Hiskashrus today - only 
through Moshiach 
It is with great pleasure that we present our readership 
with this Expanded Edition of Moshiach Weekly, which 
is being released in time for the Kinus HaShluchim 
Haolomi. 
For a Chossid living with Moshiach, the sole mention 
of the Kinus HaShluchim evokes memories of the Kinus 
HaShluchim that took place in 5752, during which the 
Rebbe revolutionized the idea of Shlichus in our time. 
At the Pesichas HaKinus which traditionally took 
place at the Rebbe’s Farebrengen on Shabbos afternoon, 
the Rebbe’s message to the Shluchim was clear: Your 
Avodah to spread Chassiddus and Yiddishekeit to all 
corners of the globe has been completed! The only thing 
remaining in Shlichus is to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach 
Tzidkeinu. The Rebbe clarified that obviously all of the 
previous Avodah’s (Mivtza Tefillin, Hafotzas Hamayo-nos 
Chutzah etc) must still be carried out, however, 
now, the main aspect of Shlichus which must permeate 
all other aspects is the Inyan of Moshiach. 
Of course, this Sicha didn’t come as a surprise. It came 
as a direct continuation to the Sichos of the summer 
of 5751 and the beginning of 5752 in which the Rebbe 
emphasized over and over again that the concept of 
Moshiach has to be the main focus of our Avodah in 
our historic time.

As is well known, the main efforts of the Friedik-er 
Rebbe in Soviet Russia were focused on bulding 
Chadorim and ensuring that Jewish children receive 
a proper Chinuch. This was an enormous Chiddush at 
the time, since it was the initial breakthrough for what 
we would call Mivtzoim. Until then, Chassidim were ac-customed 
to Avoda Penimis, in which each one worked 
on himself and removed himself from matters of this 
world. A genuine Chassid was certainly not someone 
who walked about among others. 
The Friediker Rebbe came along and turned things 
upside down. He demanded of the great Chassidim, 
tremendous Baalei Avoda who devoted all their time to 
Avodas Hashem, to go “out there” and gather unedu-cated 
Jewish children and learn Alef Beis with them. 
During this time the Frierdiker Rebbe once farbrenged 
with a Koch about the Mesirus Nefesh demanded of ev-ery 
Chossid to ensure the proper Chinuch for Tashbar 
(Tinokos Shel Beis Rabon – Jewish children). Among 
those present was the famous Chassid Reb Itche der 
Masmid who was known for his outstanding piety and 
asceticism. In the middle of the Farbrengen, the Rebbe 
turned to R’ Itche and said, “If you are involved in Tash-bar 
then you are mine. But if not, then you may still be 
Itche [i.e., a Maskil and an Oved, etc.], but you have no 
connection with me.” 
In other words, although Reb Itche was an outstand-ing 
Chassid, nevertheless when the call of the hour was 
teaching children, the Friediker Rebbe demanded of 
him to leave the Tziyur he had been raised to be and 
which he was used to, and get used to a new Avoda. So 
too with us and the question about Hiskashrus without 
Inyonei Moshiach. It’s hard to relate to the new Mivtza 
the Rebbe told us to do, and many of us try our best to 
stick with our previous Tziyur. 
In the later years, the Rebbe referred often to “Tekufa 
Hoacharona” (this most recent period). The Rebbe re-fers 
to it as a different era and not just as specific change 
in behavior. 
Obviously, the change from one era to another is 
much more radical than a specific change, which is 
why effort is required to adjust. And just as they had to 
adjust in previous generations, we too must make the 
requisite changes. 
Once the Rebbe announced Mivtza Tefillin, there just 
can’t be a Chabad House that does not do this Mivtza 
and which champions Hiskashrus without Mivtza Tefil-lin! 
Once the Rebbe founded Tzivos Hashem, there can-not 
be a Chassid who raises his Children to be “a Chas-sid 
of the Rebbe” without being a soldier in Tzivos 
Hashem, and without the slogan of Moshiach Now. 
Likewise, when the Rebbe made it clear that the focus 
now is on Kabbalas Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu, and he 
emphasized that this is the gateway for everything else 
and this is the only Shlichus, it is clear that if we want to 
be “the Rebbe’s Chassidim”, we must put all of our en-ergy 
into this Mivtza, and if not, there is a big question 
mark on our Hiskashrus to the Rebbe R”L. 
It is to this end that we are printing this Expanded edi-tion, 
in which we present an array of artices, designed 
to give the reader a taste of the Rebbe’s Shturem about 
Moshiach, and the Chassidim’s activities which were 
done it its wake. 
It is our fervent hope that this publication will inspire 
its readers to do more in all Inyonim connecyed with 
'the only Shlichus', being Mekabel Pnei Moshiach, and 
may this be the מכה בפטיש in bringing the Geula, and 
may we be zoche to celebrate this Kinus together with 
The Rebbe in the Beis HaMikdosh HaShlishi.

When speaking in connection with the Kinus 
Hashluchim, it is of utmost importance to look at the last 
Sicha which the Rebbe has spoken to us, Shluchim. In 
5752 – the last time the Rebbe addressed the Shluchim, 
the Rebbe told us, that we now have only one Shlichus 
to accomplish: To be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu! 
The Rebbe is telling us that everything in our Avo-das 
Hashluchus must be permeated with one thing: 
Moshiach! 
Everyone is busy contemplating what exactly needs to 
be done, and how to prepare themselves and the entire 
world to greet Moshiach. One says like this and the other 
says like that, and everyone is thinking how to do it best. 
Everyone is so involved in the debates to the extent 
that they forget about the point! They forget who we are 
and with what we are supposed to be living. This one is 
involved in this and the other is involved in that, and 
they are all doing good things. Some are Shtureming in 
Mitzvas Tefillin – What is greater than Tefillin? Others 
are involved in Mitzvas Ahavas Yisroel – What is greater 
than Ahavas Yisroel? They're all good things, but they 
forget about the main thing! The main thing is Moshiach! 
Moshiach! Moshiach! 
We must therefore remember, that even if we are doing 
all good things but the spirit of Moshiach is not felt in 
them – this means that we are sleeping! And we must be 
aware that if we are sleeping and not fulfilling the main 
task that we have, even the good things that we are doing 
are not being done the way they should be. 
No matter what we believe about the Rebbe, no matter 
our affiliations, our Shlichus must be dedicated to bring-ing 
Moshiach! 
How can it be, that notwithstanding the fact that it's 
been so long since we last heard Sichos from the Rebbe, 
we still haven’t brought about the Hisgalus. We must do 
all we can to bring Moshiach now! 
Everyone remembers how a journalist came to the 
Rebbe a day before 27 Adar asking for a message to print 
in in the newspapers. The Rebbe answered that it is al-ready 
been publicized that Moshiach is not only coming 
but he is already on his way! 
Everyone remembers how strong the Rebbe spoke 
about the need for Moshiach. 
This must not remain a memory from the past, we 
must take action and bring Moshiach now!

A sicha of the Rebbe 
Kislev: A Month 
of Geulah 
In the month of Kislev in which we find 
ourselves, we find a few special days which 
have a connection with the Geulah. The 9th 
of Kislev is the birthday and yartzeit of the 
Mitteler Rebbe. The Mitteler Rebbe started 
to disseminate chassidus in a broad way, to 
the extent that he was informed on to the 
government, which in essence was a Kitrug 
above trying to put a stop to this new level of 
Hafotzas Hachassidus. 
On Yud Kislev the charges and accusations 
were dropped without major conflict, which 
led to the spreading of chassidus in an even 
broader manner. 
The next special day we find in this month 
which has to do with the Geulah, is the 
Chag Hageulah of the Alter Rebbe – the 
founder of chassidus Chabad, on the 19th 
day of the month. By contrast to the short, 
fiery ma’amorim which were said before the 
arrest, the ma’amorim delivered after the 
liberation were very much more embodied in 
intellectual explanations. 
After the Alter Rebbe’s histalkus in 5573 his 
son the Mitteler Rebbe accepted the mantle 
of leadership, he started to say chassidus in 
a broader more explanatory fashion than his 
father. 
This all serves as a preparation for the 
redemption which comes through יפוצו מעינותיך 
חוצה beginning with Yud Tes Kislev – the 
redemption of the Alter Rebbe and further 
developed on Yud Kislev – the redemption of 
the Mitteler Rebbe. 
Since we have seen the success of hafotzas 
hamayonos throughout the years despite the 
obstacles they faced, and the redemptions 
which they experienced during this month: 
Yud Kislev, Yud Tes Kislev and Chanukah, 
this gives us extra encouragement in our 
belief that now is the time, and that this is the 
month for Moshiach to come NOW!

KISLEV AND THE GEULAH
IF YOU KNEW, 
WHY DID YOU SEND US?! 
On the night of Tisha B’Av, R’ Chanoch of Li-timorsk 
(later the Alexander Rebbe) sat on the 
threshold of the shul in Peshischa. He said: 
“There was a simple villager who did not know 
the Alef-Beis or any Jewish customs. All his life he 
yearned to live with his fellow Jews but was unable 
to do so until he reached old age. It was only then 
that he liquidated his farm and moved to town. 
“Erev Pesach, he wanted to have a proper seder, 
but he had never seen one. He was too embarrassed 
to ask anyone and so he sent his wife to the neigh-bor, 
ostensibly to borrow something but in the 
meantime, to see how the table was set. 
“Just at the time that she visited, the neighboring 
husband and wife quarreled and the husband took 
a thick stick and hit his wife. The former villager’s 
wife returned home downcast upon seeing what a 
proper seder looked like. 
“Her husband asked her what she had seen, but 
she remained silent. He asked her again but she re-fused 
to talk. He became very angry and grabbed a 
stick and hit her. 
“She sighed and said, ‘If you knew, why did you 
send me there to look?’” 
R’ Chanoch finished his story and was silent, but 
his audience burst into laughter. 
R’ Yechiel Meir of Gustinin said: “Why are you 
laughing? Isn’t this the complaint of your souls to 
Hashem – You knew we would sin, so why did you 
send us to Golus?” 
A STORY 
A Chassidishe Ma'aseh

The Rebbe explained, that from time to time, a new Inyan 
is introduced into Avodas HaShlichus which permeates and 
becomes the gateway for all other parts of Shlichus. In the 
recent past, the Rebbe continued, a new Inyan has been 
added and become the one Shlichus which must permeate 
and elevate all other facets of Shlichus: “To be Mekabel Pnei 
Moshiach Tzidkeinu BiGeulah Hoamitis VeHashleimah”.

The time is shortly after the Histalkus of the Fri-erdiker 
Rebbe. Lubavitch is deep in mourning over 
the sudden passing of the Rebbe. It has been only 10 
years since Lubavitch relocated to the western hemi-sphere, 
which, in the words of the Alter Rebbe, did 
not experience Matan Torah. Under the direction of 
the Frierdiker Rebbe and his son-in-law, then known 
as the Ramash, the Chassidim rebuilt the Chabad 
community and its Mosdos with sweat and blood. 
At that time, only one thing was of concern to the 
Askanim and Chassidim: ensuring Lubavitch conti-nuity. 
They hoped that a new Rebbe would slowly 
continue developing the Lubavitch community, both 
in America and abroad. 
The Rebbe, however, had different plans. Plans 
extending far beyond the horizons of the Lubavitch 
community. Plans of influencing every single Yid, re-gardless 
of background or affiliation, to follow in the 
ways of the Torah, and of our Rabbei’im. In no time, 
Chassidm began hearing new concepts, "going out 
on Shlichus," “lighting up the world" and so forth. 
Many energetic Chassidishe Yungeleit, who could 
have contributed plenty to the development and ex-

pansion of the Chabad community at 
home, were sent as Shluchim to dis-tant 
and foreign cities and countries: 
Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, Argentina, 
Australia, and many more. Gradually 
the Chassidim began to realize that in 
front of their very eyes they were wit-nessing 
the formation of a new era, 
"Dor Hashvi’i', a direct continuation of 
the previous generation’s Avodah: Shli-chus! 
What is Shlichus? The definition was 
given by the Rebbe himself: Hafotzas 
HaTorah, Yiddishkeit and Chassidus 
to every possible location, thereby re-turning 
Yiddishe Neshamas to their 
roots. 
What is the purpose of Shlichus? 
The answer to this is found in the re-ply 
of Moshiach to the Baal Shem Tov’s 
question “Eimosai Kaosi Mar”, “When 
will the master (Moshiach) come”? To 
which Moshiach responded “Lichshey-afutzu 
Maayonosecha Chutza,” “When 
your wellsprings will spread outward.” 
Meaning, the spreading of the well-springs 
of Chassidus across the globe 
will bring about the Geulah and the 
coming of Moshiach. 
Despite this being the purpose of 
Shlichus throughout all the years, 
this goal wasn't felt so much in the 
Shluchim's activities. Naturally a 
lot of Mekuravim in the early years 
were not fully aware of the objec-tive 
of Shlichus. Their knowledge of 
Yiddishkeit did not contain a particu-lar 
emphasis on the upcoming Geulah. 
The fact that it was the final goal did 
not cause it to become part of the Shli-chus 
itself. And most important of all, 
the Shluchim did not feel that every ac-tivity 
on their part was part of a global 
campaign to bring Moshiach. 
With time, the Rebbe changed the 
style, and started saying more and more 
expressions about the Geulah and our 
obligation to bring it. After these Si-chos, 
the Shluchim were required to 
feel and have in mind that every one of 
their activities, is part of a long process 
which will eventually bring to the final 
goal, the Geulah. 
But even this did not bring about dra-matic 
changes in the Shlichus, rather 
the Shlichus and its manner remained 
the same, just like in 5710 (besides the 
many details which were added, the ten 
Mivtzoyim etc.) with a small addition 
of Kavana to bring the Geulah. That’s 
how things ran until the beginning of 
the 5750’s.

Once a year, a Kinus for all the 
Shluchim would take place. The official 
opening of the Kinus would be at the 
Rebbe’s Farbrengen on Shabbos. The 
Rebbe would elaborate about Shlichus 
and the different ways to go about it. 
These Sichos were so to say the “yearly 
mission” that the Rebbe gave to his 
Shluchim. Following the Kinus, the 
Shluchim would go back to their Shli-chus, 
faithfully carrying out the Reb-be’s 
latest instructions. 
The Kinus of 5752 began on 25 
Cheshvan – Shabbos Mevarchim 
Kislev. Excitement filled the air in an-ticipation 
of the Sicha. Ever since the 
Sicha of 28 Nissan 5751, in which the 
Rebbe implored the Chasssidm to do 
whatever they can to bring Moshiach 
Bepoel, Chassidim were caught up in 
a storm of Geulah. Nevertheless, in re-gards 
to the Shluchim’s work, there was 
no real innovation even during this pe-riod. 
The Rebbe did instruct to take on 
new activities (such as learning Inyonei 
Moshiach U’Geula) however the gen-eral 
Shlichus remained the same. 
Half a year later, towards the end of 
Cheshvan 5752, Crown Heights filled 
with Shluchim. For many, it was their 
first visit since 28 Nissan, and they all 
wanted to get a clear picture of their 
mission at the current stage. 
They were not left disappointed. The 
Rebbe explained, that from time to 
time, a new Inyan is introduced into 
Avodas HaShlichus which permeates

and becomes the gateway for all other 
parts of Shlichus. In the recent past, 
the Rebbe continued, a new Inyan has 
been added and become the one Shli-chus 
which must permeate and elevate 
all other facets of Shlichus: “To be Me-kabel 
Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu BiG-eulah 
Hoamitis VeHashleimah”. 
The Rebbe went on to explain the 
reason for the recent Chiddush in 
Shlichus: “Being that the Friediker 
Rebbe, the only Shliach in our genera-tion, 
the only Moshiach in our genera-tion 
proclaimed that we have already 
completed all Avodah needed to bring 
Moshiach, it’s understood that the Shli-chus 
of the Friediker Rebbe has begun 
and therefore the only thing left in our 
Avodas HaShlichus is to be Mekabel 
Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu, so that he 
will be able to carry out his Shlichus 
and take all Yidden out of Golus.” 
At the end of the Sicha, the Rebbe 
outlined in very clear terms the prac-tical 
Hachalotos which must be taken 
at this year’s Kinus: First of all – all 
Shluchim must be notified that the 
Avodas HaShlichus of our times is to 
be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu. 
In practical terms this means that all 
details of Hafotzas HaTorah, Yiddish-keit 
and Hafotzas HaMaayonos Chutza 
must be permeated with this Nekuda: 
How this action leads to the Inyan of 
Kabolas Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu. 
This Kinus must bring every Shliach to

prepare himself and all the Yidden is 
his area to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach. 
This is accomplished through explain-ing 
the idea of Moshiach – as it is ex-plained 
in Torah SheBiksav and Torah 
אין דעם גופא – וואס איז שייך צו דעם כינוס 
השלוחים בכל שנה ושנה – קומט צו דער חידוש בשנה 
זו במיוחד אין דעם קשר פון דער עבודת השליחות 
מיט"שלח נא ביד תשלח״, די שליחות פון משיח צדקנו: 
מ׳האט גערעדט פריער אז כ״ק מו״ח אדמו״ר נשיא 
דורנו האט מודיע געווען, אז מ׳האט שוין פארענדיקט 
אלע עניני העבודה, און מ'שטייט שוין גרייט "עמדו הכן 
כולכם״, צו מקבל זיין משיח צדקנו. 
און עס איז שוין מקוים געווארן דעם סימן פון שנה 
שעברה – ה׳תשנ״א ר״ת הי׳ תהא שנת נפלאות אראנו, 
און בהוספה בשנה זו – והולך ונמשך – הי׳ תהא שנת 
נפלאות בה, (און) בתוכה – אז דאס (נפלאות) ווערט דער 
מהות ותוכן ונשמה פון דעם יאר. 
און מ׳זעט בפועל ווי עס איז געווארן און עס ווערט 
דער ״ילחום מלחמת ה׳״ ומנצח בכמה וכמה ענינים – 
ודוקא מתוך מלחמה של שלום. און נצחון איז אויך מלשון 
נצחיות, פארבונדן מיט דעם גילוי פון ״נצח״: נ׳ – גילוי 
שער הנו״ן, צ׳ – שנת הצדי״ק (ווי אידן האבן אנגערופן 
דעם יאר) און ח׳ – דער גילוי פון משיח צדקנו, וואס איז 
פארבונדן מיט מספר שמונה (שמונה נסיכי אדם). 
דערפון איז פארשטאנדיק, אז וויבאלד די 
שלוחים האלטן שוין פון לאנג נאך מילוי התחלת עבודת 
השליחות בהפצת התורה והיהדות והפצת המעינות 
חוצה, און פון לאנג נאך אמצע עבודת השליחות, ביז אז 
מ׳האט שוין מסיים געווען די שליחות (כהודעת נשיא 
דורנו הנ"ל ואעפ״כ איז די גאולה האמיתית והשלימה 
נאך ניט געקומען בפועל ממש – דארף מען זאגן אז מ׳איז 
נאך געבליבן עפעס צו טאן וואט וועט ברענגען די גאולה 
בפועל. 
און דאס איז: ע״פ הידוע אז ״בכל דור ודור נולד 
א׳ מזרע יהודה שהוא ראוי להיות משיח לישראל״, 
א׳ הראוי מצדקתו להיות גואל ולכשיגיע הזמן יגלה 
אליו השי״ת וישלחו כו׳", וע״פ הודעת כ״ק מו״ח 
אדמו״ר נשיא דורנו, דער איינציגער שליח שבדורנו, דער 
איינציגער משיח שבדורנו, אז מ׳האט שוין אלץ 
SheBaal Peh – in a manner in which 
every person will be able to understand 
according to his level and capabilities. 
The Rebbeim have told us: “Chas-sidim 
zeinen klug” – “Chassidim are 
פארענדיקט – איז פארשטאנדיק אז ס׳הויבט זיך אן 
מקויים ווערן דער "שלח נא ביד תשלח״, די שליחות 
פון כ״ק מו״ח אדמו״ר. און דערפון איז מובן, אז די 
איינציקע זאך וואט איז איצטער געבליבן אין דער עבודת 
השליחות, איז: צו מקבל זיין פני משיח צדקנו בפועל 
ממש, בכדי ער זאל קענען מקיים זיין שליחותו בפועל 
און ארויסנעמען אלע אידן פון גלות! 
דערפון האט מען די הוראה בפועל וואס מ׳דארף 
ארויסנעמען שטייענדיק איצטער בא דער התחלה 
ופתיחה פון דעם "כינוס השלוחים העולמי״: 
לכל לראש – דארף מען ארויסקומען מיט א הכרזה 
והודעה צו אלע שלוחים, אז די עבודת השליחות איצטער 
און פון יעדער אידן באשטייט אין דעם – אז מ׳זאל מקבל 
זיין פני משיח צדקנו. 
דאט הייסט: אלע פרטים אין דער עבודת השליחות פון 
הפצת התורה והיהדות והפצת המעינות חוצה, דארפ'ן 
זיין דורכגענומען מיט דער נקודה – ווי דאס פירט צו 
קבלת משיח צדקנו. 
ובפשטות מיינט דאס – אז פון דעם כינוס השלוחים 
דארף מען קומען און להביא החלטות טובות ווי יעדער 
שליח דארף זיך אליין צוגרייטן און צוגרייטן אלע אידן 
במקומו ובעירו וכו׳ צו מקבל זיין פני משיח צדקנו, דורך 
דעם וואס ער איז מסביר דעם ענין פון משיח כמבואר 
בתושב״כ ובתושבע״פ באופן המתקבל צו יעדערן לפי

