3. MASTHEAD
Simple – clear – bold – sans serif font
– capital letters – at the top of the
page – left hand side – stands out –
eye catching – brand awareness –
colour contrasts. Another Magazine who
did this similarly is Q.
4. SELL LINE
I used a sell line with direct mode of address
and to relate to my masthead. Other
magazines that do this are Q magazine and
NME
5. MAIN IMAGE
Medium close up ( common convention) – single
person shot – links to main story – mise en scene
connects audience and artist – reception theory –
subject is prominent on the page -
HEADER ‘Exclusive’ creates engagement with audience – text has influence –
The effects model – buzz word ‘EXCLUSIVE’ – stands-out –
exclusivity is informing the unknown (uses and grat).
6. FEATURES
Insight into features included
– informative (uses and grat)
– entices audience – house
style – contrast to
background
Example in another
magazine
7. PULL QUOTES
Pull quotes – creates questions and engagement
with the reader – entices the audience
Magazines that use there conventions:
Billboard

Q MAGAZINE EXAMPLES
10. HOUSE STYLE
The house style challenges usual conventions –
I chose blue white and grey as I wanted a softer
house style as opposed to the very vivid red
white and black.
Magazines that challenge the red, black and
white house style:
12. DATE AND ISSUE NUMBER
Recent information – informative (uses and grat) – keeps regular
readers up to date – placed at top of page meaning it would be seen
as one of the first.
IMAGES
The images are presented in a thumbnail way, which allows variety of images
to be on the page – no overlapping – creates a professional look.
13. COLUMNS
I used columns as they bring an organised look to the page, and I
generally found it in most other magazines as a common convention.
The fact it look neat and tidy avoids overlapping, and no crowding –
easy navigation.
NUMBERING
The numbering stands out and allows easy navigation – suits a young
audience – creates shortcuts – convenience – informing whats included
inside (uses and grat) – in keeping with house style – not overlapping.
14. SPECIAL FEATURES
The title is bold, and simple. It is eye catching and
informs what they need to know(uses and grat). Short
description which gives an insight but also wants you
reading more.
15. EDITORS NOTE Editors notes in my content page.
Although none of the magazines I
have researched have an editors
note I have seen them in other
genres of magazines I thought it
would be relevant for the first
issue of my magazine to have a
editors note. I used different
fonts for the introductory
headlines and I used different
fonts for other parts of the stage.
16. SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS &
COMPETITION
In my research I could not find a contents age without social media
and I liked the idea of being in contact with them so I incorporated it
with mine. Social media is a very popular and heavily used amongst
my target audience therefore, it would not make sense if it was not
there. It also means that they can inform us if there is anything wrong
or the things they want to see or don’t which is brilliant as it allows
us to listen, and always keep them happy.
Page Numbers
Page number – informative – brand awareness – professional
consistency
Many magazines do this.
Q and Rolling stones both do...
18. LAYOUT
I used a regular convention of
having a whole page for the image
however I put it on the right hand
side whereas it is usually on the
right hand side. I did this as I
wanted the image to be the most
important thing but also
emphasize the perception of
teenage rebellion.
The name of the artist is bold and
big and next to it a highlighted bar
to say exclusive to emphasize its
important and the way the
audience should be ‘wowed’ by it.
19. IMAGE
For the double page spread I used a
mid side angle shot’ middle close ups a
common convention for a double page
spread.
20. TEXT
I used large transparent letters across the page and did
not do it house style but different. It is super faint and it is
easy to read, so it is still effective.
I have the page split up in three and found that was a
common convention through my research, so I like how
organised it looked and I attempted to do it on my own.
21. The Artist name is
bold and effective.
Although on a lot of
magazines they are
usually small yet
bold, I chose to do
mine big.
