirah ran between the two
hills Safa and Marwah, to quench the thirst of
water. Miraculously a water spring began to
flow in abundance under the feet of Baby
Prophet Ismail (PBUH) (Ishmael). This water is
known as Zam – Zam. This water is still
available in Makkah despite more than 10,000
years old and not even for a single second
the water has been stopped or dried off.
We have our wells dried off due to scarcity of
rain but Makkah lacks rainfall still Zam – Zam
well is never dried off though thousands of
pilgrims drink from it every day.
Once Prophet Ibrahim PBUH (Abraham) was
asked by his Lord to sacrifice his own son
Prophet Ismail PBUH (Ishmael). With no
hesitance, Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail
Peace be upon them agreed to fulfill their duty
towards Allah.
Meanwhile Shaitan (Satan) approached in 3
different forms to Prophet Ibrahim PBUH,
Prophet Ismail PBUH and Hajira to refrain them
from fulfilling their Lord’s duty. Each time he
received a rejection getting hit with pebbles
from each of them. This act is a main part of
Pilgrimage (Hajj) where Pilgrims gather 7
pebbles each day and hit the structure
(addressed as Shaithan). Another miracle is
there is no trace from where these pebbles come
before being picked (though more than 2.5
million pilgrims pick it every year), and no
traces of these pebbles after they are thrown.
While everything was prepared and the
moment Prophet Ismail PBUH was about to be
slaughtered, Allah replaced him with a ram
from the heaven (signifying that one should
never sacrifice a human life especially in the
name of God). Prophet Ibrahim PBUH had
shown that his love for Allah superseded all
others in submission to Allah’s command.
Muslims commemorate this ultimate act of
sacrifice every year during Eid – ul – Adha.

Blue Whale Game – What Parents need to know!
What is the Blue Whale Challenge and why
should parents be concerned about this game?
1. The Blue Whale challenge is an online game.
The game is named so because sometimes
whales beach themselves intentionally and
die.
2. In this game, an online administrator assigns
tasks to its participants. The participants are
given a period of 50 days to complete each
task. The players are expected to take photos
of them undertaking the challenge and
upload them as proofs for the curator's
approval. The last challenge is to commit
suicide.
3. Players of this game cannot stop playing
because they are blackmailed and cyber
bullied into completing the game.
4. This deadly game has spread all over the
globe, and in India there have been reports
(Repor1, Report2) of children harming
themselves and in a few cases even
committing suicides, which are allegedly
linked to Blue Whale Challenge.
5. More than six children across India in the
age group of 12-19 years have taken their
lives allegedly playing this game within a
span of two weeks.
Where can children access this game?
Blue Whale is not a freely downloadable game,
application or software. Children cannot access
it on their smart phones through app stores or
on social media platforms like Facebook. It is
shared among secretive groups on social
Media networks.
The creators seek out their players/victims and
send them an invitation to join.
What kind of challenges do the players face in
this game?
1. Carve with a razor “f57” on your hand; send
a photo to the curator.
2. Wake up at 4.20 a.m. and watch psychedelic
and scary videos that curator sends you.
3. Cut your arm with a razor along your veins,
but not too deep, only 3 cuts, send a photo to
the curator.
4. Draw a whale on a sheet of paper, send a
photo to curator.
5. If you are ready to “become a whale”, carve
“YES” on your leg. If not– cut yourself many
times (punish yourself)
6. Task with a cipher.
7. Carve “f40” on your hand, send a photo to
curator.
8. You have to overcome your fear.
9. Wake up at 4:20 a.m. and go to a roof (the
higher the better)
10. Carve a whale on your hand with a razor,
send a photo to curator.
11. Watch psychedelic and horror videos all
day.
12. Listen to music that “they” (curators) send
you.
13. Cut your lip
14. Poke your hand with a needle many times
15. Do something painful to yourself, make
yourself sick 17. Go to the highest roof you
can find, stand on the edge for some time.
16. Go to a bridge, stand on the edge.
17. Climb up a crane or at least try to do it.
18. The curator checks if you are trustworthy
19. Have a talk “with a whale” (with another
player like you or with a curator) in Skype
20. Go to a roof and sit on the edge with your
legs dangling.
