1. Adventure #4 - Service Sectors in
Your Community
By Matthew Matej Grgic
2. Intro
In this presentation we will be taking a look at nine different service sectors,
including three from each sector. That is, using SPSC 2210 course material, this
presentation will help identify what makes each of these nine sectors public,
private/commercial, or Non-profit.
3. Sungod - Public Service Sector
Sungod is a recreation centre located in delta,
British Columbia, and is a great place for a large
variety of different publicly accessible activities.
These activities include but are not limited to
swimming, skating, and weight rooms/fitness
activities. Sungod is easily recognizable as a
good for society that benefits the physical and
mental health benefits of many different
individuals, while not being motivated by the
profit they may make.
4. Sungod - Municipal
It is also quite obviously a public
sector because it is focused on the
general public and consists of at
least one of the three levels of
government (Municipal). This as
stated earlier does mean that
Sungod is governed/operated in the
public good rather than motivated
by profit. This of course also means
that its “...mandates vary from
encouraging the development of
recreation programs and facilities”
to “being a catalyst for recreation
development” within the delta
community (Lunn, 2013).
5. Sungod -
Coaching,
Education,
Recreation
The great thing about Sungod is that it relates to
coaching, education, and recreation in a host of
different ways. Sungod is a great place to
experience and witness coaching. The gym
courts are regularly used to coach different
sports ranging from badminton and basketball
all the way to karate.
6. Sungod -
Coaching,
Education,
Recreation
The education part is also a huge factor at
Sungod. This public recreation centre does an
incredible job of educating the youth at the
weight room on how how to use all the different
strength training machines. (A lesson and test is
also a requirement before being allowed to
workout for the first time!)
And it is of course in the name but Sungod
recreation centre offers loads of different
recreational and non competitive activities that
are free to very cheap to drop in and participate in,
such as swimming, various gymnasium activities,
and fitness/weightlifting rooms all throughout the
week.
7. Delta Rec Centre - Public Service Sector
Delta rec centre is very similar to Sungod in a variety
of ways. Other than the Delta-based Recreation
centre being a slightly newer and very unique
recreation centre in design, it offers activities for all
age groups ranging from skating, and outdoor
swimming, to the gym and fitness centre that offers
drop-in throughout most days of the week.
8. Delta Rec Centre - Public Service Sector
Delta recreation centre is a great example of a
public service sector because not only does it
do a great job of providing opportunities for
recreation to disadvantaged clients, and the
general public, but in general it “provides those
opportunities deemed valuable to society”
(Lunn, 2013).
9. Delta Rec Center -
Coaching, Education,
Recreation
Delta recreation center located in
North Delta British Columbia is also
a place where lots of education and
coaching goes on. They offer
outdoor swimming lessons where
different levels and age groups are
taught how to swim, and skating
lessons on the ice rink! The rec
centre also educates first time
fitness/gym participants on how to
use all the equipment and
machines. This is to ensure that no
injuries occur, while giving them the
best chance to have an effective
and successful workout!
10. Watermania - Public Service Sector
Watermania is mainly known for being a public
wave pool and Aquatic centre in Richmond British
Columbia, but in many ways it is much more than
just that. One of Watermania's main objectives is to
“promote health and well being through recreation”
(Lunn, 2013). Watermania believes that by targeting
the general public as any good public sector does,
with the different activities offered at an affordable
admission price, will help “act as a catalyst for
recreation development in the community” (Lunn,
2013).
11. Watermania -
Motivation?
In essence this service is motivated
by providing what they view as
necessary services that can help
better the mental and physical
well-being of the greater community,
without asking for ridiculous
admission fees, and complicated
membership programs. In all three
public sector examples, the tax-based
funding allows for the subsidized fee
structures, which a lot of the
participants appreciate greatly about
this public service sector (Lunn, 2013).
12. Watermania -
Coaching,
Education,
Recreation
Watermania offers all the levels of swimming
lessons at an affordable price to the general
public. They also offer coaching and education
for physical exercise training in the weight
rooms, if needed/desired.
13. Steve Nash Fitness - Private Sector
Steve Nash fitness centre is a privately run fitness
centre, located in a few different areas in the lower
mainland. However, the specific one that I have the
best experience and more so familiarity with is
located in Delta British Columbia, on Scott road,
which sadly shut down recently, presumably due to
the pandemic.
14. Steve Nash Fitness
- Private Sector
Do’s!
Admission at this private service
sector is in the form of a membership
that they claim is low cost. This
organization does a few things that
private service sectors (do) well. For
firsts it is evident that the nature of
this service is provided for a cost, or in
other words profit oriented at the end
of the day (Lunn, 2013). However to
justify this goal it does offer higher
quality training, fitness specialized
services that take place in an ideal
strength training environment , and
equipment that many public or
non-profit facilities simply lack.