smart.” The Chassidim realized what 
they have to do. Slowly but surely the 
Chassidim realized that the Sicha of 
Shabbos Chaye Soroh 5752 changed, 
or more accurately put, innovated, 
Avodas Hashlichus. From now on 
Moshiach is the topic of discussion. 
Geulah and Moshiach are what must 
be explained to every Yid in his area 
and city, and Moshiach must permeate 
every single detail of the Shlichus. 
Word of the special Sicha spread 
like wildfire amongst the Chassidim. 
The “Reishis Devorim” (short summa-ry) 
of the sicha was sent out to every 
Chabad community, and by the end of 
the week, the Sicha was checked over 
and edited by the Rebbe and printed in 
the Kfar Chabad Magazine and in the 
Algemeiner Journal. 
At once began an unprecedented im-petus 
to the activities of the Shluchim 
in Inyonei Moshiach U’Geulah. The 
fervor of the Chassidim which had 
been building up ever since the Sicha 
of 28 Nissan now found expression in 
organized activities. The focus of the 
Shluchim was now on one thing: “Di 
Eintzike Zach: Geulah.” 
In addition to the activities of the 
Shluchim, Anash too didn’t just sit idly 
by with their hands folded. Under-standably, 
“The International Cam-paign 
to bring Moshiach” which was 
established immediately following 
the Sicha of 28 Nissan, received a 
major impetus: No longer was their 
work another important thing. It was 
now the only thing which is left to do! 
Amongst many other activities, 
Reb Shmuel Butman initiated a spe-cial 
advertisement campaign under 
the title: “Hinei Zeh Moshiach Boh” 
– “Moshiach is on his way”. When 
he passed by the Rebbe at dollars, he 
showed the advertisement sign to the 
Rebbe, and explained that it would 
be publicized to the entire world. The 
Rebbe answered: Yashar Koach Godol! 
The Shluchim Office (under Merkos 
L’Inyonei Chinuch) lent a helping 
hand as well to the efforts to bring 
Moshiach. A special document with 
information about Moshiach was sent 
to every Shliach. A phone conference 
was organized with the best speakers 
from amongst the Shluchim. Under-standably, 
the topic up for discussion 
was: What is the best way to introduce 
the concept of Moshiach to the masses. 
Many Shluchim took the initiative 
and came up with original ideas to 
spread Besurash HaGeulah. In Mol-dova, 
the new Shliach Reb Zalman 
Abelsky arranged for big signs with 
the words “Prepare for the coming of 
Moshiach” in Hebrew and Russian to 
be hung all around the city. The same 
was done by Reb Mendel Pevsner, the 
new Shliach to Peterburg. Even in 
Russia, which had just awoken from 
70 years under communist rule, the 
Yidden were given to understand that 
soon there will be a solution for all 
their problems – Moshiach! Even in 
far-off Bangkok, the Israelis at the new-ly- 
founded Chabad House were given 
a clear message about Moshiach who 
will soon redeem even those lost and 
exiled in far-off lands. 
And understandably the message 
spread farther and farther. The up-coming 
Yom Tov of Chanukah was a 
great opportunity for the Shluchim to 
spread the message of redemption to 
the public. The large public Menorahs, 
which – every year – served as a sym-bol 
of the fact that Yiddishkeit is alive 
and well, were used that year to spread 
the message: ‘Moshiach is on the way – 
let's get ready'. 
In addition to publicizing the mes-sage, 
the Shluchim also placed em-phasis 
on explaining the concept of 
Moshiach and Geulah to the Yidden of 
their cities and beyond. In Geneva, Reb 
Mendel Pevzner arranged a Yom Iyun 
(day of learning) in Inyonei Moshiach 
U’Geulah for the Yidden of the city. In 
Sydney, Reb Pinchas Feldman arranged

a special symposium dealing with is-sues 
of Moshiach and Geulah. 
On a global scale, Reb Yonah Avt-zon 
of Sichos in English produced 
tapes of Shiurim on Inyonei Geulah 
U’Moshiach and later brought a set to 
the Rebbe. Giant ads were placed in 
the newspapers, and the reader was 
told "to reach his own conclusion": The 
world is ready for change, Geulah is at 
our doorstep. Reb Itche Springer add-ed 
a practical side to the ads and called 
on the readers to add in acts of Torah 
and Mitzvos to bring Moshiach closer. 
In addition to all of the above, within 
a few months, many new books were 
released discussing topics of Moshiach 
and Geulah. To name a few: (1) “I await 
his coming every day,” which essential-ly 
is a translation of the Sichos in the 
Dvar Malchus that the Rebbe gave out 
on 15 Iyar 5751. (2) “Mashiach,” a fas-cinating 
essay written by Reb Emman-uel 
Shochet which briefly summarizes 
the personality and work of Melech 
HaMoshiach and the practical implica-tions 
for our times. (3) “Highlights of 
Moshiach”, a Kuntres written by Reb 
Avrohom Stone, discussing basic con-cepts 
in Inyonei Moshiach and Geulah 
such as “The Moshiach in every gener-ation,” 
“The spark of Moshiach in every 
person” in easy language. (4) “Lets Get 
Ready – Moshiach through Children’s 
Eyes,” written by Malka Touger, which 
presents Yemos Hamoshiach as they 
are perceived by children, and makes 
the future world more accessible to the 
child. (5) “Sound the Great Shofar,” an 
English rendering of the Sichos from 
the years 5751-2, presenting the ideas 
contained therein in an intellectual 
form, while adhering to the Chasidic 
sources. The book (which was later 
translated and published in Hebrew) 
was the first attempt of its kind to in-troduce 
the Sichos of the Dvar Mal-chus 
(from the years 5751-2) in a clear 
concise form and as a practical guide 
for our times.

Tzeiri Agudas Chabad (Tzach) is 
the first organization that the Rebbe 
founded in Eretz Yisroel. Throughout 
the years, they were the Rebbe's arm 
and brought the Rebbe’s Inyonim and 
instructions to all the residents of Eretz 
Yisroel. 
As soon as news of the Sicha reached 
Eretz Yisroel, Tzach called a staff meet-ing. 
It was clear to all that after such a 
clear definition of the task at hand, the 
order of the day is bringing the mes-sage 
of Geulah to all. A new campaign 
was launched. 
In essence it came as a continuation 
to two modest signboards that were

hung a few months earlier in Tel Aviv, 
which read “ היכונו לביאת המשיח ” “Prepare 
for the coming of Moshiach". Sign-boards 
of this kind hung in the streets 
of cities, on buses, in newspapers, as 
stickers on cars and street poles, as 
well as on television and radio. "Instead 
of talking about the elections," said 
Reb Menachem Mendel Halevi Brod, 
a member of Tzach and the brains be-hind 
the campaign, "They will discuss 
Moshiach." And so it was. Public con-sciousness 
was focused on one issue, 
which until then seemed outdated, and 
suddenly became the focal point: The 
imminent coming of Moshiach. 
And the method was simple. Chassi-dei 
Chabad were scattered everywhere, 
and have some measure of control on 
the public’s consciousness. And if the 
Rebbe placed on them a special Shli-chus, 
to bring Inyonei Moshiach to the 
public, it was only natural that this be-came 
the hot topic on the agenda. 
All of Anash enlisted in these activi-ties, 
each in accordance with his skills. 
During Bein Hazmanim (vacation) 
Yeshiva Bochrim from Yeshivas Toras 
Emes in Yerusholayim joined the effort 
by attaching stickers and signboards 
about Moshiach to all Egged buses in 
the city. The same took place in 
Be'er Sheva and many other cities. 
Another area in which Moshiach 
was introduced during this time 
was in the Chinuch of children. In 
the Sicha of Simchas Torah 5752 the 
Rebbe said “When one looks at a Jew-ish 
child, one should see Moshiach.” 
In accordance with this directive, 
Reb Naftoli Rot, director of a chil-dren’s 
organization in Yerusholayim, 
arranged a Mivtza (learning cam-paign) 
of learning Inyonei Geulah 
U’Moshiach. The Mivtza, which was 
called ” ילדים בנתיב הגאולה ” “Children on 
the path of redemption,” consisted of 
a structured curriculum on topics of 
the Geulah and its centrality in Yid-dishkeit. 
The course was studied in 
many Lubavitcher schools, as well as 
many non-Lubavitch schools. All in all, 
tens of thousands of children partici-pated 
in the study of Inyonei Geulah 
U’Moshiach. 
The schools in Crown Heights im-mediately 
placed the study of Geulah 
U’Moshiach as a subject in the cur-riculum. 
Reb Moshe Slonim posted a 
sign in the Lubavitch Cheder in Mor-ristown 
clarifying to the children the 
call of the hour: To contemplate seri-ously 
about the imminent coming of 
Moshiach. 
The above mentioned activities are 
just a drop in the bucket of the many 
Peulos that were done by Shluchim, 
Bochurim and Anash as a natural reac-tion 
to the Rebbe’s call to be “Mekabel 
Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu.” They also 
reflect the atmosphere at that time: We 
must do something to fulfill the Shli-chus 
which has been placed upon us. 
Afternote: As of the Kinus 
Hashluchim 5774 we have not yet 
heard from the Rebbe any updates per-taining 
to the shlichus demanded of us. 
Thus, this remains the only Shlichus 
and we must do everything in our pow-er 
to bring it to fruition .במהרה בימינו ממש

THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE 
MOSHIACH IS ON THE WAY 
On Thursday night, Beis Adar 
1 5752, Crown Heights residents 
were shocked by the cruel mur-der 
of Mrs. Pesya Leah Lapine 
who gave up her life Al Kiddush 
Hashem. 
That Erev Shabbos thousands 
gathered outside 770 for the 
Levayah. At around two o’clock 
the Aron arrived. Soon after, the 
Rebbe appeared with a serious 
look on his holy face. Following 
closely behind the Aron, he led 
the procession onto Kingston 
Avenue until reaching the huge 
“Moshiach is on the way” sign 
(corner of Kingston & Union). 
The Rebbe stood there for ten 
minutes, all the while watching 
the people continue down to the 
house of the Nifteress, and dur-ing 
that time looked up at the 
sign which was hanging above.

On Simcha Torah 5754, during the break between Shachris and Hakofos, a group of Anash who donated 
generously to The Building Fund of Beis Rabeinu SheBeBovel” passed by the Rebbe. 
Among them was Reb Meir Schreiber of Crown Heights, he showed the the Rebbe a picture of Kos Shel 
Brocho 5748, in which the Rebbe is seen being me’oided strongly with both of his holy hands and asked “in 
the name of all Chassidim, will we merit to see such Giluyim once more?” The Rebbe nodded his holy head. 
This answer didn’t satisfy him. A a few weeks later he sent in to the Rebbe a detailed letter to affirm that the 
Rebbe meant that the Chassidim would actually see the Rebbe as before. 
Cheshvan 5754. 
Kevod Kedushas Admur Shlita: 
After I passed before the Rebbe on Simchas To-rah, 
I was uncertain what the Rebbe meant. I want 
to clarify the following: Out of their great love to the 
Rebbe, the Chassidim are feeling very down from the 
great suffering that the Rebbe is enduring. If there 
was some light at the end of the tunnel, without any 
doubt it would help us significantly. Will we merit to 
see the Rebbe as in the enclosed picture? With the 
same physical strength and more? We ask for the 
Rebbe’s brocho that this should be very soon! 
When the letter was shown to the Rebbe, the Reb-be 
nodded in affirmation. When the secretary added: 
שיהיה ביתר שאת וביתר עז ובבריאות שלימה וחזקה , the Rebbe 
again answered affirmatively.

brimming with signs that 
Moshiach’s arrival is ever

rom the day I went to Ched-er, 
and even prior to that, I 
began picturing in my mind 
images of the Geulah. The 
Rebbe’s koch in Moshiach 
F "The wave 
started already as a little child, and only 
intensified as time went on. From the 
Rebbe’s first Ma’amer of Bosi Ligani 
in 5711, to the Mivtzoim campaigns 
starting in the late 5720’s, and the com-pletion 
of the ‘Moshiach Sefer Torah’ in 
5730, the Rebbe constantly imbued in 
us Chassidim the belief in, and antici-pation 
for, the complete and final Geu-lah, 
and that it will be occurring in our 
generation. 
In the early 5740’s however, the in-tensity 
was ratcheted up a notch. Be-ginning 
with the establishment of Tzi-vos 
Hashem in 5741, regarding which 
the Rebbe explained that every child is 
a soldier in Hashem’s army working to 
bring Moshiach. The newly-founded 
organization’s slogan was “We Want 
Moshiach Now,” as the Rebbe stressed 
that we must demand Moshiach in 
English so that everyone can under-stand 
and join in the cry. 
These were years brimming with 
signs that Moshiach’s arrival is ever 
imminent. The following article will 
attempt to give a general overview of 
some of the special Sichos, events and 
anecdotes that transpired in the years 
5742-5754. 
תשמ"ב – תהא שנת ביאת משיח 
The wave of Moshiach that hit in the 
year 5741 with the opening of Tzivos 
Hashem, whose slogan is "We want 
Moshiach now," swept into the year 
5742. It was the first time the Rebbe re-vealed 
the roshei teivos of a year. 
The Rebbe spoke of the roshei 
teivos for the first time at the Far-brengen 
of the 2nd day of Shavuos: 
"As it is known, in the letters תשמ"ב 
are hinted the roshei teivos of many 
good things, they even hint at ''tehei 
shnas bias moshiach''!... V’yehi rotzon 
that very soon we'll merit the fulfill-ment 
of the yi'ud ''Tehei Shnas bias 
Moshiach, namely, that we will leave 
this Golus and go greet Moshiach 
Tzidkeinu.'' 
The ''Shalsheles Hayachas” sums up 
the year as follows: 
''Calls for the true and eternal unity 
of all Yidden by them buying letters in 
a general Sefer Torah written in their 
merit, each according to his custom 
(Ashkenaz, Sefard, Teiman, Arizal etc). 
instructs the Hanholos of Tomchei 
Temimim and Beis Rivkah, respec-tively, 
to immediately begin writing a 
Sefer Torah in the merit of their stu-dents, 
benefactors and families. Notes 
that this mitzvah is mentioned at the 
end of the 613 mitzvos and some con-nect 
it with the end of Golus. Calls for 
an extraordinary effort in Hafotzas 
Hama'ayonos Chutzoh and Mivtza 
Chanukah. Notes that in various Se-forim 
5742 is a “keitz.” Look and see 
what people say: it's the roshei teivos of 
'tehei Shnas bias Moshiach.'' 
תשמ"ג – תהא שנת גילוי משיח 
At the beginning of the year the 
Rebbe called for every Yid to spread 
the idea of the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei No-ach 
among all the nations of the world. 
This, in accordance with the P'sak of 
the Rambam that ''Moshe command-ed 
in the name of Hashem to force all 
mankind to accept the mitzvos that 
Bnei Noach were commanded.” The 
Rebbe explained that it doesn't mean 
to force them literally, but rather with 
the proper explanation that these seven 
laws are the basis for the continuity of 
a healthy and just humanity and allow 
for different cultures to coincide to-gether, 
in unity, around the belief in the 
creator of the world. 
As proof of this, the Rebbe referenced 
the announcement of President Ronald 
Reagan calling on all citizens to unite 
behind the Seven Noahide Laws as well 
as the declaration of the US Senate and 
Congress, that they be upheld. The 
Rebbe concluded: “the very fact that 
the president of the United States came 
out with an open declaration to fulfill 
the Sheva Mitzvos, this itself should in-vigorate 
of Moshiach 
that hit in the 
year 5741 with 
the opening 
of Tzivos 
Hashem, 
whose slogan 
is "We want 
Moshiach 
now," swept 
into the year 
5742" 
the Yidden in their efforts to 
affect the nations of the world.'' 
These actions bore fruit with mil-lions 
of gentiles taking part in various 
campaigns, taking upon themselves to 
fulfill the Sheva Mitzvos and prepare 
the world for ''a time when there will 
be no wars, hunger, jealousy or strife” – 
the time of the Geulah. Yet another link 
in the chain of events set into motion 
by Melech HaMoshiach to prepare the 
world for the Geulah. 
During that year the Rebbe called on 
all educational institutions to institute 
– ”A moment of silence” – 60 seconds 
of thought about the creator of the uni-verse. 
The Rebbe explained: Over the past 
50 years American youth descended 
into moral decay. The only plausible 
explanation for this phenomenon is 
the lack of recognition of a creator. 
For without belief in ''an eye that sees

and an ear that hears,'' so long as he be-lieves 
he won't get caught, he'll do ab-solutely 
anything. And even if he does 
get caught, there’s nothing an easy bribe 
can’t accomplish. It is therefore crucial 
that in every kindergarten, school, high 
school and university, there be, at the 
start of each day, a moment of silence – 
60 seconds to think about G-D. 
In light of this the then president, Ron-ald 
Reagan, called on all schools to begin 
each day with a moment of silence. The 
Rebbe praised this step and encouraged 
the members of the Senate and Con-gress 
to follow suit. Throughout the sub-sequent 
years ‘Moment of silence’ laws 
were enacted in many states. 
The moment of silence causes one 
to contemplate ''Am I really fulfilling 
my purpose on this world? Who is the 
master of this world? What am I doing 
to serve His needs?” It thus prepares the 
world for the coming of Moshiach by 
also preparing the gentiles for his com-ing. 
That year’s roshei teivos “ תהי' שנת גאולת 
משיח ” and “ תהי' שנת גילוי משיח ” were first 
revealed by the Rebbe on Erev Rosh Ha-shana 
of that year. 
An excerpt from Zalmon Jaffe’s “My 
Encounter with the Rebbe – Vol. 14” 
documenting a conversation he had 
with the Rebbe shortly after Simchas 
Torah 5743: 
The Rebbe wanted to know whether I 
had spoken at the Kinus Hatorah. I had 
to answer in the negative. I explained 
that illustrious Rabbonim were address-ing 
the assembly and I was waiting to 
be called. The Rebbe commented "Since 
when have you been a 'nebechel' (I can-not 
find an English translation of this 
word…) and not been able to push your-self 
forward to speak." I maintained that 
I could not interrupt such distinguished 
Rabbonim. The Rebbe declared that "You 
cannot wait until next Simchas Torah to 
speak at the Kinus Hatorah. He will have 
to make a Hemshech (addition) and you 
can continue this afternoon". 
I enquired from the Rebbe "What shall 
I speak about? Shall I talk about our new 
Manchester Lubavitch Yeshiva?" 
The Rebbe remarked "I don't care what! 
As long as you speak about Moshiach". 
תשד"מ – תהא שנת דברי משיח 
5744 is the year best known for the 
takana of learning the daily portion of 
Rambam, with the first cycle beginning 
shortly after Pesach of that year. 
One of the reasons the Rebbe gave 
for choosing specifically the Rambam’s 
Yad Hachazaka was the fact that he was 
the sole codifier who included in his 
work the laws pertaining to the times 
of Moshiach, including the laws of the 
Korbanos – for which we must already 
now acclimate ourselves to – as well as 
what will take place before the coming of 
Moshiach and how he will be revealed. 
תשמ"ה – הי' תהא שנת מלך המשיח 
At the beginning of the year a certain 
individual spoke out against the topic of 
Moshiach. He claimed that yidden are 
presently in golus and that’s their place, 
so one shouldn’t have anything to do 
with Moshiach. Throughout the next 
winter, the Rebbe spoke at great length: 
how is it possible for a yid with a yar-mulke 
and tzitzis to speak out against 
such fundamentals of the torah?! The 
only plausible explanation is אשר חרפו 
עקבות משיחך for "they have disgraced the 
footsteps of Your Moshiach." 
Later on in the year, when claims were 
made against the Rebbe’s nesius, that a 
Rebbe is a private individual and all his 
possessions are inherited by his relatives 
and not by the chassidim. The Rebbe ne-gated 
these claims by explaining that a 
Rebbe is the נשיא הדור and .הנשיא הוא הכל 
Meaning that a Rebbe is a general per-son 
who belongs to the chassidim and 
therefore all his possessions belong to 
the Chassidim. 
During the year, in one of the rally’s 
in 770, Rabbi Goldstein said that ev-ery 
Tuesday night, there was a Tzivos 
Hashem program on the radio (there 
are one hundred thousand members in 
the U.S.A. alone). There was a contest, 
a competition about the Coming of 
Moshiach. We recite three times every 
weekday, in the amida, in Hebrew of 
course, “Sound the great Shofar for our 
freedom, raise a banner to gather our ex-iles, 
and bring us together from the four 
corners of the earth into our Land…….” 
The competition was to bring out this 
concept in the most original way. 
A young lad won the competition 
by producing the longest shofar in ex-istence. 
It was drawn on sheets upon 
sheets of paper, all joined together. The 
end product was a paper shofar which 
stretched over half the length of the 
room. 
Before this year too, on leil erev rosh 
hashonoh, the Rebbe announced the

