Pythagoras' Theorem
Over 2000 years ago Pythagoras discovered an amazing
fact about triangle(1):
When the triangle has a right angle (90°) ...
... and squares(2) are made on each of the
three sides, then ...
... the biggest square has the exact same area as the
other two squares put together!
It is called "Pythagoras' Theorem(3) " and can be written in one short equation(4).
a2
+ b2
= c2
Definition
The longest side of the triangle is called the "hypotenuse"(5), so the formal definition(6) is:
In a right triangle(7):
the square of the hypotenuse is equal to
the sum(8) of the squares of the other two sides.
Why is this useful?
If we know the lengths(9) of two sides of a right angled triangle, we can find the length of
the third side. (But remember it only works on right angled triangles!)
How do you use it? Write it down as an equation:
Content words
6. (1) triangle (n.) a flat shape with three straight sides
(3) theorem (n.) a formal statement that can be shown to be true by logic
(6) definition (n.) a statement that explains the meaning of a word or phrase
(9) length (n.) the measurement of something from end to end
Key terms
(2) square (n.) the result of multiplying a number by itself
(4) equation (n.) a mathematical statement using mathematical symbols
(5) hypotenuse (n.) the longest side of right triangle that has one angle of 90°
(7) right triangle (n.) a triangle that has one angle of 90°
(8) sum (v.) to multiply a number by itself
Example1:
202
+ 212
= c2
52
+ 122
= c2
1
25 + 144 = c2
2
169 = c2
3
c2
= 169 4
c = √169 5
c = 13
7. Example2:
a2
+ b2
= c2
92
+ b2
= 152
1
81 + b2
= 225 2
Take 81 from both sides: 3
b2
= 144 4
b = √144 5
b = 12
Task 1
True or False
Direction: Write "T" if the statement is true or "F" if the statement is false. Then
rewrite to correct the information if the statement is false.
