Dear Reader,
Wish you a very warm welcome.
Everyone in life wants to be successful in all the
ways they want. If we go for education we would
like to pass in all examinations while some would
wish to get first rank. When we start a business
we want to become successful taking huge profits
from whatever the investments we make. Dream
in your life: Whenever you’re free in a day try to
dream yourself how you want to live your
lifestyle after a period of about 5 – 10 years.
People who know what they want and have set a
course for achieving their goals are generally
happier than those that just let life happen to
them. This wisdom is not new. Earl Nightingale
once said, “Don't wait for something outside of
yourself to make you happy in the future.” Ralph
Waldo Emerson encouraged goal setting by
stating that, “Once you make a decision, the
universe conspires to make it happen.”

RIDDLES
How is this possible!
An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn't know
which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy
something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but
there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not
fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his
father's fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?
 You can see me in water, but I never get
wet. What am I?
 You see a boat filled with people. You
look again, but this time you don't see a
single person on the boat. Why? Hint:
The boat has not sunk
 What five-letter word becomes shorter
when you add two letters to it?
 There is a word in the English language
in which the first two letters signify a

Massacre at Burma, Myanmar
The military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine
state could be leading to genocide, the United
Nations' top official on the subject says. More
than 140,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to
Bangladesh since August 25, bringing allegations
of mass killings and the systematic burning of
their villages by Myanmar security forces. The
violence was sparked when Rohingya insurgents
carried out coordinated attacks against police
posts, killing 12 officers. Retaliation from
soldiers, the paramilitary Border Guard Police
and Buddhist vigilantes has killed at least 370
people, according to the army's figure from
almost a week ago. But there are credible reports
of 130 people massacred in a single village,
including women and children. "When they are
being killed and forcibly transferred in a
widespread or systematic manner, this could
constitute ethnic cleansing and could amount to
crimes against humanity," Adama Dieng, the UN
special advisor for the prevention of genocide,
said. "In fact it can be the precursor to all the
egregious crimes — and I mean genocide. "We
are not yet there, we cannot say we are facing a
genocide, but it is time to take action." Myanmar,
where the majority of people are Buddhist, has
blocked access to the area, meaning the
Guardian cannot independently corroborate the
villagers’ accounts. The current wave of violence
is the worst so far, and rights groups have said it
could constitute a final campaign to rid
Myanmar of the Rohingya. Satellites have
recorded images of whole villages burnt to the
ground.
The suicide of 17-year-old medical student
Anitha after she failed to get admission since the
government failed to ensure that NEET (National
Eligibility and Entrance Test) was not
implemented has got the student community
holding large-scale protests and accusing the
state government and the Centre of driving her to
take the extreme step. Anitha, who hailed from
Ariyallur, a place 250 km from Chennai, had
committed suicide demoralised that her dream of
becoming a doctor would never be fulfilled. This
despite the fact that Anitha was a Plus-2 topper
and had managed to score 1176 marks out of
1200. While the state government had earlier
assured that NEET won't be included in the
placement and that it would ensure the unified
entrance system based on 12th score followed,
the AIADMK government at the last minute failed
to ensure this, thus denying Anitha a chance of
getting a medical seat. Kamal Haasan today
openly supported the demand for Tamil Nadu's
exemption from NEET, and advised youngsters
not to be complacent. "Don't rely on elders; you
are the elders of tomorrow. Just because you did
an agitation doesn’t think it's over, we need to
find a solution within next year," he said. He also
appeared to ask people to unite for a common
cause. "If you think freedom is just to breathe free
air, you are wrong as there is more to it, and if
you call this a freedom struggle, yes it is," he said.
But my suggestion is NEET exam will give us all
quality doctors with real interest and
involvement leading to development towards the
medical field.
Amazing facts about Sarahah
 Sarahah is a brainchild of Saudi developer
ZainAlabdin Tawfiq. He introduced Sarahah
about six months ago as a website. However,
he later realised that Sarahah would do
wonders as an app.
 Sarahah is Arabic term means 'honesty'. The
key idea behind designing the app is to allow
people send creative messages to each other.
 It is on June 13 that Tawfiq rolled out the app
to for both Android and iOS users.
 There's no way to directly reply to the
received messages via Sarahah.
 There'll be no name, no information about the
sender of the message anywhere.
 Sarahah is designed in a way that allows
users to send constructive messages.
 Tawfiq believed that there was a need for
constructive feedback in his workplace and
that is when he thought of creating
something like Sarahah.
 The application has raised concerns among
parents and teachers. A review that was
posted on Google Play reads, "My 13-year-old
sister uses this and she got a death threat
aimed at our 2-year-old brother." After such
incidents took place, many parents have
reported that the app and said that this is "the
newest platform for cyber bullying".
 Sarahah is still in developing stage and comes
with a lot of security concerns.
 Several people worry about their identity
being revealed.
A Daughter’s Gift
A man punished his 3 year old daughter for
wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money
was very scarce and he became infuriated when
the child tried to decorate a box to put under the
Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought
the gift to her father the next morning and said,
“This for you, Daddy”.
The man was embarrassed by his earlier
overreaction, but his anger flared again when he
found out the box was empty. He yelled at her,
stating, “Don’t you know when you give someone
a present, there is suppose to be something
inside?” The little girl looked up at him with tears
in her eyes and cried, “Oh Daddy, it’ not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box.
They’re all for you, Daddy”.
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for
her forgiveness.
Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It is also told that her
father kept that gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was
discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the
child who had put it there.
“In a very real sense, each one of us, as human beings, has been given a gold
container filled with unconditional love from our children, family members, friends
and God. There is simply no reason, no other possession any could hold, more
precious than this”.

