1. MAGAZINE RESEARCH

2. INTRODUCTION
This slide show is part of my research of magazines. The third slide is a deconstruction of a
school based magazine, this will help me with my preliminary work. The fourth slide is a
deconstruction of a music magazine, this will help me with my main work.

3. Key words are enlarged i.e.
where it says “Salt.” This is the
name of the school and is
enlarged to show and emphasise
the schools name, also this is not
the name of the school, it’s a kind
of nick name that helps people
remember the schools name as
the actual name, Titus Salt
School, is quite long, shortening it
up makes it easier to remember,
The tagline at the bottom
shows the school motto and
shows you the connection
between school and the
slogan. Its catchy so is good
to have on the magazine
because its something for the
viewers to remember the
magazine and the school by.
The Masthead stands out from
the rest of the text on the page.
Biggest reason for this is that
its in the first third of the page
so it is in the direct eyeliner of
the reader.
The picture takes up the whole of the
page making it the main focus of the
magazine. Since the magazine is aimed
at parents, the kids on the front cover are
smiling and look friendly which gives a
good impression to parents about the
kids at the school.
The main headline gives us a
glimpse of what is going to be on
the inside of the magazine, it has
a border around it to intensify the
boldness of the text, thus making
it stand out more
As you can see, the layout is very simple, this
makes it easier for the parents to read it, and it
also helps the readers see the large text that is
the heading.

4. The headline on the cover of the
magazine is big and bold; this
helps to catch the eye of the
reader since its so much more
bigger than the res t of the text
that surrounds it. Also the name
matches the main story, in this
case “Katy Perry,” who is the main
story of that particular magazine
on that week/month that magazine
had been published.
Small snippets of information on
the outside of the magazine
about what is going to be on the
inside of the magazine, this
gives the reader slight but not
too much information about what
will be on the inside of the
magazine, this therefore makes
them want to know the rest of
the story and buy the magazine
to be able to read what is on the
inside.
The main title of the magazine is
big and bold, this makes it obvious
to the readers that this is the name
of the magazine that they are going
to buy and read, the size also help
them to remember the title of the
magazine. SIZE MATTERS!
The way she is stood would come
across as quite feminine and flirty,
this immediately catches the
attention of viewers.
Also underneath the main headline of the magazine,
there is a slight comment on what the headline is
talking about, making it clear what the headline is
saying.
The main image takes up most of the
cover, this helps to emphasize what
the magazine is about, and also
because the image is so big, it
catches the eye of the audience;
that’s not the only thing that catches
the audiences eye, the other thing
that catches the audiences eye is the
eye contact being made by the model,
this is key because it helps to gage
the audiences attention straight to the
main image.

5. Large title so its easy for the
viewers to see; also the bright red
colour represents fierceness and
also gives the vibe of blood, this
highlights the genre of the
magazine and what it is about.
Also the colour red helps catch
the eyes of the viewers.
The large headline clearly indicates
what the music magazine is
featuring on release. The headline
is also big and bright which helps
the viewers see it easily.
The short snippet of information
underneath the headline gives
the readers a short into of what
the article will be about inside of
the magazine, this almost forces
them to want to buy the
magazine because they want to
see what's on the inside.
The mast head of the magazine usually
contains a sort of motto, this one does, and it
kind of persuasive, this is good way to attract
the readers a little more and make them
want to but the magazine more.
The image of the magazine
takes up all of the page, this
is a key point because the
fact it covers the whole page
means it catches the eyes of
the readers, making it the
main focus point of the cover.
The models of the cover make
eye contact with the reader,
this is very important because
it’s an effective and easy way
to catch the eyes of the reader.
The body positioning of the
models is important because
the way they are stood comes
across as quite aggressive,
also the point of the finger
makes the magazine personal
to the reader, because it
makes the reader feel like its
them their pointing too.
The bar code of the magazine just indicates what product this
is and the price, placed out of the way as its considered a
little irrelevant and its not something that magazines really
want to commercialise.
