3. URINARY TRACT ANTI-INFECTIVE AGENTS
Urinary anti-infectives are medicines used to treat or
prevent infections of the urinary tract, which is the
passage through which urine flows from the kidneys
out of the body.
Normally, no bacteria or other disease-causing
organisms live in the bladder.
Likewise the urethra the tube-like structure that carries
urine from the bladder to the outside of the body
usually does not contain any bacteria, or not enough to
cause problems.
But the bladder, urethra, and other parts of the urinary
tract may become infected when disease causing
organisms enter it from other body regions or from
outside the body.
Urinary ant infective are used to treat such infections.
7. 1. Norfloxacin:
Storage: Store protected from light and moisture in well
closed air tight container.
Uses :
(1) Norfloxacin is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract
infections.
(ii) It is generally not effective against obligate anaerobic
bacteria.
(iii) Uncomplicated gonorrhea.
(iv) It is also good for bacterial diarrheas, because high
concentrations are present in the gut.

(ii) Norfloxacin Tablets I.P.
(iii) Norfloxacin suspension I.P.

Storage: Store protected from light and moisture

Uses:
For postexposure treatment of inhalational
anthrax
1) It been used for chancroid,
2) Antibacterial gonococcal urethritis.
3) Used for disseminated gonorrhea.
4) In controlling venereal diseases.
5) It is used to treat Chronic infections
characterized by renal tissue involvement.
6) It widely used for controlling bronchitis and
pneumonia.
13. 3. Ofloxacin
Chemical Structure:
Chemical Name: 7-fluoro-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-6-(4-
methylpiperazin-1-yl)-10-oxo-4-oxa-1-azatricyclo
[7.3.1]trideca-5(13),6,8,11-tetraene-11-carboxylic acid
14. Storage: Store protected from light and moisture in

Uses:
1) Ofloxacin has been approved for the treatment of
infections of the lower respiratory tract, including
chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.
2) Used for the treatment of pelvic inflammatory
disease.
3) Treatment of acute gonococcal urethritis.
4) For prostatitis caused by E. coli. Infections of the
skin and soft tissues ofloxacin infusion.
16. 4. Moxifloxacin :
Storage: It is stored in tightly-closed containers
protected from light and moisture.
Uses:
(1) Moxifloxacin and levofloxacin are the most
commonly used second-line anti TB drugs
(ii) Moxifloxacin is primarily used for pneumonias.
(iii) Bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, in which
efficacy is comparable to B-lactam