21. The curator tells you the date of your death
and you have to accept it.
22. Wake up at 4:20 a.m. and go to rails (visit
any railroad that you can find).
23. Don’t talk to anyone all day.
24. Every day you wake up at 4:20 a.m.
25. Watch horror videos.
26. Listen to music that “they” send you.
27. Make 1 cut on your body per day.
28. Jump off a high building. Take your life.
The government has directed internet
companies to ban the game. Should parents still
be concerned?
1. Although the government has asked
companies such as Google, Facebook, Whats-
App, Instagram, Microsoft and Yahoo to imme-
diately take down any links leading to the
deadly game it is unclear how these companies
would make the game inaccessible. It is because
this game is not publicly available and freely
downloadable. It is a social media phenomenon
where conversations about this take place
secretively in closed social media groups. You
can only be part of the game if an administrator
contacts you and enlists you as a potential
whale, or candidate.
2. Also, it is now available under different
names such as A Silent House, A Sea of Whales
and Wake Me Up at 4:20 AM. Alternatively,
there could be other similar games available as
well.
Which age group is most prone to participating
in this game?
Tweens and teens (i.e. 12-19 years) the most
vulnerable group of Social Media, are most
prone to Blue Whale Challenge.
What are the signs in teens that might indicate
their inclination towards this game?
Most child psychologists say when a child tends
to stay by himself/herself, stops interacting with
family and friends, often talks about running
away from home or even death, or changes
eating and/or sleeping habits must be
immediately given special attention. These are
the basic symptoms of a child who may be
inclined towards participating in this online
game. Some relevant links to the signs and
symptoms may be found here and here.
How can parents prevent their children from
participating in such deadly online games or
intervene?
Here are a few tips on how you can keep your
child safe online:
1. Having correct information about an issue is
extremely important. The media reports on this
issue do not make it clear that the role of this
game/challenge in the recent cases of suicide
has not been verified yet. Your child probably
knows about the Blue Whale Challenge because
of the media frenzy around this issue. Having
said that, due to the uncertainty around this
issue, there is a need to take certain measures to
measures to inform children and interact with
them to avoid any mishaps.
2. Make sure that your child has access to age
appropriate online sites which do not promote
unethical behavior or violence.
3. Always ensure that your child accesses
internet from a computer placed in the family
space.
4. Talk to your child more often. Explore the
online world together and engage in interesting
activities demonstrating ethical and safe online
behavior.
5. Use parental controls on all the devices used
by your child. Monitor the screen time and keep
an eye on his/her online activities.
6. Be a role model to your child. Be conscious of
your own online activities.
7. Talk to other parents, share concerns if any
and discuss best ways to help your children.
8. Keep yourself updated with recent internet
phenomena.
9. Observe your child’s behavior closely. Be
alert to any unusual changes like moodiness,
less or no communication, lack of interest in
studies and falling grades. If you notice any
such changes, closely monitor his/her online
activities, talk to school authorities or consult a
child psychologist.
10. If you find out that your child is already
playing the Blue Whale Challenge, immediately
stop him/her from using the internet from any
devices.
11. Inform your local police authority about
what has happened and seek their advice on the
next safety measures.
How can teachers help?
• Teachers need to keep an eye on falling grades
and social behavior of the students.
• They need to monitor the behavior of each and
every child.
• They should look for anti-social behavior, they
should personally talk to such children who
don’t interact with the other children much or
are aloof. If they observe something that may
seem suspicious or alarming, they should
inform the school authorities immediately.
• Teachers should also ensure that children do
not use any gadgets during school hours.
• They should ensure that children are
sensitized about the pros and cons of the
internet from time to time.