remarked "I

roshei teivos of the forthcoming year. 
Something unique here was that the 
Rebbe also gave a word for the “hei”. 
ה'תשמ״ה: ה״א הידיעה – השנה. ת' ־ תהא. ש' – 
שנת. מ' ־ מלך. ה' – המשיח 
תשמ"ו 
The year started with a big shturem, 
From Tishrei on, the Rebbe spoke at 
length about the need of each and one of 
us to await the coming of Moshiach. On 
numerous occasions during this period, 
the Rebbe mentioned the famous vort of 
the chida which explains the loshon of 
the tefila "ki liyshuscho kivinu kol hay-om" 
that the yearning itsef for Moshiach 
is a good enough reason for Hashem to 
take us out of Golus. 
On the night of Simchas Torah before 
hakofos the Rebbe spoke strongly about 
the need for Moshiach to come. The 
Rebbe mentioned that he won't mind if 
we will explain that the meaning of nosi 
doreinu is Moshiach Tzidkeinu, as long 
as he comes already! 
During the course of the year, there 
was mention of Moshiach by various 
farbrengens: 
At the end of the farbrengen of 7 
Cheshvon, the Rebbe brought out a Ho-raoh 
from the daily study of Rambam – 
that a Yid must demand from Hashem 
to bring the Geulah. After quoting from 
two important sources the importance 
of demanding the Geulah, the Rebbe re-lated 
a very interesting story: 
One of the letters I received lately was 
from a certain woman who was in dis-tress 
and felt quite scared. She wrote that 
she had received a letter from someone, 
and at the end of the letter, the sender 
instructed her to copy the letter and for-ward 
it to ten additional people. If she 
complies, she will be rewarded, and if 
not she will feel quite sorry... 
The letter itself was full of nonsense, 
and the sender did not sign his name, so 
she doesn't even know where it's coming 
from. Now she is asking me if she should 
be intimidated by the threats that the 
letter carries, and follow the instructions 
by forwarding the ten copies or not. 
I obviously answered her that she 
should tear the letter up and dispose of 
it, and forget the entire story! 
Later on I thought to myself, why is it 
that this was brought to my attention? I 
don't know this woman from anywhere 
and she does not know me either. She 
only heard about my name and therefore 
sent the letter to ask my advice. So why 
would this ever have been brought to 
me in the first place? Until I understood: 
that it’s in order to utilize this method 
for good and holy things. 
Now that we have learned about this 
"chain-letter" method of sending out 
a letter and instructing the receiver to 
forward it on, it would be a good idea 
that each person should compose a let-ter 
quoting these two sources about the 
importance of demanding the Geula, 
and instruct the recipient to forward it 
on to ten more people. Obviously, all the 
threats must be omitted and replaced 
only with blessings! 
Now, the people who we call "Shpitz 
Chabad" may think that it's time to stop 
everything they are doing and just sit 
writing letters all day. Let me therefore 
make it clear: each one should only write 
ten letters and no more! If you have free 
time on your hands afterwards, sit and 
learn Torah instead! 
By the farbrengen of Lag B’omer, there 
was a great shturem in Moshiach, as Reb 
Zalmon Jaffe relates in his “Encounters”: 
At a recent farbrengen – on Lag 
B'Omer, which was relayed – broad-cast 
– to the whole world, they started 
to sing, "We Want Moshiach Now", and 
for one and a half hours – NON STOP – 
they sang this one tune. 
For the first half-an-hour, the Rebbe 
said LeChaim to all those present – as 
he usually does, but for the whole dura-tion 
of the last hour, the Rebbe sat mo-tionless, 
just staring out – and staring at 
those who were singing as if to discover 
whether they really meant what they 
were singing – and if they were singing 
with sincerity and kavonna (concentra-tion). 
Everyone tried to outdo their neigh-bor. 
In Manchester, at the yeshiva, the 
boys went wild with delirium. They 
opened up all of the windows – at 4.00 
a.m after midnight – and sang loudly 
and gustily. I complained that they 
would wake up all the neighbors. One 
of the bochurim retorted – "Let them all 
know that Moshiach is coming NOW!" 
That farbrengen lasted four hours with 
two hours of singing, which was most 
unusual. 
For this year 5746, the Rebbe, for rea-sons 
unknown to us, did not announce a 
roshei teivos. 
תשמ״ז – תהא זו שנת משיח 
On Hei Teves the good news of the 
court victory that the Rebbe and the se-forim 
belong to the chassidim came to 
770 and caused great rejoicing for the 
next seven days. 
In the midst of these seven jubilant 
days, on Asoroh B’Teves, a group of 
Rabbonim presented a specia p’sak to 
the Rebbe by the doorway to his room. 
The p’sak said, that all the kitzim have al-ready 
passed, yidden have been in Golus 
They started to sing, "We Want Moshiach 
Now", and for one and a half hours – NON 
STOP – they sang this one tune.

long enough, and Moshiach has to come 
and redeem them NOW! 
Throughout the rest of the year the 
Rebbe, with great passion, began to 
speak about founding Chabad Houses 
in every corner of the world, to bring 
the light of Chassidus and Yiddishkeit to 
every Jew wherever he may be and thus 
prepare the whole world for the revela-tion 
of Moshiach! 
For this year, the Rebbe set the roshei 
teivos as “Tehei Zu Shnas Moshiach” and 
explained that The Year of Moshiach 
should be in a manner of “Tehei” – which 
means literally, “The Year of Moshiach” 
and “Zu” – in a revealed manner. 
תשמ״ח – חירות (ע״י) משיח 
The year began with a big shturem 
concerning Simcha. The main reason for 
all this was the fact that it was the year 
of Hakhel. When the Beis Hamikdosh 
stood, all the yidden would gather in the 
azoroh on Chol Hamoed Sukkos to lis-ten 
to the king reading special portions 
of the torah and thus fulfill the mitzvah 
of Hakhel – unity of all yidden. 
The Rebbe explained that nowadays 
we must also fulfill this Mitzvah by orga-nizing 
Hakhel gatherings, to unify yid-den, 
not only on Chol Hamoed Sukkos 
as was done then, rather at every oppor-tunity 
throughout the year we should 
conduct such gatherings to unify yid-den. 
All this is connected with simcha, 
for simcha adds so much to unity and 
both these things together bring about 
the coming of Moshiach! 
At first, the Rebbe didn’t announce a 
roshei teivos for this year, rather the gen-eral 
message of the year itself – simcha. 
Later, as requests were received for ro-shei 
teivos, the Rebbe related to this in 
a sicha and announced the roshei teivos. 
The main “koch” in the roshei teivos 
started primarily this year, in which 
the Rebbe explained the roshei teivos at 
length and mentioned them profusely in 
sichos throughout the year. 
The Rebbe explained the roshei teivos 
as follows: 
“This year emphasizes Tismach – re-joice, 
a directive and assurance for every 
yid, to be happy. Since in the previous 
years it has become the norm to con-nect 
the roshei teivos of the year with 
Moshiach, the same should be done this 
year. 
However, there are those who don’t 
like to expend too much effort, therefore 
they try to get other people to do all the 
work for them, despite the fact that this 
in particular is not such a hard thing to 
do.” 
The Rebbe smiled and continued: 
How do I know this? For they asked me 
this question! 
Why, I asked, what’s the need to find 
roshei teivos, when the whole year sig-nifies 
something – “Tismach”. They an-swered 
“we need Moshiach”. 
To this I didn’t have any answer, for I 
too, want and shturem about Moshiach. 
“Tismach”– Simcha could be for many 
reasons, a bris, pidyon haben and even 
a chasunah – simcha beyond limita-tions, 
but above all a connection with 
Moshiach must be found. 
So, I didn’t spare any effort until I 
found a connection between the letter 
“Ches” and Moshiach. It says in gemoroh 
“the harp of the Beis Hamikdosh had 
seven string . . and that of Moshiach will 
have eight”. Thus, we see that Moshiach 
is connected with the number eight 
(“Ches”). 
תשמ״ט – "שנת משיח טובה״ 
Along with the impression left from 
the previous year, a year infused with 
joy and Hakhel gatherings in every pos-sible 
place, and together with the end-less 
“koch” in setting up more and more 
Chabad Houses, the Rebbe came out 
with the call of “Shnas Habinyon”, one 
cannot be content with his current mod-est 
Chabad House, one must expand! 
Chabad is not content with itself as it 
is, Moshiach doesn’t look for the mini-mum 
– he demands maximum effort! 
Whatever is able to be done, must be 
done. Chabad houses provide the vital 
dose of yiddishkeit and chassidishkeit to 
each and every yid and therefore must 
be expanded. It’s up to every Yid to pre-pare 
the world for the complete redemp-tion. 
The world needs to be prepared, and 
the despite the accomplishments that 
were already achieved, we still need to 
do our part to the maximum in order for 
it to really be a place worthy of the rev-elation 
of Elokus. 
תש"נ – תהא שנת ניסים 
In addition to the shturem surround-ing 
the fact that it was the 40th year of 
the Rebbe’s nesius – something the Reb-be 
began to speak about already in 5749 
– the Rebbe reiterated many times that 
the year’s acronym stood for t’hei shnas 
nisim (may it be a year of wonders), es-pecially 
the greatest wonder of them all, 
the coming of Moshiach. 
5750 was the year the Gulf War com-menced, 
a war in which the Rebbe saw 
the fulfillment of the words of the Yalkut 
Shimoni: “Reb Yitzchok said: the year in

which Melech HaMoshiach will be re-vealed, 
all the nations of the world will 
provoke one another. The king of Persia 
will provoke the king of Arabia. The king 
of Arabia will go to the King of Edom to 
seek counsel . . all the nations will be in 
turmoil . . the Jews too will be in turmoil 
saying ‘To where shall we go? To where 
shall we go?’ Then, Hashem will say to 
them, ‘Children, do not fear, for all that I 
have done, I have done for you. Humble 
ones, the time of your redemption has 
arrived.” The Yalkut continues: “The year 
in which Moshiach will come, he will 
stand on the roof of the Beis Hamikdosh 
and say: Humble ones, the time of your 
redemption has arrived.” 
The significance of the year manifest-ed 
itself in several new customs: 
That year the Rebbe began wearing a 
silk kapota all year-round. There were 
those who conjectured that this was be-cause 
it was right before the Geulah so 
the Rebbe donned Shabbos clothing. 
The Rebbe began farbrenging every 
Shabbos. Despite doing so the previ-ous 
year as well, it was that year that the 
Rebbe clearly spoke about it at the Rosh 
Hashana Farbrengen, a Farbrengen that 
fell out on Shabbos – the first time the 
Rebbe farbrenged on a Shabbos of Rosh 
Hashana. 
The Rebbe began proclaiming ‘The 
time of your redemption has arrived,’ 
something which only picked up pace in 
the coming years. 
The story surrounding the Rebbe giv-ing 
5750 its acronymic slogan went as 
follows: 
The Yeshiva in Brunoy, France, would 
release a yearly calendar for its support-ers 
embellished with the year’s acro-nym’s 
slogan (dating back to even before 
the Rebbe officially began naming the 
years). Towards the end of 5749, one of 
the members of the Yeshiva’s Hanhala 
submitted a question to the Rebbe ask-ing 
about the coming year’s acronym. 
That Erev Shabbos he was approached 
by one of the mazkirim and was told 
that the Rebbe would answer him on 
Shabbos. This left him bewildered. But 
indeed, during that Shabbos Farbren-gen 
(Bamidbar 5749) the Rebbe said the 
following: “As has been customary in 
recent year to give a roshei teivos to the 
years, in order to add in Yiras Shomay-im, 
so the coming year’s slogan is ‘May 
it be a Year of Wonders’ ( תהי' שנת נסים ) as 
Moshiach will be here yet this year and 
thus the coming year will already be a 
year of wonders.” Similar words were 
also spoken at the Farbrengen of Yud 
Beis Tamuz 5749. 
ה'תנש"א – הי' תהא שנת אראנו נפלאות 
While 5750 was the ‘Year of Wonders,’ 
5751 was the year Hashem will ‘Show us 
wonders’ ( אראנו נפלאות ), said the Rebbe. 
With the conclusion of the Gulf War 
on Purim of that year, the Rebbe em-phasized 
that Hashem has shown open 
miracles. Miracles comparable to, and 
even greater than, the miracle of Purim. 
Miracles that are a prelude to the com-ing 
of Moshiach. 
Shortly after Pesach, on Chof Ches 
Nissan, the Rebbe spoke the timeless Si-cha 
in which he gave the job of bringing 
Moshiach over to the Chassidim. The 
Rebbe demanded that we give it our all 
to bring about Moshiach’s coming, and 
that everything we do must be to further 
that goal. 
The Rebbe first revealed the slogan of 
that year to Rabbi Leibel Raskin in con-nection 
to a calander being printed by 
Chabad of Moroco. On Shabbos Parshas 
Emor 5750 the Rebbe openly stated it at 
the weekly Farbrengen. 
At the Farbrengen of Shabbos Parshas 
Balak 5750 the Rebbe said that the mir-acles 
of the year 5751 will surpass even 
those of the year 5750. 
תשנ"ב – הי' תהא שנת נפלאות בכל 
The Rebbe’s talk of Moshiach sig-nificantly 
increased in the year 5752. 
On the Shabbos of that year’s Kinus 
Hashluchim the Rebbe proclaimed that 
all that remains to be done is to greet 
That year the

The Emunah in the Rebbe as Moshiach 
also began gaining traction due to nu-merous 
responses Chassidim received 
from the Rebbe – beginning already in 
5751 – to that effect. Those responses 
were also accompanied by countless 
mentions in sichos about the Nosi Hador 
being the Moshiach. 
Just as with 5751, the slogan of the 
year 5752 was once again first revealed 
to Rabbi Leibel Raskin in connection to 
the printing of a calendar by Chabad of 
Moroco – “t’hei shnas niflaos bakol”. 
Throughout the year the Rebbe would 
mention several other roshei teivos for

the year including niflaos bina, niflaos 
ba and niflaos b’eineinu. 
תשנ"ג – תהא שנת נפלאות גדולות 
After 27 Adar 5752, the connection 
between Chassidim and the Rebbe took 
on an unprecedented state – a state of 
suffering and העלם והסתר . After 7 months 
of Chassidim not seeing the Rebbe, the 
Rebbe finally came out on Rosh Ha-shana 
5753. Chassidim were able to see 
the Rebbe, albeit only through a tinted 
window. 
Meanwhile, Chassidim continued to 
add in their activities to bring Moshiach, 
now motivated by a passionate cry of Ad 
Mosai – we want to see our Rebbe! 
After Yom Kippur of that year a bal-cony 
was built alongside the tinted win-dow. 
Beginning then, the Rebbe would 
come out, often even two or three times 
a day, strongly encouraging the singing 
of Yechi, like a father who loves his chil-dren, 
giving them all he can. Chassidim 
believed that it would be from this very 
place, where the Rebbe will be nisgaleh 
any moment. Every time the Rebbe came 
out, this feeling was apparent amongst 
the Chassidim in 770. 
The slogan of that year, t’hei shnas ni-flaos 
g’dolos, was chosen by the Rebbe 
from amongst many other submissions 
presented to the Rebbe by the mazkir 
Reb Leibel Groner. 
תשנ"ד – תהא שנת נפלאות דגולות 
The slogan of the year 5754 was select-ed 
by the Rebbe in Sivan 5753, in con-nection 
with Chabad of Morocco’s cal-endar. 
At first the Rebbe turned down 
all the submissions (amongst them 
were divrei nifloysecha, didan notzach, 
niflaos dibur, etc.). It was only a few 
weeks later, when niflaos degulos (Emi-nent 
Wonders) was proposed, that the 
Rebbe noded his head in affirmation. 
The last time the Chassidim merited 
seeing the Rebbe, l’eis ata, was on 14 
Cheshvon 5754, and a part of Shluchim 
on Rosh Chodesh Kislev 5754. 
Today, when we raise our eyes to the 
balcony on which the Rebbe appeared, 
and we have not yet merited the hisga-lus, 
we cry out in anguish "Ad Mosai"?! 
How can it be that 20 years have passed 
v’adayin lo bo?! One can never forget the 
energy the Rebbe imbued in us Chas-sidim 
from this very place, and what 
Chassidim have consequently done to 
hasten the Rebbe’s hisgalus. Now, 20 
years later, we must make a firm com-mitment 
to dedicate every second of our 
lives to do all we can to bring Moshiach 
now! 
The belief in the

was so real that 
Kehos put out a 
notice that there 
will be a 40% sale

After the Sicha of Chof Ches Nissan 5751, in 
which the Rebbe made a tremendous Shturem to 
do Peulos connected to Moshiach to hasten the 
Geulah, The representatives of Mivtza Kashrus 
of Nshei Chabad of Crown Heights (Mrs. Simp-son 
and Mrs. Gans-burg), notified the Rebbe of 
the Mivtzoim they organized in various malls in 
Brooklyn. Included was a picture of the exhibit 
they had set up in one of the malls. On the ex-hibit 
was written: 
LONGING for MOSHIACH WILL BRING 
HIM HERE TODAY! 
The Rebbe insructed to change the word 
"TODAY" to the word "Sooner".

R' Shneur Zalman was born to his distinguished parents, 
R' Nosson and Esther Gurary, in Kremenchug on the first night of 
Chanuka 5672 (1912). He learned with the chassid R' Yisroel Nevel-er, 
who was a private tutor for the Gurary family. At age 4, he had 
the privilege of seeing and being blessed by the Rebbe Rashab on 
Erev Yom Kippur 5677, in the resort town of Slaviansk. 
In the winter of 5680 the Gurary family had to flee Kremen-chug 
for fear of the approaching Bolsheviks. The entire area was 
extremely tense because of the battles between the various 
factions. In addition to this, famine, the freezing cold, and 
epidemics felled numerous people. Yeshivas Tomchei T'mimim, 
which had moved to Kremenchug only three years earlier, also 
breathed its last in this city before moving to Rostov. 
The roads were dangerous and the only means of 
transportation available to the Gurarys was a freight train. They 
headed east towards Rostov, where the Rebbe Rashab's household 
had moved four years earlier. In order to protect themselves from 
troops on the road, they hired soldiers to accompany them. 
Shneur Zalman, the youngest of the family, was nearly eight years 
old when he and his family moved to Rostov. Memories of their 
flight and the terrors of the trip to Rostov were engraved in his 
memory. 
R' Nosson had mesirus nefesh in educating his children. He 
sold diamonds belonging to his wife and paid a melamed with the 
money. This was during a famine, and the Melamed was able to sup-port 
his eight children comfortably while others went hungry. 
On Yud-Tes Kislev 5680, a few days after they arrived in 
Rostov, R' Zalman was present at the Rebbe Rashab's Farbrengen. 
The Rebbe sat not far from the door which connected the staloveh 
(the dining room) and the kabinet (the Rebbe's room). The room 
was full and R' Zalman didn't enter by way of the door which 
everybody used but from an inner hall of the house. Rebbetzin

When R' Zalman walked in, he was very close to the Rebbe. He 
went over to his father who sat on the side of the Rebbe, and since 
the Rebbe was only wearing a yarmulke on his head, without a hat, 
he didn't recognize him at first and he asked, "Which one is the 
Rebbe?" 
Maybe the Rebbe heard the question, for he immediately asked 
him to say l'chaim (at the Rebbe Rashab's farbrengens, it was 
customary to say l'chaim only when the Rebbe asked for it, and this 
was considered a special kiruv). 
A few months after the Gurarys' arrival in Rostov, the 
Rebbe Rashab passed away. R' Zalman wasn't allowed to attend the 
funeral, but he remembered everything that took place before 
and after the funeral. On Motzaei Shabbos, a few hours before his 
passing, the Rebbe asked those around him, "Nemt mich in zal 
vellin mir zain in einem" (Take me to the zal (from the bedroom to 
the yechidus room) and we'll be together). 
When R' Zalman visited Rostov in his later years, he pointed out 
exactly where the Rebbe's bed was when he passed away. He said 
that on Shabbos morning, some Chassidim came to his parents' 
house in order to take a good bed for the Rebbe. 
One of the experiences he had with the Rebbe Rashab took 
place on one of the Shabbos'os after Pesach. That Shabbos, 
R' Zalman went to daven without his father, who didn't feel well. The 
Rebbe asked how his father was, and then, when he saw young 
Zalman walking around during Krias ha'Torah, he told him to take a 
Chumash and to stand near the table during the kria.