Never Feel Dejected
Once, there was this guy, who
was in love with a girl. She
wasn’t the most beautiful and
gorgeous but for him, she was
everything. He used to dream
about her, about spending the
rest of life with her. His friends
told him, “Why do you dream so
much about her when you don’t
even know if she loves you or not? First, tell her your feelings, and get to know if
she likes you or not”.
He felt that was the right way. The girl knew from the beginning, that this guy loves
her. One day when he proposed, she rejected hi. His friends thought he would take
alcohol, drugs, etc and ruin his life. To their surprise, he was not depressed.
When they asked him how was it that he is not sad, he replied, “Why should I feel
bad? I lost one who never loved me and she lost the one who really loved and cared
for her”.
“True Love is hard to get. Love is all about giving to other person without greed of
gaining anything in return, if other person rejects it, it’s him/her who will be losing
the most important thing in life. So never feel dejected.”
Puducherry
The earlier name of this territory was Pondicherry and it was changed
to Puducherry in 20 September 2006.
French first established their foothold in Puducherry in 1673.
Dutch arrived earlier on this land and there were few skirmishes with
French for getting control of the then Pondicherry.
It was declared Union territory in 1962. It was handed over to India by
the French in 1954.
Former capital of Pondicherry was Madras from 1948 to 1954.
Puducherry is the unique among all 7 union territories as it has its
own legislature and elected Chief Minister.

Also known as ‘White Town’
 Pondicherry has been built by following an excellent town planning idea. The place
is better known as White Town.
 Pondicherry celebrates Independence Day on August 16 while the rest of the
nation celebrates it on August 15.
 There is an ancient Ganesh Temple at which an Elephant takes the coins from
hands of the devotees and blesses them.
 Pondicherry is mentioned in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
 There are number of statues established on the Promenade Beach, which fringes
White Town. The most important statue here is that of Mahatma Gandhi. Hence,
the beach is also called Mahatma Gandhi Beach.

French War Memorial
In 1971, The French War Memorial was built to commemorate
the French soldiers who lost their lives during the World War II.
On every July 14, a ceremony to remember the sacrifice of
French martyrs is held here.
Old Light House
In the 19th
century, the only light to guide ships
coming to Puducherry was atop the Red Hills which
was inadequate. The project was finally taken up
during the tenure of Governor Saint Simon in 1835.
Louis Guerre was the engineer of the project. The
foundation stone for the lighthouse was laid at the
end of 1835 and the inauguration ceremony took
place in February 1836. The height of the
lighthouse is 29 meters. It has a round tower and a
square base. The cost of construction was 10,000
francs (Rs. 6,72,704/-). The foundation has a depth
of 9 meters. It’s light beam could be seen from a
distance of 15 miles. The light source consisted of 6
oil lamps and two reflectors. The light source was
converted to electric lamps in 1913. The power of
lamp was increased in 1931. The new lamp had a
range of 26 nautical miles. It took 36 seconds for
one full rotation of the beam.