Muscat
Muscat is the capital city of Oman, which is an Arab Country on the
southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The Sultan of Oman –
Sultan Qaboos bin Said, is the longest – serving ruler in the Middle
East ruling for about 47 years from July 23rd
1970. He is the chief of
staff of the armed forces, chairman of the Central Bank, Minister of
Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Trade of fish, dates and some
agricultural products along with tourism from a significant portion of
the economy of Oman. Oman is also one of the oldest human –
inhabited places on the planet nearly about 106,000 years ago. It is
also the oldest independent state in the Arab World. Oman has 91.1%
literacy rate. A city called ‘Bahla’ in Oman is known as the center for
pottery. Birds from 3 continents – Asia, Europe and Africa can be seen
in Oman. Hence, Oman has been called ‘the best – kept secret in the
world of bird watching’. Under the 1996 constitution’s “Basic Law of
the State”, Oman is an absolute Monarchy. Oman is also a member of
the United Nation and the Arab league. Almost all signs and writings
in Oman appear in both Arabic and English. Oil, Gas and a limited
quantity of Copper is exported from Oman.

Muscat, the capital of Oman, was occupied by the Portugese for a period of 140 years
(1508 – 1648). After the Portugese, the Ottomans took control of Oman, only to be
pushed out by the current line of leading sultans. However, it was once again occupied
briefly by Persia, but Oman finally succeeded in freeing itself. during this time, the
country was also known as Muscat and Oman. Interestingly, Oman is literally a terrorism
free country along with Qatar where terrorism is nonexistent as reported by the Global
Terrorism Index (GTI) report. Believe it or not, Oman is a country where crime is also
almost nonexistent. Omanis are also credited with being the greatest ship builders in the
world. Mountain Dew is the top selling beverage in Oman. Omanis are also among the
finest breeders of Arabian horses. Their horses are sold for hefty prices all over the world.
Omanis are allowed to consume alcohol under license and are limited to 10% of income
to be spent on alcohol. It is a tradition in Oman to greet a visitor with a bowl of dates,
qahwa and fruit. Omanis wear Dishdasha – an ankle length robe. Locals smoke
traditional shisha, known as hookah or hubbly bubbly. However Nargile is the proper
name. A component of the most valuable perfume in the world – Amouage – is produced
and traded in Oman. It is known as Frankincense and is available in its purest form for
purchase for OMR 50 per bag.

Masjid (Mosque) Exterior & Interior Photos
When in Oman there is one attraction that stands out
from the rest, which is known for its grand stature and
mystified history. The mosque used to have the world’s
largest carpet and chandelier, but Emiratis and Qataris
came to measure the interior and made bigger versions
in new mosques to steal the title. Regardless of titles and
records, the Mosque is still pretty impressive. The
chandelier is located in the centre of the men’s prayer
hall and measures a staggering 14 metres and weighs
8.5 tonnes. It holds 600,000 shining bright Swarovski
crystals, 24 carat gold plating and took more than four
years to complete. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is
one of the only mosques in Oman that allows non-
Muslim visitors. However, be aware of the rules when
entering and exploring the area. Children under ten are
not permitted into in the prayer halls and there is no
eating or sleeping in the prayer hall or use of cell
phones. Luckily, most of these rules help to give you a
peaceful and quiet experience in this fabulous building.
Although you may not be able to read any of the books,
the mosque library holds more than 20,000 books and is
an impressive sight.
The mosque was completed in 2001 and took six years
to build. It covers a massive area of 416,000 square
meters, and can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The
building itself is made up of 300,000 tonnes of
sandstone. In other words, go big or go home in Muscat.
Do not be surprised if you are approached by Omani
women offering you dates and coffee. Take this
opportunity to ask them about life and the culture. They
will be more than happy to share their stories and
insight. The small room with a fountain-looking
construction in the centre is the ablution room. This is
where worshippers come to perform the cleansing or
purification ritual before prayer. There are two forms of
cleansing, the lesser form (wudu) and the greater form
(ghusl). Different circumstances will determine which of
the two is needed. The Mosque is embellished in
beautiful, colourful mosaic patterns. There is no official
number stating how many stones have been used, but it
is sure an astounding sight. Take your time to walk the
halls and study the handcrafted details of the mosque. It
is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Date Palm Tree
The Date palm tree is one among the oldest trees
in the world. The Date Palm tree was cultivated
in the 5th
century BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia.
It has been cultivated in the Middle East for more
than 10,000 years.
The Date Palm tree is found in the Middle East,
the Canary Islands, South Africa, India and
California.
The botanical name for the Date Palm Tree is
Phoenix dactylifera. It belongs to the Palm
family. The Date Palm Tree is a tall and
evergreen tree that has no branches.