ON THE KNEES OF THE REBBE 
RAYATZ 
In 5681 (1921), R' Zalman's father 
passed away, and the Rebbe Rayatz took 
responsibility for raising him. His melamed 
was the Chossid R' Moshe Rosenblum, a 
secretary of both the Rebbe Rashab and the 
Rebbe Rayatz. The Rebbe Rayatz once told 
Rabbi Yaakov Landau to test R' Zalman. 
R' Yaakov tested him in the Rebbe's house, 
in the dining room, in a room which had a 
door that led to the Rebbe Rayatz's room. 
R' Yaakov walked around during the 
test and passed the door many times. 
R' Zalman didn't know that the Rebbe 
was sitting in his room and listening to 
the test. After the test the Rebbe said 
they should switch melamdim since this 
melamed only taught b'kius and not b'iyun 
(superficially and not in depth), and that 
R' Yechiel Kamisar should be his melamed. 
The Rebbe Rayatz showed a special 
fondness for R' Zalman, and one Simchas 
Torah during the farbrengen, the Rebbe 
put him on the lap of Zalman (the son of 
Folik) Gurary, who was himself a youth at 
the time. Zalman couldn't hold him that 
long, and the Rebbe took him and put him 
on his own lap. 
The Rebbe's plate had meat and 
tzimmes. The Rebbe took water and poured 
it into the tzimmes in his plate and then fed 
it to R' Zalman. R' Zalman didn't like it and 
the Rebbe said, "Es Un Brech, Vestu Blaiben 
A Chossid" (eat and throw up and you'll 
remain a Chossid). 
CONCERN FOR THE SMALLEST 
DETAILS 
In 5682-3 (1922-3), his sister Leah 
married R' Eliezer Karasik. The Rebbe 
Rayatz attended the Kabbalas Panim and 
R' Zalman accompanied the Rebbe Ray-atz. 
When they arrived at the hall, the 
Rebbe Rayatz said that our custom is not 
to eat at the Kabbalas Panim. Years later, 
R' Zalman said that he saw in the Rebbe's 
diary from the wedding of Rebbetzin Shaina 
that the Rebbe Rayatz said the same thing, 
but he qualified it and said that only the 
Mechutanim (relatives) don't eat. 
In 5682, R' Zalman attended the 
wedding of the Rebbe Rayatz's 
oldest daughter Chana with his cousin, 
R' Shemaryohu Gurary. R' Zalman was one 
of the few Chassidim who attended all three 
of the Rebbe Rayatz's daughter's weddings. 
When the Rebbe Rayatz left Rostov for 
Leningrad in 5684, the Gurarys followed. 
In Leningrad there was no melamed for 
R' Zalman and the Rebbe Rayatz sent him 
to Nevel, to the chassid R' Meir Simcha 
Chein. He sent a letter to R' Chein in which 
he asked him to secure a melamed for 
R' Zalman. 
R' Chein didn't find a private melamed 
in Nevel and he tried to get R' Zalman into 
Tomchei Temimim in Nevel. At first the 
hanhala didn't want to accept him since 
he was too young, but then the Rebbe sent 
his secretary, R' Chatshe Feigin, to make 
sure he was accepted. Until he entered the 
yeshiva, R' Chein learned with him. Among 
other things, they learned the introduction 
to Imrei Bina, a long complicated piece with 
deep Chassidic ideas. 
In 5685, the Gurarys moved to 
Poland and R' Zalman attended 
Tomchei Temimim in Warsaw. At that 
time he received letters from the Rebbe 
Rayatz in which the Rebbe guided him in 
what to learn, etc. Among other things, 
the Rebbe told him to study Derech 
Chaim of the Mitteler Rebbe. Out of 
concern for his Chinuch, the Rebbe dealt 
with the smallest details, and once even 
told him to learn dikduk (grammar) in 
order to improve his writing, and to 
improve his handwriting. 
In the summer of 5687 (1927), 
when he was fifteen, R' Zalman had 
appendicitis, and the doctors said he 
needed an operation. He told the 
doctors that he couldn't have the operation 
without his Rebbe's approval, and since the 
Rebbe was in jail at the time and he couldn't 
consult with him, R' Zalman told the 
doctors that he couldn't be operated 
on. They didn't operate and R' Zalman 
miraculously recovered without an 
operation. 
R' Zalman made great efforts to be 
with the Rebbe Rayatz in Riga for Rosh 
HaShana 5689. Despite the financial 
difficulties and the hardships entailed in 
obtaining travel permits, 
R' Zalman managed to be with the 
Rebbe for Tishrei. From that year 
until this one, R' Zalman spent every Rosh 
HaShana with the Rebbeim, except for Rosh 
HaShana 5690 (1930) when the Rebbe Ray-atz 
was in America, and Rosh HaShana 
5700 (1940) when the Rebbe Rayatz was in 
bombed out Warsaw and R' Zalman was in 
Riga. 
In Kislev 5689 (1929), R' Zalman 
attended the wedding of the Rebbe and Reb-betzin 
Chaya Mushka. 
When the Rebbe Rayatz was about to

city before Shiva-Asar B'Tammuz in order 
to begin his trip before the Three Weeks. 
R' Zalman joined the Rebbe on his trip 
outside the city. 
A SPECIAL SHLICHUS 
In 5691 (1931), the Rebbe Rayatz devised 
a plan to expand the network of Chabad 
Yeshivos. R' Zalman Gurary was picked 
for this special Shlichus. He traveled to 
check out the Yeshivos in various cities in 
Vohlin, to strengthen the learning of 
Chassidus in towns, and to 
establish new Yeshivos in 
appropriate places. 
Before leaving on this mission, the Rebbe 
called him to a yechidus and said, "When 
sending an emissary, the chochmas [i.e., 
the successes] are the Shliach's and the 
stupidities are associated with the one who 
sent him. Don't do anything foolish so that 
it won't be attributed to me. 
"And what is your shlichus? Your Shlichus 
is to make Chassidim. How do you make 
Chassidim? When the Shliach himself is a 
Chossid, then he can make Chassidim". 
In the course of this Shlichus, R' Gurary 
received detailed instructions in dozens of 
letters from the Rebbe (that were printed 
in the Rebbe Rayatz's Igros Kodesh, vol. 11, 
and more recently in vol. 16). 
R' Gurary sent dozens of letters to the 
Rebbe Rayatz in which he gave detailed 
reports of his work. Copies of these 
letters, which were kept in the Rebbe Rayatz's 
archives, were later returned to R' Gurary's 
possession. 
R' Gurary's Shlichus extended to other 
towns and continued into 5692. While on 
this Shlichus, R' Gurary gave many Shiurim 
in Nigleh and Chassidus, and he met with 
many Gedolei HoRabbonim and Roshei 
Yeshivos. After concluding this Shlichus, 
he returned to Warsaw where he served 
as Maggid Shiur in the younger level of 
Tomchei Temimim. At this time too, the 
personal relationship he had with the 
Rebbe was apparent, for the Rebbe Rayatz 
was personally responsible for his salary. 
MINISTER OF THE COURTYARD 
In 5692, R' Gurary attended the 
wedding of R' M.M. Horenstein and Rebbetzin 
Shaina (may Hashem avenge their blood). 
The wedding took place in the summer, yet 
it rained throughout the Badeken, and it was 
very dark. Years later, R' Gurary said that he 
noticed that the Rebbe Rayatz looked ex-tremely 
gloomy and he was very shaken. 
When he was in the town of Druzke-nik 
(a resort area) on the border of Poland 
and Lithuania, the Rebbe Rayatz stayed 
in a hotel and needed a Minyan. It was 
R' Gurary's job to find a Sefer Torah, 
however, in this particular town there was 
only a Torah which had the words " "פצוע דכא 
written with the letter Hei, which is not the 
Minhag Chabad. 
R' Gurary asked the Rebbe Rayatz, 
through Rashag, what to do, and he was told 
that our tradition has it that the Alter Rebbe 
once stayed in a city where there were only 
Sifrei Torahs in which פצוע דכא was written 
with a Hei, and he read from them or went 
up to the Torah when he was called for an 
Aliya. 
While there, R' Gurary took care of the 
Rebbe's household's needs, and had the 
privilege of the Rebbe Rayatz bestowing 
upon him the nickname, "Minister Devara" 
(Minister of the Courtyard). 
WITH THE REBBE RAYATZ IN 
WARSAW 
When the Rebbe Rayatz arrived in 
Warsaw, they had to find a bakery in 
order to bake Matzos. R' Gurary was one 
of the main people involved in this. At first 
they found a bakery in Otvotsk, but while 
Kashering the oven, a fire broke out and 
burnt the oven. Then they found a bakery 
in the nearby town of Parnitsh, but there 
were many rabbanim and Admurim in 
Parnitsh, and it was almost impossible to bake 
Matzos on Erev Pesach because there were 
many who wanted to do so. 
R' Gurary asked the Rebbe what to do, for 
we have the custom of baking Matzos on 
Erev Pesach after Chatzos (noon). The Reb-be 
said that they could bake before noon, 
and this is what they did. 
The Rebbe Rayatz asked R' Gurary to build 
a model of the Beis HaMikdosh out of wood. 
There was a Jew in Warsaw who had made a 
model of the Beis HaMikdash, exactly as the 
Gemara describes it, and the Rebbe wanted 
R' Gurary to do the same. Since he didn't 
want people to come to him with com-plaints 
that he hadn't made it properly, and 
since the cost would be high, and if he didn't 
make it precisely he thought the Rebbe 
would have complaints that he wasted mon-ey, 
he sought 
all sorts of 
excuses, say-ing 
he wasn't 
capable of 
doing it, etc. 
The Rebbe 
said, "I'm 
t e a c h i n g 
you Orach Chaim, and you're teaching me 
Choshen Mishpat..." (i.e., I'm guiding your 
spiritual life, and you respond with monetary 
considerations). 
The Rebbe Rayatz once traveled to visit 
his uncle, R' Moshe Horenstein. At the 
entrance stood an old Chossid by the name 
of Shimon Greenberg. The Rebbe told him 
to stay near the door, while he asked R' 
Gurary to join him on the trip. This was 
remarkable, the Rebbe taking R' Zalman 
who was a bachur, while the old Chossid 
was left near the door. The Rebbe explained 
that he was taking R' Zalman because he 
was afraid that if he left him near the door 
he would steal his manuscripts... 
When the Rebbe arrived in Otvotsk, 
R' Gurary was appointed as Gabbai 
responsible for allowing people in for 
yechidus. Most people lived in Warsaw and 
they would come in the evening in order to 
see the Rebbe for Yechidus. 
On the day the Rebbe arrived, they 
davened Mincha in the front room and 
didn't say Tachnun. The Rebbe asked R' Gu-rary 
why they hadn't said Tachnun, and R' 
Gurary answered that when the Rebbe came 
it's Yom Tov, and on Yom Tov you don't say 
Tachnun. 
The Rebbe responded: "I understand that 
when the Rebbe comes you don't sin, but 
that you don't say Tachnun when the Rebbe 
comes, that I don't understand." 
The Rebbe once took R' Gurary for 
Kiddush Levana so that he could say 
"Sholom Aleichem" to him. There were 
many trees in Otvotsk and the Rebbe looked 
for a place to be Mekadesh the Levana 
without standing under a tree. While 
walking, the Rebbe tripped over a wire fence 
and nearly fell. Afterwards, the Rebbe gave 
R' Gurary money to buy Mashke, so that the 
Chassidim could farbreng (about the 
miracle that had happened). 
While in Otvotsk for Pesach, there was 
not a large crowd for Pesach. Among the 
Kislev 5774 | 29
guests were only the Rebbe's relatives, 
R' Gurary, his friend R' Meir Glazman, and 
Feivel Greener. Before the meal, the Rebbe 
Rayatz's grandson told everybody where to 
sit, as the Rebbe had instructed him, on the 
right or left, near or far. The guests were 
called "the Rebbetzin's guests." 
R' Gurary was embarrassed to eat in front 
of the Rebbe Rayatz and so he refrained 
from eating. Seeing this, the Rebbe told the 
story about R' Yekusiel Liepler, about the 
Tzemach Tzedek sending him Matzoh on 
Erev Pesach, which he ate before Bedikas 
Chometz because he thought the Tzemach 
Tzedek had sent the Matzoh in order 
to help him with his Avodas Hatefillah 
Barichus. The Rebbe Rayatz concluded the 
story by saying that from this we see that 
when the Rebbe gives, you take. 
THOUSANDS OF ANSWERS AND 
RESPONSES 
After the passing of the Rebbe Rayatz, 
R' Gurary became Mekushar to the Rebbe 
heart and soul. The fact that he had been 
very mekushar and close to the Rebbe Ray-atz, 
didn't affect his Hiskashrus to the Reb-be. 
It's impossible to write about the 
special connection R' Gurary had with the 
Rebbe in one article, not even in a series of 
articles. R' Gurary wrote to the Rebbe 
nearly every day about what he had done 
that day, and everything he did was with the 
Rebbe's Haskama and Bracha. The letters 
and responses he received from the Rebbe 
over the years number in the thousands! 
UTTER DEVOTION TO THE 
REBBE'S MOSDOS 
When the Rebbe first refused to accept 
the Chabad leadership, R' Gurary asked the 
Rebbe for a Yechidus. The Rebbe smiled and 
said: "What, you're also one of those?" 
R' Gurary said: "With Chaya and Yechida 
(the transcendent levels of the soul through 
which a Rebbe bonds with Chassidim), you 
don't play around." 
The Rebbe became serious and accepted 
him for Yechidus. 
At this time there was a special Vaad that 
worked on things having to do with the Ne-sius. 
R' Gurary was a member of this Vaad, 
and in his later years related that the Vaad 
was established at the initiative of the Rebbe, 
who called upon the members of the Vaad 
and appointed them to the task. 
R' Gurary devoted himself to 
getting the Rebbe to accept the Nesius in all 
matters. When he saw that the Rebbe was not 
allowing the chozrim into his room 
after the saying of a maamer, as all the 
previous Rebbeim did, he entered for a 
Yechidus and asked the Rebbe why they 
didn't do Chazara. 
The Rebbe explained that the previ-ous 
Rebbeim were precise in their word-ing 
and only the Mitteler Rebbe was not so 
exacting in the words but in the inyan. I too, 
said the Rebbe, am not precise in my words, 
so there's not much need for Chazara. 
R' Gurary's devotion to the Rebbe's 
Mosdos was limitless. He got many 
other wealthy people whom he knew from 
business to contribute to the Rebbe's 
Mosdos. He himself gave tens of millions 
to the Rebbe's Mosdos. He was a member 
of the Hanhala of Kehos, and thanks to 
him, this Mosad is one of the most illustri-ous 
mosdos of Chabad in recent decades. 
Out of hundreds of Sifrei Maamarim of 
the Rebbeim that were printed in the last 
fifty years. R' Gurary paid for most of them 
to be published. The Rebbe referred to this 
a few times, even at public farbrengens, 
saying what a great Zechus it was to pay to 
have Seforim printed. 
On Simchas Torah in one of the early 
years of the Rebbe's Nesius, R' Gurary said 
to the Rebbe that since Simchas Torah 
night is considered an auspicious time in 
Lubavitch (it was the time the Rebbe Rashab 
blessed all the Bochurim who needed an 
exemption from the Russian army), he was 
asking the Rebbe that he have the Zechus to 
have a Yechidus each year on Simchas Torah 
night and be blessed by the Rebbe. 
The Rebbe agreed on condition 
that R' Gurary keep it a secret so that 
others wouldn't be jealous. Every year, on 
Simchas Torah night, he would have a special 
Yechidus with the Rebbe. 
One Simchas Torah, R' Gurary had a 
terrible kidney attack. The doctor said he 
had to go to the hospital for an operation. 
R' Gurary's daughter, Mrs. Esther 
Sternberg, who was a little girl at the time, 
ran to the Rebbe's house to ask for a Beracha 
for her father. 
The Rebbetzin opened the door and when 
she heard what was going on she went 
upstairs to the Rebbe to ask for a beracha. 
The Rebbe said he should go to Dr. Seligson. 
The little girl said: "But my father already 
saw a doctor, and the doctor said he has to 
go to the hospital!" 
The Rebbetzin told the Rebbe what she 
said and the Rebbe said: "Nu, if they already 
asked a doctor, they should do what he said." 
When the girl returned home and 
R' Gurary heard that at first the Rebbe had 
said they should consult with Dr. Seligson, 
he decided not to do anything without Dr. 
Seligson's approval. 
When Dr. Seligson arrived he said the 
situation wasn't that bad and he could wait 
until after Yom Tov. A few hours later the 
stone passed and the next day R' Gurary was 
in his usual place, selling Hakafos on behalf 
of Merkoz LeInyonei Chinuch. When they 
told the Rebbe that the stone had passed, the 
Rebbe said: "Nu, I said they should listen to 
Seligson." 
R' Gurary had a special Chassidishe 
cleverness. In one of the early years of the 
Nesius the Rebbe returned from the Ohel af-ter 
sunset, not having davened Mincha yet. 
Following Yud Shvat 5753 (1993), when the Rebbe consented to the global 
televising of the encouragement of Yechi, there were members of 
Anash who tried to hamper the efforts of spreading this message. 
Reb Zalmen, who was a member of Agudas Chasidei Chabad and a staunch 
proponent of these efforts, did his utmost to stonewall those trying to impede on the 
Rebbe’s wishes. 
During this period, Reb Zalmen submitted a letter to Rebbe asking the 
following: “Regarding those who tirelessly fight me . . solely because I proudly 
pronounce the Rebbe as Moshiach, must I fight this to the point of Mesiras Nefesh?” 
When the letter was read to the Rebbe, the Rebbe answered affirmatively.

The Rebbe asked R' Gurary: "When is sunset 
this time of year?" 
R' Gurary answered: "Five minutes after 
the Rebbe finishes Mincha!" 
The Rebbe smiled and was pleased and 
went to daven Mincha. 
AN ETERNAL ZECHUS 
Just as the Rebbe Rayatz called him 
"Minister of the Courtyard," the Rebbe 
appointed R' Gurary as the one 
responsible for all his household expenses 
as well as anything connected with the 
Rebbe and Rebbetzin's medical needs. 
On Chaf-Beis Shevat 5748, a few hours 
after the Rebbetzin passed away, the Rebbe 
called R' Gurary to his room at home and 
with a serious look told him that the Zechus 
of being the one primarily involved with the 
nifteres (deceased) would stand by him and 
his children and grandchildren until the end 
of time. 
R' Gurary was once involved in build-ing 
a Sukkah for the Rebbe, and among 
other things, he needed to be sure that they 
could sit in the Sukkah without any halachic 
questions arising. For this purpose, he 
trimmed the trees at 770 that lined the way 
one goes to Tashlich. 
The Rebbe asked him how he could cut 
the trees and R' Gurary wrote to the Rebbe 
that in Shulchan Aruch it says that only 
fruit trees may not be cut, but barren trees 
may be cut. The Rebbe said that when being 
involved in the needs of the public, one must 
have Yishuv Ha'daas (presence of mind), and 
in this matter it says in Seifer HaChinuch 
that it's forbidden to cut trees because it 
causes pain to the residents of the city, and 
by cutting the branches he caused pain to 
those who live in the house. 
As someone alert to the Rebbe's needs, 
R' Gurary came up with the idea of building 
a special place for Tashlich near 770 to save 
the Rebbe the bother of walking to the park. 
After receiving the Rebbe's consent and 
blessing, he brought people to dig behind 
the building and they discovered a spring 
under 770. From there, the water flows into 
the special structure used for Tashlich. 
Before Rosh HaShana, the Rebbe gave 
him various instructions in connection with 
Tashlich – that there should be trees around 
it and fish. Every year, the family made sure 
to bring fish. By the way, it is from this spring 
that they draw water for Mayim Shelanu for 
Pesach. 
When the Rebbe wanted to point out a 
particular thing but didn't want to do so at a 
farbrengen, he would call R' Gurary to a ye-chidus 
and have him convey his message. An 
example: In the early years the Rebbe stayed 
in the Sukkah while people said the bracha 
on the Rebbe's Daled Minim. After a while, 
the Rebbe told R' Gurary that he didn't want 
to take the time, and requested of him to ar-range 
an alternative. 
R' Gurary arranged that R' Meir 
Harlig would take the Daled Minim from 
the Rebbe, thus saving the Rebbe precious 
time. Aside from this, dozens of Horaos and 
Hanhagos were transmitted through him 
over the years. In connection with the Bar 
Mitzva of his sons, and later when they mar-ried, 
R' Gurary received instructions and 
Hanhagos from the Rebbe. 
In later years, R' Gurary was the Shliach 
of Anash to give the Rebbe the Pan Kloli and 
to bless the Rebbe on his birthday, Yud-Alef 
Nissan. 
AN ABOUT-FACE – FOR MOSHIACH 
In more recent years, R' Gurary would 
speak a great deal about faith in what the 
Rebbe said. He would always quote from 
the Haftora of Rosh HaShana, the day of his 
passing, which describes the strong faith 
Chana had in the promise of the Navi. The 
following is an excerpt from an article R' 
Gurary wrote 
before Yud- 
Alef Nissan in 
one of the later 
years: 
In the story 
of Shiras Chana 
it says that Eli 
HaKohen who 
was a Navi gave her a Bracha, " ופני' לא היו עוד " (her 
countenance was no longer the same). Why 
add that final comment? What relevance 
does it have to the Bracha Eli gave her? 
Prior to these words, the Possuk writes, "and 
the G-d of Israel should grant your request 
that you asked of Him." So it's clear that his 
Bracha would be fulfilled as all words of a 
Navi are fulfilled, what is the Chidush of the 
words " ?"ופני' לא היו עוד 
The answer is simple: True, the Bra-cha 
of a Navi is always fulfilled, but there 
can be obstacles and delays. Therefore, in 
order for Eli's bracha to be fulfilled without 
obstacles and delays, there had to be a 
"vessel" for this, and the vessel was Emuna 
and Bitachon – "Her countenance was no 
longer the same." If instead of her former 
bitterness she felt joy, to the point that her 
physical countenance reflected her Simcha 
and Bitachon, this itself became the vessel 
for Eli's bracha to be fulfilled "below ten 
handbreadths," as indeed happened. 
Chana's prayer was special and the 
Gemara learns many halachos 
from her prayer. It wasn't merely a 
personal prayer but