Arikamedu, which means “eroding mud”, is
located at around seven kilometres from
Pondicherry. The city is located along the
beautiful Ariyankuppam river and is believed to
be the only city with an archaeological record of
Roman presence in India. Having started out as a
fishing village, Arikamedu soon became a unique
bead-making site as it manufactured beads made
of both stone and glass. Various textiles, breads,
terracotta artifacts and gold and semi precious
jewellery were exported to Greco Roman ports
and other countries in the East from Arikamedu.
Arikamedu’s glass bead making site was
considered as “mother of all bead centers” in the
world.
Wines in amphora jars, cups and plates of Terra
Sigillata (fine red Roman clay pots) and other
various ceramic products were imported by
Tamil while products like beads, terracotta
objects, glass, gems, plants, spices were exported.
Discovered in the 1930’s, the town was
excavated three times in the 1940’s. The
excavation credit of this place is often given to
Mortimer Wheeler in 1945 as he was the most
known archaeologist associated with it. Today
Arikamedu just consists of walls after being
damaged by the cyclone Thane in 2011. The only
structure still standing tall are the walls of The
French Mission house built in 18th
century.

Kanakasabai Subburathinam popularly called Bharathidasan) was a 20th-century Tamil poet
and rationalist whose literary works handled mostly socio-political issues. His writings served as a
catalyst for the growth of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. In addition to poetry, his views
found expression in other forms such as plays, film scripts, short stories and essays.

Sessile Oak
Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) is a deciduous
broadleaf tree native to the UK and most of
Europe.
The Sessile Oak is so names because, unlike the
English, or pedunculate oak, its acorns are not
carried on stalks (peduncles) but directly on
their outer twigs (sessile).
They can grow up to 20 – 40 m tall. As oaks
mature they form a broad and spreading crown
with sturdy branches beneath.
Their open canopy enables light to penetrate
through to the woodland floor, allowing
bluebells and primroses to grow below, and their
smooth and silvery brown bark becomes rugged
and deeply fissured with age.
Oak trees support more wildlife than any other
native trees. They provide a habitat for more
than 280 species of insect, which provides food
for birds and other predators.
The bark is also a habitat for mosses, lichens and
liverworts and deadwood cavities for nesting
birds and roosting bats.
The soft leaves break down with ease in autumn
and form a rich leaf mould beneath the tree,
supporting beetles and numerous fungi, such as
the oak bug milk cap.
It is the official national tree of Ireland and is
native to most of Europe. It is commonly located
in hilly regions.
The Oak is held in high regard across most
cultures in Europe. It was sacred to many gods
including Zeus (Greek), Jupiter (Roman) and
Dagda (Celtic). Each of these Gods ruled over
thunder and lightning, and oak trees are prone to
lightning strikes as they are often the tallest living
feature in landscape.
Oaks produce one of the hardest and most
durable timbers available. It has been a prized
hardwood timber or thousands of years, was the
primary ship building material until the mid –
19th
century and remains a popular wood for
architectural beams.
Traditionally the leaves, bark and acorns were
believed to heal many medical ailments including
diarrhea, inflammation and kidney stones.
Modern uses of Oak include flooring, wine
barrels and firewood.
Historically humans collected acorns and
processed them into flour for bread making.
These culinary techniques have mostly died out of
following the domestication of wheat production
10,000 years ago, leaving the harvest for wild
birds and mammals.

Healthcare
It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of
gold and silver.
9 Beauty tips for Gorgeous Skin and Hair
1. For dull, oily and combination skin:
Massage the skin with iced yoghurt and sprinkle
some sugar along with it. Now take orange
halves and scrub gently until the granules melt.
Wash the face with iced water and see the
difference.
2. For dull, tired and dry skin: Massage the
skin with papaya. Then make a scrub by mixing
oats and honey along with a little cold milk and
scrub the skin. Wash off with ice cold milk and
water and pat dry.
3. Suffering from frizzy hair: Try this simple,
quick and easy-to-make spray. Take slices of two
lemons and simmer in two cups of water until it
reduces to half the amount. Pour the liquid into a
sprits bottle and spray on your hair. Not only will
there be a wonderful natural sheen but static
and fly away hair will be gone!
4. For natural hair color: If you have a
brownish tinge in your hair and don't have the
time to henna or colour it, then take a few sprigs
of rosemary from the kitchen shelf and simmer
them in 2 cups of water along with 2 tsp black
tea until it reduces to half the quantity. Mix with
1/4cup of shampoo and every time you shampoo,
use this mixture. Leave the shampoo in your hair
for about 15 minutes and see the difference it
makes.
5. For a smooth back: Take 1 cup of sea salt
and mix it with half a cup of olive oil. Add 5
drops of sandalwood oil and mix well. Store in a
jar and scrub the areas of your body you want to
flaunt. Wipe off with a wet towel.
6. Dealing with under eye bags and dark circles:
Take used chamomile tea bags and store them in
the freezer. Grate half a cucumber and massage
around eye area and then lie down with the tea
bags on your eyes for 10 minutes.
7. Instant face lift: Wash your face with ice water
or simply rub and ice cube with a tsp of honey on
the face. Beat an egg white until it peaks and
brush onto your skin and let dry. You will feel the
stretch in the skin. Wash face with icy cold
water.
8. Tired eyes: Long hours at work, then shopping
and getting things organized for the festive
season can be tiring. Take iced spring water in a
bowl and add a few drops of rose water, 2-3
drops of honey and immerse one eye into it. You
can also open your eye a little and then close it.
Throw away the liquid and make the same water
for the other eye and repeat the process. After
this, splash the eyes with cold mineral water.
There may be slight redness for some time but it
will go away soon and your eyes will feel
refreshed in minutes.
9. Quick Hair Care: Don't have the time to
shampoo and blow dry your hair even though it
is oily? Well, sweat not. Sprinkle talcum and
amla powder onto your hair brush and overturn
the hair over your head and brush from the nape
of the neck to the tips .Now throw your hair back
and voila you have bouncy oil free hair in
minutes! So these are just a few of my secret
'insta' beauty recipes. Use them and enjoy but
never substitute them for a regular skin and hair
care regime. © The MAGEX Weekly

Beef Steak – Frites
Ingredients:
 1-1/2 lb (680 g) yellow-fleshed potatoes
Scrubbed
 1 tbsp (15 mL) olive oil
 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
 1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper
 1 lb (454 g) beef steak, cut in 4 portions

 1/3 cup (75 mL) mayonnaise
 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh chives
 2 tsp (10 mL) Dijon mustard
 1 tsp (5 mL) lemon juice
Steak-frites, meaning "steak and fries" in
French, is a very common and popular dish
served in brasseries throughout Europe
consisting of steak paired with French fries. It
is considered by some to be the national dish
of Belgium and France, which both claim to be
the places of its invention. Historically,
the rump steak was commonly used for this
dish. More typically at the present time, the
steak is an entrecôte also called rib eye, or
scotch fillet (in Australia), pan-fried rare
("saignant" - literally "bloody"), in a pan
reduction sauce, although hollandaise or
béarnaise sauce are not uncommon, served
with deep-fried potatoes (French fries).
Procedure (Beef Steak Frites)
 Cut potatoes into ½ - inch (1cm) thick wedges; toss with each of the oil, salt
and pepper.
 Spread on parchment paper – lined baking sheet; bake in 450 degrees F
(230 degrees C) oven, turning once, until tender, about 30 minutes. Broil
until golden brown, about 3 minutes.
 Meanwhile, sprinkle steak with thyme and remaining salt and pepper. In
skillet, heat remaining oil over medium – heat; cook steak, turning once,
until medium – rare, about 6 minutes.
 Transfer to cutting board and tent with foil; let stand for 10 minutes.
 In small bowl, combine mayonnaise, chives, mustard and lemon juice. Serve
along with steaks as dipping sauce for potatoes.

