2. INTRODUCTION
➢ A group discussion is a group of individuals
with similar interest who gather either
formally or informally to bring up ideas,
solve problems or give comments.
3. DEFINITION
❖ The term group discussion suggests a
discussion among a group of members, in
which there will have 8 & 12 members who
will express their views freely, frankly in a
friendly manner a current issue within a time
limit of 20 to 30minutes.
4. PURPOSES
➢ It provides an opportunity for sharing information
among the members of a group
➢ Members get an opportunity to attend group
discussion to gain and share knowledge necessary
to achieve specific educational objectives
➢ It develops the skill of group development & group
socialization under the leadership of teacher
➢ A variety of information may be learned in a short
time, when a number of people share their own
experience with others
5. GUIDELINES TO CONDUCT A GROUP
DISCUSSION
There must be adequate and effective planning of
the topic of discussion, educational objectives to be
achieved and environment for group discussion
Plenty of time and motivation must be provided to
students for preparation on the topic of discussion
Group leader and each member should be well
aware of their moral and professional responsibility
during group discussion

During discussion, the teacher assumes the role of
the mentor and the leader, and the students are
facilitated to share their viewpoint.
One students from the group is asked to records
the proceeding of the discussion
During the discussion, the teacher clarifies doubt
when required
At the end of the discussion, the teacher summarize
the discussion and concludes with a comprehensive
note of carry home messages
7. ADVANTAGES
Each group member actively participate in achieving the
educational objectives
It boosts the self-esteem and morale of students when their
viewpoint are accepted
It helps the students develop a problem solving approach
while working in a group
It also offers group member an opportunity to express in full
freedom
Individual in a group develop social skill and feeling of team
activity
8. DISADVANTAGES
Group discussion are generally time consuming and are
usually not completed in the scheduled time
Some members in a group may dominate and some may only
be passive listener
Group discussion may not be a very effective method for large
group
Adequate preparation is required by each member to have a
fruitful discussion
Equal participation of group members may not be possible in a
group discussion.