something that pertained to 
future generations. From this 
story we learn that in order for 
a Bracha from a Tzaddik to be 
realized, we need the vessel of 
faith. This is the avoda of our 
times "and her countenance was 
no longer the same." Emuna. 
I heard a story from R' Moshe 
Leib Rodstein, that once a woman 
came to R' Mendel Horodoker 
to ask for a Bracha for a child. 
R' Mendel told her: "If you will 
accept my bracha in such a way 
that you feel your hands moving 
[i.e., that you feel as though you 
are holding the baby and rocking 
him], I will bless you." When she 
said she would, he blessed her, 
and his bracha was fulfilled. Her 
emuna wasn't way up there in the 
seventh heaven; it was palpable. 
And it was this that made her a 
vessel to see the fulfillment of the 
Bracha. 
In our generation we see 
how the Rebbe's words were 
always "on the mark." On many 
occasions the Rebbe told us 
that "our generation is the last 
generation of Galus and the first 
of Geula" and so we need to 
believe this with simple faith. 
When the Razah (the brother 
of the Rebbe Rashab) was asked 
to be Rebbe after the passing of 
the Rebbe Maharash he said: 
"Everything has an 
intermediary. Between a wealthy 
man and a poor man is a man of 
average means. Between a wise 
man and a fool there's someone 
in between, etc., but between a 
rebbe and a thief there's nothing 
in between, either you're a Rebbe 
or you're a thief [i.e., a thief, who 
is Gonev Daas – he fools people]." 
The same is true with the 
emuna in what the Rebbe 
said, there's no partial belief. 
Either you believe or ch"v... 
The fact that much time 
has elapsed and we still 
don't have the true and 
complete Geulah (and there are 
IN THAT WHICH THE REBBE KOCHS, WE TOO MUST KOCH 
An address delivered by Reb Zalmen at a Kinus in 770 on Chof Zayin Nissan 5753 
The main thing we must speak about, and that 
which we have the duty to speak about, is how 
to accomplish the point that I will elaborate on 
later, something that is the call of the hour: This 
that two years ago the Rebbe gave us a mission 
and said he is leaving it to us. I, in particular, 
must speak of this for it was to me personally 
that the Rebbe later said ‘loy noga v’loy poga’ 
(it has had no effect). The Rebbe did not say 
this just to put someone down, but in order to 
encourage and prod us into action. It is therefore 
specifically incumbent on me to speak about this 
issue, particularly since two years have already 
passed since that day. 
Before that, however, I wish to speak of 
something that is clear to me and very near 
to my heart. I have already spoken of it more 
than once, but now, when we see the Rebbe 
‘screaming,’ literally – we all see and hear his 
screams – we therefore must do all we can, 
and in accordance to Torah, we must cry out 
to Hashem to heal the Rebbe, as it is written 
ויזעקו אל ה' (and they cried out to Hashem) 
followed by ישלח דברו וירפאם (He sent His word 
and healed them). 
Now let me move on to my second and central 
point, a topic that must be discussed. This that 
I am going to speak about can be approached 
from various angles. I, however, wish to discuss 
only its practical dimensions. 
I would like to relate something I heard while 
in Tel Aviv, something that had a very strong 
impact on me. Whether it had an impact on the 
others there, I do not know, but me it affected 
tremendously. I would like to retell it here so 
that hopefully it will impact someone here too. 
The Chossid Reb Shaul Ber Zislin, whom 
I remember from back in Kremenchug as an 
extremely holy man, related that in the early 
years of the Rebbe Rashab’s nesius he was sitting 
between a group of elder Chassidim who 
were arguing over which Chassidus should be 
learned. One said Imrei Bina, another said the 
Maamarim of the Tzemach Tzedek and yet 
another said the Maamorim of the Rebbe 
Maharash (many of those present were 
Chassidim of the Maharash). On the side was 
standing Reb Osher Nikolei’ever, the Shochet 
of Nikolayev, who was not counted amongst 
the Chassidic greats, but he was a wholehearted 
Mekushar to the Rebbe. He was only a young 
man, yet he interjected into the discussion 
saying that he doesn’t understand why they 
are even arguing. “We all know,” he said, “that 
whatever the Rebbe kochs in, we must Koch in 
as well ( .(אין וואס דער רבי קאכט זיך אין דעם דארף מיר קאכן 
The Rebbe says Maamorim every Shabbos, so 
this is the Rebbe’s koch and it must be ours too. 
How can you even argue about this topic?” 
Now too we can argue over what to do and 
bring up many different solutions, but I would 
like to speak practical. We see what the Rebbe 
does and we know in what he kochs. The Rebbe 
goes out twice a day and with his last strengths 
encourages the singing of Yechi. So what 
relevance do all the opinions have? What the 
Rebbe does, so must we do, especially when it 
is done with his last strengths. And now we’re 
going to argue about it? This is utter 
nonsense! We see clearly what the Rebbe does! The 
Rambam writes that we believe in Matan 
Torah because we ourselves saw it. Same here, 
we see how the Rebbe comes out twice a day and 
shows us what to do, and you’re going to debate 
over whether to believe or not believe? Utter 
nonsense! We can argue over different methods 
to go about it, but we must always bear in mind 
that what the Rebbe does, is what we do. Those 
who say that such actions can have adverse 
effects are totally missing the point! Do they not 
realize that the Rebbe knows that people see 
what is going on and it is being publicized all 
over the world? Does he not know that it can do 
“damage”? Yet we see that he still does it… 
When it comes to health, parnasa, business 
– whether to invest or not to invest – you rely 
on the Rebbe, but when it comes to something 
the Rebbe does twice daily, suddenly you start 
having doubts? After all we bore witness to, do 
you still have any questions? It could be that 
logically you have a point, but the Rebbe shows 
us twice a day otherwise. Imagine if you were 
to ask the Rebbe whether to do something or 
not, something which you fear can do damage, 
and the Rebbe would answer to go ahead with 
it. Would you even think of doing otherwise? 
What can be greater than the fact that the Rebbe 
comes out twice a day, with his last strengths, 
and encourages the singing of Yechi Adoneinu 
Moreinu Virabeinu Melech Hamoshiach 
Leolam Voed? After all that we are going to get 
into ‘logical’ debates? This is how it was all the 
years, and the same is with Moshiach: what the 
Rebbe says, we do, even to the point of Mesiras 
Nefesh, just as the Rebbe is currently doing with 
Mesiras Nefesh. 
May Hashem help that we should do to this 
effect, for it is certain that the Rebbe knows of all 
the “problems” and “damage” and bobeh mayses. 
Let us be like the Chossid who said “Whatever 
the Rebbe kochs in, we must Koch in as well”!

Hiskashrus today - only through Moshiach It is with great pleasure that we present our readership with this Expanded Edition of Moshiach Weekly, which is being released in time for the Kinus HaShluchim Haolomi. For a Chossid living with Moshiach, the sole mention of the Kinus HaShluchim evokes memories of the Kinus HaShluchim that took place in 5752, during which the Rebbe revolutionized the idea of Shlichus in our time. At the Pesichas HaKinus which traditionally took place at the Rebbe’s Farebrengen on Shabbos afternoon, the Rebbe’s message to the Shluchim was clear: Your Avodah to spread Chassiddus and Yiddishekeit to all corners of the globe has been completed! The only thing remaining in Shlichus is to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu. The Rebbe clarified that obviously all of the previous Avodah’s (Mivtza Tefillin, Hafotzas Hamayo-nos Chutzah etc) must still be carried out, however, now, the main aspect of Shlichus which must permeate all other aspects is the Inyan of Moshiach. Of course, this Sicha didn’t come as a surprise. It came as a direct continuation to the Sichos of the summer of 5751 and the beginning of 5752 in which the Rebbe emphasized over and over again that the concept of Moshiach has to be the main focus of our Avodah in our historic time. * * * As is well known, the main efforts of the Friedik-er Rebbe in Soviet Russia were focused on bulding Chadorim and ensuring that Jewish children receive a proper Chinuch. This was an enormous Chiddush at the time, since it was the initial breakthrough for what we would call Mivtzoim. Until then, Chassidim were ac-customed to Avoda Penimis, in which each one worked on himself and removed himself from matters of this world. A genuine Chassid was certainly not someone who walked about among others. The Friediker Rebbe came along and turned things upside down. He demanded of the great Chassidim, tremendous Baalei Avoda who devoted all their time to Avodas Hashem, to go “out there” and gather unedu-cated Jewish children and learn Alef Beis with them. During this time the Frierdiker Rebbe once farbrenged with a Koch about the Mesirus Nefesh demanded of ev-ery Chossid to ensure the proper Chinuch for Tashbar (Tinokos Shel Beis Rabon – Jewish children). Among those present was the famous Chassid Reb Itche der Masmid who was known for his outstanding piety and asceticism. In the middle of the Farbrengen, the Rebbe turned to R’ Itche and said, “If you are involved in Tash-bar then you are mine. But if not, then you may still be Itche [i.e., a Maskil and an Oved, etc.], but you have no connection with me.” In other words, although Reb Itche was an outstand-ing Chassid, nevertheless when the call of the hour was teaching children, the Friediker Rebbe demanded of him to leave the Tziyur he had been raised to be and which he was used to, and get used to a new Avoda. So too with us and the question about Hiskashrus without Inyonei Moshiach. It’s hard to relate to the new Mivtza the Rebbe told us to do, and many of us try our best to stick with our previous Tziyur. In the later years, the Rebbe referred often to “Tekufa Hoacharona” (this most recent period). The Rebbe re-fers to it as a different era and not just as specific change in behavior. Obviously, the change from one era to another is much more radical than a specific change, which is why effort is required to adjust. And just as they had to adjust in previous generations, we too must make the requisite changes. Once the Rebbe announced Mivtza Tefillin, there just can’t be a Chabad House that does not do this Mivtza and which champions Hiskashrus without Mivtza Tefil-lin! Once the Rebbe founded Tzivos Hashem, there can-not be a Chassid who raises his Children to be “a Chas-sid of the Rebbe” without being a soldier in Tzivos Hashem, and without the slogan of Moshiach Now. Likewise, when the Rebbe made it clear that the focus now is on Kabbalas Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu, and he emphasized that this is the gateway for everything else and this is the only Shlichus, it is clear that if we want to be “the Rebbe’s Chassidim”, we must put all of our en-ergy into this Mivtza, and if not, there is a big question mark on our Hiskashrus to the Rebbe R”L. It is to this end that we are printing this Expanded edi-tion, in which we present an array of artices, designed to give the reader a taste of the Rebbe’s Shturem about Moshiach, and the Chassidim’s activities which were done it its wake. It is our fervent hope that this publication will inspire its readers to do more in all Inyonim connecyed with 'the only Shlichus', being Mekabel Pnei Moshiach, and may this be the מכה בפטיש in bringing the Geula, and may we be zoche to celebrate this Kinus together with The Rebbe in the Beis HaMikdosh HaShlishi.   • 4. When speaking in connection with the Kinus Hashluchim, it is of utmost importance to look at the last Sicha which the Rebbe has spoken to us, Shluchim. In 5752 – the last time the Rebbe addressed the Shluchim, the Rebbe told us, that we now have only one Shlichus to accomplish: To be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu! The Rebbe is telling us that everything in our Avo-das Hashluchus must be permeated with one thing: Moshiach! Everyone is busy contemplating what exactly needs to be done, and how to prepare themselves and the entire world to greet Moshiach. One says like this and the other says like that, and everyone is thinking how to do it best. Everyone is so involved in the debates to the extent that they forget about the point! They forget who we are and with what we are supposed to be living. This one is involved in this and the other is involved in that, and they are all doing good things. Some are Shtureming in Mitzvas Tefillin – What is greater than Tefillin? Others are involved in Mitzvas Ahavas Yisroel – What is greater than Ahavas Yisroel? They're all good things, but they forget about the main thing! The main thing is Moshiach! Moshiach! Moshiach! We must therefore remember, that even if we are doing all good things but the spirit of Moshiach is not felt in them – this means that we are sleeping! And we must be aware that if we are sleeping and not fulfilling the main task that we have, even the good things that we are doing are not being done the way they should be. No matter what we believe about the Rebbe, no matter our affiliations, our Shlichus must be dedicated to bring-ing Moshiach! How can it be, that notwithstanding the fact that it's been so long since we last heard Sichos from the Rebbe, we still haven’t brought about the Hisgalus. We must do all we can to bring Moshiach now! Everyone remembers how a journalist came to the Rebbe a day before 27 Adar asking for a message to print in in the newspapers. The Rebbe answered that it is al-ready been publicized that Moshiach is not only coming but he is already on his way! Everyone remembers how strong the Rebbe spoke about the need for Moshiach. This must not remain a memory from the past, we must take action and bring Moshiach now! 4 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 6. A sicha of the Rebbe Kislev: A Month of Geulah In the month of Kislev in which we find ourselves, we find a few special days which have a connection with the Geulah. The 9th of Kislev is the birthday and yartzeit of the Mitteler Rebbe. The Mitteler Rebbe started to disseminate chassidus in a broad way, to the extent that he was informed on to the government, which in essence was a Kitrug above trying to put a stop to this new level of Hafotzas Hachassidus. On Yud Kislev the charges and accusations were dropped without major conflict, which led to the spreading of chassidus in an even broader manner. The next special day we find in this month which has to do with the Geulah, is the Chag Hageulah of the Alter Rebbe – the founder of chassidus Chabad, on the 19th day of the month. By contrast to the short, fiery ma’amorim which were said before the arrest, the ma’amorim delivered after the liberation were very much more embodied in intellectual explanations. After the Alter Rebbe’s histalkus in 5573 his son the Mitteler Rebbe accepted the mantle of leadership, he started to say chassidus in a broader more explanatory fashion than his father. This all serves as a preparation for the redemption which comes through יפוצו מעינותיך חוצה beginning with Yud Tes Kislev – the redemption of the Alter Rebbe and further developed on Yud Kislev – the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe. Since we have seen the success of hafotzas hamayonos throughout the years despite the obstacles they faced, and the redemptions which they experienced during this month: Yud Kislev, Yud Tes Kislev and Chanukah, this gives us extra encouragement in our belief that now is the time, and that this is the month for Moshiach to come NOW!   • 7. IF YOU KNEW, WHY DID YOU SEND US?! On the night of Tisha B’Av, R’ Chanoch of Li-timorsk (later the Alexander Rebbe) sat on the threshold of the shul in Peshischa. He said: “There was a simple villager who did not know the Alef-Beis or any Jewish customs. All his life he yearned to live with his fellow Jews but was unable to do so until he reached old age. It was only then that he liquidated his farm and moved to town. “Erev Pesach, he wanted to have a proper seder, but he had never seen one. He was too embarrassed to ask anyone and so he sent his wife to the neigh-bor, ostensibly to borrow something but in the meantime, to see how the table was set. “Just at the time that she visited, the neighboring husband and wife quarreled and the husband took a thick stick and hit his wife. The former villager’s wife returned home downcast upon seeing what a proper seder looked like. “Her husband asked her what she had seen, but she remained silent. He asked her again but she re-fused to talk. He became very angry and grabbed a stick and hit her. “She sighed and said, ‘If you knew, why did you send me there to look?’” R’ Chanoch finished his story and was silent, but his audience burst into laughter. R’ Yechiel Meir of Gustinin said: “Why are you laughing? Isn’t this the complaint of your souls to Hashem – You knew we would sin, so why did you send us to Golus?” A STORY A Chassidishe Ma'aseh Kislev 5774 | 7

