FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND HOW
DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR
AUDIENCE?

2. SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPING
A
Top management, bankers, lawyers,
doctors and other highly salaried
professionals
B
Middle management, teachers, many
'creatives' e.g graphic designers etc
C1
Office supervisors, junior managers,
nurses, specialist clerical staff etc
C2
Skilled workers, tradespersons (white
collar)
D
Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
(blue collar)
E
Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual
workers
Advertisers and marketing companies
use a social grade categorising
system to define their target
audiences (based on their
occupation).
My target audience would be of the,
B, C1, C2 and D demographic, as they
will have a medium disposable
income therefore will be able to
afford to buy an higher range indie
magazine.
The audience are likely to enjoy
playing musical instruments and are
also likely to want to go to festivals
during the summer, therefore I'm
aiming to give them plenty of festival
related content as well as interviews
as they will probably be booking their
tickets soon.
3. BURTON: SOCIALLY AND MEDIA
GROUPED AUDIENCES
Socially grouped means grouped by factors such as age and
gender.
My target audience will be for females aged 15 to 20 years
old.
Media grouped means an audience can be identified by their
relationship with the media, or their media tastes, for example,
magazine readers or rap music enthusiasts.
I can imagine by target audience also liking magazines that are
more alternative as none of the bands mentioned are
mainstream therefore they would normally buy magazines that
are different
4. AUDIENCE GRATIFICATIONS
The need to be informed and educated
about the world in which they live in
The need to identify personally with the
characters and situations in order to learn
more about themselves
The need to be entertained
The need to use the media as a talking
point for social interaction
The need to escape from their 'daily grind'
into other worlds and situations
Blumier and Katz said that media audiences make active choices about what to consumer
in order to make certain needs.Their Uses and Gratifications Theory tries to show the
different reasons that audiences have for consuming certain media texts.
I have definitely tried to appeal to as
many audience gratifications’ as
possible. By doing this it will make my
magazine more attractive to my target
audience as I will have met their needs.
By doing primary research, it has
given me the opportunity to meet their
needs to a greater extent as
questionnaires give participants the
opportunity to state their opinions
without holding back. This allowed me
to make sure that I stuck to their needs
to make my magazine as appealing as
possible.
5. MASLOW
Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to
achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a
person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on.
One must satisfy lower level basic needs before
progressing on to meet higher level growth needs.
Once these needs have been reasonably satisfied,
one may be able to reach the highest level called
self-actualisation.
Every person is capable and has the desire to move
up the hierarchy toward a level of self-actualisation.
Unfortunately, progress is often disrupted by failure
to meet lower level needs.
Life experiences including divorce and loss of job
may cause an individual to fluctuate between levels
of the hierarchy.
I have tried to meet the esteem
needs within my magazine audience.
I have tried to do this by making
sure that my magazine is relatable
and appealing in order for my
audience to be satisfied, primary
research has been another factor as
I wanted my audience’s needs to be
as fulfilled as possible.
For example I have made sure that
the star persona ‘Eloise Kemp’, has a
very relatable back story therefore
she would likely to be seen as
someone that the audience can
relate to on a personal level.
I have also tried to make sure that
my magazine also fulfil the sense of
belonging and esteem needs by
making sure that my magazine is a
part of a community based idea.
6. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I believe that this would appeal to my audience as it is a
relatable title for the audience as it is likely that they have been
through similar as musicians themselves. I included this to meet
the audience gratification of being able to relate to the artist,
therefore making them look more appealing.
I believe that this would appeal to my audience as it is
something that isn’t usually mentioned in most magazines,
therefore it is a cover line that is likely to attract an audience. I
included this to meet audience gratifications as they would
probably want to improve their air guitar skills to impress their
peer groups.
7. AUDIENCE APPEAL
With this image on my double page spread, I have tried to make it seem
that Eloise is down to earth, confident and is portraying her real
identity.
It is clear with other star personas that they tend to put on a
personality or try to imitate each other, however Eloise doesn’t seem to
be doing this therefore she is likely to attract more of a niche audience
that are not into mainstream music or are looking for an artist that is
more like them. Which would be in order to fulfil the gratification of
them being able to relate to a star persona, rather than feeling
disconnected.
I also repeated photos of Eloise throughout the magazine in order for a
fake relationship to be made with the audience, which will attract the
target audience.