15. Steve Nash -
Coaching,
Education,
Recreation
The great thing is that Steve Nash Fitness is still a
place that increases recreation opportunities for
residents even though it does come at a higher cost
than a place like Sungod or Delta.
Steve Nash of course has high quality education
and coaching for the gym, and those that are
looking for personal training, getting someone to
guide them through workouts, or organized group
sessions, will likely find it here!
16. Ronce Hair Salon - Private Service Sector
In my unbiased opinion, Ronce hair salon is a
great private business. The salon offers a variety
of different haircuts, and beard stylings as well.
They are definitely in it for the profit and
business aspect as they have been continually
increasing the cost of haircuts since I started
going there. A haircut used to be ten dollars and
now it is nearly twenty, and that is just for what
they call a basic cut. Unfortunately, although
they have changed their business plan and
costs, they continue to take cash only.
17. Ronce Hair Salon -
Coaching,
Education,Recreation
A possible aspect of SPSC 2210
seen at the salon is coaching and
education where the top barbers
will educate and teach new
employees. In a sense coaching
them through the proper way that
they as a company believe hair
should be cut. This business does
not target all groups or genders as
it deals with men and not women.
18. Ronce Hair Salon
- Private Sector
Do’s!
Ronce does do a great job of increasing
employment opportunities by being very open to
new barbers coming in, which is why it is often a
different set of barbers each week.
Ronce hair salon is still alive and going strong
today as a commercial sector because it provides
a quality service that they know most people
require at some point (Lunn, 2013.). It also
remains competitive and affordable, while being
aware of new trends both with respect to haircut
styles, and trendy music played at the salon
(Lunn, 2013).
19. Groundwork Athletics South Surrey - Private
Sector
Groundwork Athletics is a private service sector
located in Surrey British Columbia. It is
important to note that although this is a place
that hopes to provide services that can
physically and mentally improve an individuals
health and well-being, it is also aware of the
profit margins required to keep the place
running.
20. Groundwork Athletics
South Surrey -
Coaching, Education,
Recreation
It offers quality coaching in the form of personal
training, and education in nutrition. The area is
also able to be rented out for individual or group
workouts.
21. Lack of Equivalent
Outside Support
Groundwork Athletics South
Surrey does not have the same
direct or indirect support from
the government that a non profit
or public sector may have (Lunn,
n.d.), so it has to at the end of the
day be profit oriented to ensure it
can continue to run, without the
owner getting into any financial
issues.
22. Baobab Inclusive Empowerment Society -
Non-Profit Service Sector
Baobab Inclusive Empowerment society is the
only bilingual organization in Surrey British
Columbia, serving those who are most
vulnerable and suffer from disabilities. As a non
profit they “strive to empower vulnerable
families, and individuals with multiple barriers”
(Baobab, 2021).
23. Programs - Coaching,
Education, Recreation
They do this through things like
advocacy, education, innovation
and support for humanity, with
support from volunteers. They
also do not ask for any fees
when it comes to their many
culturally sensitive programs. All
programs are free as the main
goal is to help without the
interest for profit and personal
gain.
24. The Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and
Families - Non Profit Service Sector
The Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth
and Families located in New Westminster BC is
a non profit organization that offers a
“continuum of services” that help families and
youth dealing with issues related to societal
distress, and alienation. It is a client centered
and free approach that has the people in need of
help in mind over any financial gain there is to be
had.
25. Education Programs -
Coaching, Education,
Recreation
They are of course focusing in on a
specific group of people mentioned
above so it is not intended for the
general public at any time. The main
goal is to educate these groups on
how to strengthen family functioning
and the value of increasing personal
responsibility while “[relying] on the
efforts of members and volunteers for
sustained survival” (Lunn, 2013).
26. Fleetwood Community Centre - Non-Profit Service
Sector
Fleetwood community center is interesting in
that at first it may look just like any other public
rec center, however, there is more with the
Surrey BC located rcommunity centre than
meets the immediate eye. This place is
funded/supported for by different
entities/groups, the government, and donations,
such as the $100,000 cheque they received in
2015.
27. Fleetwood Community Centre - Non-Profit Service
Sector
They do require a recreation pass card which is
free of charge as the main priority is to better
the lives of those in the community who lack the
funds and support needed to afford a lot of
different physical and mental health benefiting
activities. This community rec centre also
“[relies] on the efforts of members and
volunteers for sustained survival” (Lunn, 2013.)
28. Coaching, Education,
Recreation
To Fleetwood community centre it is
important that individuals have a place
where they can learn new sports and
activities through different coaching
lessons offered, in the form of
different school programs, and fitness
studios! Since they are non profit, in
order to pull this off they may at times
“seek public sector assistance”, need
to “know their membership” and “rely
on their members” for both support
and justification of the recreation
centres use/purpose (Lunn, 2013).