In the recent past, the Rebbe continued, a new Inyan has been added and become the one Shlichus which must permeate and elevate all other facets of Shlichus: “To be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu BiGeulah Hoamitis VeHashleimah”. 8 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 9. The time is shortly after the Histalkus of the Fri-erdiker Rebbe. Lubavitch is deep in mourning over the sudden passing of the Rebbe. It has been only 10 years since Lubavitch relocated to the western hemi-sphere, which, in the words of the Alter Rebbe, did not experience Matan Torah. Under the direction of the Frierdiker Rebbe and his son-in-law, then known as the Ramash, the Chassidim rebuilt the Chabad community and its Mosdos with sweat and blood. At that time, only one thing was of concern to the Askanim and Chassidim: ensuring Lubavitch conti-nuity. They hoped that a new Rebbe would slowly continue developing the Lubavitch community, both in America and abroad. The Rebbe, however, had different plans. Plans extending far beyond the horizons of the Lubavitch community. Plans of influencing every single Yid, re-gardless of background or affiliation, to follow in the ways of the Torah, and of our Rabbei’im. In no time, Chassidm began hearing new concepts, "going out on Shlichus," “lighting up the world" and so forth. Many energetic Chassidishe Yungeleit, who could have contributed plenty to the development and ex- Kislev 5774 | 9
  • 10. pansion of the Chabad community at home, were sent as Shluchim to dis-tant and foreign cities and countries: Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, Argentina, Australia, and many more. Gradually the Chassidim began to realize that in front of their very eyes they were wit-nessing the formation of a new era, "Dor Hashvi’i', a direct continuation of the previous generation’s Avodah: Shli-chus! What is Shlichus? The definition was given by the Rebbe himself: Hafotzas HaTorah, Yiddishkeit and Chassidus to every possible location, thereby re-turning Yiddishe Neshamas to their roots. What is the purpose of Shlichus? The answer to this is found in the re-ply of Moshiach to the Baal Shem Tov’s question “Eimosai Kaosi Mar”, “When will the master (Moshiach) come”? To which Moshiach responded “Lichshey-afutzu Maayonosecha Chutza,” “When your wellsprings will spread outward.” Meaning, the spreading of the well-springs of Chassidus across the globe will bring about the Geulah and the coming of Moshiach. Despite this being the purpose of Shlichus throughout all the years, this goal wasn't felt so much in the Shluchim's activities. Naturally a lot of Mekuravim in the early years were not fully aware of the objec-tive of Shlichus. Their knowledge of Yiddishkeit did not contain a particu-lar emphasis on the upcoming Geulah. The fact that it was the final goal did not cause it to become part of the Shli-chus itself. And most important of all, the Shluchim did not feel that every ac-tivity on their part was part of a global campaign to bring Moshiach. With time, the Rebbe changed the style, and started saying more and more expressions about the Geulah and our obligation to bring it. After these Si-chos, the Shluchim were required to feel and have in mind that every one of their activities, is part of a long process which will eventually bring to the final goal, the Geulah. But even this did not bring about dra-matic changes in the Shlichus, rather the Shlichus and its manner remained the same, just like in 5710 (besides the many details which were added, the ten Mivtzoyim etc.) with a small addition of Kavana to bring the Geulah. That’s how things ran until the beginning of the 5750’s. * * * Once a year, a Kinus for all the Shluchim would take place. The official opening of the Kinus would be at the Rebbe’s Farbrengen on Shabbos. The Rebbe would elaborate about Shlichus and the different ways to go about it. These Sichos were so to say the “yearly mission” that the Rebbe gave to his Shluchim. Following the Kinus, the Shluchim would go back to their Shli-chus, faithfully carrying out the Reb-be’s latest instructions. The Kinus of 5752 began on 25 Cheshvan – Shabbos Mevarchim Kislev. Excitement filled the air in an-ticipation of the Sicha. Ever since the Sicha of 28 Nissan 5751, in which the Rebbe implored the Chasssidm to do whatever they can to bring Moshiach Bepoel, Chassidim were caught up in a storm of Geulah. Nevertheless, in re-gards to the Shluchim’s work, there was no real innovation even during this pe-riod. The Rebbe did instruct to take on new activities (such as learning Inyonei Moshiach U’Geula) however the gen-eral Shlichus remained the same. Half a year later, towards the end of Cheshvan 5752, Crown Heights filled with Shluchim. For many, it was their first visit since 28 Nissan, and they all wanted to get a clear picture of their mission at the current stage. They were not left disappointed. The Rebbe explained, that from time to time, a new Inyan is introduced into Avodas HaShlichus which permeates 10 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 11. and becomes the gateway for all other parts of Shlichus. In the recent past, the Rebbe continued, a new Inyan has been added and become the one Shli-chus which must permeate and elevate all other facets of Shlichus: “To be Me-kabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu BiG-eulah Hoamitis VeHashleimah”. The Rebbe went on to explain the reason for the recent Chiddush in Shlichus: “Being that the Friediker Rebbe, the only Shliach in our genera-tion, the only Moshiach in our genera-tion proclaimed that we have already completed all Avodah needed to bring Moshiach, it’s understood that the Shli-chus of the Friediker Rebbe has begun and therefore the only thing left in our Avodas HaShlichus is to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu, so that he will be able to carry out his Shlichus and take all Yidden out of Golus.” At the end of the Sicha, the Rebbe outlined in very clear terms the prac-tical Hachalotos which must be taken at this year’s Kinus: First of all – all Shluchim must be notified that the Avodas HaShlichus of our times is to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu. In practical terms this means that all details of Hafotzas HaTorah, Yiddish-keit and Hafotzas HaMaayonos Chutza must be permeated with this Nekuda: How this action leads to the Inyan of Kabolas Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu. This Kinus must bring every Shliach to PARTS FROM SICHAS SHABBOS PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH 5752 prepare himself and all the Yidden is his area to be Mekabel Pnei Moshiach.   • 12. smart.” The Chassidim realized what they have to do. Slowly but surely the Chassidim realized that the Sicha of Shabbos Chaye Soroh 5752 changed, or more accurately put, innovated, Avodas Hashlichus. From now on Moshiach is the topic of discussion. Geulah and Moshiach are what must be explained to every Yid in his area and city, and Moshiach must permeate every single detail of the Shlichus. Word of the special Sicha spread like wildfire amongst the Chassidim. The “Reishis Devorim” (short summa-ry) of the sicha was sent out to every Chabad community, and by the end of the week, the Sicha was checked over and edited by the Rebbe and printed in the Kfar Chabad Magazine and in the Algemeiner Journal. At once began an unprecedented im-petus to the activities of the Shluchim in Inyonei Moshiach U’Geulah. The fervor of the Chassidim which had been building up ever since the Sicha of 28 Nissan now found expression in organized activities. The focus of the Shluchim was now on one thing: “Di Eintzike Zach: Geulah.” In addition to the activities of the Shluchim, Anash too didn’t just sit idly by with their hands folded. Under-standably, “The International Cam-paign to bring Moshiach” which was established immediately following the Sicha of 28 Nissan, received a major impetus: No longer was their work another important thing. It was now the only thing which is left to do! Amongst many other activities, Reb Shmuel Butman initiated a spe-cial advertisement campaign under the title: “Hinei Zeh Moshiach Boh” – “Moshiach is on his way”. When he passed by the Rebbe at dollars, he showed the advertisement sign to the Rebbe, and explained that it would be publicized to the entire world. The Rebbe answered: Yashar Koach Godol! The Shluchim Office (under Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch) lent a helping hand as well to the efforts to bring Moshiach. A special document with information about Moshiach was sent to every Shliach. A phone conference was organized with the best speakers from amongst the Shluchim. Under-standably, the topic up for discussion was: What is the best way to introduce the concept of Moshiach to the masses. Many Shluchim took the initiative and came up with original ideas to spread Besurash HaGeulah. In Mol-dova, the new Shliach Reb Zalman Abelsky arranged for big signs with the words “Prepare for the coming of Moshiach” in Hebrew and Russian to be hung all around the city. The same was done by Reb Mendel Pevsner, the new Shliach to Peterburg. Even in Russia, which had just awoken from 70 years under communist rule, the Yidden were given to understand that soon there will be a solution for all their problems – Moshiach! Even in far-off Bangkok, the Israelis at the new-ly- founded Chabad House were given a clear message about Moshiach who will soon redeem even those lost and exiled in far-off lands. And understandably the message spread farther and farther. The up-coming Yom Tov of Chanukah was a great opportunity for the Shluchim to spread the message of redemption to the public. The large public Menorahs, which – every year – served as a sym-bol of the fact that Yiddishkeit is alive and well, were used that year to spread the message: ‘Moshiach is on the way – let's get ready'. In addition to publicizing the mes-sage, the Shluchim also placed em-phasis on explaining the concept of Moshiach and Geulah to the Yidden of their cities and beyond. In Geneva, Reb Mendel Pevzner arranged a Yom Iyun (day of learning) in Inyonei Moshiach U’Geulah for the Yidden of the city. In Sydney, Reb Pinchas Feldman arranged 12 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 13. a special symposium dealing with is-sues of Moshiach and Geulah. On a global scale, Reb Yonah Avt-zon of Sichos in English produced tapes of Shiurim on Inyonei Geulah U’Moshiach and later brought a set to the Rebbe. Giant ads were placed in the newspapers, and the reader was told "to reach his own conclusion": The world is ready for change, Geulah is at our doorstep. Reb Itche Springer add-ed a practical side to the ads and called on the readers to add in acts of Torah and Mitzvos to bring Moshiach closer. In addition to all of the above, within a few months, many new books were released discussing topics of Moshiach and Geulah. To name a few: (1) “I await his coming every day,” which essential-ly is a translation of the Sichos in the Dvar Malchus that the Rebbe gave out on 15 Iyar 5751. (2) “Mashiach,” a fas-cinating essay written by Reb Emman-uel Shochet which briefly summarizes the personality and work of Melech HaMoshiach and the practical implica-tions for our times. (3) “Highlights of Moshiach”, a Kuntres written by Reb Avrohom Stone, discussing basic con-cepts in Inyonei Moshiach and Geulah such as “The Moshiach in every gener-ation,” “The spark of Moshiach in every person” in easy language. (4) “Lets Get Ready – Moshiach through Children’s Eyes,” written by Malka Touger, which presents Yemos Hamoshiach as they are perceived by children, and makes the future world more accessible to the child. (5) “Sound the Great Shofar,” an English rendering of the Sichos from the years 5751-2, presenting the ideas contained therein in an intellectual form, while adhering to the Chasidic sources. The book (which was later translated and published in Hebrew) was the first attempt of its kind to in-troduce the Sichos of the Dvar Mal-chus (from the years 5751-2) in a clear concise form and as a practical guide for our times. * * * Tzeiri Agudas Chabad (Tzach) is the first organization that the Rebbe founded in Eretz Yisroel. Throughout the years, they were the Rebbe's arm and brought the Rebbe’s Inyonim and instructions to all the residents of Eretz Yisroel. As soon as news of the Sicha reached Eretz Yisroel, Tzach called a staff meet-ing. It was clear to all that after such a clear definition of the task at hand, the order of the day is bringing the mes-sage of Geulah to all. A new campaign was launched. In essence it came as a continuation to two modest signboards that were Kislev 5774 | 13
  • 14. hung a few months earlier in Tel Aviv, which read “ היכונו לביאת המשיח ” “Prepare for the coming of Moshiach". Sign-boards of this kind hung in the streets of cities, on buses, in newspapers, as stickers on cars and street poles, as well as on television and radio. "Instead of talking about the elections," said Reb Menachem Mendel Halevi Brod, a member of Tzach and the brains be-hind the campaign, "They will discuss Moshiach." And so it was. Public con-sciousness was focused on one issue, which until then seemed outdated, and suddenly became the focal point: The imminent coming of Moshiach. And the method was simple. Chassi-dei Chabad were scattered everywhere, and have some measure of control on the public’s consciousness. And if the Rebbe placed on them a special Shli-chus, to bring Inyonei Moshiach to the public, it was only natural that this be-came the hot topic on the agenda. All of Anash enlisted in these activi-ties, each in accordance with his skills. During Bein Hazmanim (vacation) Yeshiva Bochrim from Yeshivas Toras Emes in Yerusholayim joined the effort by attaching stickers and signboards about Moshiach to all Egged buses in the city. The same took place in Be'er Sheva and many other cities. Another area in which Moshiach was introduced during this time was in the Chinuch of children. In the Sicha of Simchas Torah 5752 the Rebbe said “When one looks at a Jew-ish child, one should see Moshiach.” In accordance with this directive, Reb Naftoli Rot, director of a chil-dren’s organization in Yerusholayim, arranged a Mivtza (learning cam-paign) of learning Inyonei Geulah U’Moshiach. The Mivtza, which was called ” ילדים בנתיב הגאולה ” “Children on the path of redemption,” consisted of a structured curriculum on topics of the Geulah and its centrality in Yid-dishkeit. The course was studied in many Lubavitcher schools, as well as many non-Lubavitch schools. All in all, tens of thousands of children partici-pated in the study of Inyonei Geulah U’Moshiach. The schools in Crown Heights im-mediately placed the study of Geulah U’Moshiach as a subject in the cur-riculum. Reb Moshe Slonim posted a sign in the Lubavitch Cheder in Mor-ristown clarifying to the children the call of the hour: To contemplate seri-ously about the imminent coming of Moshiach. The above mentioned activities are just a drop in the bucket of the many Peulos that were done by Shluchim, Bochurim and Anash as a natural reac-tion to the Rebbe’s call to be “Mekabel Pnei Moshiach Tzidkeinu.” They also reflect the atmosphere at that time: We must do something to fulfill the Shli-chus which has been placed upon us. Afternote: As of the Kinus Hashluchim 5774 we have not yet heard from the Rebbe any updates per-taining to the shlichus demanded of us. Thus, this remains the only Shlichus and we must do everything in our pow-er to bring it to fruition .במהרה בימינו ממש 14 | Moshiach Weekly

THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE MOSHIACH IS ON THE WAY On Thursday night, Beis Adar 1 5752, Crown Heights residents were shocked by the cruel mur-der of Mrs. Pesya Leah Lapine who gave up her life Al Kiddush Hashem. That Erev Shabbos thousands gathered outside 770 for the Levayah. At around two o’clock the Aron arrived. Soon after, the Rebbe appeared with a serious look on his holy face. Following closely behind the Aron, he led the procession onto Kingston Avenue until reaching the huge “Moshiach is on the way” sign (corner of Kingston & Union). The Rebbe stood there for ten minutes, all the while watching the people continue down to the house of the Nifteress, and dur-ing that time looked up at the sign which was hanging above.   • 16. On Simcha Torah 5754, during the break between Shachris and Hakofos, a group of Anash who donated generously to The Building Fund of Beis Rabeinu SheBeBovel” passed by the Rebbe. Among them was Reb Meir Schreiber of Crown Heights, he showed the the Rebbe a picture of Kos Shel Brocho 5748, in which the Rebbe is seen being me’oided strongly with both of his holy hands and asked “in the name of all Chassidim, will we merit to see such Giluyim once more?” The Rebbe nodded his holy head. This answer didn’t satisfy him. A a few weeks later he sent in to the Rebbe a detailed letter to affirm that the Rebbe meant that the Chassidim would actually see the Rebbe as before. Cheshvan 5754. Kevod Kedushas Admur Shlita: After I passed before the Rebbe on Simchas To-rah, I was uncertain what the Rebbe meant. I want to clarify the following: Out of their great love to the Rebbe, the Chassidim are feeling very down from the great suffering that the Rebbe is enduring. If there was some light at the end of the tunnel, without any doubt it would help us significantly. Will we merit to see the Rebbe as in the enclosed picture? With the same physical strength and more? We ask for the Rebbe’s brocho that this should be very soon! When the letter was shown to the Rebbe, the Reb-be nodded in affirmation. When the secretary added: שיהיה ביתר שאת וביתר עז ובבריאות שלימה וחזקה , the Rebbe again answered affirmatively. 16 | Moshiach Weekly