The Tree grows to about 23 m in height. The
trunk of the tree is surrounded by marks of old
leaf bases.
The tree trunk ends with a crown of leaves. Each
leaf is about 5 m in length and has a strong
midrib, with narrow pinnate leaflets on either
side of the midrib.
Floral bunches are found between the tree and
the leaf base. They are long and hang down from
the top of the Palm Tree.
The date fruit is a drupe and has only one seed.
The portion surrounding the seed is soft pulpy
and is edible.
Unripe dates are green in color, as they mature
they become a reddish brown or dark brown in
color.
Dates can be classified as soft, semi – soft, dry
dates. Chewy, dry dates stay for a longer time
Without getting spoiled when compared to other
date varieties. Dates can be frozen for a long time.
Uses of Date Palm trees:
In North Africa, Ghana and India the sap from the
Date Palm Tree is collected and used during the
conversion of sugar, alcoholic drink, and
molasses.
Date Pulp is processed into many forms such as
syrup and spreads as well as in biscuits, bread
puddings, sweets and other dishes.
The trunk of the Date Palm Tree is used to make
poles, beams, rafters, pillars, jetties and light foot
bridges.
They are cut into planks and are used for making
doors, shutters and staircases. The trunk is also
used for firewood.
The leaves are used for fencing, to make thatched
roofs and for religious purposes.
Leaf bases are used for fuel; the midribs of the
leaves are strong and used to make crates and
furniture.
The leaflets are sewn together to make baskets,
mats, fans and hats.

same milk with a mixture of cardamom powder and honey.
Night Blindness: The benefits of dates are extensive, and are
commonly employed to fight off various conditions affecting
the ear, nose, and throat. They have been discovered to reduce
the frequency of night blindness.
Abdominal Cancer: Research has pointed towards dates being a
legitimate way to reduce the risk and impact of abdominal
cancer. They work as a useful tonic for all age groups, and in
some cases, they work better than traditional medicines, and
are natural, so they don’t have any negative side effects on the
human body. They can also be quickly and easily digested for a
quick boost of energy.

Š The MAGEX Weekly
Health Benefits of Qahwa (Arabian Coffee):
 Anti – Inflammatory action: The antioxidants and phytonutrients in Qahwa
make it an anti – inflammatory drink. Phytonutrients are plant compounds that
have effects similar to those of antioxidants.
 Potential Cancer Prevention: The phytonutrients and antioxidants in Qahwa
are also forces that destroy the abnormal cells, including cancer cells.
 Vitamins and Minerals: The small amount of vitamins and minerals in Qahwa
is a bonus if the drink is consumed instead of soft drinks or creamy coffee
drinks.
 Anti – Aging: The antioxidants in both Arabic Coffee beans and cardamom
promote anti – aging and skin rejuvenation.
 Good Hydrating Candidate: Qahwa is low in sodium and high in potassium.
Drinks with high level of sodium cause dehydration. Even though Qahwa is a
diuretic (promotes the production of urine), it doesn’t cause dehydration
because it is usually consumed in small amounts.
 Regulates Blood Pressure: Low sodium and high – potassium also result in the
regulation of blood pressure. Always opt to add pure cardamom to your Qahwa
because it eliminates toxins from our body.
 Helps in late night stay: Drink Qahwa if you have to stay awake. However
avoid excess consumption of coffee (in any form) because it causes caffeine
addiction and dehydration.

