2. What is a Self-narrative ?
• Self-narrative can be defined as the individual’s
account of the relationship among self-relevant
events across time.
• It is considered helpful in the process of narrative
therapy as it highlights the individual, one of the
important factors of psychotherapy.
• Self-therapy takes place through self-narratives.
3. What is a Self-narrative ?
• Self-narratives are centered on the individual and relate
everything occurring to the self.
• They are in the first person narrative and are
characterized by an auto-diegetic narrator.
• It helps one create own identity through their narration
and ultimately end up with a better understanding of
themselves.
4. What is Psychotherapy ?
• It is a dialectic process wherein there is a discussion between
two people, that is, between the narrator and the narratee.
• The narratee, however, plays a passive role but its presence
as an entity is acknowledged by the narrator.
• In ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’, Anne also addresses a person
referred to as ‘Kitty’ with whom she corresponds because she
says that she needed to correspond to someone while being
in the secret annex.
5. Four Stages of Psychotherapy
• Confession, elucidation, education and transformation are the
four stages of Psychotherapy, according to Carl Jung.
• In the first stage, the secrets or inhibited emotions, similar to
repressed sins must be confessed to enable the patient to
regain his wholeness.
• In the second stage, elucidation or explanation goes deeper and
analyses whatever has been confessed by the patient.Basically,
it implies exploring the consequences of these revelations.
6. Four Stages of Psychotherapy (contd.)
• In the third stage, that is education, the focus is mainly on
the mechanisms and strategies that are used to let the
patient come out of himself in order to attain normal
adaptation.
• The final stage of transformation marks the change of the
patient in which the cure of the patient is dependent on
him/her and the therapist. In case of the absence of a
therapist, one undergoes self-therapy in their narrative.