  • 19. rom the day I went to Ched-er, and even prior to that, I began picturing in my mind images of the Geulah. The Rebbe’s koch in Moshiach F "The wave started already as a little child, and only intensified as time went on. From the Rebbe’s first Ma’amer of Bosi Ligani in 5711, to the Mivtzoim campaigns starting in the late 5720’s, and the com-pletion of the ‘Moshiach Sefer Torah’ in 5730, the Rebbe constantly imbued in us Chassidim the belief in, and antici-pation for, the complete and final Geu-lah, and that it will be occurring in our generation. In the early 5740’s however, the in-tensity was ratcheted up a notch. Be-ginning with the establishment of Tzi-vos Hashem in 5741, regarding which the Rebbe explained that every child is a soldier in Hashem’s army working to bring Moshiach. The newly-founded organization’s slogan was “We Want Moshiach Now,” as the Rebbe stressed that we must demand Moshiach in English so that everyone can under-stand and join in the cry. These were years brimming with signs that Moshiach’s arrival is ever imminent. The following article will attempt to give a general overview of some of the special Sichos, events and anecdotes that transpired in the years 5742-5754. תשמ"ב – תהא שנת ביאת משיח The wave of Moshiach that hit in the year 5741 with the opening of Tzivos Hashem, whose slogan is "We want Moshiach now," swept into the year 5742. It was the first time the Rebbe re-vealed the roshei teivos of a year. The Rebbe spoke of the roshei teivos for the first time at the Far-brengen of the 2nd day of Shavuos: "As it is known, in the letters תשמ"ב are hinted the roshei teivos of many good things, they even hint at ''tehei shnas bias moshiach''!... V’yehi rotzon that very soon we'll merit the fulfill-ment of the yi'ud ''Tehei Shnas bias Moshiach, namely, that we will leave this Golus and go greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu.'' The ''Shalsheles Hayachas” sums up the year as follows: ''Calls for the true and eternal unity of all Yidden by them buying letters in a general Sefer Torah written in their merit, each according to his custom (Ashkenaz, Sefard, Teiman, Arizal etc). instructs the Hanholos of Tomchei Temimim and Beis Rivkah, respec-tively, to immediately begin writing a Sefer Torah in the merit of their stu-dents, benefactors and families. Notes that this mitzvah is mentioned at the end of the 613 mitzvos and some con-nect it with the end of Golus. Calls for an extraordinary effort in Hafotzas Hama'ayonos Chutzoh and Mivtza Chanukah. Notes that in various Se-forim 5742 is a “keitz.” Look and see what people say: it's the roshei teivos of 'tehei Shnas bias Moshiach.'' תשמ"ג – תהא שנת גילוי משיח At the beginning of the year the Rebbe called for every Yid to spread the idea of the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei No-ach among all the nations of the world. This, in accordance with the P'sak of the Rambam that ''Moshe command-ed in the name of Hashem to force all mankind to accept the mitzvos that Bnei Noach were commanded.” The Rebbe explained that it doesn't mean to force them literally, but rather with the proper explanation that these seven laws are the basis for the continuity of a healthy and just humanity and allow for different cultures to coincide to-gether, in unity, around the belief in the creator of the world. As proof of this, the Rebbe referenced the announcement of President Ronald Reagan calling on all citizens to unite behind the Seven Noahide Laws as well as the declaration of the US Senate and Congress, that they be upheld. The Rebbe concluded: “the very fact that the president of the United States came out with an open declaration to fulfill the Sheva Mitzvos, this itself should in-vigorate of Moshiach that hit in the year 5741 with the opening of Tzivos Hashem, whose slogan is "We want Moshiach now," swept into the year 5742" the Yidden in their efforts to affect the nations of the world.'' These actions bore fruit with mil-lions of gentiles taking part in various campaigns, taking upon themselves to fulfill the Sheva Mitzvos and prepare the world for ''a time when there will be no wars, hunger, jealousy or strife” – the time of the Geulah. Yet another link in the chain of events set into motion by Melech HaMoshiach to prepare the world for the Geulah. During that year the Rebbe called on all educational institutions to institute – ”A moment of silence” – 60 seconds of thought about the creator of the uni-verse. The Rebbe explained: Over the past 50 years American youth descended into moral decay. The only plausible explanation for this phenomenon is the lack of recognition of a creator. For without belief in ''an eye that sees Kislev 5774 | 19
  • 20. and an ear that hears,'' so long as he be-lieves he won't get caught, he'll do ab-solutely anything. And even if he does get caught, there’s nothing an easy bribe can’t accomplish. It is therefore crucial that in every kindergarten, school, high school and university, there be, at the start of each day, a moment of silence – 60 seconds to think about G-D. In light of this the then president, Ron-ald Reagan, called on all schools to begin each day with a moment of silence. The Rebbe praised this step and encouraged the members of the Senate and Con-gress to follow suit. Throughout the sub-sequent years ‘Moment of silence’ laws were enacted in many states. The moment of silence causes one to contemplate ''Am I really fulfilling my purpose on this world? Who is the master of this world? What am I doing to serve His needs?” It thus prepares the world for the coming of Moshiach by also preparing the gentiles for his com-ing. That year’s roshei teivos “ תהי' שנת גאולת משיח ” and “ תהי' שנת גילוי משיח ” were first revealed by the Rebbe on Erev Rosh Ha-shana of that year. An excerpt from Zalmon Jaffe’s “My Encounter with the Rebbe – Vol. 14” documenting a conversation he had with the Rebbe shortly after Simchas Torah 5743: The Rebbe wanted to know whether I had spoken at the Kinus Hatorah. I had to answer in the negative. I explained that illustrious Rabbonim were address-ing the assembly and I was waiting to be called. The Rebbe commented "Since when have you been a 'nebechel' (I can-not find an English translation of this word…) and not been able to push your-self forward to speak." I maintained that I could not interrupt such distinguished Rabbonim. The Rebbe declared that "You cannot wait until next Simchas Torah to speak at the Kinus Hatorah. He will have to make a Hemshech (addition) and you can continue this afternoon". I enquired from the Rebbe "What shall I speak about? Shall I talk about our new Manchester Lubavitch Yeshiva?" The Rebbe remarked "I don't care what! As long as you speak about Moshiach". תשד"מ – תהא שנת דברי משיח 5744 is the year best known for the takana of learning the daily portion of Rambam, with the first cycle beginning shortly after Pesach of that year. One of the reasons the Rebbe gave for choosing specifically the Rambam’s Yad Hachazaka was the fact that he was the sole codifier who included in his work the laws pertaining to the times of Moshiach, including the laws of the Korbanos – for which we must already now acclimate ourselves to – as well as what will take place before the coming of Moshiach and how he will be revealed. תשמ"ה – הי' תהא שנת מלך המשיח At the beginning of the year a certain individual spoke out against the topic of Moshiach. He claimed that yidden are presently in golus and that’s their place, so one shouldn’t have anything to do with Moshiach. Throughout the next winter, the Rebbe spoke at great length: how is it possible for a yid with a yar-mulke and tzitzis to speak out against such fundamentals of the torah?! The only plausible explanation is אשר חרפו עקבות משיחך for "they have disgraced the footsteps of Your Moshiach." Later on in the year, when claims were made against the Rebbe’s nesius, that a Rebbe is a private individual and all his possessions are inherited by his relatives and not by the chassidim. The Rebbe ne-gated these claims by explaining that a Rebbe is the נשיא הדור and .הנשיא הוא הכל Meaning that a Rebbe is a general per-son who belongs to the chassidim and therefore all his possessions belong to the Chassidim. During the year, in one of the rally’s in 770, Rabbi Goldstein said that ev-ery Tuesday night, there was a Tzivos Hashem program on the radio (there are one hundred thousand members in the U.S.A. alone). There was a contest, a competition about the Coming of Moshiach. We recite three times every weekday, in the amida, in Hebrew of course, “Sound the great Shofar for our freedom, raise a banner to gather our ex-iles, and bring us together from the four corners of the earth into our Land…….” The competition was to bring out this concept in the most original way. A young lad won the competition by producing the longest shofar in ex-istence. It was drawn on sheets upon sheets of paper, all joined together. The end product was a paper shofar which stretched over half the length of the room. Before this year too, on leil erev rosh hashonoh, the Rebbe announced the What shall I speak about? Shall I talk about our new Manchester Lubavitch Yeshiva?" The Rebbe remarked "I don't care what! As long as you speak about Moshiach" 20 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 21. roshei teivos of the forthcoming year. Something unique here was that the Rebbe also gave a word for the “hei”. ה'תשמ״ה: ה״א הידיעה – השנה. ת' ־ תהא. ש' – שנת. מ' ־ מלך. ה' – המשיח תשמ"ו The year started with a big shturem, From Tishrei on, the Rebbe spoke at length about the need of each and one of us to await the coming of Moshiach. On numerous occasions during this period, the Rebbe mentioned the famous vort of the chida which explains the loshon of the tefila "ki liyshuscho kivinu kol hay-om" that the yearning itsef for Moshiach is a good enough reason for Hashem to take us out of Golus. On the night of Simchas Torah before hakofos the Rebbe spoke strongly about the need for Moshiach to come. The Rebbe mentioned that he won't mind if we will explain that the meaning of nosi doreinu is Moshiach Tzidkeinu, as long as he comes already! During the course of the year, there was mention of Moshiach by various farbrengens: At the end of the farbrengen of 7 Cheshvon, the Rebbe brought out a Ho-raoh from the daily study of Rambam – that a Yid must demand from Hashem to bring the Geulah. After quoting from two important sources the importance of demanding the Geulah, the Rebbe re-lated a very interesting story: One of the letters I received lately was from a certain woman who was in dis-tress and felt quite scared. She wrote that she had received a letter from someone, and at the end of the letter, the sender instructed her to copy the letter and for-ward it to ten additional people. If she complies, she will be rewarded, and if not she will feel quite sorry... The letter itself was full of nonsense, and the sender did not sign his name, so she doesn't even know where it's coming from. Now she is asking me if she should be intimidated by the threats that the letter carries, and follow the instructions by forwarding the ten copies or not. I obviously answered her that she should tear the letter up and dispose of it, and forget the entire story! Later on I thought to myself, why is it that this was brought to my attention? I don't know this woman from anywhere and she does not know me either. She only heard about my name and therefore sent the letter to ask my advice. So why would this ever have been brought to me in the first place? Until I understood: that it’s in order to utilize this method for good and holy things. Now that we have learned about this "chain-letter" method of sending out a letter and instructing the receiver to forward it on, it would be a good idea that each person should compose a let-ter quoting these two sources about the importance of demanding the Geula, and instruct the recipient to forward it on to ten more people. Obviously, all the threats must be omitted and replaced only with blessings! Now, the people who we call "Shpitz Chabad" may think that it's time to stop everything they are doing and just sit writing letters all day. Let me therefore make it clear: each one should only write ten letters and no more! If you have free time on your hands afterwards, sit and learn Torah instead! By the farbrengen of Lag B’omer, there was a great shturem in Moshiach, as Reb Zalmon Jaffe relates in his “Encounters”: At a recent farbrengen – on Lag B'Omer, which was relayed – broad-cast – to the whole world, they started to sing, "We Want Moshiach Now", and for one and a half hours – NON STOP – they sang this one tune. For the first half-an-hour, the Rebbe said LeChaim to all those present – as he usually does, but for the whole dura-tion of the last hour, the Rebbe sat mo-tionless, just staring out – and staring at those who were singing as if to discover whether they really meant what they were singing – and if they were singing with sincerity and kavonna (concentra-tion). Everyone tried to outdo their neigh-bor. In Manchester, at the yeshiva, the boys went wild with delirium. They opened up all of the windows – at 4.00 a.m after midnight – and sang loudly and gustily. I complained that they would wake up all the neighbors. One of the bochurim retorted – "Let them all know that Moshiach is coming NOW!" That farbrengen lasted four hours with two hours of singing, which was most unusual. For this year 5746, the Rebbe, for rea-sons unknown to us, did not announce a roshei teivos. תשמ״ז – תהא זו שנת משיח On Hei Teves the good news of the court victory that the Rebbe and the se-forim belong to the chassidim came to 770 and caused great rejoicing for the next seven days. In the midst of these seven jubilant days, on Asoroh B’Teves, a group of Rabbonim presented a specia p’sak to the Rebbe by the doorway to his room. The p’sak said, that all the kitzim have al-ready passed, yidden have been in Golus They started to sing, "We Want Moshiach Now", and for one and a half hours – NON STOP – they sang this one tune.   • 22. long enough, and Moshiach has to come and redeem them NOW! Throughout the rest of the year the Rebbe, with great passion, began to speak about founding Chabad Houses in every corner of the world, to bring the light of Chassidus and Yiddishkeit to every Jew wherever he may be and thus prepare the whole world for the revela-tion of Moshiach! For this year, the Rebbe set the roshei teivos as “Tehei Zu Shnas Moshiach” and explained that The Year of Moshiach should be in a manner of “Tehei” – which means literally, “The Year of Moshiach” and “Zu” – in a revealed manner. תשמ״ח – חירות (ע״י) משיח The year began with a big shturem concerning Simcha. The main reason for all this was the fact that it was the year of Hakhel. When the Beis Hamikdosh stood, all the yidden would gather in the azoroh on Chol Hamoed Sukkos to lis-ten to the king reading special portions of the torah and thus fulfill the mitzvah of Hakhel – unity of all yidden. The Rebbe explained that nowadays we must also fulfill this Mitzvah by orga-nizing Hakhel gatherings, to unify yid-den, not only on Chol Hamoed Sukkos as was done then, rather at every oppor-tunity throughout the year we should conduct such gatherings to unify yid-den. All this is connected with simcha, for simcha adds so much to unity and both these things together bring about the coming of Moshiach! At first, the Rebbe didn’t announce a roshei teivos for this year, rather the gen-eral message of the year itself – simcha. Later, as requests were received for ro-shei teivos, the Rebbe related to this in a sicha and announced the roshei teivos. The main “koch” in the roshei teivos started primarily this year, in which the Rebbe explained the roshei teivos at length and mentioned them profusely in sichos throughout the year. The Rebbe explained the roshei teivos as follows: “This year emphasizes Tismach – re-joice, a directive and assurance for every yid, to be happy. Since in the previous years it has become the norm to con-nect the roshei teivos of the year with Moshiach, the same should be done this year. However, there are those who don’t like to expend too much effort, therefore they try to get other people to do all the work for them, despite the fact that this in particular is not such a hard thing to do.” The Rebbe smiled and continued: How do I know this? For they asked me this question! Why, I asked, what’s the need to find roshei teivos, when the whole year sig-nifies something – “Tismach”. They an-swered “we need Moshiach”. To this I didn’t have any answer, for I too, want and shturem about Moshiach. “Tismach”– Simcha could be for many reasons, a bris, pidyon haben and even a chasunah – simcha beyond limita-tions, but above all a connection with Moshiach must be found. So, I didn’t spare any effort until I found a connection between the letter “Ches” and Moshiach. It says in gemoroh “the harp of the Beis Hamikdosh had seven string . . and that of Moshiach will have eight”. Thus, we see that Moshiach is connected with the number eight (“Ches”). תשמ״ט – "שנת משיח טובה״ Along with the impression left from the previous year, a year infused with joy and Hakhel gatherings in every pos-sible place, and together with the end-less “koch” in setting up more and more Chabad Houses, the Rebbe came out with the call of “Shnas Habinyon”, one cannot be content with his current mod-est Chabad House, one must expand! Chabad is not content with itself as it is, Moshiach doesn’t look for the mini-mum – he demands maximum effort! Whatever is able to be done, must be done. Chabad houses provide the vital dose of yiddishkeit and chassidishkeit to each and every yid and therefore must be expanded. It’s up to every Yid to pre-pare the world for the complete redemp-tion. The world needs to be prepared, and the despite the accomplishments that were already achieved, we still need to do our part to the maximum in order for it to really be a place worthy of the rev-elation of Elokus. תש"נ – תהא שנת ניסים In addition to the shturem surround-ing the fact that it was the 40th year of the Rebbe’s nesius – something the Reb-be began to speak about already in 5749 – the Rebbe reiterated many times that the year’s acronym stood for t’hei shnas nisim (may it be a year of wonders), es-pecially the greatest wonder of them all, the coming of Moshiach. 5750 was the year the Gulf War com-menced, a war in which the Rebbe saw the fulfillment of the words of the Yalkut Shimoni: “Reb Yitzchok said: the year in Why I asked, what’s the need to find roshei teivos, when the whole year signifies something – “Tismach”. They answered “we need Moshiach” 22 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 23. which Melech HaMoshiach will be re-vealed, all the nations of the world will provoke one another. The king of Persia will provoke the king of Arabia. The king of Arabia will go to the King of Edom to seek counsel . . all the nations will be in turmoil . . the Jews too will be in turmoil saying ‘To where shall we go? To where shall we go?’ Then, Hashem will say to them, ‘Children, do not fear, for all that I have done, I have done for you. Humble ones, the time of your redemption has arrived.” The Yalkut continues: “The year in which Moshiach will come, he will stand on the roof of the Beis Hamikdosh and say: Humble ones, the time of your redemption has arrived.” The significance of the year manifest-ed itself in several new customs: That year the Rebbe began wearing a silk kapota all year-round. There were those who conjectured that this was be-cause it was right before the Geulah so the Rebbe donned Shabbos clothing. The Rebbe began farbrenging every Shabbos. Despite doing so the previ-ous year as well, it was that year that the Rebbe clearly spoke about it at the Rosh Hashana Farbrengen, a Farbrengen that fell out on Shabbos – the first time the Rebbe farbrenged on a Shabbos of Rosh Hashana. The Rebbe began proclaiming ‘The time of your redemption has arrived,’ something which only picked up pace in the coming years. The story surrounding the Rebbe giv-ing 5750 its acronymic slogan went as follows: The Yeshiva in Brunoy, France, would release a yearly calendar for its support-ers embellished with the year’s acro-nym’s slogan (dating back to even before the Rebbe officially began naming the years). Towards the end of 5749, one of the members of the Yeshiva’s Hanhala submitted a question to the Rebbe ask-ing about the coming year’s acronym. That Erev Shabbos he was approached by one of the mazkirim and was told that the Rebbe would answer him on Shabbos. This left him bewildered. But indeed, during that Shabbos Farbren-gen (Bamidbar 5749) the Rebbe said the following: “As has been customary in recent year to give a roshei teivos to the years, in order to add in Yiras Shomay-im, so the coming year’s slogan is ‘May it be a Year of Wonders’ ( תהי' שנת נסים ) as Moshiach will be here yet this year and thus the coming year will already be a year of wonders.” Similar words were also spoken at the Farbrengen of Yud Beis Tamuz 5749. ה'תנש"א – הי' תהא שנת אראנו נפלאות While 5750 was the ‘Year of Wonders,’ 5751 was the year Hashem will ‘Show us wonders’ ( אראנו נפלאות ), said the Rebbe. With the conclusion of the Gulf War on Purim of that year, the Rebbe em-phasized that Hashem has shown open miracles. Miracles comparable to, and even greater than, the miracle of Purim. Miracles that are a prelude to the com-ing of Moshiach. Shortly after Pesach, on Chof Ches Nissan, the Rebbe spoke the timeless Si-cha in which he gave the job of bringing Moshiach over to the Chassidim. The Rebbe demanded that we give it our all to bring about Moshiach’s coming, and that everything we do must be to further that goal. The Rebbe first revealed the slogan of that year to Rabbi Leibel Raskin in con-nection to a calander being printed by Chabad of Moroco. On Shabbos Parshas Emor 5750 the Rebbe openly stated it at the weekly Farbrengen. At the Farbrengen of Shabbos Parshas Balak 5750 the Rebbe said that the mir-acles of the year 5751 will surpass even those of the year 5750. תשנ"ב – הי' תהא שנת נפלאות בכל The Rebbe’s talk of Moshiach sig-nificantly increased in the year 5752. On the Shabbos of that year’s Kinus Hashluchim the Rebbe proclaimed that all that remains to be done is to greet That year the Rebbe began wearing a silk kapota all year-round. There were those who conjectured that this was because it was right before the Geulah so the Rebbe donned Shabbos clothing. Moshiach and all other work should be done in that vein. The belief in the coming of Moshiach was so real that Kehos put out a notice that there will be a 40% sale “until the coming of Moshiach”! The Emunah in the Rebbe as Moshiach also began gaining traction due to nu-merous responses Chassidim received from the Rebbe – beginning already in 5751 – to that effect. Those responses were also accompanied by countless mentions in sichos about the Nosi Hador being the Moshiach. Just as with 5751, the slogan of the year 5752 was once again first revealed to Rabbi Leibel Raskin in connection to the printing of a calendar by Chabad of Moroco – “t’hei shnas niflaos bakol”. Throughout the year the Rebbe would mention several other roshei teivos for Kislev 5774 | 23
  • 24. the year including niflaos bina, niflaos ba and niflaos b’eineinu. תשנ"ג – תהא שנת נפלאות גדולות After 27 Adar 5752, the connection between Chassidim and the Rebbe took on an unprecedented state – a state of suffering and העלם והסתר . After 7 months of Chassidim not seeing the Rebbe, the Rebbe finally came out on Rosh Ha-shana 5753. Chassidim were able to see the Rebbe, albeit only through a tinted window. Meanwhile, Chassidim continued to add in their activities to bring Moshiach, now motivated by a passionate cry of Ad Mosai – we want to see our Rebbe! After Yom Kippur of that year a bal-cony was built alongside the tinted win-dow. Beginning then, the Rebbe would come out, often even two or three times a day, strongly encouraging the singing of Yechi, like a father who loves his chil-dren, giving them all he can. Chassidim believed that it would be from this very place, where the Rebbe will be nisgaleh any moment. Every time the Rebbe came out, this feeling was apparent amongst the Chassidim in 770. The slogan of that year, t’hei shnas ni-flaos g’dolos, was chosen by the Rebbe from amongst many other submissions presented to the Rebbe by the mazkir Reb Leibel Groner. תשנ"ד – תהא שנת נפלאות דגולות The slogan of the year 5754 was select-ed by the Rebbe in Sivan 5753, in con-nection with Chabad of Morocco’s cal-endar. At first the Rebbe turned down all the submissions (amongst them were divrei nifloysecha, didan notzach, niflaos dibur, etc.). It was only a few weeks later, when niflaos degulos (Emi-nent Wonders) was proposed, that the Rebbe noded his head in affirmation. The last time the Chassidim merited seeing the Rebbe, l’eis ata, was on 14 Cheshvon 5754, and a part of Shluchim on Rosh Chodesh Kislev 5754. Today, when we raise our eyes to the balcony on which the Rebbe appeared, and we have not yet merited the hisga-lus, we cry out in anguish "Ad Mosai"?! How can it be that 20 years have passed v’adayin lo bo?! One can never forget the energy the Rebbe imbued in us Chas-sidim from this very place, and what Chassidim have consequently done to hasten the Rebbe’s hisgalus. Now, 20 years later, we must make a firm com-mitment to dedicate every second of our lives to do all we can to bring Moshiach now! The belief in the coming of Moshiach was so real that Kehos put out a notice that there will be a 40% sale “until the coming of Moshiach”! 24 | Moshiach Weekly

