4. Masthead
Large, Bold and simple. Its placed in the most common place of
the left top corner, this is because when placed above the head
it is visible above the head and creates brand awareness
(develop convention). Permitting a dark bold colour- gains
attention- located typically- easy to detect. The type of font
used is quiet different but very quirky. Also the two letters are
short but very effective for readers and potential readers, and
shows a simplistic style.
Other magazine are shown bellow:
5. Main image Conventions of a medium close up and
singular person who is covering the main
story- Direct mode of address- connects artists
and audience- personal relationships (Uses
and Grat)- Dramatic shadowing on one side of
the face- contrasting light defiance and to cate
the eye- the light direction highlights
important.
Other magazines use this: (Oyster and Vibe)
6. Tag line
“Exclusive interview” creates engagement with the audience-
Exclusivity provided- text has influence- The effect model- Buzz word
“exclusive” is informing on the unknown ( uses and grats need model).
Magazine who use this: (NME and Vibe)
7. Anchor text
Name – entices fans- anchors to the image - Insight to the main story line
– edgy- links with the house style- drop shadow helps stand out against
the image- encourages fans to buy.
Other magazines who do this is: (Q, Billboard, Oyster)
8. House style
Pink/Brown/Black/Grey. I chose these colours
because I think that they compliment each
other well, which means that the text and the
image would be distinguished between each
other. It gives of a simplistic style. I selected the
model and set the mise en scene with black and
grey to match the house style. The most
important things on the page are the darkest
writing on the page, because it contrasts the
most with the highlights on the main images
face. Using Black and grey is a common
convention in magazine shown bellow:
11. Date
Shows recently- informative (Uses and Grat)- regular readers can keep up to date- positioned near the top for first
Viewing- bold but smaller text because its not as important as the masthead.
Magazines that use this shown bellow:
Columns
As a common convention, contents pages are split into 3 columns- organises and structures- like an article- framed
Perception for professional finish – no crowding or overlapping
Billboard uses this convention in all their issues:
12. Features
Bold feature title- eye catching- short simple- different font size is contrasting
-breaks down magazine- easy navigation
Short description of feature pages- entices reader- Informing of what’s included
(Uses and Grat)
Altercation in colours and co-ordinating numbers for eye catching and separation
Needs- not to heavy text
Magazines which do this;
13. Social networking
This isn’t a convention I found in any of my research. But I found it to be
a relevant feature to include. In order to gain a customer base for the
new magazine, it seemed logical to include and create ways to reach the
audience between each month releases. I also means I am reaching my
target audience more effectively and marketing my product to its best
ability.
Masthead
This isn’t a common convention I found but one which I saw on the occasion. My masthead
Was already small so there was no reason to brevet it. But I included it for brand awareness. This makes links with my
Front cover masthead for a logo which would create a identifiable image, to be constant in issues making it professional.
14. Editors notes
Amongst my research I didn’t come across an editors choice box, but I have
seen many outside the genre of music magazine. As the first issue I felt there
needed to be introductory letter. By doing this it also creates a personal
relationship from the editor to the readers (Uses and Grat). The introductory
heading is made large writing to attract readers eyes, there is then a
differentiation in front to separate the text and a signature to create that
personal relationship and “letter” or “note” feel.
Numbering
Bold page numbers- easy navigation- meets young audiences- creates
Shortcuts- convinces- linked with the features – informing what's going
On inside (Uses and Grat)- feature numbers co- ordinate colour with
House style and have transparent effect so no overpowering to contents. Many magazines uses this as shown on next slide:
15.
16. Images
Into thumb nails positioning- includes a variety –
Reflects against multiple genre music included- the brown and pink
Still shows through to meet the house theme- shows constancy –
Organised boxes – same size images for three images-
Professional look- no overlapping/ not to text heavy for an
Overwhelming approach.
Other magazines use the thumb nail positioning e.g.
19. Text
Common convention of alterations in font and colour- contrasting-The
pink writing draws attention to subheadings- highlights important
features- separates and divides paragraphs
Used in other magazines:
20. Tag line
Creates engagement with the audience- exclusively provided-
text has influenced- the effects model- buzz word
The effect and convention is used in other music magazine as
shown:
Pull Quote
Pull Quote- insight to the main article- creates engagement and questions- personal
relationship to those experienced (Uses and Grat)
Used in other magazines shown bellow:
21. Anchor text
Anchors name to the image- intro title- entices fans- informative (Uses
and Grat)- insight to main story topic- bold and contrasting
Other magazines use as shown:
22. Image
Direct mode of address-
personal relationship (Uses
and Grat)- medium long
shot- body language is more
visible- lighting in the
background for a more
dramatic effect- highlights on
the faces show importance
Other magazines which use
this:
23. Layout
I have challenged the regular common
conventions as the images are normally
positioned on the left hand side of the page.
I Placed mine at the top and central because
I feel the image is very dramatic and should
be the main focus on the page. I feel it has
made the page very eye catching to the
audience. The text has been carefully placed
into 6 neat columns, other text less
important text has been placed in a smaller
font because it has no real importance to
the article.
Here are some magazines with the common
conventions and how my magazine isn’t a
regular conventions:
24. Columns
Articles neatly placed- 6 columns- smaller than entering titles-
informing of artists (Uses and Grat).
Other magazines use it :
Page numbering
Conventions developed to be positioned at the bottom because its easier for the audience
to see when flicking through the pages.
Here are magazines who do this:
25. Website
This is a convention that can be found on occasion, but not commonly
used. Its placed under the article in a bolder font for visibility because
its for people to continue reading the article online. This reaches the
younger audience of the magazine as they will be using the internet a
lot.
Bellow is magazine who use a website:
