WHAT TYPE OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
The Publisher
 The media publisher I chose is H Bauer Media (Bauer) which publishes
magazines in the UK and globally, I originally looked at Spin Media,
however they publish other rap magazines. Bauer has a gap in their
market as they only publish Q, Kerrang, and MOJO. By publishing a hip
hop magazine they can expand their audience.
What do they offer?
 Bauer has a website called greatmagazines.co.uk which allows people to
buy their magazines, this shows how they provide online distribution.
They also have over 50 radio and TV stations that reach millions globally.
They also have printing and postal services, this means their range of
distribution is wide and by having my magazine published by them, I can
reach a larger audience.
Bauer’s Reputation
 Bauer has always had a major presence in the UK magazine market with
a considerable market share. At the beginning of 2008, Bauer expanded
its portfolio further by acquiring Emap’s Radio and Consumer Magazine
divisions and changed the name of these new UK businesses to Bauer
Media. Bauer is known for innovation which would help my magazine gain
a larger audience as Bauer would have a variety of distribution methods
and there would also be less competition because they don’t publish
other rap magazines.
What other media products do they
distribute?
 they publish a wide range of magazines including Women’s, car, movie,
music, sport, fitness magazines and much more. The music magazines
they publish are MOJO, Q and Kerrang. This gap in their market means
less competition for my magazine with other rap magazines so my
magazine can reach a wide audience without any strong competition to
limit how many people choose it.
Methods of distribution
I will also analyse how my
magazine will be distributed, the
main methods would be…
Social media
 (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) is a form of online distribution and it
means more people will access my magazine’s content as millions of
people prefer online content and a lot of my core audience uses it but
younger people mainly use social media which means people outside my
intended age group can access my magazine. I chose those three
websites because they have millions of users and reach people globally.
Online Website
 I will have a website which will keep reader up to date on the magazine
and advertises all the features of my magazine. It allows readers to buy
magazines or get a subscription and this method of distribution will
increase the readership of my audience because it is online and can
reach other places than the UK.
Physical Media
 I will also produce a hard copy of the magazine, using the sale and return
method of distribution. This method allows for less income to be loss on
magazines that aren’t sold as they are returned and sold again. However
this could be expensive for the publisher. However since Bauer has a gap
in their market and there is less competition for rap magazines so there
would be less products that go unsold. Also if the hardcopies don’t sell
widely I have used online methods of distribution which are more likely
to sell because most people buy online.