After the Sicha of Chof Ches Nissan 5751, in which the Rebbe made a tremendous Shturem to do Peulos connected to Moshiach to hasten the Geulah, The representatives of Mivtza Kashrus of Nshei Chabad of Crown Heights (Mrs. Simp-son and Mrs. Gans-burg), notified the Rebbe of the Mivtzoim they organized in various malls in Brooklyn. Included was a picture of the exhibit they had set up in one of the malls. On the ex-hibit was written: LONGING for MOSHIACH WILL BRING HIM HERE TODAY!   • 26. R' Shneur Zalman was born to his distinguished parents, R' Nosson and Esther Gurary, in Kremenchug on the first night of Chanuka 5672 (1912). He learned with the chassid R' Yisroel Nevel-er, who was a private tutor for the Gurary family. At age 4, he had the privilege of seeing and being blessed by the Rebbe Rashab on Erev Yom Kippur 5677, in the resort town of Slaviansk. In the winter of 5680 the Gurary family had to flee Kremen-chug for fear of the approaching Bolsheviks. The entire area was extremely tense because of the battles between the various factions. In addition to this, famine, the freezing cold, and epidemics felled numerous people. Yeshivas Tomchei T'mimim, which had moved to Kremenchug only three years earlier, also breathed its last in this city before moving to Rostov. The roads were dangerous and the only means of transportation available to the Gurarys was a freight train. They headed east towards Rostov, where the Rebbe Rashab's household had moved four years earlier. In order to protect themselves from troops on the road, they hired soldiers to accompany them. Shneur Zalman, the youngest of the family, was nearly eight years old when he and his family moved to Rostov. Memories of their flight and the terrors of the trip to Rostov were engraved in his memory. R' Nosson had mesirus nefesh in educating his children. He sold diamonds belonging to his wife and paid a melamed with the money. This was during a famine, and the Melamed was able to sup-port his eight children comfortably while others went hungry. On Yud-Tes Kislev 5680, a few days after they arrived in Rostov, R' Zalman was present at the Rebbe Rashab's Farbrengen. The Rebbe sat not far from the door which connected the staloveh (the dining room) and the kabinet (the Rebbe's room). The room was full and R' Zalman didn't enter by way of the door which everybody used but from an inner hall of the house. Rebbetzin 26 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 27. The life and times of the Chossid Rabbi Zalman Gurary, a leading Chabad Rov and from its foremost askonim. A wholehearted Mekushar to the Rabbeim, never leaving their side. Chairman of the Vaad Hamenahalim of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim, a member of the executive board of Kehos and a member of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, and was at the vanguard of spread-ing Besuras Hageula Shterna Sarah, a"h, let him in from the hallway to the kabinet and from there to the staloveh. When R' Zalman walked in, he was very close to the Rebbe. He went over to his father who sat on the side of the Rebbe, and since the Rebbe was only wearing a yarmulke on his head, without a hat, he didn't recognize him at first and he asked, "Which one is the Rebbe?" Maybe the Rebbe heard the question, for he immediately asked him to say l'chaim (at the Rebbe Rashab's farbrengens, it was customary to say l'chaim only when the Rebbe asked for it, and this was considered a special kiruv). A few months after the Gurarys' arrival in Rostov, the Rebbe Rashab passed away. R' Zalman wasn't allowed to attend the funeral, but he remembered everything that took place before and after the funeral. On Motzaei Shabbos, a few hours before his passing, the Rebbe asked those around him, "Nemt mich in zal vellin mir zain in einem" (Take me to the zal (from the bedroom to the yechidus room) and we'll be together). When R' Zalman visited Rostov in his later years, he pointed out exactly where the Rebbe's bed was when he passed away. He said that on Shabbos morning, some Chassidim came to his parents' house in order to take a good bed for the Rebbe. One of the experiences he had with the Rebbe Rashab took place on one of the Shabbos'os after Pesach. That Shabbos, R' Zalman went to daven without his father, who didn't feel well. The Rebbe asked how his father was, and then, when he saw young Zalman walking around during Krias ha'Torah, he told him to take a Chumash and to stand near the table during the kria.   • 28. ON THE KNEES OF THE REBBE RAYATZ In 5681 (1921), R' Zalman's father passed away, and the Rebbe Rayatz took responsibility for raising him. His melamed was the Chossid R' Moshe Rosenblum, a secretary of both the Rebbe Rashab and the Rebbe Rayatz. The Rebbe Rayatz once told Rabbi Yaakov Landau to test R' Zalman. R' Yaakov tested him in the Rebbe's house, in the dining room, in a room which had a door that led to the Rebbe Rayatz's room. R' Yaakov walked around during the test and passed the door many times. R' Zalman didn't know that the Rebbe was sitting in his room and listening to the test. After the test the Rebbe said they should switch melamdim since this melamed only taught b'kius and not b'iyun (superficially and not in depth), and that R' Yechiel Kamisar should be his melamed. The Rebbe Rayatz showed a special fondness for R' Zalman, and one Simchas Torah during the farbrengen, the Rebbe put him on the lap of Zalman (the son of Folik) Gurary, who was himself a youth at the time. Zalman couldn't hold him that long, and the Rebbe took him and put him on his own lap. The Rebbe's plate had meat and tzimmes. The Rebbe took water and poured it into the tzimmes in his plate and then fed it to R' Zalman. R' Zalman didn't like it and the Rebbe said, "Es Un Brech, Vestu Blaiben A Chossid" (eat and throw up and you'll remain a Chossid). CONCERN FOR THE SMALLEST DETAILS In 5682-3 (1922-3), his sister Leah married R' Eliezer Karasik. The Rebbe Rayatz attended the Kabbalas Panim and R' Zalman accompanied the Rebbe Ray-atz. When they arrived at the hall, the Rebbe Rayatz said that our custom is not to eat at the Kabbalas Panim. Years later, R' Zalman said that he saw in the Rebbe's diary from the wedding of Rebbetzin Shaina that the Rebbe Rayatz said the same thing, but he qualified it and said that only the Mechutanim (relatives) don't eat. In 5682, R' Zalman attended the wedding of the Rebbe Rayatz's oldest daughter Chana with his cousin, R' Shemaryohu Gurary. R' Zalman was one of the few Chassidim who attended all three of the Rebbe Rayatz's daughter's weddings. When the Rebbe Rayatz left Rostov for Leningrad in 5684, the Gurarys followed. In Leningrad there was no melamed for R' Zalman and the Rebbe Rayatz sent him to Nevel, to the chassid R' Meir Simcha Chein. He sent a letter to R' Chein in which he asked him to secure a melamed for R' Zalman. R' Chein didn't find a private melamed in Nevel and he tried to get R' Zalman into Tomchei Temimim in Nevel. At first the hanhala didn't want to accept him since he was too young, but then the Rebbe sent his secretary, R' Chatshe Feigin, to make sure he was accepted. Until he entered the yeshiva, R' Chein learned with him. Among other things, they learned the introduction to Imrei Bina, a long complicated piece with deep Chassidic ideas. In 5685, the Gurarys moved to Poland and R' Zalman attended Tomchei Temimim in Warsaw. At that time he received letters from the Rebbe Rayatz in which the Rebbe guided him in what to learn, etc. Among other things, the Rebbe told him to study Derech Chaim of the Mitteler Rebbe. Out of concern for his Chinuch, the Rebbe dealt with the smallest details, and once even told him to learn dikduk (grammar) in order to improve his writing, and to improve his handwriting. In the summer of 5687 (1927), when he was fifteen, R' Zalman had appendicitis, and the doctors said he needed an operation. He told the doctors that he couldn't have the operation without his Rebbe's approval, and since the Rebbe was in jail at the time and he couldn't consult with him, R' Zalman told the doctors that he couldn't be operated on. They didn't operate and R' Zalman miraculously recovered without an operation. R' Zalman made great efforts to be with the Rebbe Rayatz in Riga for Rosh HaShana 5689. Despite the financial difficulties and the hardships entailed in obtaining travel permits, R' Zalman managed to be with the Rebbe for Tishrei. From that year until this one, R' Zalman spent every Rosh HaShana with the Rebbeim, except for Rosh HaShana 5690 (1930) when the Rebbe Ray-atz was in America, and Rosh HaShana 5700 (1940) when the Rebbe Rayatz was in bombed out Warsaw and R' Zalman was in Riga. In Kislev 5689 (1929), R' Zalman attended the wedding of the Rebbe and Reb-betzin Chaya Mushka. When the Rebbe Rayatz was about to 28 | Moshiach Weekly travel to Eretz Yisroel, the Rebbe left the
  • 29. city before Shiva-Asar B'Tammuz in order to begin his trip before the Three Weeks. R' Zalman joined the Rebbe on his trip outside the city. A SPECIAL SHLICHUS In 5691 (1931), the Rebbe Rayatz devised a plan to expand the network of Chabad Yeshivos. R' Zalman Gurary was picked for this special Shlichus. He traveled to check out the Yeshivos in various cities in Vohlin, to strengthen the learning of Chassidus in towns, and to establish new Yeshivos in appropriate places. Before leaving on this mission, the Rebbe called him to a yechidus and said, "When sending an emissary, the chochmas [i.e., the successes] are the Shliach's and the stupidities are associated with the one who sent him. Don't do anything foolish so that it won't be attributed to me. "And what is your shlichus? Your Shlichus is to make Chassidim. How do you make Chassidim? When the Shliach himself is a Chossid, then he can make Chassidim". In the course of this Shlichus, R' Gurary received detailed instructions in dozens of letters from the Rebbe (that were printed in the Rebbe Rayatz's Igros Kodesh, vol. 11, and more recently in vol. 16). R' Gurary sent dozens of letters to the Rebbe Rayatz in which he gave detailed reports of his work. Copies of these letters, which were kept in the Rebbe Rayatz's archives, were later returned to R' Gurary's possession. R' Gurary's Shlichus extended to other towns and continued into 5692. While on this Shlichus, R' Gurary gave many Shiurim in Nigleh and Chassidus, and he met with many Gedolei HoRabbonim and Roshei Yeshivos. After concluding this Shlichus, he returned to Warsaw where he served as Maggid Shiur in the younger level of Tomchei Temimim. At this time too, the personal relationship he had with the Rebbe was apparent, for the Rebbe Rayatz was personally responsible for his salary. MINISTER OF THE COURTYARD In 5692, R' Gurary attended the wedding of R' M.M. Horenstein and Rebbetzin Shaina (may Hashem avenge their blood). The wedding took place in the summer, yet it rained throughout the Badeken, and it was very dark. Years later, R' Gurary said that he noticed that the Rebbe Rayatz looked ex-tremely gloomy and he was very shaken. When he was in the town of Druzke-nik (a resort area) on the border of Poland and Lithuania, the Rebbe Rayatz stayed in a hotel and needed a Minyan. It was R' Gurary's job to find a Sefer Torah, however, in this particular town there was only a Torah which had the words " "פצוע דכא written with the letter Hei, which is not the Minhag Chabad. R' Gurary asked the Rebbe Rayatz, through Rashag, what to do, and he was told that our tradition has it that the Alter Rebbe once stayed in a city where there were only Sifrei Torahs in which פצוע דכא was written with a Hei, and he read from them or went up to the Torah when he was called for an Aliya. While there, R' Gurary took care of the Rebbe's household's needs, and had the privilege of the Rebbe Rayatz bestowing upon him the nickname, "Minister Devara" (Minister of the Courtyard). WITH THE REBBE RAYATZ IN WARSAW When the Rebbe Rayatz arrived in Warsaw, they had to find a bakery in order to bake Matzos. R' Gurary was one of the main people involved in this. At first they found a bakery in Otvotsk, but while Kashering the oven, a fire broke out and burnt the oven. Then they found a bakery in the nearby town of Parnitsh, but there were many rabbanim and Admurim in Parnitsh, and it was almost impossible to bake Matzos on Erev Pesach because there were many who wanted to do so. R' Gurary asked the Rebbe what to do, for we have the custom of baking Matzos on Erev Pesach after Chatzos (noon). The Reb-be said that they could bake before noon, and this is what they did. The Rebbe Rayatz asked R' Gurary to build a model of the Beis HaMikdosh out of wood. There was a Jew in Warsaw who had made a model of the Beis HaMikdash, exactly as the Gemara describes it, and the Rebbe wanted R' Gurary to do the same. Since he didn't want people to come to him with com-plaints that he hadn't made it properly, and since the cost would be high, and if he didn't make it precisely he thought the Rebbe would have complaints that he wasted mon-ey, he sought all sorts of excuses, say-ing he wasn't capable of doing it, etc. The Rebbe said, "I'm t e a c h i n g you Orach Chaim, and you're teaching me Choshen Mishpat..." (i.e., I'm guiding your spiritual life, and you respond with monetary considerations). The Rebbe Rayatz once traveled to visit his uncle, R' Moshe Horenstein. At the entrance stood an old Chossid by the name of Shimon Greenberg. The Rebbe told him to stay near the door, while he asked R' Gurary to join him on the trip. This was remarkable, the Rebbe taking R' Zalman who was a bachur, while the old Chossid was left near the door. The Rebbe explained that he was taking R' Zalman because he was afraid that if he left him near the door he would steal his manuscripts... When the Rebbe arrived in Otvotsk, R' Gurary was appointed as Gabbai responsible for allowing people in for yechidus. Most people lived in Warsaw and they would come in the evening in order to see the Rebbe for Yechidus. On the day the Rebbe arrived, they davened Mincha in the front room and didn't say Tachnun. The Rebbe asked R' Gu-rary why they hadn't said Tachnun, and R' Gurary answered that when the Rebbe came it's Yom Tov, and on Yom Tov you don't say Tachnun. The Rebbe responded: "I understand that when the Rebbe comes you don't sin, but that you don't say Tachnun when the Rebbe comes, that I don't understand." The Rebbe once took R' Gurary for Kiddush Levana so that he could say "Sholom Aleichem" to him. There were many trees in Otvotsk and the Rebbe looked for a place to be Mekadesh the Levana without standing under a tree. While walking, the Rebbe tripped over a wire fence and nearly fell. Afterwards, the Rebbe gave R' Gurary money to buy Mashke, so that the Chassidim could farbreng (about the miracle that had happened). While in Otvotsk for Pesach, there was not a large crowd for Pesach. Among the Kislev 5774 | 29
  • 30. guests were only the Rebbe's relatives, R' Gurary, his friend R' Meir Glazman, and Feivel Greener. Before the meal, the Rebbe Rayatz's grandson told everybody where to sit, as the Rebbe had instructed him, on the right or left, near or far. The guests were called "the Rebbetzin's guests." R' Gurary was embarrassed to eat in front of the Rebbe Rayatz and so he refrained from eating. Seeing this, the Rebbe told the story about R' Yekusiel Liepler, about the Tzemach Tzedek sending him Matzoh on Erev Pesach, which he ate before Bedikas Chometz because he thought the Tzemach Tzedek had sent the Matzoh in order to help him with his Avodas Hatefillah Barichus. The Rebbe Rayatz concluded the story by saying that from this we see that when the Rebbe gives, you take. THOUSANDS OF ANSWERS AND RESPONSES After the passing of the Rebbe Rayatz, R' Gurary became Mekushar to the Rebbe heart and soul. The fact that he had been very mekushar and close to the Rebbe Ray-atz, didn't affect his Hiskashrus to the Reb-be. It's impossible to write about the special connection R' Gurary had with the Rebbe in one article, not even in a series of articles. R' Gurary wrote to the Rebbe nearly every day about what he had done that day, and everything he did was with the Rebbe's Haskama and Bracha. The letters and responses he received from the Rebbe over the years number in the thousands! UTTER DEVOTION TO THE REBBE'S MOSDOS When the Rebbe first refused to accept the Chabad leadership, R' Gurary asked the Rebbe for a Yechidus. The Rebbe smiled and said: "What, you're also one of those?" R' Gurary said: "With Chaya and Yechida (the transcendent levels of the soul through which a Rebbe bonds with Chassidim), you don't play around." The Rebbe became serious and accepted him for Yechidus. At this time there was a special Vaad that worked on things having to do with the Ne-sius. R' Gurary was a member of this Vaad, and in his later years related that the Vaad was established at the initiative of the Rebbe, who called upon the members of the Vaad and appointed them to the task. R' Gurary devoted himself to getting the Rebbe to accept the Nesius in all matters. When he saw that the Rebbe was not allowing the chozrim into his room after the saying of a maamer, as all the previous Rebbeim did, he entered for a Yechidus and asked the Rebbe why they didn't do Chazara. The Rebbe explained that the previ-ous Rebbeim were precise in their word-ing and only the Mitteler Rebbe was not so exacting in the words but in the inyan. I too, said the Rebbe, am not precise in my words, so there's not much need for Chazara. R' Gurary's devotion to the Rebbe's Mosdos was limitless. He got many other wealthy people whom he knew from business to contribute to the Rebbe's Mosdos. He himself gave tens of millions to the Rebbe's Mosdos. He was a member of the Hanhala of Kehos, and thanks to him, this Mosad is one of the most illustri-ous mosdos of Chabad in recent decades. Out of hundreds of Sifrei Maamarim of the Rebbeim that were printed in the last fifty years. R' Gurary paid for most of them to be published. The Rebbe referred to this a few times, even at public farbrengens, saying what a great Zechus it was to pay to have Seforim printed. On Simchas Torah in one of the early years of the Rebbe's Nesius, R' Gurary said to the Rebbe that since Simchas Torah night is considered an auspicious time in Lubavitch (it was the time the Rebbe Rashab blessed all the Bochurim who needed an exemption from the Russian army), he was asking the Rebbe that he have the Zechus to have a Yechidus each year on Simchas Torah night and be blessed by the Rebbe. The Rebbe agreed on condition that R' Gurary keep it a secret so that others wouldn't be jealous. Every year, on Simchas Torah night, he would have a special Yechidus with the Rebbe. One Simchas Torah, R' Gurary had a terrible kidney attack. The doctor said he had to go to the hospital for an operation. R' Gurary's daughter, Mrs. Esther Sternberg, who was a little girl at the time, ran to the Rebbe's house to ask for a Beracha for her father. The Rebbetzin opened the door and when she heard what was going on she went upstairs to the Rebbe to ask for a beracha. The Rebbe said he should go to Dr. Seligson. The little girl said: "But my father already saw a doctor, and the doctor said he has to go to the hospital!" The Rebbetzin told the Rebbe what she said and the Rebbe said: "Nu, if they already asked a doctor, they should do what he said." When the girl returned home and R' Gurary heard that at first the Rebbe had said they should consult with Dr. Seligson, he decided not to do anything without Dr. Seligson's approval. When Dr. Seligson arrived he said the situation wasn't that bad and he could wait until after Yom Tov. A few hours later the stone passed and the next day R' Gurary was in his usual place, selling Hakafos on behalf of Merkoz LeInyonei Chinuch. When they told the Rebbe that the stone had passed, the Rebbe said: "Nu, I said they should listen to Seligson." R' Gurary had a special Chassidishe cleverness. In one of the early years of the Nesius the Rebbe returned from the Ohel af-ter sunset, not having davened Mincha yet. Following Yud Shvat 5753 (1993), when the Rebbe consented to the global televising of the encouragement of Yechi, there were members of Anash who tried to hamper the efforts of spreading this message. Reb Zalmen, who was a member of Agudas Chasidei Chabad and a staunch proponent of these efforts, did his utmost to stonewall those trying to impede on the Rebbe’s wishes. During this period, Reb Zalmen submitted a letter to Rebbe asking the following: “Regarding those who tirelessly fight me . . solely because I proudly pronounce the Rebbe as Moshiach, must I fight this to the point of Mesiras Nefesh?” When the letter was read to the Rebbe, the Rebbe answered affirmatively. 30 | Moshiach Weekly
  • 31. The Rebbe asked R' Gurary: "When is sunset this time of year?" R' Gurary answered: "Five minutes after the Rebbe finishes Mincha!" The Rebbe smiled and was pleased and went to daven Mincha. AN ETERNAL ZECHUS Just as the Rebbe Rayatz called him "Minister of the Courtyard," the Rebbe appointed R' Gurary as the one responsible for all his household expenses as well as anything connected with the Rebbe and Rebbetzin's medical needs. On Chaf-Beis Shevat 5748, a few hours after the Rebbetzin passed away, the Rebbe called R' Gurary to his room at home and with a serious look told him that the Zechus of being the one primarily involved with the nifteres (deceased) would stand by him and his children and grandchildren until the end of time. R' Gurary was once involved in build-ing a Sukkah for the Rebbe, and among other things, he needed to be sure that they could sit in the Sukkah without any halachic questions arising. For this purpose, he trimmed the trees at 770 that lined the way one goes to Tashlich. The Rebbe asked him how he could cut the trees and R' Gurary wrote to the Rebbe that in Shulchan Aruch it says that only fruit trees may not be cut, but barren trees may be cut. The Rebbe said that when being involved in the needs of the public, one must have Yishuv Ha'daas (presence of mind), and in this matter it says in Seifer HaChinuch that it's forbidden to cut trees because it causes pain to the residents of the city, and by cutting the branches he caused pain to those who live in the house. As someone alert to the Rebbe's needs, R' Gurary came up with the idea of building a special place for Tashlich near 770 to save the Rebbe the bother of walking to the park. After receiving the Rebbe's consent and blessing, he brought people to dig behind the building and they discovered a spring under 770. From there, the water flows into the special structure used for Tashlich. Before Rosh HaShana, the Rebbe gave him various instructions in connection with Tashlich – that there should be trees around it and fish. Every year, the family made sure to bring fish. By the way, it is from this spring that they draw water for Mayim Shelanu for Pesach. When the Rebbe wanted to point out a particular thing but didn't want to do so at a farbrengen, he would call R' Gurary to a ye-chidus and have him convey his message. An example: In the early years the Rebbe stayed in the Sukkah while people said the bracha on the Rebbe's Daled Minim. After a while, the Rebbe told R' Gurary that he didn't want to take the time, and requested of him to ar-range an alternative. R' Gurary arranged that R' Meir Harlig would take the Daled Minim from the Rebbe, thus saving the Rebbe precious time. Aside from this, dozens of Horaos and Hanhagos were transmitted through him over the years. In connection with the Bar Mitzva of his sons, and later when they mar-ried, R' Gurary received instructions and Hanhagos from the Rebbe. In later years, R' Gurary was the Shliach of Anash to give the Rebbe the Pan Kloli and to bless the Rebbe on his birthday, Yud-Alef Nissan. AN ABOUT-FACE – FOR MOSHIACH In more recent years, R' Gurary would speak a great deal about faith in what the Rebbe said. He would always quote from the Haftora of Rosh HaShana, the day of his passing, which describes the strong faith Chana had in the promise of the Navi. The following is an excerpt from an article R' Gurary wrote before Yud- Alef Nissan in one of the later years: In the story of Shiras Chana it says that Eli HaKohen who was a Navi gave her a Bracha, " ופני' לא היו עוד " (her countenance was no longer the same). Why add that final comment? What relevance does it have to the Bracha Eli gave her? Prior to these words, the Possuk writes, "and the G-d of Israel should grant your request that you asked of Him." So it's clear that his Bracha would be fulfilled as all words of a Navi are fulfilled, what is the Chidush of the words " ?"ופני' לא היו עוד The answer is simple: True, the Bra-cha of a Navi is always fulfilled, but there can be obstacles and delays. Therefore, in order for Eli's bracha to be fulfilled without obstacles and delays, there had to be a "vessel" for this, and the vessel was Emuna and Bitachon – "Her countenance was no longer the same." If instead of her former bitterness she felt joy, to the point that her physical countenance reflected her Simcha and Bitachon, this itself became the vessel for Eli's bracha to be fulfilled "below ten handbreadths," as indeed happened. Chana's prayer was special and the Gemara learns many halachos from her prayer. It wasn't merely a personal prayer but Kislev 5774 | 31
  • 32. something that pertained to future generations. From this story we learn that in order for a Bracha from a Tzaddik to be realized, we need the vessel of faith. This is the avoda of our times "and her countenance was no longer the same." Emuna. I heard a story from R' Moshe Leib Rodstein, that once a woman came to R' Mendel Horodoker to ask for a Bracha for a child. R' Mendel told her: "If you will accept my bracha in such a way that you feel your hands moving [i.e., that you feel as though you are holding the baby and rocking him], I will bless you." When she said she would, he blessed her, and his bracha was fulfilled. Her emuna wasn't way up there in the seventh heaven; it was palpable. And it was this that made her a vessel to see the fulfillment of the Bracha. In our generation we see how the Rebbe's words were always "on the mark." On many occasions the Rebbe told us that "our generation is the last generation of Galus and the first of Geula" and so we need to believe this with simple faith. When the Razah (the brother of the Rebbe Rashab) was asked to be Rebbe after the passing of the Rebbe Maharash he said: "Everything has an intermediary. Between a wealthy man and a poor man is a man of average means. Between a wise man and a fool there's someone in between, etc., but between a rebbe and a thief there's nothing in between, either you're a Rebbe or you're a thief [i.e., a thief, who is Gonev Daas – he fools people]." The same is true with the emuna in what the Rebbe said, there's no partial belief. Either you believe or ch"v... The fact that much time has elapsed and we still don't have the true and complete Geulah (and there are IN THAT WHICH THE REBBE KOCHS, WE TOO MUST KOCH An address delivered by Reb Zalmen at a Kinus in 770 on Chof Zayin Nissan 5753 The main thing we must speak about, and that which we have the duty to speak about, is how to accomplish the point that I will elaborate on later, something that is the call of the hour: This that two years ago the Rebbe gave us a mission and said he is leaving it to us. I, in particular, must speak of this for it was to me personally that the Rebbe later said ‘loy noga v’loy poga’ (it has had no effect). The Rebbe did not say this just to put someone down, but in order to encourage and prod us into action. It is therefore specifically incumbent on me to speak about this issue, particularly since two years have already passed since that day. Before that, however, I wish to speak of something that is clear to me and very near to my heart. I have already spoken of it more than once, but now, when we see the Rebbe ‘screaming,’ literally – we all see and hear his screams – we therefore must do all we can, and in accordance to Torah, we must cry out to Hashem to heal the Rebbe, as it is written ויזעקו אל ה' (and they cried out to Hashem) followed by ישלח דברו וירפאם (He sent His word and healed them). Now let me move on to my second and central point, a topic that must be discussed. This that I am going to speak about can be approached from various angles. I, however, wish to discuss only its practical dimensions. I would like to relate something I heard while in Tel Aviv, something that had a very strong impact on me. Whether it had an impact on the others there, I do not know, but me it affected tremendously. I would like to retell it here so that hopefully it will impact someone here too. The Chossid Reb Shaul Ber Zislin, whom I remember from back in Kremenchug as an extremely holy man, related that in the early years of the Rebbe Rashab’s nesius he was sitting between a group of elder Chassidim who were arguing over which Chassidus should be learned. One said Imrei Bina, another said the Maamarim of the Tzemach Tzedek and yet another said the Maamorim of the Rebbe Maharash (many of those present were Chassidim of the Maharash). On the side was standing Reb Osher Nikolei’ever, the Shochet of Nikolayev, who was not counted amongst the Chassidic greats, but he was a wholehearted Mekushar to the Rebbe. He was only a young man, yet he interjected into the discussion saying that he doesn’t understand why they are even arguing. “We all know,” he said, “that whatever the Rebbe kochs in, we must Koch in as well ( .(אין וואס דער רבי קאכט זיך אין דעם דארף מיר קאכן The Rebbe says Maamorim every Shabbos, so this is the Rebbe’s koch and it must be ours too. How can you even argue about this topic?” Now too we can argue over what to do and bring up many different solutions, but I would like to speak practical. We see what the Rebbe does and we know in what he kochs. The Rebbe goes out twice a day and with his last strengths encourages the singing of Yechi. So what relevance do all the opinions have? What the Rebbe does, so must we do, especially when it is done with his last strengths. And now we’re going to argue about it? This is utter nonsense! We see clearly what the Rebbe does! The Rambam writes that we believe in Matan Torah because we ourselves saw it. Same here, we see how the Rebbe comes out twice a day and shows us what to do, and you’re going to debate over whether to believe or not believe? Utter nonsense! We can argue over different methods to go about it, but we must always bear in mind that what the Rebbe does, is what we do. Those who say that such actions can have adverse effects are totally missing the point! Do they not realize that the Rebbe knows that people see what is going on and it is being publicized all over the world? Does he not know that it can do “damage”? Yet we see that he still does it… When it comes to health, parnasa, business – whether to invest or not to invest – you rely on the Rebbe, but when it comes to something the Rebbe does twice daily, suddenly you start having doubts? After all we bore witness to, do you still have any questions? It could be that logically you have a point, but the Rebbe shows us twice a day otherwise. Imagine if you were to ask the Rebbe whether to do something or not, something which you fear can do damage, and the Rebbe would answer to go ahead with it. Would you even think of doing otherwise? What can be greater than the fact that the Rebbe comes out twice a day, with his last strengths, and encourages the singing of Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu Virabeinu Melech Hamoshiach Leolam Voed? After all that we are going to get into ‘logical’ debates? This is how it was all the years, and the same is with Moshiach: what the Rebbe says, we do, even to the point of Mesiras Nefesh, just as the Rebbe is currently doing with Mesiras Nefesh. May Hashem help that we should do to this effect, for it is certain that the Rebbe knows of all the “problems” and “damage” and bobeh mayses. Let us be like the Chossid who said “Whatever the Rebbe kochs in, we must Koch in as well”! 32 | Moshiach Weekly