  • 6. Dear Reader, Wish you a very warm welcome. Everyone in life wants to be successful in all the ways they want. If we go for education we would like to pass in all examinations while some would wish to get first rank. When we start a business we want to become successful taking huge profits from whatever the investments we make. Dream in your life: Whenever you’re free in a day try to dream yourself how you want to live your lifestyle after a period of about 5 – 10 years. People who know what they want and have set a course for achieving their goals are generally happier than those that just let life happen to them. This wisdom is not new. Earl Nightingale once said, “Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future.” Ralph Waldo Emerson encouraged goal setting by stating that, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Shoaib Makki T.J. stmakki3@gmail.com Editor – In – Chief The MAGEX Weekly To submit an article or give content for any field: Email: themagexweekly@gmail.com To avail your subscriptions enter your email address in: http://www.mahsabmarketing.com/magazine.html Design and Editing: Shoaib Makki T.J. • 7. RIDDLES How is this possible! An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn't know which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father's fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?  You can see me in water, but I never get wet. What am I?  You see a boat filled with people. You look again, but this time you don't see a single person on the boat. Why? Hint: The boat has not sunk  What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?  There is a word in the English language in which the first two letters signify a male, the first three letters signify a female, the first four signify a great man, and the whole word, a great woman. What is the word?  Which word does not belong in the following list: Stop cop mop chop prop shop or crop? Did You Know??? • 9. Massacre at Burma, Myanmar The military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine state could be leading to genocide, the United Nations' top official on the subject says. More than 140,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since August 25, bringing allegations of mass killings and the systematic burning of their villages by Myanmar security forces. The violence was sparked when Rohingya insurgents carried out coordinated attacks against police posts, killing 12 officers. Retaliation from soldiers, the paramilitary Border Guard Police and Buddhist vigilantes has killed at least 370 people, according to the army's figure from almost a week ago. But there are credible reports of 130 people massacred in a single village, including women and children. "When they are being killed and forcibly transferred in a widespread or systematic manner, this could constitute ethnic cleansing and could amount to crimes against humanity," Adama Dieng, the UN special advisor for the prevention of genocide, said. "In fact it can be the precursor to all the egregious crimes — and I mean genocide. "We are not yet there, we cannot say we are facing a genocide, but it is time to take action." Myanmar, where the majority of people are Buddhist, has blocked access to the area, meaning the Guardian cannot independently corroborate the villagers’ accounts. The current wave of violence is the worst so far, and rights groups have said it could constitute a final campaign to rid Myanmar of the Rohingya. Satellites have recorded images of whole villages burnt to the ground.
  • 10. The suicide of 17-year-old medical student Anitha after she failed to get admission since the government failed to ensure that NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) was not implemented has got the student community holding large-scale protests and accusing the state government and the Centre of driving her to take the extreme step. Anitha, who hailed from Ariyallur, a place 250 km from Chennai, had committed suicide demoralised that her dream of becoming a doctor would never be fulfilled. This despite the fact that Anitha was a Plus-2 topper and had managed to score 1176 marks out of 1200. While the state government had earlier assured that NEET won't be included in the placement and that it would ensure the unified entrance system based on 12th score followed, the AIADMK government at the last minute failed to ensure this, thus denying Anitha a chance of getting a medical seat. Kamal Haasan today openly supported the demand for Tamil Nadu's exemption from NEET, and advised youngsters not to be complacent. "Don't rely on elders; you are the elders of tomorrow. Just because you did an agitation doesn’t think it's over, we need to find a solution within next year," he said. He also appeared to ask people to unite for a common cause. "If you think freedom is just to breathe free air, you are wrong as there is more to it, and if you call this a freedom struggle, yes it is," he said. But my suggestion is NEET exam will give us all quality doctors with real interest and involvement leading to development towards the medical field.
  • 11. Amazing facts about Sarahah  Sarahah is a brainchild of Saudi developer ZainAlabdin Tawfiq. He introduced Sarahah about six months ago as a website. However, he later realised that Sarahah would do wonders as an app.  Sarahah is Arabic term means 'honesty'. The key idea behind designing the app is to allow people send creative messages to each other.  It is on June 13 that Tawfiq rolled out the app to for both Android and iOS users.  There's no way to directly reply to the received messages via Sarahah.  There'll be no name, no information about the sender of the message anywhere.  Sarahah is designed in a way that allows users to send constructive messages.  Tawfiq believed that there was a need for constructive feedback in his workplace and that is when he thought of creating something like Sarahah.  The application has raised concerns among parents and teachers. A review that was posted on Google Play reads, "My 13-year-old sister uses this and she got a death threat aimed at our 2-year-old brother." After such incidents took place, many parents have reported that the app and said that this is "the newest platform for cyber bullying".  Sarahah is still in developing stage and comes with a lot of security concerns.  Several people worry about their identity being revealed.
  • 12. A Daughter’s Gift A man punished his 3 year old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was very scarce and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This for you, Daddy”. The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating, “Don’t you know when you give someone a present, there is suppose to be something inside?” The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried, “Oh Daddy, it’ not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They’re all for you, Daddy”. The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness. Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It is also told that her father kept that gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there. “In a very real sense, each one of us, as human beings, has been given a gold container filled with unconditional love from our children, family members, friends and God. There is simply no reason, no other possession any could hold, more precious than this”. © The MAGEX Weekly
  • 13. © The MAGEX Weekly Never Feel Dejected Once, there was this guy, who was in love with a girl. She wasn’t the most beautiful and gorgeous but for him, she was everything. He used to dream about her, about spending the rest of life with her. His friends told him, “Why do you dream so much about her when you don’t even know if she loves you or not? First, tell her your feelings, and get to know if she likes you or not”. He felt that was the right way. The girl knew from the beginning, that this guy loves her. One day when he proposed, she rejected hi. His friends thought he would take alcohol, drugs, etc and ruin his life. To their surprise, he was not depressed. When they asked him how was it that he is not sad, he replied, “Why should I feel bad? I lost one who never loved me and she lost the one who really loved and cared for her”. “True Love is hard to get. Love is all about giving to other person without greed of gaining anything in return, if other person rejects it, it’s him/her who will be losing the most important thing in life. So never feel dejected.”