  • 6. Dear Reader, Wish you a very warm welcome. The MAGEX Weekly wishes you all a very happy and prosperous Eid – ul – Adha. To make a sacrifice means being willing to sacrifice ourselves. It means giving up our time, our energy, even our lives. It doesn’t have to be splashy. It can be as quiet as dedicating our lives to justice and truth and acts of compassion. Sacrifice is the first and foremost step for becoming successful in life. All successful people had sacrificed some or the other thing in order to achieve what they are today. We are able to live happily and joyful because our grandfathers have sacrificed a lot to achieve what we are today. Whenever in your life, you have to sacrifice something, do not think over it. Go ahead! Surely God must be planning something better for you. God always takes something from an individual in order to give them something much more better than what he/she already had. In other words, “If you do not sacrifice for what you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice.” Shoaib Makki T.J. stmakki3@gmail.com Editor – In – Chief The MAGEX Weekly To submit an article or give content for any field: Email: themagexweekly@gmail.com To avail your subscriptions enter your email address in: http://www.mahsabmarketing.com/magazine.html Design and Editing: Shoaib Makki T.J. • 8. The MAGEX Weekly wishes you all a happy and blessed Eid – ul – Adha Mubarak
  • 9. Eid – ul Adha (feast of the sacrifice) also known as the “Sacrifice feast”, is the second of the two Islamic festivals celebrated worldwide each year. In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid – ul – Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhul – Hijjah (12th month). Like Eid – ul – Fitr, Eid – ul – Adha begins with a prayer of 2 rakats followed by a sermon (khutbah). After the prayer Muslims who are capable of paying Zakath (yearly charity of 2.5% of their wealth) offer sacrifice goat, or cow or camel. The first 12 days of Dhul – Hijjah are also very significant for Hajj (pilgrimage) which is compulsory once in a lifetime for each and every Muslim with monetary and health facilities. The act of Hajj (pilgrimage) is followed from Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) (Abraham). He was ordered by Allah (Lord) to leave his beloved wife Hajirah (Hagar) and his son Prophet Ismail (PBUH) (Ishmael) in the valley of Makkah. Makkah was at that time a barren land with no trace of civilization nor any food and water. Just for Allah they willed to sacrifice their worldly pleasures. However without any trace of food and water Hajirah ran between the two hills Safa and Marwah, to quench the thirst of water. Miraculously a water spring began to flow in abundance under the feet of Baby Prophet Ismail (PBUH) (Ishmael). This water is known as Zam – Zam. This water is still available in Makkah despite more than 10,000 years old and not even for a single second the water has been stopped or dried off. We have our wells dried off due to scarcity of rain but Makkah lacks rainfall still Zam – Zam well is never dried off though thousands of pilgrims drink from it every day. Once Prophet Ibrahim PBUH (Abraham) was asked by his Lord to sacrifice his own son Prophet Ismail PBUH (Ishmael). With no hesitance, Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail Peace be upon them agreed to fulfill their duty towards Allah. Meanwhile Shaitan (Satan) approached in 3 different forms to Prophet Ibrahim PBUH, Prophet Ismail PBUH and Hajira to refrain them from fulfilling their Lord’s duty. Each time he received a rejection getting hit with pebbles from each of them. This act is a main part of Pilgrimage (Hajj) where Pilgrims gather 7 pebbles each day and hit the structure (addressed as Shaithan). Another miracle is there is no trace from where these pebbles come before being picked (though more than 2.5 million pilgrims pick it every year), and no traces of these pebbles after they are thrown. While everything was prepared and the moment Prophet Ismail PBUH was about to be slaughtered, Allah replaced him with a ram from the heaven (signifying that one should never sacrifice a human life especially in the name of God). Prophet Ibrahim PBUH had shown that his love for Allah superseded all others in submission to Allah’s command. Muslims commemorate this ultimate act of sacrifice every year during Eid – ul – Adha. • 11. Blue Whale Game – What Parents need to know! What is the Blue Whale Challenge and why should parents be concerned about this game? 1. The Blue Whale challenge is an online game. The game is named so because sometimes whales beach themselves intentionally and die. 2. In this game, an online administrator assigns tasks to its participants. The participants are given a period of 50 days to complete each task. The players are expected to take photos of them undertaking the challenge and upload them as proofs for the curator's approval. The last challenge is to commit suicide. 3. Players of this game cannot stop playing because they are blackmailed and cyber bullied into completing the game. 4. This deadly game has spread all over the globe, and in India there have been reports (Repor1, Report2) of children harming themselves and in a few cases even committing suicides, which are allegedly linked to Blue Whale Challenge. 5. More than six children across India in the age group of 12-19 years have taken their lives allegedly playing this game within a span of two weeks. Where can children access this game? Blue Whale is not a freely downloadable game, application or software. Children cannot access it on their smart phones through app stores or on social media platforms like Facebook. It is shared among secretive groups on social Media networks. The creators seek out their players/victims and send them an invitation to join. What kind of challenges do the players face in this game? 1. Carve with a razor “f57” on your hand; send a photo to the curator. 2. Wake up at 4.20 a.m. and watch psychedelic and scary videos that curator sends you. 3. Cut your arm with a razor along your veins, but not too deep, only 3 cuts, send a photo to the curator. 4. Draw a whale on a sheet of paper, send a photo to curator. 5. If you are ready to “become a whale”, carve “YES” on your leg. If not– cut yourself many times (punish yourself) 6. Task with a cipher. 7. Carve “f40” on your hand, send a photo to curator. 8. You have to overcome your fear. 9. Wake up at 4:20 a.m. and go to a roof (the higher the better) 10. Carve a whale on your hand with a razor, send a photo to curator. 11. Watch psychedelic and horror videos all day. 12. Listen to music that “they” (curators) send you. 13. Cut your lip 14. Poke your hand with a needle many times 15. Do something painful to yourself, make yourself sick 17. Go to the highest roof you can find, stand on the edge for some time.
