2. INTRODUCTION
In this presentation I will be talking about how audiences are constructed for a
magazine, I will show how the following apply to a magazine and how they are
considered while making a magazine:
• Age
• Gender
• Sexuality
• Social class
• Income
• Ethnicity
• Education background
• Rural/Urban
• Cultural/Religious background
3. When constructing an audience, the age of the audience that
you’re aiming at is very important, for these reasons:
Age matters because there are so many different age groups
which like different things, so when making a magazine, age
is one of the biggest factors.
Another reason why age is so important is because there will
be certain types of ages that buy magazines more than other
ages. i.e. teens will buy magazines more than adults.
Another reason why age is so important is because in order to
able to sell a magazine, age needs to be taken into account to
be able advertise it as well as what goes into it, the way you
advertise a magazine matters greatly as different things
attract different ages of audiences.
AGE
4. Gender is also another very important factor to take in when
constructing and audience for a magazine, here’s why:
When thinking about gender, its easy to begin to stereotype
things, i.e. pink for women and blue for men. And this is most
true, so when taking gender into consideration, things like
colour balance will needed to be taken into account.
Also the content of the magazine is very different in a
woman's magazine than a mans magazine, women focus more
around health and beauty, but men mostly on entertainment.
Also gender is important in the way magazines are advertised
because women like to see things in a different way compared
to men.
GENDER
5. The sexuality of the audience does matter, but instead of
appealing to certain types of sexualities, its best to appeal to
all or the conventions. i.e. in a drama its normal to see a man
and woman fall in love, and in general the audience
understands this and takes a liking to the characters.
However sexuality in a TV drama or any type of media is a very
delicate subject, as gays or lesbians are seen as different
people so when dealing with this subject in terms of creating
an audience, this subject has to be handled in a way in which
people of all sexualities will not e offended, but instead
understand.
SEXUALITY
6. Social class is something that has always mattered in more
older times, but still matters in terms of constructing an
audience. Working class people would most likely be seen to
people as less cleaver whereas middle class people would be
seen as more sophisticated, but soon becomes a difficult
subject when constructing a type of media such as a TV
drama, magazine or any type of media.
SOCIAL CLASS
7. The amount a family earns does play a big part in
constructing a magazine.
Families no matter which job like to read magazines as a form
of entertainment, but what type they read and how often,
does often reflect their income and class.
People who don’t earn much would see magazines as a waste
of money which is totally understandable, so when
constructing an audience, lower class issues are not usually
included in magazines and other types of medias.
INCOME
8. The ethnicities of people is very important as different
ethnicities do have different cultural interests.
Someone from and Asian background like myself as an
example would like magazines like an Asian beats magazine,
but also the fact that I am born in Britain, I like magazines
and medias form this culture too, if not more as I born here.
This al shows that when constructing an audience the
ethnicity of the audience you're aiming at needs to be taken
into account for the reasons I have stated above, also because
ethnicities are so broad and span across al over the world, so
when making a piece of media, the ethnicity of people you're
aiming at needs to be taken into account.
ETHNICITY
9. In terms of an audiences, the educational background is very
important as the schools and the type of educations children
have gone through does effect the types of media they like,
the types of magazines they read and the things they watch
on TV.
It becomes social thing at schools which may change interests
of people, in what they like in particular media products.
EDUCATION BACKGROUND
10. The background that a person comes from can in fact
massively effect their interests in certain types of medias.
Someone from a rural background would
normally/stereotypically have lived a much rougher life than
someone who like high and mighty in the richest parts of
London.
so when constructing an audience, this needs to be taken into
account.
