provide services such as “fitness, sport, age-related programs,
events, arts, leadership, etc.” that are deemed a “public good”
(Lunn, 2020, p. 3).

-This is a recreation example because, “…the municipal level of
government is the level in which the recreation needs of the
general public are directly addressed through the offering of
recreation services” (Lunn 2020, p. 4). This recreation centre
provides individuals the opportunity to participate in many
leisure activities. This Sport and Leisure complex has a pool,
many ice rinks, and a gym with a weight room.
4. Enver Creek
Secondary
School

• Enver Creek Secondary is a public high school in Surrey making it part of the public sector. There are no
fees for education, however some extracurricular activities do require some fees.

• -At Enver Creek everyone is required to take a physical education class each year. These classes help
develop basic skills such ass running, throwing, catching, and kicking. Physical education is “essential to a
person’s physical and social well-being and to overall quality of life” (Lunn 2020, p.5). Physical Education
classes help pave a pathway to a healthy lifestyle for every student's future.
5. Fraser Heights Recreation Centre

• The Fraser Heights Rec Centre is part of the public sector
because “the municipal level of government is the level in
which the recreation needs of the general public are
directly addressed through the offering of recreation
services” (Lunn 2020, p.5).

• - Fraser Heights recreation centre is an example of a public
sector which provides recreational activites for the
community. These activities include multiple gyms for
basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Also includes a
weight room for people who wish to lift some weights.
These recreation services “play a significant role in the
creation of cohesive and quality communities” (Lunn 2020,
p.5).
7. Platinum Athletic Club

• Platinum Athletic Club is part of the commercial
sector because the business is profit oriented
meaning that the service is provided at a cost of bi-
weekly or monthly payments.
• SPSC 2210 Connection
• -Platinum Athletic is an example of commercial
recreation which provides innovative leisure,
recreation goods, and supplies and services to help
consumers with fitness needs. There are many
machines which allow for members to work on their
fitness and health. Membership allows for access to
the gym and all facilities and provides the gym with
profit. The gym also provides personal trainers but
that is at an additional cost. These trainers are an
example of coaches which help with movements and
form during exercises.
8. Oxygen Yoga & Fitness

• Oxygen Yoga is part of the commercial sector
because the consumer pays for classes in
order to stay fit.
• SPSC 2210 Connection
-This is an indoor commercial recreation example
because Oxygen Yoga provides high level training
in their classes by generating revenue from the
fees they charge. They charge a fee for each
drop-in class or you can sign up for membership
on a yearly contract.
9. Surrey 152St Physiotherapy & Sports Injury
Clinic

• This is considered part of the commercial sector
because they provide rehab and physiotherapy for
sports injuries or other injuries at a certain cost.
• SPSC 2210 Connection
• - This is also an indoor commercial recreation
example because people who require rehabilitation
from injuries can come here and get “High level
training, specialized service; expected high quality”
(Lunn 2020, p.6). This all comes at a certain price
which helps the clinic generate revenue and profit.

• Voluntary non-profit organization which is “operated
primarily by volunteers.” (Lunn 2020, p.8). They are trying
to better the future for our youth one game at a time.
Their primary goal is to work towards keeping kids away
from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence.
• SPSC 2210 Connection
• -This is a great example of coaching the youth by
teaching them how to be leaders as well as how to use
sports as an outlet. They rely on the help of volunteers to
teach the youth these skills and to organize these events
so that the kids can play.
12. Surrey Football Club

Surrey Football Club is a non-profit sports organization which relies “user
fees & fundraising; corporate sponsorship”(Lunn 2020, p.9).
Connection to SPSC 2210
-Surrey FC provides a great example of coaching as well as recreation
and leisure. All the coaches in the organization are required to have the
Sport Activity Leader program certification, which ensures that the
members in the organization are professionals. The athletes play to have
fun and to enjoy the game because that’s what sports are all about.
13. Jumpstart
• Jumpstart is a non-profit organization which works with the
school district in Surrey. Instructors and students volunteer here to
help with sport & recreational programs.
• SPSC 2210 Connection
• Programs and initiatives at Jumpstart help kids overcome
financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation to
provide inclusive play for kids of all abilities. Is a good example
of “how future leisure and recreation needs of Canadians will
increasingly be addressed” (Lunn 2020, p.10).