  • 12. 16. Go to a bridge, stand on the edge. 17. Climb up a crane or at least try to do it. 18. The curator checks if you are trustworthy 19. Have a talk “with a whale” (with another player like you or with a curator) in Skype 20. Go to a roof and sit on the edge with your legs dangling. 21. The curator tells you the date of your death and you have to accept it. 22. Wake up at 4:20 a.m. and go to rails (visit any railroad that you can find). 23. Don’t talk to anyone all day. 24. Every day you wake up at 4:20 a.m. 25. Watch horror videos. 26. Listen to music that “they” send you. 27. Make 1 cut on your body per day. 28. Jump off a high building. Take your life. The government has directed internet companies to ban the game. Should parents still be concerned? 1. Although the government has asked companies such as Google, Facebook, Whats- App, Instagram, Microsoft and Yahoo to imme- diately take down any links leading to the deadly game it is unclear how these companies would make the game inaccessible. It is because this game is not publicly available and freely downloadable. It is a social media phenomenon where conversations about this take place secretively in closed social media groups. You can only be part of the game if an administrator contacts you and enlists you as a potential whale, or candidate. 2. Also, it is now available under different names such as A Silent House, A Sea of Whales and Wake Me Up at 4:20 AM. Alternatively, there could be other similar games available as well. • 18. Masjid (Mosque) Exterior & Interior Photos
  • 19. When in Oman there is one attraction that stands out from the rest, which is known for its grand stature and mystified history. The mosque used to have the world’s largest carpet and chandelier, but Emiratis and Qataris came to measure the interior and made bigger versions in new mosques to steal the title. Regardless of titles and records, the Mosque is still pretty impressive. The chandelier is located in the centre of the men’s prayer hall and measures a staggering 14 metres and weighs 8.5 tonnes. It holds 600,000 shining bright Swarovski crystals, 24 carat gold plating and took more than four years to complete. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the only mosques in Oman that allows non- Muslim visitors. However, be aware of the rules when entering and exploring the area. Children under ten are not permitted into in the prayer halls and there is no eating or sleeping in the prayer hall or use of cell phones. Luckily, most of these rules help to give you a peaceful and quiet experience in this fabulous building. Although you may not be able to read any of the books, the mosque library holds more than 20,000 books and is an impressive sight. The mosque was completed in 2001 and took six years to build. It covers a massive area of 416,000 square meters, and can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The building itself is made up of 300,000 tonnes of sandstone. In other words, go big or go home in Muscat. Do not be surprised if you are approached by Omani women offering you dates and coffee. Take this opportunity to ask them about life and the culture. They will be more than happy to share their stories and insight. The small room with a fountain-looking construction in the centre is the ablution room. This is where worshippers come to perform the cleansing or purification ritual before prayer. There are two forms of cleansing, the lesser form (wudu) and the greater form (ghusl). Different circumstances will determine which of the two is needed. The Mosque is embellished in beautiful, colourful mosaic patterns. There is no official number stating how many stones have been used, but it is sure an astounding sight. Take your time to walk the halls and study the handcrafted details of the mosque. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