  • 21. Arikamedu, which means “eroding mud”, is located at around seven kilometres from Pondicherry. The city is located along the beautiful Ariyankuppam river and is believed to be the only city with an archaeological record of Roman presence in India. Having started out as a fishing village, Arikamedu soon became a unique bead-making site as it manufactured beads made of both stone and glass. Various textiles, breads, terracotta artifacts and gold and semi precious jewellery were exported to Greco Roman ports and other countries in the East from Arikamedu. Arikamedu’s glass bead making site was considered as “mother of all bead centers” in the world. Wines in amphora jars, cups and plates of Terra Sigillata (fine red Roman clay pots) and other various ceramic products were imported by Tamil while products like beads, terracotta objects, glass, gems, plants, spices were exported. Discovered in the 1930’s, the town was excavated three times in the 1940’s. The excavation credit of this place is often given to Mortimer Wheeler in 1945 as he was the most known archaeologist associated with it. Today Arikamedu just consists of walls after being damaged by the cyclone Thane in 2011. The only structure still standing tall are the walls of The French Mission house built in 18th century. • 25. Sessile Oak Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) is a deciduous broadleaf tree native to the UK and most of Europe. The Sessile Oak is so names because, unlike the English, or pedunculate oak, its acorns are not carried on stalks (peduncles) but directly on their outer twigs (sessile). They can grow up to 20 – 40 m tall. As oaks mature they form a broad and spreading crown with sturdy branches beneath. Their open canopy enables light to penetrate through to the woodland floor, allowing bluebells and primroses to grow below, and their smooth and silvery brown bark becomes rugged and deeply fissured with age. Oak trees support more wildlife than any other native trees. They provide a habitat for more than 280 species of insect, which provides food for birds and other predators. The bark is also a habitat for mosses, lichens and liverworts and deadwood cavities for nesting birds and roosting bats. The soft leaves break down with ease in autumn and form a rich leaf mould beneath the tree, supporting beetles and numerous fungi, such as the oak bug milk cap. It is the official national tree of Ireland and is native to most of Europe. It is commonly located in hilly regions. The Oak is held in high regard across most cultures in Europe. It was sacred to many gods including Zeus (Greek), Jupiter (Roman) and Dagda (Celtic). Each of these Gods ruled over thunder and lightning, and oak trees are prone to lightning strikes as they are often the tallest living feature in landscape. Oaks produce one of the hardest and most durable timbers available. It has been a prized hardwood timber or thousands of years, was the primary ship building material until the mid – 19th century and remains a popular wood for architectural beams. Traditionally the leaves, bark and acorns were believed to heal many medical ailments including diarrhea, inflammation and kidney stones. Modern uses of Oak include flooring, wine barrels and firewood. Historically humans collected acorns and processed them into flour for bread making. These culinary techniques have mostly died out of following the domestication of wheat production 10,000 years ago, leaving the harvest for wild birds and mammals. © The MAGEX Weekly
